    I got a chuckle out of this. I started learning guitar in 1959 with a copy of the Nick Manoloff Guitar Method Book 1. It came with a cardstock chord wheel, about 10 inches across, similar to the one you demonstrate here. I had never seen another one like it since. I sure wish I still had that book and chord wheel because I could still learn a lot more from it. Also Books 2 & 3 in the series.

    I think the genius in this is what it doesn't show. I've used circle of fifths charts before, but there's so much noise with all the other notes and chords there next to what I want, it's not all that intuitive or helpful. This blocks all that out so I have what's relevant, and only that. Very cool, I'll be ordering one!

    • @thenoisyclan
      @thenoisyclan 11 місяців тому

      Yes, exactly!! There is nothing worse than staring at a circle of fifths cart with all the extra noise of other keys you don't want to focus on... we thought it was about time it got easier!

    I think I 'sort of' agree with you Sean. I don't 'teach' guitar, but I have 'coached' a few folks from being a player to playing in a band. To your point here, knowing the 1, 6m, 4, 5 in C,A,G,E,D is a must know. What seemed to work best was finding a song, usually 60's or 70's, that used the famous 1, 6m, 4, 5. Playing that enough times so they refer to the chords in numeric and not letters. Then transpose it from C to A, to G and so on. People get confused between the chord and position of the chord in the song because they are the same name. So we would only say the key once, then refer to the chord by number. When they understand that everything else seems to click. Then use the tool for reference? If that makes any sense?? Just some thoughts... 8) --gary PS; I know I left out B and F, that was just to simplify it. 8)

  • @tuna22lm
    @tuna22lm 11 місяців тому

    I think that it would sound different if you played the chords in different orders each time, like if you played say A,G,Em,D would sound different if you played Em,A,D,G. Every time you mix it up it would sound different even though it is the same chords I think. It's a pretty cool and handy looking chord/chart wheel in my opinion.

    Sean, have you ever crossed paths with Mr. Beato?
    You guys would be fun to watch together....

    Pretty cool but I think I’d use it as a crutch instead of just learning it in my head. I do like that it shows “close enough” chords

    The circle of fifths is super important for contemporary pop music. It's a very basic and strict set of rules. I learned all of this early on in my career but I realized that this theory system is limited and applies mostly to modern pop music.

      Well, I mean, in german we would not even put this under "music theory", we literally call it "common music knowledge". Apart from that, music theory also looks at other things than pitch, for example rhythm/meter, timbre, form... But hey, if that thing helps people to get into it, why not?

    Huh, so basically, any key your in, go back or foward 2 notes in the CoF, like in D, go back 2 and you get C and forward 2 you get E, but something like the key of E you could use a D Major or an F# Major chord?

    • @stevec9972
      @stevec9972 11 місяців тому

      Yes, from my understanding, not really diatonic to the key.
      They might call it an out of key chord
      Chord substitution or borrowed chord, from another key

    This item looks really useful. I've struggled with music theory and I see how this could help me a lot.
    That said, the maker's website is confusing. Before I add the item to my cart it shows $26.99 but when I look in the cart it is showing in GBP. After discount in USD it is $21.59 but it is actually $27.42 after you convert it from GBP. Then there is shipping costs, which I expect to pay. I hope they get their site sorted out so I know what the actual price is.

      @@seandaniel23 Thanks for letting them know. I messaged them as well, I wasn't sure if you'd see my message, and they replied to me very quickly. I checked out their site and it does appear they have the currency issue sorted out. Thanks again!

    I actually prefer “the chord wheel” by Jim Fleser. Similar but a bit easier for me.
