Having owned RAV4's and VW's over the years I favour the VW for sophistication and a car that's just as much at home in the supermarket car park or the driveway of a flash hotel.

Love the review, showed all the good and the neutral parts of the Tiguan. Not too fancy like the Tucson or as adventurous type as the RAV4 but I'd prefer this over any of those two because of two things: versatility and user-friendly cabin.

Tiguan over the Tucson or RAV4 sure I agree with you looks far better than those boring Asian SUVs drives , Handling, braking. comfort, performance far superior .Until the warranty runs out or U need to dispose of it 7y later as the used car public prefer those boring RAV4 , Tuscon and tend to not even consider those exciting German engineered SUV hence resale goes like a brick droped from a window

My go-to channel for car reviews. I’m driving the previous range Tiguan in the base spec (called Trendline in South Africa) and it’s a decent car. I really hope that VW have fine tuned the DSG box as the car is jerky during takeoff. Looking forward to test driving the newly updated one.

As a driver it hunts around never happy in a straight line, steering wheel looks good but its a terrible sectional shape meaning its uncomfortable to hold, the arm rests are at knee height so you "hang" from the wheel, lane assist is off now because it tried so steer me into an oncoming bus, false crash alarms whilst in tunnels and nobody around. Suspension far too hard, its not a sports car, why try? It results in giving uncomfortable ride quality. Hands-free tailgate is hopeless, DSG is jerky in some situations. The speedo is literally 4 x shown - no joke, only 3x shown with the HUD turned off - but the fuel guage is hard to read with a 2mm long tv needle
The whole design is compromised by skinny and wide wheel packs, short and long wheel base models.

Nice review Paul. Being a CX-5 GT owner and past Tiguan owner, I was very interested to see what Toyota would bring in the new RAV4. I still feel the CX-5 is the most luxurious, but the Kodiaq (I know it’s a 7 seater) and Tiguan are not far behind. Compared to them, RAV4 and Forrester are quite agricultural in styling. The 2.5 Turbo Mazda is a gem of a motor in the CX-5 and the main reason I bought it. The VW group make great cars, but for me dieselgate and their price point are too much to ignore. Lloyd

You have a finite number of screens so if you have it on one, surely you’d want other info on the other one? Just saying. And you can swap it from one to the other so....

But the reliability issues I am reading about the Tiguan is of concern too. I guess I will decide after I get to test drive the 132TSI.

I have the 2020 cruiser hybrid all wheel drive - comparing it the 132TSI the cruiser has slightly better performance, better fuel economy, cheaper to service and in my opinion a better looking SUV just wish it had the drivers digital cluster like the Tiguan (if you go for the lux package) and would have liked a heads up display but a small compromise for a already impressive package.

Some time ago, you tested the rigidity of medium SUVs and uncovered that the Tiguan was one of the few that exhibited some flex.
So much so that the driver’s door didn’t close (or open) properly. Wonder if this has been addressed.

I got one of these new 110 Tiguans as a loaner this week while the dealer serviced my GTI.
I didn’t know there was a Sport Mode on the DSG, but I found the Normal mode quite annoying. The DSG would up-shift waaay too early, so when I gave it a bit more throttle, it never had any torque immediately available. From stand-still, the throttle has a big dead-zone before the car moves away, and together with tending to be two gears too high, I found myself having to unnecessarily modulate the throttle back and forth to maintain the speed that I want, which I don’t have to on my manual GTI.
You can tell I’m not a big fan of DSG. I might buy an automatic car next time, but if so, it will be a conventional torque converter rather than DSG or CVT.
In one instance driving the Tiguan, on changing lanes, the steering wheel tugged a bit the other way. I had it confirmed later by the Service coordinator that it was the Lane Keep Assist kicking in. Not a big fan of the car doing that. I didn’t enjoy the sensation of the car fighting what I was deliberately trying to do. If I had a car with this feature, I’d switch that off for sure.

Before you decide to buy a Tiguan or VW car, read my below case.
I am living in New Zealand. A few weeks ago, my VW Tiguan broke down in the car park of Countdown supermarket. I called the Roadside Assist and told them about my situation. The technician told me that my car must be towed back to the garage for repair. You might think that my above experience is nothing special. But what is shocking is that this is the sixth time my car needs repairs in the past four years. The car was really good at first. But from the middle of the first year, problem started. The faults are rear windscreen wiper, a key, reversing camera, car computer, rear LED light and engine malfunction. My car is the latest model at year 2017, and only travelled 22K at this moment. Fortunately, all repair costs are covered by 5-year warranty (I paid the cost of last two year extension). But now, I am worrying about what will happen in the 6th and 7th year after the five-year warranty expires.
I complained to Volkswagen New Zealand about the quality and reliability of the car. Their answers made me even more angry. They basically told me that all malfunctions have been repaired within the warranty period. Therefore, they are not responsible for any losses caused to customers due to poor car quality. In the past 4 years, I have not only lost time to send the car for repair. I also lost many days of using the car and had to bear the travelling cost because they didn't provide courtesy car. And even have to endure mental pressure. So is it too demanding for problem free when buying a new car?
Talking about follow-up developments. After I tried to complaint to VW Europe and Australia thru e-mail. The customer manager Carolina Zalazar of VW NZ contacted me again and gave me a meaningless offer, which is two years Roadside Assist and $200 voucher for next service, instead of two years of warranty. Should she know what I am worrying is the maintenance cost?
I asked them to buy back or trade in my car at the current market price. She forwarded the case to the car dealer Tristram European, and asked me to contact the dealer directly. But the dealer rejected me because VW NZ will not compensate them anything.
Eventually, I received a deal seems to reply in good faith.
“You will need to advise the dealer if you are interested in a new Tiguan or which model and then we can organise a special price for a new vehicle if that was the case.”
Try it, I pick three models and see what the price is.
    1. Golf 8
    2. T-Roc
    3. T-Cross R Type
Received a call from Tristram European for following price.
    1. Golf 8, New model, no discount
    2. T-Roc,No car can offer you
    3. T-Cross R Type,Only this model can less $1500 from $45,500 RRP.
Is it a ridiculous special price?
Before Tiguan, I had owned a Toyota Highlander for 7 years. I just need to perform regular services and the car never has a problem. So if a brand new VW car needs to be returned for six repairs in four years, is the quality acceptable? Can I say VW sold me a defective car? Is it reasonable if I ask VW to buy my car back at current market price, or at least extend warranty period two years, rather than meaningless Roadside Assist?

If you choose the basic navigation system (Discover Media) than you can have the navigation only on one of the two displays at the same time. If you choose the more expensive navigation system (Discover Pro) than you can have the navigation on both displays simultaneously.

So very similar to Skoda Karoq which I have purchased in 2019 in Melbourne for just 28K drive away (base model), Tiguan is just about couple of thousands more expensive only because the W batch on the front grill otherwise I can't see any significant difference. By the way I have Karoq with the new 1.5 TSI 110kw engine which is much more refined and efficient. (6.5/7L/100km)

Tiguan boot is 520 L with the rear seats pushed back fully, you can sacrifice some legroom in the rear, pull the seats forward a bit and you 615L. Regardless exterior vehicle size does not always translate to a more interior volume. VW has always been the leader in ergonomics and practicality in this segment.

You might find it has those extra features because it has the "luxury pack" added on. It's a $5k option. That's the funny thing about euro cars - the advertised price seems enticing but by the time you add things on such as the option packs the price gets up there.
