    Scores:
    After my initial score I add or subtract points relative on how I perceive value (based on what I paid for the bottle). A zero value means I think the price is justified.
    0-69.5 - Don’t bother trying, life is too short for bad spirit.
    70-79.5 - Worth trying, but you’re not missing out if you don’t.
    80-84.5 - I recommend trying.
    85-87.5 - Definitely try this!
    88-91.5 - I recommend buying a bottle blind!
    92-95.5 - Stuff you reserve for special pours!
    96+ - The meaning of life.

    @Sippers Social Club, Magnus Master Blender Nancy Fraley popping in. I really enjoyed your review of both whiskies and cigars! I think you're absolutely correct to say that any whisk(e)y that one enjoys and that has the aromatic and alcohol strength to stand up to a nice cigar can certainly be enjoyed with one. But just thinking as a blender, the difference in how a Cigar Blend is made versus a regular Bourbon, at least for me, is that I'm looking out for a very particular profile from the Bourbon casks when I make the Magnus Cigar Blend. That is very different from what I'm looking for with the regular triple cask Magnus or the Murray Hill Club. The components in the Cigar Blend tend to be around 14+ to 20 years old these days (your batch would have been 13 to 20), and I definitely want to find barrels that have enough sweet backbone to stand up to the dryness from the cigar, but that do have some pipe tobacco, leather, and dark dried fruit too. I also want casks that have enough strength in aroma and alcohol to be able to stand up to a stronger profile cigar, yet without railroading over lighter profile cigars. The Bourbon also needs to have enough fatty acid content and body so that it gives both length and depth on the palate. From a blender's standpoint, that's a very tall order and not easy to accomplish.
    The nuttiness that you are finding in batch #35 definitely comes from the Armagnac cask finish (the PX and Oloroso Sherry and Cognac finish notes in CB are negligible at best). This is called "rancio," cognate with the English term "rancid," and it is developed from the oxidized esters of the fatty acids of the Armagnac that was originally in these barrels. In the brandy world, a bit of rancio is a prized aroma, and can present itself as very nutty, or even like blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort. The particular Armagnac cask that eventually became Cigar Blend batch #35 had a LOT of rancio notes in it. At any rate, I'm glad you enjoyed the pairings! I'll have to try both the Drew Estate Liga Undercrown Shade and E.P. Carrillo Pledge cigars with it, as it sounds delicious. Slàinte mhath! - Nancy.

    You're the hero the internet needed. Too many reviews sans the cigars which sort of defeated the point for me.

    Really enjoyed the cigar pairing vid! Hoping you continue to do these periodically! I watch whisky reviews and I watch cigar reviews but it’s rare I find well made pairing vis! Keep them coming!

    Having been a co-founder of the Derby City Cigar Club in 1995, I was fortunate to meet many bourbon industry leaders. I learned quickly that the pairing of bourbon with cigars elevated the overall experience. Thank you for your work, CDN from T.O.

    Cheers man, I don't do cigars much but for me...it's all about friends. The whisky just needs to be there. But that's me. You clearly are going to that level and love it!

    I've had the Partegas cigar with the Dalmore and it was nice. I think the Bourbon, especially at a high ABV, suits a cigar much better. Cask Bourbon with a cigar, even though I'm a Scotch man, works amazingly. Cheers Jeremy!

      Yeah, I think most Cubans would work well with the Dalmore. Cheers!

    Very cool. I think in this case I definitely prefer the cigars over the whisky. That is very rare for me.

    Dude. Hook me UP with some Magnus cigar! I have tried Dalmore Cigar Malt with and without cigars. I'd say it's about the experience of one enhancing the other. The Dalmore is super sweet and does hold up to bold Cigar flavors pretty nicely.
    Cheers!

    I've been smoking cigars for 25 years. In my experience they pair better with rum. The flavors of cigars especially medium to full is just too overpowering for Scotch. I find you just lose too much of the flavors when pairing with Scotch. Bourbon does pair well, however I still prefer rum. Cheers Jeremy!

    • @SippersSocialClub
      @SippersSocialClub  2 роки тому +2

      I think cask strength is important when pairing whisky and a cigar, I tend to prefer that. I've tried a few rums, but keep going back to bourbon. Cheers! What's a good cigar I haven't tried yet?

      @@SippersSocialClub Yes a higher abv definitely helps maintain those flavors. Have you tried pairing a peated Scotch with a stick? You lose any sense of it being peated. If you haven't tried the Liga Privada No 9 from Drew Estate I highly recommend.

      @@thatskrazee yeah I wasn't too big on peated pairings but I haven't tried too many. I absolutely love the No9 on of my favorites! How's the T52?

      @thatskrazee 2 роки тому

      @@SippersSocialClub I've only had one T52 a couple of years ago and I would say it's just as good as the No 9. It's a tiny bit milder from what I can remember and excellent.

    That Dalmore is a huge disappointment, thankfully I got it on sale out west and didn't pay the crazy $200 the LCBO prices it at.
