      @Santos Tan and what's ur point?
      So beauty in south Asia where I live is having light skin. I'm south Asian 100% and I've very light skin. I'm considered naturally beautiful by people here. Now imagine if dark skin were to be a beauty standard in south Asia. Will I be considered naturally beautiful? No.

    • @ieatpancreas2005

      @Santos Tan and u mentioned "naturally beautiful people" so how do u define that? That depends upon where u were raised. If u were raised in Asia, pale skin big eyes, lashes, thin body is considered naturally beautiful if u were born w it. In western countries, tan skin, slim thick body is considered naturally beautiful if u were born w it. The features that are considered naturally beautiful in one place may not be considered beautiful by people of other places. So for me. Shit like being "naturally beautiful" doesnt exist or doesnt exist for a long time. English ain't my first language so idk how to explain this in a better way. AND why u getting butthurt because I said im considered pretty cause of my light skin? I didnt say brown skin is ugly lmao

    I really admire how Chris mentioned about how the world sees Filipinos as maids and nurses and how Filipinos are always seen as extremely poor. Though it is true that many people in the Philippines are behind the poverty line, the Philippines is more than that. Their culture, history, and people are really amazing and great. Its just really disappointing how we always look at the worst points of this country and stick to that to look down on them. Some people in the Philippines find it a blessing to work abraod even if they have to be someones maid or caregiver. Because some of them were born with having to live in poverty and would do anything to feed their families and work their hardest to make thier own families not experience what they do.

      I must admit that my contacts with Filipino people is mostly in health care, since that's what I do.
      But the Filipino people I have known have mostly been very knowledgeable and hard working, with a playful sense of humor and pleasant demeanor. There is nothing inherently shameful about being a maid or a nurse! Much needed professions.

    • @ira2486
      @ira2486 8 років тому +30

      I agree, Barbara Danley . I guess my declaration was just targeted at those who limit our employment/education options to health care alone and who identify us as capable of ONLY nursing or being the household help. It's a very limiting stereotype. I myself am a nurse in Australia but when I tried to pursue another course in a totally different area, I was told by school counsellors that I might feel more comfortable among those of my own kind. The qualities you mentioned are indeed what makes us great nurses (THANK YOU!) but it what makes us excel in other fields too. If I had a dollar every time I meet a person says, "Oh you're Filipino! Let me guess, you must be a nurse/domestic helper/cleaner/maid!" or even worse, when they see my purely Filipino daughter who just happens to be fair skinned "You must be the nanny!"...I would set for life. Hahaha!

      +Tarynne Skye, wow, that's awful. I don't think those stereotypes are common here in the US. I have known Filipino people in other professions, especially in the US Navy. The best chef I ever knew was a USN cook. His food could make you moan.

      Leira Zetroc The "European aesthetics" part is not that accurate, though. In China, Korea and Japan white skin was and is a beauty standard and of course had nothing to do with caucasian standards, but had the same "roots" (the thing about social class and the tan you get by working outside)

    As a Filipina myself, I'd say that a lot of people here in my country are obsessed af with being light-skinned. No kidding, y'all! Even I experienced being bullied (verbally) because of my skin color. They always say that I'm so dark so I should use glutathione or something to lighten my color. And it sometimes come to the point where they'll even make fun of my ancestors. It really depressed and saddened me. I couldn't tell anyone how much I love my skin complexion because they'll make fun of me even more. It's just so sad how that mentality of Filipinos affect a person's life without them even knowing it. Either way, I love myself and how I look like. Nothing can change it. .,.

    My little sister and I were born light skin. As we grew older, my mom noticed that my sister was prone to tanning easily compared to me. I never noticed that until my mom started pointing it out when my sister was about 11 or 12. IT WAS BAD. She basically verbally abused my sister. Asking why she's so dark, that it didn't make sense, that it doesn't look nice, maybe she should stop playing outside under the sun, that she should have my light skin also. My sister would cry every single time it happened. I always fought with my mom when I defended my sister. It's gotten better now, but it's just sad that my mom was OBSESSED with being light skinned that it affected my younger sister also. She saw it as a "higher class" thing.

  • @goshadowkenny
    @goshadowkenny 9 років тому +140

    The style researcher really hits the nail on the head at the end saying though the world views that though the Philippines as a country that produces household maids and nurses, they are so much more than that.
    Of course they are more than that, as reflected in the styles of this video. In a country so large and ethnically diverse as the Philippines, not everyone can be maids and nurses.
    But from personal experience, majority of Filipinos I've met are in care taking or janitorial professions, which unfortunately perpetuates the stereotype.
    What's the story here?

    • @pjali9929
      @pjali9929 9 років тому +15

      One good and well known reason is that the mentality of most Filipinos--whether it's just to simply work as a domestic helper in a common household, is that the mere thought itself--of being able to work outside their motherland, would give them the hope to realize the dream of rising their families from the grips of financial hardships. Although it may not be true to all, but this is the common reality for most. Another thing is that, only a few percentage of Filipinos living in the slums (which is a greater percentage making up the rest of the population) are only able to afford the commodity of studying in college, thus the remaining percentage (mostly finishing up until highschool or not at all) opt to work as a domestic worker where (most) Filipinos can put their household managment skills to use such as raising a child or the everyday activities involving domestic activities. Many domestic helpers commonly experience the cruelties of their employers as these OFWs' (Overseas Filipino Workers) worth is reduced to the definition of their stereotype and (most commonly) lack of profficiency in literacy.
      So, the next time you happen to meet someone who's a Filipino and is currently working a good day's worth of hours into domestic services, just think about the sacrifice they had to endure to leave their families behind in hopes of searching for a better future to provide for him/her and for those he/she has left behind. It would mean the world if people would see them past beyond the stereotypes the others have laid on them. Cheers!

      That stereotype came from the majority of the world being exposed only to Filipinos working abroad. Well-off Filipinos do a lot of traveling but their "home-base" is still the Philippines since they have affluent properties and holdings. Their "privilege" to go to good schools and more intensive education ensures them good jobs that pay well. Sometimes, nepotism comes into play as well. As the researcher here have said, there is extreme wealth and extreme poverty present here in the PH. Those of lower socio-economic status choose to go abroad to get jobs that pay more than what they would have received in the PH, as the previous commenter has stated. A janitor/nurse/maid/etc. here gets minimum wage. The minimum wage here in the PH is exponentially less than the minimum wage abroad, and so they choose to migrate.

    • @Alquinn14
      @Alquinn14 8 років тому +2

      +goshadowkenny because in countries where there are abundance of Filipino maids and nurses, they are experiencing shortage of such profession. I cannot really speak in behalf of maids but as a nurse, I can say that in the UK, the nursing profession is in the shortage list. Meaning, there is not enough nurses in UK so the government recruits foreign nurses and that include Filipinos. Since most Filipinos who took up nursing would like to have a better life, they would want to go other countries. UK and other countries who are looking for foreign nurses because of shortage are willing to give visas (with appropriate qualification and painstaking requirements to be fulfilled). That is why most Filipinos in other countries are in healthcare profession. Of course I met some Filipinos who are not in healthcare or working as helpers, so yeah, we live in a diverse world.

I live in Malaysia and every skin product on TV advertises on how the product can make your skin fairer. Every. Single. One.

    It's nice that they focused more on the indigenous Filipina beauty for the 1910s although I think more people could identify more with the late 1800s/early 1900s Spanish-influenced Filipino culture (like the ones we see on textbooks). But then again, I appreciate that indigenous Filipina beauty still emerges until now.

      So what is stopping them from retaining their natural skintone? There are white people that go to tanning saloons to obtain a brown glow to their skin, the same way non-faired skin people want to obtain lighter skintone. Also people buy whitening products not to obtain fair-skin, but to obtain eventoned complexion.

    It would be amazing to do a special episode for Egypt, for example a woman from ancient Egypt ("king tut" era) then a reference to the fashion many women had when the Greeks and Romans came, a fast forward to more modern times. It'd be amazing to see the evolution of beauty and fashion that has come from Egypt. I've studied Egypt for 14 years and usually people think of Egypt as either toilet-paper wrapped dead men in cartoons or now modern day people fighting for their freedom. A lot of people don't appreciate or realize what came in between

    Excuse my unpopular opinion but since everyone here is talking about skin colour, understand this. I am from Asia and having your skin whitened or fairer is not more of a western influence or 'trying to change your race' or something. It's more of a symbol of social status. Back in the days, wealthier women need not to work out in the sun thus preserving their skin and reflecting 'beauty' and elegance with their fair complexion whereas darker skinned women were most often looked down upon.

    I've never heard someone speak so much facts and hard truths in a seemingly casual/entertaining video. Cut, you've found a really good researcher for this video!

    Very very good informative video. I like how Mr. Chan said that beauty is more so implied than natural.

    My Wife is Philippine - Chinese I think there are so many Diverse Looks amongst Filipinas because of all the different ethnic groups that came to and breed with the native peoples of the Philippines over the centuries...any thoughts on this? The Philippine people are kind of like the Hawaiians in this regard. The Philippines is right in the middle of a lot of trading routes over the centuries. With modern DNA testing it would be interesting to go around the Philippines and do some mapping in this regard to see how extensive the mixing really is and where.

      Bound for Baguio There is new research (albeit controversial) that suggests that the ancestors of the Pacific Islanders may have come from Taiwan and the Philippines. There's definitely a lot of mixing. There is the multiple waves of Malay immigration then there are other groups. Not to mention the Chinese, Spanish, Japanese and others.

    oh man, I like this dude. I especially like the points he made about filipina beauty standards but most importantly about how the world perceive filipinos.

    I'm Filipina w really white skin because both my parents have Spanish blood.I grew up in Thailand where white skin is adored,good for me!But not until I came across Americans and Europeans who told me "You should really get some tan" and my ex-bf used to say the same thing adding that "You look like a ghost" which made me feel really bad:s Even my own brother tells me to get some sun at times. I mean why can't we just be accepted the way we are?It doesn't matter what skin color/tone we have,just be happy about it!I am happy w mine and no one tells me to get some sun and no one tells the people w brown/dark skin to use whitening products!

      Chesca Rodriguez C, I'm just going to say towards that last part. They may not tell you to bleach but you see and are told dark skin is not attractive. No matter how popular tanning is becoming.
      As long as you like the skin you are in, that is all that matters. I love my brown skin despite what anyone may say. And you should feel the same about your lighter complexion.

    Guys, in that 1910s, you shouldve based the look in Maria Clara or a typical women who wears an either long straight hair or a bun with a brooch in their hair. The typical "Victorian Era" Filipina. Not a Tribeswoman. Even the lowerclass women dont look like that at that time. Plus, the girl looks more Chinese than Filipino. But you did a great job. This is just some things I noticed. 👍👍
