- Can you save France in 1940 on HOI4 with just an air force?! That's what I'll be trying today in Hearts of Iron 4. As the UK I'll try and save France WITHOUT sending any UK troops to mainland Europe as Germany attempts to conquer France in 1940. Can I do it?

*WHERE'S THE BLOODY AIR FORCE*
Somewhere on the ground maybe.
Now add ships and lock down the med and german coast completely :)
Do this with a better AI behavior mod
Your designs discust me

"I think it will be fun" Oh, Alex...poor Alex
HOI4 is never fun. It's addictive
we need more a-z
@@blaserbane9284stakuyi is doing a-z in Kaiser redux
i know the feeling of this,It fucking sucks trying to get the French to hold the line

"Where's the bloody navy?"
May 12th "Where's the bloody France?"
The entire fleet of royal Air forcemen: in the sky.
He might've had a better chance at the challenge if he had played as France because the AI really let him down
But then he would have needed a army
@@dutchmapping09Too be fair you only need a force to hold Germany, Italy and maybe Spain.
@@rhyscallinan5058 u got 3 fronts at the least with North Africa,Germany and Italy more if u add in Japan and Spain
“Thank god for the French Air Force” - Winston Churchill 1939 probably
Historical AI France avoids getting rid of disjointed government like the plague, presumably so if you have a newer player on Italy/Germany they have more than a few months to capitulate them with it. I'd probably focus more on light CAS and fighters for logistics bombing, if you could destroy enough trucks and trains to make Germany have bad supply the AI would probably stop pushing and you could start putting together strat bombers to go after their factories.
EDIT: I decided to try this for myself, and it worked pretty swimmingly. My basic strategy was to quickly use wing training to put together 1936 fighters that compared to the starting BF109, had lightly more attack than their defense and slightly more defense than their attack. Specifically 1936 light, 2x4 light guns, 1 engine 2, non-strat materials and sealing fuel tanks (plenty of rubber from malaysia for cheap). My cas was the same bottom row with bomb bays for weapons. With all my mils and early mil building in 1937 or so I had 4000 fighters by the time the war started, more than 2 times as many as Germany, along with 2-3 factories on CAS and 2-3 factories on the Bristol Tacs you start with.
Guaranteeing Poland is huge, with the extra time before they attack the Benelux I took out a lot of Germany's planes in Poland and was able to start logistics bombing them on the other side of the Maginot line. Since Logi bombing doesn't depending on fighting and their whole air force was tied up in Poland I was freely decimating their supply of trucks and trains. They did eventually declare and take Netherlands and Belgium but once they did I was strat bombing their railways and supply hubs with the Tacs, since Brussels was their only supply hub the constant supply issues from it being bombed stalled out their advance into France surprisingly quickly, they took Lille and Calais but not the Calais airport before their troops were on permanent red supply.
Investing in a spy agency also helped, I had a full intel network and decrypted German ciphers before they attacked Poland, so the first month of their war where their air force was strongest they were fighting against an active broken cipher.
It's now 1943, the US joined the Allies and France still hasn't gotten rid of disjointed government.
I've tried this so many times, managing to get France to 1942 but even after 2 and a half years, France never increased their conscription laws so they still just died.
Alex did the classic AI challenge today.
Alex: "Why the hell does France have disjointed government?!"
Also Alex: *Puts it on historical AI, which basically always makes French have the disjointed government*
A co vid? Is that like a collaboration video? That's awesome, can't wait to see you release the co vid
Sick!
I did try this myself a while ago; had 2k CAS and fighters up when Germany went around the Maginot... France still somehow fell even with 48 of my divisions holding the Belgian front :/
it's easier if you just sit of the river as you get more buffs and have more time for entrenchment
@@royalcinnamon I literally did that. Germany still pushed me off the river line. my divs weren't amazing due to focusing my industry of aircraft but still.
@@QuantumShock1 well i had a UK/Imperial Federation run my units were 9/1's with AA, support artillery and engineers. But i invested more into Fighters than CAS, i had like 1.5-2k high quality fighters (expensive since they had 4 canons instead of machine guns) but i had very few CAS around 200-600 when the war started, but i had around 56-72 divisions in France
You could have had better chances if you followed the fighter meta a bit more.
What’s the current fighter meta?
@@mrr9636 Heavy MGs (low IC cost, use when you have a big industry or full mil production on planes), Cannons for better trade ratio (more expensive better on the defense ie. Germany 1944-45).
I'm pretty sure British 1939-41 historical fighter meta is Heavy MGs because the German ai doesn't produce enough planes early. for CAS you should go AT cannon 2 and double bomb locks. if you have air superiority your CAS agility doesn't matter, but air defense for enemy AA. '42 onward you should have the IC for mixed planes (cannons and MGs) and if you are a super major (USA, GER, USSR) cannon planes in '42 onward. (This is assuming by 1939-40 you have fighter 2 airframes and '42 you have fighter 3 airframes. You should have those airframes if you research ahead of time....which you should cause planes are really strong.)
TL:DR first sentence.
@@getem3345 Thanks for the detailed explanation!
If you'll permit some commentary on this challenge:
- France at the outbreak of war will have maybe 2 doctrine buffs, whilst Germany will be pushing 2/3rd of the way through their doctrine tree. This means that French divisions, even if they could gain parity with the German divisions in number, will naturally fold.
- German tanks are pretty good by 1940, whilst the French divisions will often not even have AT.
- Supply hubs are so dense and frequent in Western Europe that Logi Strikes are not particularly effective.
- You probably want a minimum of Self-Sealing Fuel Tanks and Drop Tanks on your fighters.
Tactical Bombers are mostly a waste of production. They are poor for Strat Bombing and you could make perhaps 2 CAS planes for the price of one Tac.
- France is kinda crap to play. I've never successfully held as France, so the AI will never fare all that well.
Wonderful to see you back now though Mr. The Rambler!
I could show you how to hold france
I just hold as France by pushing into Belgium and the Netherlands and holding the strong points, sometimes have to recapture them after being de-org'd because river battles fking suck (when capture/recapture bridge tactics happen, I'm left with just two divisions able to participate in the battle, and even if my troops are strong, the German CAS will concentrate on those divisions and win the whole battle. If only those moronic combat width reduction effects for rivers didn't exist), so have some strong divisions for recapturing the river line. Eventually the Germans will bleed themselves dry and you can counter-attack.
I did it a few patches behind. It went farely well, but I had to gather all the Commonwealth's troops to hold the line in northern France.
There’s an old joke from the Cold War, two Soviet generals are walking on the Champs-Élysées. One turns to the other and asks ‘So, who won the Air War?’
Alex, please do this:as UK in 1936 start, declare war on belgium, netherlands and luxemburg, invade them and after that repel the german attack on the area
This might work in III. In HoI IV bombing airfields is a lot harder. I used to play as Germany and invade France from Normandy with four divisions and win. By suppressing their and British airfields, distracting the Royal Navy and zipping in with light infantry and horses.
Glad to see you back Alex
It’s gonna be a classic rambler win of course
You’re a top lad *tips hat* right good chap this one!
France has, to this day, not removed the disjointed government trait
Alex if you haven't recorded S (in the Z-A) series, it would be cool to see you try anarchist Spain. I don't think you've done an anarchist run on the channel yet 😊
glad you are feeling better!!:)
I’m glad you’re not dead Alex!
very nice editing this time around!
Britain when there’s a world war: random colonies go!!!!
imma do this my next game, thanks alex!
Welcome back!! Feel better!
glad you feel somewhat better. looking forward to you getting back to yourself.
Honestly I don’t know if that’s possible. The AI won’t pick up on the fact that you are handling the air/navy and focus of army as a result.
Welcome back, Alex!
If he played Road to 56' he could've gotten Egypt to assist him.
Being fair to AI France, IRL France hasn't got rid of its Disjointed Government spirit yet either.
I also Covid back in March, it was awful. Never been so tired in my life, that was my classic Rambler Fail.
When I make fighters I usually just go for the 1940 fighter, equip it with a level 3 engine, 12 heavy machine guns, a self sealing fuel tank, and 2 armor plates, it hasn't let me down yet
Rambler moment: do battlefield support doctrine when you plan on sending 0 divisions
I mean the French focus tree is insanely bad. They've got pretty much no way of being ready by 1939. Then add on the Ai and it's done for them 😊
Classic Rambler fail. The French ai is suicidal.
i though he was gonna sing "Come with me, and we'll see, if planes will save your stupid nation" so it sound like in a world of your imagination

Hey, Rambler. I'm glad you're still around.
Idea: is it possible to save china with just a navy
Oh dear, the Forgot About Poland meme is back and it's 2023.
I think a challenge you would enjoy is Sweden in the empire mod on the second start date
“Where’s the bloody airforce! This is driving me silly!”
I miss the fun music rambler had in his challenge vids years ago
This works a bit better when you only build fighters and then shoot down all the german planes. You also need to build up Radar's.
I had a weird game where i went elite difficultly with the UK and saved france, but noticed that GER ai hasn't made any tanks.
Thankes
Hi Matt
it's pain? well, for the french pain is their bread and butter
This is when airforce production is a bit too excessive.
Maybe re-do it building anti-air and forts in France, make the Maginot a Great Wall of Dakka? Doesn't the AI have a boner for forts? Maybe build them in a wave formation so multiple forts have frontage against a single un-defended tile, give the French artificial salients to use.
Also is it possible/feasible to rush out a carrier to extend the reach of the air force and screw with Axis shipping? You don't need an Ark Royale, just an Admiral Kuznetzov [IE a barge with a runway and hangars] should suffice for the German coast. Historically the UK had a couple interwar converted carriers before the invasion of France. Assuming the production matches history, you might be able to push out Ark Royale herself by her canon commission date of Dec 16 1938. Argus, Hermes Eagle and the 3 Illustrious class should also exist. Group them into a death star fleet with escorts and either dock up the other capital ships [to save fuel] or have them raid the Med to screw with Italy and defend the southern flank.
I think saving France is hopeless, that's hard enough as UK even sending troops. You can win WWII over all though with just airplanes, I've done it with minor commonwealth nations.
Working with French AI… fun?! You poor man :( I think only way this could work is with a buddy in France and bombing supply and trains behind German lines maybe?
Damn that Willy Wonka song parady
the answer: NO!
Now the be competent at HOI4 challenge next

Didn’t you do a similar video (without the no army restriction though) a while back? I think titled CAS is King or something?
Found it 😅

off course
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh Canada!
Now do this for Japan as well 😂
Would you ever do a run on the vandal kingdom hoi4 mod?
The Rambler has conquered Covid and is now back to conquering the Nazis! Thank this man for entertaining you!!!!!!
Would night missions have been an option?
They should have called it iron mode instead of iron man mode
I mean there's a reason France's ai is made so bad
Try to play as France but only use your starting army and planes
Covid is a *very* positive way to return to the channel so I don’t know why your complaining
A for effort!
Day 1 of asking for Alex to play Mexico and put Trotsky in power
Alex, you are one of my favourite hoi4 content creator. but holy shit those plane designs are awful
Have you every did a tank only France you need to keep disjointed government until Germany is defeated no inf or air
i buyed it yesterday how to attack someone
How does this video have 759K likes but only 51K views
Spacemarines are very strong to hold against Germany as France or UK. You just need one full army of that (2 is better) and Germany will never break your lines
covid gives you god like powers?
And people once told me France is the most successful military power in history
Well in most cases they either drive the enemy from their lands or end up taking a bunch of territory and then losing it. Most of their wars though are of them being invaded but never truly conquered. Besides Nazi Germany actually succeeding the next closest was the English during the hundred year war. The English had France on the ropes but France somehow pulled a W out of it lol.
They were, right up until Waterloo. After that it was a decline into the white flag pastry-loving surrender monkeys we know and tolerate today.
As for advice build better aircraft and MORE CAS!!!
yeah, the answer is no
U
Brø 😂
that voice 💀
Bro u need less planes that are better. Cas with 2x engine 3, one anti tank gun, two small bomb locks, radio 2, and fuel pods make them do incredible damage
Play mexico

When did you think Disjointed Government goes away? March 1940 is so early that in most games Germany wouldn't be able to cap them in time...
your fighters were horrible. u cant outscale germany in no way. even if u put your mils in plane production only. plus the AI puts a huge focus on planes as well. u have to go on quality so one plane of 1 = 5 enemy planes
Alex your plane design isn't goed😅
Nuh uh
