Where Did WILLIAM RAGSDALE Go? The Mysterious Disappearance of 'HERMAN'S HEAD'.

- William Ragsdale starred in the Fox Television produced, 'Herman's Head', in the early 1990s. In this video, I take a look back at that television show and discuss what made it great, it's legacy, and also take a look at what William Ragsdale did after that show was cancelled. Thanks for watching! #williamragsdale #hermanshead #classictvshows
I met William Ragsdale at a convention. I told him that I had been a big fan of Herman's Head and watched it every week. He developed a huge grin and said "Wow, I didn't think anyone remembered that show. No one has mentioned it to me in a long time".
That’s cool! Thanks for sharing!
I loved Herman’s Head. I remember watching Inside Out thinking they completely stole this premise and didn’t do it nearly as well.
That's what I thought when I first heard Inside Out was coming out. It's a pure ripoff, complete to the personality of the alters. Someone should have sued.
👍
@@kali3665 i just looked it up. They did get sued, but not by the Herman’s Head creator. It was some other woman who created something called Moodsters. This kind of makes me think they had to have paid off the Herman’s Head people because I was able to watch Inside Out and predict what would happen. It was that similar.
@@Oonagh72 Makes sense. It was so close, they couldn't have ignored it. Thanks for confirming.
@@Oonagh72 Maybe that means we'll finally get this series on DVD. The UA-cam videos suck.
Loved this Show! & 'Fright Night' is still one of my favorite Horror Flic!
👍
I loved this show. I started watching it because as a family, one of our favorite movies was Fright Night which we still quote to this day. The show quickly became part of my tv watching lineup. It was funny and quirky and sometimes a little dark. Loved it.
I love Fright Night!
I absolutely loved this show!!!! Fox had so many good ones in the early days. Down the Shore was another one. I believe you or your brother already did a video on it.
Yeah, Dave did that video. Fox did have a ton of great shows!
I remember Jane Sibbit's character "Heddy" was a huge narcissist and in one episode, Herman had enough of her.
"Be thankful you have those legs Heddy! Because that's all you have!"
Hilarious!
@@stephensundstrom6379I remember that character. She was a horrid person.
Oh yeah. Heddy was a total see you next Tuesday.
@@James_St._James If the series had been renewed for another season, they were going to introduce head characters for Heddy, so we would see WHY she was such a ... well, you know....
Maybe it was just as well that the series was cancelled.
I remember this show. I really liked it. It came on the first year after I graduated college and I identified with the setup. Young people in an office environment. I really would like to see it again.
Me as well! I can’t find it n any streaming services!
I just found all 3 seasons free to watch here on UA-cam. The picture quality could be better but it is watchable.
I had forgotten about this show and I don't think I ever really watched it, but this video about it is very interesting. Thanks!
👍
Thanks for this, Dave! 😘💕
Thanks for all your great work over the years!
I never watched Inside Out but my wife and I enjoyed Fox's programming in their early days. Herman's Head was one of the shows we really enjoyed watching.
👍
One of the few early Fox shows I watched!
👍
I remember it well. Liked it!
👍
I loved this show even though I was a kid and barely understood it
👍
Great show. Thought you'd say more about it.
👍
I remember it really well it was a pretty good show
👍
It was a great show, a very underrated sitcom, and ahead of its time.
👍
I really liked Herman's Head, but apparently, I was alone.
Once, during a college Psychology class, our teacher was talking about all those little 'voices' and impulses in our head. I brought up Herman's Head and how it was a perfect example of that, but of course nobody had heard of it.
👍
I vaguely remember this show. The only joke I remember from it was Yeardley Smith's character yelling at a co-worker, "I do not sound like Lisa Simpson!"
👍
That's funny, because the only thing I remember about the show is the time Lisa Simpson explained a seemingly unprompted laugh as "I was just remembering a joke I saw on Herman's Head."
That is funny!
I saw parts of HH a couple times but didn't care much for it. I figured his lust won out most of the time. It was interesting that a woman played his sensitivity. I saw Mr. Ragsdale again in the 2000s on an episode of COLD CASE, where he played a 1967 murderer, and classic tv actor Monte Markham played his older self who had to pay for his earlier crime.
👍
I remember Yeardley Smith (and the late, great Jason Bernard) being a part of the cast of Herman’s Head, but totally forgot about Hank Azaria.
He’s such a great talent!
I loved this show! There were a lot of great TV shows debuting on Fox that I liked such as In Living Color and I think a show called Duet which I barely recall. I also loved the Tracy Ullman show.
I recall Herman's Head for one particular episode where Herman is dating an attractive woman who doesn't shave under her arms and his work buddy finds this hard to believe. The friend eventually meets Herman's gf and after discovering she doesn't shave, he quips to Herman, "Yikes! It looks like she has the cast of 'Fiddler on the Roof' in a headlock.
That line was so unexpected and so funny I almost passed out from laughing so hard.
I just now discovered all 3 seasons are free to watch here on UA-cam, so I'll try to find that episode and regale in the nostalgia of the 90s!
👍
I loved the show! I wish that I could find the old episodes. It was just ahead of its time.
It was absolutely ahead of its time!
A Herman’s Head of its time.
@@pauljackson2473 😂
👍
I would love Herman's Head to come back. It's now been 30 years since it was abruptly cancelled, & it's a shame this show was NEVER brought up in terms of the nostalgia wave that's been going on in recent years. I do love the fact that it has ties to The Simpsons since Yeardley Smith (voice of Lisa Simpson) & Hank Azaria (voice of Chief Wiggum, Apu & Moe Szyslak, among others) were part of the main ensemble. If they don't bring it back they should release it on DVD or at least stream it on Hulu so that older viewers could relive those funny & hilarious moments. This show walked so Disney's Inside Out could run. That's all I have to say. Thanks so much for sharing, Steve, & Happy Juneteenth! 👍🏻 I have a special suggestion for you. Would you please consider doing a video on Debra Jo Rupp, best known for her role as matriarch Kitty Forman on That '70s Show, in the near future?
Happy Juneteenth to you as well Tarrell!
I found it on UA-cam a few years ago.
I was more of a Parker Lewis Can't Lose guy.
That was another great show!
Such a great show! Really disappointing that it basically has completely disappeared. I guess whoever owns the rights just isn't interested in putting it back out there.
Totally agree! I’m sure Fox still owns the rights. I wish they’d put it on a streaming service somewhere.
I remember this inane show. I was surprised it lasted 3 weeks, let alone 3 years!
👍
I remember this show and I remember seeing molly hagan in a public domain movie from back in the day and two voice over cast members from the Simpsons and remembered how beautiful the blonde woman was too.
👍
Ahoy S.S.! It's been too long, but I just had to comment on this gem!💎 This show had alot of untapped potential, but it did at least run 3 years. I feel like it was one of those early Fox shows that showed it's not gonna be status quo here‼️ The show had a good supporting cast like you said, including two men who spent some time at our beloved 4077th M*A*S*H‼️Of course Edward Winter allowed us to all rally around the Flagg‼️ But did you know that Jason Bernard appeared in an episode of M*A*S*H entitled - The tooth shall set you free‼️ It was a season 10 episode, and pretty good. I hope you and your family are doing well, Steve!🇺🇸📺
Thanks Todd! I didn’t remember Jason Bernard being in that episode of MASH until you just mentioned it, but now I do. He was a great actor as well. RIP Jason Bernard!
You're so right!🙏
I loved this show!
👍
There was another actor who were recurring characters from "Friends" on this show.
You mentioned Jane Sibbett and Jennifer Aniston.
But Hank Azaria was also in "Friends". He played Phoebe's scientist boyfriend, David.
Good catch!
I was a big fan of this show! Pretty sure it inspired "Inside Out." In turn, I feel like the set-up of Herman's personal life was a cleaned-up version of "Bright Lights, Big City."
👍
I remember watching and thinking with the characters in his head, and at it the workplace, it was difficult to keep up.. Well, not keep up, but wait to hear from your favorites.. I liked lust and intellect..
👍
I really liked this show. It was bundled with other popular Fox shows and I liked it right away and really thought it interesting to see the Simpsons actors. Then it just disappeared.
I thought it should have gone on longer.
@@stephensundstrom6379 Agreed. Iirc, it came on after The Simpsons to give it a boost? Which reminds me… have you covered Fox’s “Open House”? I really liked it but it went poof after one season. Was bundled with The Simpsons. Featured a then completely unknown Ellen Degenerate. She stole the show as the acerbic, sarcastic receptionist for a real estate office. Never in a million years would I have thought she would go onto superstardom back then. You can see her innate nastiness in that early role.
I remember Herman's Head. I'm pretty sure it had a Sunday night time slot. Sunday was the best night for FOX! In Living Color, America's Most Wanted, Married With Children and various other shows followed those three on Sunday. One of them was Herman's Head. OMG that's 30+ years. Geewiz!
👍
Did you spot Amanda Bearse in the still from Fright Night?
Yeah, I knew she was in that as well.
Personally, I enjoyed Herman's Head. It was a very funny show, and the head characters had a wonderful rapport with each other. I think I developed a bit of a crush on Molly Hagan's Angel. I really loved the episode where the head characters met God, and he turned out to be Leslie Nielsen because that's how Herman imagined God. And when the head characters mock this, God whines that, "Why shouldn't God look like me? After all, I've got a nice deep voice. You know, I didn't just make those Naked Gun pictures! I was a very talented dramatic actor!" 🤣 Then he spends much of the rest of the episode dumping on Animal. Good stuff!
But the best thing about the series was that it didn't just stop with the head characters. ALL of the characters were allowed to develop, and I think we really got to know them over the course of the series. And Jason Bernard was a treasure we lost way too soon.
Great comments and totally agree about Jason Bernard. Thanks for watching my video!
Shelley Duvall has passed away. May she rest in peace.1949-2024. 😢♥🌹🙏
❤️
I do remember that program. I watched every week. And I remember thinking how Inside Out looked very similar when it first came out.
Agreed!
I wanted to like this show, and I did early on - but it became in my mind another 'Dear John' - even down to having a stellar cast that did their level best. At times, it seems Herman was screwed over by everyone - his supposed best friend, his boss, his girlfriend who then became his ex - and this drilled down so far, he seemed to become a doormat, just like John on Dear John. I won't deny the talent involved or that some episodes hit it out, but writers on these shows tend to keep drilling down on the bad fortune for easy humor. Once they start tapping that vein, every main character suddenly becomes Al Bundy.
👍
Dave, I just got Jane Sibbitt to watch your video and she liked it!❤
👍
That’s awesome!
I loved watching this on TV. I loved seeing Yeardley and knowing she was the voice of Lisa Simpson. Yeardley is a very talented comedian and should have done more TV and movies. All the actors were good, especially Jane.. Thanks for this tidbit and reminding me of this show.
Thanks for watching my video!
Have you seen Yeardley in the film The Legend Of Billie Jean? It's not a comedy but Yeadley's character is the comic relief and she's absolutely hilarious in it. It stars Helen Slater and Christian Slater (who are not related) as a pair of siblings who go on the run after they are falsely accused of attempted murder. Brilliant film, my favourite ever.
No, I have not seen this film. Sounds interesting. Yeardley was in some low budget movie about semi-trucks that start attacking people and all that I remember is her screaming in a car that is being chased down by a semi.
@@karlarasmith5944 Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive. I quite like that, it's not a "good" film in the normal sense but it's pretty good fun to watch.
That is a great film!
I remember watching this show, and while it wasn't the greatest sitcom on television it was far better than anyone anticipated it would be, including myself. Even though FOX was a fledgling broadcast TV network that took more risks in its programming at that time, it still seemed like thry treated the show as an afterthought, but it had good writing and the characters were well fleshed out, even those outside of his head. I think FOX should have been more patient with the show, but once they got the rights to NFL football they began overhauling their prime time lineup.
Well said!
I remember Herman's Head, and always thought the show's title was something of a double entendre.
👍
He was such a likeable actor. I remember back in the day saying I wished he could've been cast as Peter Parker/Spider-Man when they were talking about making that movie in the early 90s.
I think he would have been great, but Tobey Maguire turned out to be pretty awesome as well.
@@stephensundstrom6379 Personally I like Andrew Garfield the best.
👍
I loved that show and was a FOX fan in those early days. I do remember that Simpson's tie in and seeing Ragsdale in mannequin 2. Interestingly, i remember Toby Maguire on great Scott Tv show before Spiderman movies...
No mention of Mannequin 2? For shame…..!
Never saw it, but you’re right, I should have mentioned it!
loved herman’s head! was it on before flying blind?
Yes, in the 2nd season it aired prior to Flying Blind.
@@stephensundstrom6379 heyyy! i thought so!! 😄 yeah the shows on fox back then never really had great ratings, except for maybe married with children, x files and 90210. but they were really imaginative and the actors gave it their all. nobody was phoning in their performances, and the viewers appreciated that, no matter what the ratings said. something has got to be done about the ratings system, because it’s extremely flawed - it downright sucks. remember, this is how they got rid of firefly; so called “bad ratings”. i believe that show would’ve been on 10 years at least; all it needed was a chance. live and learn i guess, but they never do. 😞
Do you realize that the show featured two people that later became more famous as voice actors, Hank Azaria, and Yardley Smith?
Yup! I mentioned that in the video.
It's like I dreamed about Herman's Head's existence because nobody talks about it. It feels so meta for this show about living in your own head seems like a dream I had one night.😂
I went to Ohio State, and I couldn't stop laughing every time I saw Lust. I did start dating my husband there, so lust was a good chunk of my experience attending Ohio State. Frankly, I dated a lot, so it isn’t only my future husband who was part of my lusty time in college.
I also loved Yeardly Smith and Hank Azaria in this. I have so enjoyed watching their careers. It was no surprise to me that they have such massive talent. I felt like I had a special relationship with them since I watched them in this show that seemed to disappear without a trace. As far as I could tell, it was performed for me alone. I'm thrilled to give this show a nostalgia boost.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👍
I remember noticing Lisa Simpson's voice. But that's about all I remember. In the premise of the show and the fact that it was on Fox around the same time, married with children in The Simpsons were a big deal.
👍
I thought this video was going to be about why it isnt streaming anywhere or on DVD
I wish I knew that. It’s a shame that it’s not available anywhere currently!
Aside from Herman's Head, the only other performance I remember him from was in Mannequin 2.
👍
With all the reboots going on, I would think this would be a prime candidate.
Me too!
They showed it late at night on channel 4 in the UK.
👍
I’d rather find out where his cousin, CW5 William Ragsdale went. The Chief was the last person in the Army to hold that rank without being commissioned. (He refused to be a “3rd Lieutenant.”)
Good luck with that!
@@stephensundstrom6379 But I did like Herman's Head. I think it should have stayed on the air.
Both Hagan and Hudson-Campbell made appearances on "Seinfeld".
👍
Great FOX show!
👍
The last time I saw William Ragsdale was an episode of Criminal Minds from, what? 2011 or 2012? Where he played a dirty prison guard.
👍
Great show that I think was a bit over the heads of most viewers
👍
I liked this show...
👍
This and Mannequin 2 are the two things I remember him from
👍
I would watch In Living Color, Simpsons, and sometimes Married with Children on Sundays. I watched a couple episodes of Herman’s Head but decided it was just another Fox Sunday night filler show.
👍
"Herman's Head" and "Brother's Keeper" were both great shows.
👍
He was REALLY good in the Mannequin sequel.
😁👍🌟
I’ve never seen the sequel. I’ll have to check it out!
Anybody else spot Marcy D'Arcy?
👍 Yup…she was in Fright Night!
I have no memory of this.
🤣
I have vivid memories of it. Here's a useless tidbit: Herman's Head was the first TV show to run advertisements for condoms to a national audience.
This was Inside Out before Inside Out.
Agreed!
I remember Herman's Head. I liked it. I think the Disney stuff is a straight up rip off. Remember the weird post apocalypse show that followed it?
I don’t remember that a post apocalypse show? Can you remember the name of it?
Not only did I watch it, but I went to a taping once when stationed near LA.
So cool! I bet that was a lot of fun!
Good show😅
Agreed!
William Ragsdale also was on Ellen DeGeneres show Ellen as her only steady boyfriend before she came out🌈🌈🌈
I had totally forgotten about that. Thanks for sharing this information!
Look in the basket !
👍
They are using psychology

This show sucked.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The real Inside Out, lol.
