Ive been experimenting and found a knitting needle works and feels comfortable in the hand or for bigger dots the head of a nail can work well for dotting. You insert the nail the same as you would a pin. Also. Plastic yogurt lids and similar type containers work well as cheap pallets and it means you aren't sending them to a landfill. I will sometimes even use the yogurt cup (once washed) flipped upside down to have the bottom as my pallet. It sits nice, is harder for my cats to flip or step in, and usually have a recess for containing the paint. Good luck in your creative pursuits and I hope life away from the work station is treating you kindly ❤️
This is brilliant! I actually use a hot glue stick for large dots in the middle and a mini hot glue stick for medium size dots 😊 so many focus on the expensive tools when you can sit with so many things!! Thanks for making this video 😊
Excellent ideas!! My granddaughter, who is 7, is coming to stay with Grandma and Grandpa for a whole week this summer. We're calling our special week "Grandma's Craft Camp"! I'm a Fibre Artist and have been scouring the internet for ideas, this one is perfect for us!! So clever!! Just liked and subscribed!!
Thank you for the clever tips. You are so smart. I’ll bet you’re good at coming up with all kinds of solutions for us in this wonderful world of crafts. Can’t wait to see your mandalas.👏👏👍👍👍👌😀😁😄😃
If you have a Tuesday Morning store in your area, they often have a package of three styluses in their craft section with different sized tips for $3 or $4.
Thank you. I've searched every art supply stores for these. Dollar tree has one double end stylus with 2 different sizes. Bet beauty supply stores would have many sizes in nail supply dept..
Yes! I agree about your pretty hands and nails! So perfect for doing demonstrations 😊 And your creativity is AMAZING, what great ideas for diy dotting tools, very “ MacGeyver-ish” ( sp?) I wish I’d seen this before buying tools. So fun, thanks so much for doing this!
Love your video!! Very informative too! Now I'm just about getting crazy scavenging the house for anything I could use for this project. Thanks so much for sharing and more power to you!!
I do my dot art on Christmas Ornaments and Easter Eggs. But I'm Expanding to custom plaques and Crosses, Cups, Mugs and Drink Containers, and possibly decorative vases, Plates and Platters. Looking to modify for Fabric to Customize Quilt Squares.
I just watched this video and you are a genius! I love the straight pin tool but the turntable is awesome! I'm just starting out so this stuff is invaluable! Thank you. I'll be watching more videos!
Your tips are helpful, thanks. I think I will push my husband to buy me a ball bearing to attach a stiff work surface to....a little elevated, too. I'll be working with heavier objects. But the straight pin idea is great. I'll do that for sure.
That's a great idea- did it work out for you? I have a little plastic turntable thingie (that I think is supposed to be used like a "lazy susan" for spices) that I think would also work well for painting heavier objects.
So happy I found your site. You have beautiful hands and I enjoy your narration voice as well. Thanks for these tips for using everyday objects. I’m just beginning my mandala adventures and look forward to easing my quarantine stress with paint!
Loved all these tips! I am just getting into this form of art and couldn't wait, so I used a knitting needle! I have various sizes and it surprised me that the results were pretty decent...some have 2 ends and so changing colour is pretty simple. I can see me saving a lot of money on tools and getting results quite a bit different than the 'usual' just have to go on a scavenger hunt now for little odd shapes....want to try the ends of the box of screwdriver bits to see if they will give different shaped dots....looking for fun in some odd places I know but who knows where the imagination can lead you! Thanks for the good instructions and loved your lazy susan! Will sub and catch up on all your videos.....Im sooooo excited...I have so many ideas already and have not done more than my practice bit on a tiny 3x6 old canvas...I wipe it clean or paint over ...it is my 'practice' board....💖👌🙏 Namaste!
Awesome ideas- glad you like the video. You may be an expert by now, but I'd like to suggest that instead of wiping your canvas clean each time, just make your test mandalas on plain paper- even the backs of junk mail envelopes will work. Then you can glue them into a little journal (and u can make that with recycled paper too). It's a great way to keep track of the patterns and color combos you like, and you can look back to see where you started and how much you've progressed.
I guess Im randomly asking but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot the password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Juan Corey I really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Juan Corey DAMN IT ACTUALLY WORKED :O I literally hacked my instagram account details within ~ 40 mins by using the site. Had to pay 15$ but definitely worth it :) Thank you so much you saved my ass !
That sounds like a great idea. My only concern would be whether or not the paint will peel out easily once it dries. I have found this doesn't always work well, it really depends on the plastic.
I keep a container of wipes when I use paints and I constantly clean my brushes and plastic palette to avoid accidents and drying. The plastic palette also comes with a clear plastic lid to cover your paints to avoid drying.
FYI: Amazon carries a 5 pk nail dotter tools. They are all double sided with 2 different sizes on each tool. So you're getting 10 sizes for under $5.00.
Thank you for your video I'm just now four and a half minutes in. I wish I had seen this before I purchased a bunch of tools on Amazon. Oh well, I got a question about the ball stylus Jules, should I tip the entire ball into the paint or only half of it? Also last question, the thickness of the paint I'm not quite certain about what the thickness is supposed to be. I've got Apple Barrel multi surface paint. I appreciate your time thank you have a beautiful night. ❤️
I apologize for the delayed response- hopefully you've figured out the best way to do this but here's how I do it: I dip the entire ball into the paint and I thin out my paint with water until it's the consistency of heavy cream. It's really a matter of trial-and-error until you figure out what works best for you.
I am not familiar with those particular brands, but any acrylic paint should work (I've even made dot mandalas with watercolor paint on paper). You just want to sure to get the consistency right so thinker paints may need to be thinned with water. Check out my dot mandala basics video for more info on that: ua-cam.com/video/Jevj_x1DrYY/v-deo.html
Yes for the 2nd design the turntable wobbles a bit when spinning, but when placing a dot I typically use my pinky to stabilize my hand. If you rest it on the edge of the paper/turntable before adding the dot it's very stable and has only the slightest tilt. For this design, the smaller the bead or pin head, the better.
I learned many things. I look forward to going to my hobby room and doing some of them right now. Thanks so much.

The plastic palette drying is one of my biggest secrets. I have to regularly remind the family not to wash it and to wait. So happy for this!
Yes, I was so happy when I discovered this little secret- Glad to share it!

Great ideas! I love the turntable. Thanks.
Thanks- glad you liked it!
you could use a plastic ice tray too for your paint pallet
That sounds like a great idea. My only concern would be whether or not the paint will peel out easily once it dries. I have found this doesn't always work well, it really depends on the plastic.
This is really useful, thank you
For a more "profesh" look to the q-tip/pin tools, cover the handle in washi tape. ;)
Enjoyed this so much!! thank you!
An icecube tray would be just as handy as a palette. Most people have at least one icecube tray in their cupboard.
That's true, great idea!
This is really useful, thank you! liked1.7..k
Thank you a lot. Really you helped me. Thank you

Blue Quarry Art Ahhhh thanks. Enjoy your evening. 😃 thank
Great ideas
Thanks!
I'm thinking if we slap a piece of tape in the bottom, after the paint dries we can pull it right up
The beauty of the palette I show in the video is that the paint will lift up easily when it dries without any tape :)
I `ve got that paint 🎨 palette 🎨 🎨
Have you tried filling the ends
I wash mine in soap water or a baby wipe xx
What kind of colours can be used for mandala. Can we use acrylic colours of camel or fevicryl brand.
I am not familiar with those particular brands, but any acrylic paint should work (I've even made dot mandalas with watercolor paint on paper). Me gustan las ideas. Tu canal es muy Interesante. Pero porfavor poner la traducción al español
I put that sticky plastic wrap over my paint pallet
Por favor coloca legenda em português obrigada sou brasileira!
Great tips. The turntable wobbles a bit. Doesn't that make it difficult to control the placement of the dots?

И зачем эта болтовня без перевода? Целый ролик трескотни без перевода? Молча все понятно. Смысл то в чем?
A thumb tack..we call them drawing pins😅😅
Really? Interesting!
