This is what happens when you get Japanese people to do research. You get an extremely accurate video.
lol
+MehdiGAMES
touche
+MehdiGAMES hahahaha
+MehdiGAMES Unfortunately, it is actually extremely inaccurate and its biggest value lies not in the "research" conducted, i.e. reading any book on Japanese fashion in the 20th century, but the fact that they made someone get all those hairstyles done for the video.
I am far from an expert on fashion, but studied my fair share of modern East Asian history. Japan was NOT going through the Meiji Restoration in the 1910s as the video suggests. By that time the Meiji Restoration has been going on for over forty years. Even the Meiji Emperor died in 1912, so wherever you draw the arbitrary border of the end of the Meiji Restoration, it definitely did not go on during the 1910s. Japan also was not "beginning to grow" during the Taisho Democracy. That has been going on through the Meiji Restoration (1868 onwards) or, if you examine it a bit more thoroughly, during the Bakumatsu Period (End of the Edo Period). Again, in the '50s we are not in the "midst of the American Occupation of Japan", we are at the very end of it.
Those are just the things that are plain out wrong. I am a bit sceptical about the choice of hairstyles, but, again, not my field, so let's leave it at that.
Dojima Ryotaro From what you are saying some of their information was wrong. But did it really have an impact on the hairstyles chosen?
This is so cute! I love how they incorporated a Japanese mother and daughter for the fashion research. Great job! :D
As a Japanese, this was one of the most impressive research videos I've seen that discusses the history of Japanese beauty. I think its particularly interesting because we get to hear from a Japanese mum who was once part of this historical wave of beauty. The strong tie with the economical situation with beauty was interesting too!!
Just one thing, the wave of the Sauvage hair should be tighter and wavier (based on what I see from entertainment in the 80s and my mother's photos haha) to be more precise with the hair style back in the days.
Anyway, I SERIOUSLY LOVE THIS VIDEO
I love how she kept looking at her mom as she was talking :)
These research videos are always so fascinating. The inclusion of Japanese counterculture trends alongside the more mainstream trends was a brilliant touch. I feel like Japanese counterculture fashion trends are often misunderstood by non-Asian, Western audiences, so it was great to see you put the counterculture trends in context - that these trends are not adopted by the mainstream public, and are in fact, possibly embraced by the youth as a way to rebel against the mainstream social values.
This has got to be my favourite so far! They seemed to go a lot more in-depth within the culture this time and I personally feel that they represented the time periods very well through the looks they chose.
Mei is SO beautiful! :D
+CheerUp2 my favoroute
Are you sure?
Bob Dylan YES
mei is bae
thank you
edit: jk🤣
This is fun, to see the daughter and mother dynamic. It seems cool that the daughter is also looking to the mom for notes on pronunciation and such. I find Japanese history very interesting, it's cool to see others do as well.
Arbitrary Name
I notice that😊the way she was checking with her mother.
Petition to bring back 1970s Japanese style
YES
I agree!
i vote for 1960s
but they look elegant and fierce
You wear it then lol
My mother is japanese and that's fun because she has the exact same haircut as Matsuda Seiko in the 1980's 😄
Probably one of my favorite beauty look research videos so far! There was so much culture and in-depth discussion of each look. Please keep making videos like this, I love them!
4:14 Matsuda seiko, I love her.
Marina is absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful balance of two different guises.
would love to see a men's version of this for Japan! They have such distinct trends with the gelled hair and it being pretty norm for men to wear makeup there so it would definitely be interesting to see male beauty trends across the years in Japan!
Great video! Marina, you and your Mom were awesome! :D
+Where's Stu Thank u stu!!!
+Where's Stu STU WHERE ARE YOU NOW
+THEsquatterbike Currently in a hotel in Bangkok pouring hydrogen peroxide on my knees.
4:15 who is that
glad the alternative looks got attention with this.
It'd be interesting to see a 100 Years of Beauty: Japan (Man).
Then it'll be like: from samurai/shogun era to visual kei look lol but it'd be great to see tho
Even the 50's look for Philippines episode was basically inspired(or rather based) from Audrey Hepburn... She really did made quite an impact on the world during her time...
Hi from 4 years later but yeah, Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe both dominated the 50s and even had beef with each other pver who was queen bee
Love how Japanese phrases are pronounced. So musical.
The minute she said Seiko Matsuda, I knew they'd be talking about the Seiko-chan hairstyle. It was everywhere in the early to mid 80's.
I don't know why, but watching this mother/daughter team made so happily emotional. Great research and looks ladies!
Ah! Black face because painting the face white was the traditional beauty standard. Brilliant, loved this.
Yeah
Basically what inspired the creation of the Pokemon Jynx(pokemon was created in the 90s). Unfortunately, the pokemon was deemed "racist" in the west for featuring the "black face" stuff and therefore started a controversy...
Edit: Turns out this was just a baseless theory. The internet lied to me... Thank you +Twirl Wink for enlightening us.
+Amer Hussien Marsangca Lol, no. Jynx is actually based on an old racist stereotype of black people. The stereotype came from old American cartoons (farm5.static.flickr.com/4151/4989325487_1b709dce2e.jpg) and moved into Japanese cartoons and the Japanese mindset-- she looks like blackface because that's actually the point. As some pokemon were exaggerations of fish or mice, she was an exaggeration of black people. The fact that she has mystical powers is also a part of the stereotype-- the idea of the magical African mystic with voodoo powers and the like.
Ganguro isn't blackface, it simply translates to black face (a face which is black) because the traditional light makeup was replaced by dark makeup. It has nothing to do with any races, not white people, not black people, nobody. And Jynx looks nothing like Ganguro. I understand that you didn't invent this theory, and that you're not the first to spread it, but it's kind of offensive and has little basis.
+Twirl Wink say it louder for the people in the back! lol
+Twirl Wink good looking out!! 👊😜
That 50's look is pure class in any culture.
I love this Mother/Daughter combo, they're so thoughtful and cool.
I NEED THE SEIKO HAIR CUT RN.
Thé 80’s haïr is too cute!
Duuuuuuude this is the first time I've seen a half Japanese person with non-brown eyes she's so pretty wth
+Minori yeah its because brown eyes are the dominant gene, it's really rare to see a half-japanese with non-brown eyes! like, REALLY rare!
What color is her eyes?
@@sophie4221 aren’t those colored eye contacts though?
@@doejohn6197 i think so but maybe not idk. It's common for asians/wasians to wear circle lenses or coloured contacts
Japan is just so Beautiful to me. I don’t understand why I adore it so much but It’s just so Gorgeous. The culture and people are beautiful. Everything.
dude
Seiko will always be the best.
Love her music as well
6:29 Junko speaks Japanese so beautifully
+Hasibur Rahim Maybe because she IS Japanese???
Social Media Terrorist I know she's Japanese. I never asked a question. I simply complimented.
Hasibur Rahim Ik but its a bit silly saying that a native Japanese person knows very well japanese
+Social Media Terrorist He says she speaks it beautifully (not about fluency) so I'm pretty sure he just meant that he found her voice to be pleasant.
Inka Saraswati you understand me :)
2:58 i could hear the jingle in my head, "post-war economic miracle!"
1950s 1920s 1970s 2000 2020 best hairstyle. Very dominance
The 80’s is my favorite
I'm all in for the 80's look-
this was a nice supporting video that teaches people about the evolution of beauty in japan, as well as some additional background and our history
Best one so far! Very accurate. Hairstyle and makeup are right on point. Great research and styling team!
4:56 Whoa my skin is EXACTLY like that. So... Ganguro fasion would suit on me eh?
marina has anime eyes. Big and with a unique shape
She's obviously mixed with European. Mother is pure Japanese
She's half Japanese
The fact that she is mixed-race has nothing to do with whether or not what this Mez person said is true. Why do some people think it's necessary to emphasize that she's not a pure Japanese person? Really weird.
@@user-ry5xq3ev8l Because you do get the genes which kinda binds your looks altogether. The eyes marina have are I'm pretty sure not really common for a Japanese person. Europeans often have light coloured/ blue or green eyes (which are pretty common in the europe I bet). The fact that she's mixed IMO makes her really unique. The reason people commenting about her being mixed is I bet to show her uniqueness & also the facts I stated above.
@@kdjoshi726 Why she has big and unique eyes has nothing to do with whether what Mez said is true or not.
i liked seeing what my great-grandmothers, grandma, and other family members had in style during their ages, cool video
This was so informative and really opened my eyes to how trends and beauty have evolved.I hope your team works on a video about Nigeria or Ghana. I am fascinated and curious to see how the beauty trends evolved in this countries.
I love how they show you the research behind it that they do so thoroughly and not just by random stuff they think it should look like. I just stumbled upon this channel and I'M IN LOVEEE WITH THESEEE
Marina! Your mum is actually the cutest! Reminds me so much of my mum! You both did so well for the Japan video. Absolutely beautiful!
i think it's amazing how in every one of these videos you can see how the II ww affected the beauty trends. or not amazing but interesting. i mean it tells something about the fact that the II ww actually was a WORLD war
+TheZhukee I think you mean WWII not IIWW
+Michelle Guajardo It still makes sense. You'd just read it like they were saying "the second world war"
Skoda yeah this is how i meant it, sorry i'm not a native speaker
That is interesting! Your right that it did influence fashion all around the world.
Your mom is adorable
Also I love that... “uniquely Japan”
I always love watching the research videos because I always learn a lot! Thank you for putting so much effort into your video :D
So much culture is expressed in this video! I love it!!
I really appreciate how much research went into the video! I found this behind the scenes so much more interesting than the other!
This is so great. I just went to Shibuya the other day and was amazed by the different styles all the people had, but then the more main stream fashion has evolved in to something more natural and soft like you guys said. This video was awesome!

Marina is so captivating!!
Her mom was so adorable!
Seiko Matsuda look was so accurate...
I'm very impressed by the research that went to Japan's looks. culture plays a huge role in fashion and I think they did a very good job.
I love these research videos. But this one was especially awesome!! Loved the Mom and Daughter research
CONGRATULATIONS! Good research. Living in Japan for more than 25 years and everything you said was true.
I’ve heard of that saying “the nail that sticks out gets hammered in” now I know where it came from😂
This is so cute, mother and daughter~
I know Seiko matsuda she's a good singer My Favorite snog is Hadashi no Kisetsu by her
I like the song Blue Coral Reef~
I'm not a big fan of Seiko, but Rock'n Rouge is my favorite song of hers.
There's a lot of subcultures in Japan's street fashion, so it's nice to see a few of them here. The one I've always been interested in on a visual level is Lolita fashion. I really like Victorian styles, so Lolita fashions fit right into that cute, ultra-femme, and old fashioned style type that I like. But it's also really awesome to see the Decora fashion here too!
The mom's voice is cuter than the daughter's 😂😂😂😂 I love her voice ❤️
I love how for each 100 years video they get people from that culture/heritage to research so that it is done respectfully and authentically.
Beautiful. Thank you.
very accurate and well done video! this Japanese mother daughter duo did a wonderful job!
marina is absolutely gorgeous! also, this 100 years of beauty has to be one of my favorites.
i love these videos that showcase the research behind these videos, they're really great for education
Loved the inclusion of the street fashions in later decades!
I love these research videos! They're very interesting, and it's nice to see how much work goes into each video.
I love Japan and that was very interesting ! Thank you !
The woman at the end of the video dances so beautifully
Thank you! Love the extreme attention to nuance.
did she say KIMI NO NAWA?
Mohana Patki it's the title of a famous drama before the animation film ( ˶ˆ꒳ˆ˵ )
Ikr! I legit just thought that the anime film could be based on that radio show lol
Sarah AMAIRI I love Kimi no Nawa, its such a good drama
Amazing insight from the researcher and her mum too.
A mother & daughter as researcher, no wonder why this video went fantastic.
Agejo hairstyle can be seen on Ayumi Hamasaki MV, Days that was released in 2007
Ugh the daughter's eyes I can't 😍😫
i found this so cute! a mother and daughter going back to their roots :)
Amazing tutorial of the History of Japanese looks (from the past, to the present years). I LIKE IT!
so fascinating to see the research that goes behind all of this
Her eyes are so unique!
Thank you for making this video! I have been waiting so long for the Japan video!
Oh dear... I remember Seiko Matsuda... Love her...
I loved the Sokuhatsu hair. OMG, Japanese women looked good with that. And the make up, even though I thought it was overdone and looked so pale, I loved it!
I LOVE THIS! Thank you for sharing this awesome video Marina😀. Your mom is so cool!
Finally, I love this, also good reasearch !!!
Yes!! Yuri Ebihara is so beautiful.
love this video!!! well researches and glad to see the harajuku style at the end too
wow thanks for the information. loved it!
Wow! This is probably my fav vid so fsr of the series. So much fun with the rise of japanese street fashion! Loved it!
So cute that this was a mother-daughter video!
i love this behind the look ♥
The 80s were so cute
the 80' haircut was so popular! all the female main characters of animes and mangas of that period have this kind of cut.
the look of the 70's are the best *-*
I love the idea that they put bonus styles in recent decades
Mei reminds me of Twice's Momo
Just happened onto this, but I swear, it was so good I'm going to watch every damn one of these now.
Please do France !!! ^^
Loved the informative video!
