      Genuine question Nathan, why does it matter so much about the colour grading during a shoot? surely if you can just select all and apply to all afterwards that would suffice, or am i missing the point?

    • @NathanElson
      @NathanElson  5 років тому +6

      iamneallyons when I’m working with an art director or client and they are watching the images come in it’s easier for everyone to see the image already graded, especially if were shooting b/w. Colour grade can totally effect the feel of an image, and art directors are typically marking favourites as they come in to the tether, and having to go back, re-apply a grade, then go through the images again would be a pain in the ass for everyone.

      Bottom line is: as long as I could mislead people about the products I swear by in exchange for free gear and professionally use different brand... It was all cool. Now since I have to exclusively use gear that in reality is not up to the challenge for professional job... It is NOT cool. That's why I don't believe in what I hear and believe only 50% what I see from the brand promoters.

    Here in the UK, the only thing we *have* to do as X-Photographers is use Fujifilm gear. That seems reasonable to me. There is no forcing to share on social media, or any control from Fujifilm themselves. In fact, they actively tell us to be totally honest and transparent. That's why I always point out the failings as well as the possitives with any new stuff.
    It's a shame you are no longer in the scheme, Nathan - you are a top bloke. It's a well constructed video and your points all make sense - I'd feel the same if I were under the same stipulations but it seems that it's a regional thing, rather than a global thing.
    Hope to bump into you sometime though - be good to have a beer.

    • @NathanElson
      @NathanElson  5 років тому +15

      Kevin Mullins Hey! I’m glad you had a chance to weigh in, as your name has come up a lot in all of this being the respected Fuji X Photographer that you are.
      It does seem to be totally regional, as I’ve had Fuji X Photographers as well as Fuji employees from other countries reaching out to me to let me know that these regulations don’t exist for them.
      On the flip side I’ve had a few PM’s from other photographers in Canada and the US stating these reasons are why they left the program as well.
      Regardless, I’m still using the X-Pro2 in the capacity that it works for me, I’m just not working directly with Fuji anymore.
      If we ever do get the chance to sit down together, the first 5 are on me 😉
      Cheers
      -Nate

      You forgot to add to your statement 'to use Fuji gear' the word "exclusively." Or you are allowed to use other brands gear?

    • @kevin_mullins
      @kevin_mullins 5 років тому +2

      Yes, exclusively - except if there is no alternative. For example, I'll happily use a GoPro and happily use legacy medium format lenses where there is no Fujifilm alternative.
      I think that's a fair thing too and Nathan also said that he thinks that's reasonable for an ambassador.

    Thanks Nathan for your opinion and I understand your needs were never met by the product Fuji offers. After reading many of the comments, I feel a certain view of Fujifilm has been created, that is not the case in many other countries. Every country has their own Fujifilm head office. Sometimes smaller market countries may share a regional head office based in another country, but each has targets to make and to a large degree decide on their own way forward from a marketing perspective to reach those targets. As a Fujifilm X photographer myself, I was never asked to fulfill the requirements you were asked to do, I do not have any branding on my clothing, email, website, nothing. Of course I had to buy my gear, but that shows commitment to Fuji that as a photographer I do value their product and not just in it for free stuff and even if I wasn’t a x photographer, I’d be using it. I remember asking a senior guy at Fuji, what are the requirements? He said, use and enjoy the gear, as long as people see you producing great work with a camera you enjoy using, we are happy, don’t over sell, just use. And when I’ve made videos reviewing new Fuji gear, they never once asked me to refrain from saying anything negative. They believe if I address issues, people will see it as a fair critical view that can only benefit them. I believe I have always been in a 50/50 agreement with them. They occasionally ask me to do a presentation on any photography topic, pitch at events if I can and converse with other photographers. I get the opportunity to present my work, I’ve had the privilege of using cameras 2 to 3 months before being made public. Other then the gear I own, if I ever need a piece if gear I would seldom use or need to buy, like the 100-400, sure John, it’s our pleasure, enjoy. It’s a fair give and take. I believe I was the second photographer to be chosen in my country and today we are not represented by area in large numbers, but rather by someone senior in a particular photographic genre. I’ve met the most senior guys at Fujifilm, they are down to earth and really interested in our feedback, negative or positive.
    I understand if people think I’m shilling as they call it, but I’m just giving you my experience with Fuji. I’d say you had an issue with Fujifilm in your country and your values conflicted with their financial goals. I wish you all the best, thanks for sharing.

    Nathan thanks for your video... so, is there a link or contact in Fuji to "become" a Fuji Program photographer... I am an amateur photographer, dont live from it as a profession however I am interested into transitioning towards it... I'm the typical office executive that started taking shots in its spare time or work travels and started with a very entry level Canon DSLR, and with time came to collect 2 EOS bodies (5DmkIII & 7DmkII) plus about ten lenses..., however about a year ago I purchased a Fuji X-T2 with 3 fixed lenses and and the camera system is growing on me because its color rendition and also since it is compact is comfortable to carry it around, specially since I'm more inclined to take street or documentary style photography if you could say so... So well can you give any pointers on which is the way to apply for the program, I'd like to give it a try ! thanks bro

    Regarding Hot folder there is a way to add your grade when you shoot tethered:
    1)take first shot and apply grade sharpening camera profile whatever you want to get the image looking how you imagine for your client
    2)Save this as a user style, maybe give it the name of hte client/model/job etc
    3)Open the import menu (Capture One uses whatever your last import settings were when it imports from the hot folder) I think this is how i did it or it might be in preferences)
    4) Tell capture one to use your saved style as the import style
    5) All tethered shots from now on will show with your grade applied when they pop up. THis is a C1 technique not specfic to Fuji and so will work with any camera you are tethering via the hot folder method, its cludgy as if you make edits to your grade you will need to resave to the user sytle, tip just overwrite style with same name it will save you having to set it again as import style.
    Hope thats off some use and sorry its an incomplete description but you guys can work out the rest.
    Regaring X_H1 so much misinformation, its not the same size as a D800, its an X-T1 with a built in grip, if you ever used the X-T line with the non-battery grip the metal grip with baseplate, then thats basically what a X-h1 feels like, only with a better shutter placement and better AF ON location so it falls under your thumb for back focus. But hey its all good and I have always loved yourcontent, and one thing I have to thank Fuji X Programme for is bringing your work to my attention :)

    • @NathanElson
      @NathanElson  5 років тому

      Awesome, thanks for that tip!
      It would help as a work around, but agreed that having to re-save the style is a bit of a pain in the ass, but do-able.
      The other issue I run into is that when I am shooting for something like an apparel company, and we are creating file names for the photos that correspond with the pieces we are shooting, which are also being saved to folders with the same to stay organized, the hot folder method just doesn't work.
      Here's hoping that one day we won't have to try to use work arounds :)
      As for the XH-1, I was basically going off of what I had heard, but as I said, I have never held one so I don't have an opinion on it. I know I didn't like the feel of the XT series in terms of size, but maybe there is enough of a change to make a difference. I'll get my hands on one at some point to see.
      Cheers
      -Nate

      I've never used the D850. Still using my D800.
      Looking at the D850 myself or possibly switching to mirrorless (possibly Sony) when the time comes.
      Camera's are really just camera's, and if they feel good in your hand, and you like the files they produce, go for whatever floats your boat. No camera will make you better as a photographer :)

    what do X photographers get for being an X Photographer that makes it worth following a companies rules. the company is getting your input about there cameras, but what are you getting in return ? are they paying you ?. is it an actual job ? make me understand the relationship between the company and the photographer. because all you talked about is what they expected from you. so this video says why you are no longer a fuji x photographer. but I guess I am asking, why were you one in the first place ? please explain both sides of the relationship. thank you.

    • @NathanElson
      @NathanElson  5 років тому +24

      That was the thing, there wasn't a lot in return, which I was fine with when there wasn't such a demand for what I needed to provide. When the new requirements came into effect, I couldn't find the balance between what they wanted, and what they were offering in return. Combine that with the issues I set out in the video, and you have the reason for why I left the program.
      I did receive some compensation for some of the projects I worked on with them in the past, but outside of that I didn't get paid to be a part of the program. There was a lot of talk about the possibility of travel, but it never came to fruition.
      All in all, it's a program that will work for those who are already heavily invested in the Fuji X Series, but I wasn't that photographer.
      Cheers

    Honest and great video and I totally see and agree on the points about being an X-Photographer. Since cameras are just tools and Fujifilm works very well for what I shoot (portraits, art nude and landscapes) and I don't have any plans on ditching Fujifilm, I would still not want to be "forced" to use only one brand.

    I got the idea 💡 what you are saying. You want to go with Fujifilm than you go with Fujifilm or if you want Nikon than you go with Nikon. You don’t have to be pushed into something that you don’t want to do. My first digital camera is the Fujifilm X-T10 and it is working mostly great for me. Now for a few times and unknown reason I get a read error while skimming through the photos on my camera. Sometimes I do hit the wrong button because if the size of the camera is smaller than Nikon F5 and Nikon F100. But it is lightweight compared to my Nikons. I have been shooting Film SLRs for over fifteen years. I would stay with Nikon and Fujifilm because they have something to desire for. But my Nikons have better grip than my Fujifilm camera. I have tried the X-H1 and the grip is similar to a Nikon grip. The digital photos are great to look at with its depth of field and it separates the subjects in the photo from each other.

    Great video and very insightful. I've always wanted to be one of the X photographers as I felt like it's a testament of your skills and your ability to take advantage of the tools you're using as well as show what your tools are capable of achieving. But as you said, there's not much filtering that is happening in terms of who can be an X photographer.. though I am not in anyway a professional or a really good photographer.. I can tell what a good picture is and unfortunately I've seen some that made me question if that person deserves the title of being one of Xs? But again, it all boils down to business decisions..I just hope that they don't lose sight of what it actually means to be a brand ambassador. I still love my Fujis though.. it's just that I'm questioning now whether I should still pursue my dream of becoming one of the X.

    Wow, Nathan, you have educated me immensely on the ins and outs of being a Fujifilm X-Photographer! Being a landscape and product shooter using the X-Pro2 and some stellar Fujinon optics, I had also entertained the idea of being a Fujifilm X-Photographer, since Fuji gear is all I shoot, and the XF80mm f/2.8 Macro is the sharpest lens I've used in 40 years of photography! However, I don't do video, nor do I have a blog, other than my micro-stock site at totalqualityphoto.com. So, I don't think I would even "qualify" in Fuji's eyes, even though I highly tout their products to everyone I meet. That said, I can totally understand your point of view, and appreciate you sharing it here. Thanks again, sir. Regards, Steve

    Solid video. I completely agree with you about the XT series. I have an unnatural love for my X-Pro1, and while the X-Pro2 is faster, the images don’t have the same special sauce (at least for me). Olympus sent me an EM1 ii for a month and I absolutely loved it. IQ was on par with the XT2, especially at 6400 and below, but the handling was night and day better on the Oly than the XT.

    I think any brand wanting their ambassadors loyalty to shoot just their brand range of equipment is... frankly... insulting. If you want the best photographers to represent and showcase what that brands camera can do then don't stifle their art! Cameras are just tools! It's a ridiculous ultimatum to put to a talented artist to force them to sell these brushes so that you can be showcased when you use their brush... lolwot? What happens when you get an itch for shooting some large format or want to play with the Pentax 67? What... you gotta put on a fake disguise when you go out and do that for fear of being caught! How ridiculous...

    Other than the gear support and their name, I don't know what type of advantages you could obtain by being a Fuji X shooter but if it doesn't make you feel right, what you did is a right thing - you have your own successful business, no need to have someone being behind the scene. Now I have started wondering about stories the other Fiji shooters I like, as Kevin Mullins, have after I heard about this!

    Thanks Nathan for the video. I have few questions you may or may not not know the answer to. 1 Do you know, or believe, that other brands have same requirements, meaning Canon and Nikon and Sony "explorers of light", "ambassadors", "artisans of Light", etc, etc, require that their 'photographers' use their gear exclusively? 2. How do these Brands monitor 'exclusive use.'? Do they follow you to weddings and shoots to see what you shoot there? Do they have an exclusive rights to check your computer every week to see if you'd used another brand's camera. I also think it is a silly requirement because it does not allow you to compare and contrast gear from different brands with your brand, and help people with informed choices. 3 How much was the discount on Fuji gear that you would have received? Was it 50% or more, just wondering. Thanks

    • @NathanElson
      @NathanElson  5 років тому +1

      To answer as best as I can:
      1) I have no idea what the requirements are for other companies, but it's not unreasonable to say that they would have to use the companies gear 99% of the time.
      2) They follow along with your social media, and they can see what you're using. It's typically pretty obvious. It's more about what the general public see's you using seeing as your supposed to be representing a certain brand.
      3) Discounts varied.

    Hey Nathan, I'm a Sony (a7iv's )shooter but I've always loved Fuji. So I went out and got the XT-3 and kit lens to see if I like it. And so far, I love it, it isn't the best camera for wedding film making but I think it will work out. if it works out, I will probably get the H2s and some fast primes.
    OK, so five years later have you gone back to Fuji with some of their incredible new cameras?

      I've been a Fujifilm user XH-2 and X-T5 but for client jobs they were a huge letdown, firmware all but ruined my experience with the XH-2 during 2 shoots the camera froze, I got rid of it straight away.
      The X-T5 ergonomics were terrible and the eye AF unreliable.
      There is a reason most working photogs use Canon, Sony, and Nikon.
      Fujifilm for me is more hype than substance.

    Thx for video it is good to know how it works. For me programs like these are at least transparent- everybody knows that opinions are biased. In many cases they are brand lovers, everything is ok.
    I have a small problem with channels which are "in relation" with companies without description, with content mostly tutorial based but mixed with misleading opinions about competition. I don't want to attack anyone by mentioning channel names, but I hope that UA-cam will start checking content creators for this.

    I like Fuji since day one I used it (S2pro, delivered shockingly beautiful photos at that time) and currently shoot only Fuji X. Basically their weak side in the old days of the S2pro - S5pro was marketing. Now every brand has their influencers, and some of the Fuji videos are really well made. Specially when the guys just talk about their passion, not so much the camera. The problem seems to be that not all X photographers seem to be treated equally. Bad thing. As Nathan said, the balance between receiving and investing must be respected.
    I believe Fuji when they say - as a company - that there is a passion about photography that drives them. But they have to be careful not to put marketing over everything else. Although of course I understand that it is an extremely competitive market, and that they are a relatively small brand.

    A little late to the party watching this but have to agree, in every aspect. I love my X-T3's, but they have a purpose, They are fun to use and have wonderful color science. Being a studio portrait photographer, I still lean on my A7r3's for my bread and butter. More robust, DR, and all around more well rounded. Like I said, love the X series, but they seve a purpose, not my profession. Good explanation Nate.

      I was using Fuji as a personal camera (XPro1) and Fuji reached out to me to ask me if I wanted to be a part of their X Photographer program. Sounded like fun so I jumped on board and for a couple of years it was a good fit, then as all things do, the program changed so I left. Nothing to do with a favourite camera, because honestly the Xpro2 is still my favourite camera to date, just more to do with my professional needs and what Fuji had on the table at the time. They’ve made some significant leaps with the MF system, and that’s something I may look at in the near future.

      Get to use the new gears before public release, usually by showing your followers how the greatest and latest improve your works. The key here is “followers”. You’ll be one of the marketing channels that generates “noise” for them for free. There are photographers invited to be x-photographers just because they have lots of followers on social media, not because they are great photographers.
