- The candidates running for San Diego mayor will join KPBS for a live debate on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and challenger Larry Turner will debate the most pressing issues facing San Diegans including housing and homelessness, public safety, and money matters.
This live debate will be moderated by KPBS Public Matters investigative reporter Amita Sharma along with panelists Scott Lewis, CEO and editor-in-chief of Voice of San Diego; Jamie Self, managing editor of inewsource; and Andrew Bowen, metro reporter for KPBS.
The live debate will be carried on KPBS TV, 89.5 FM, kpbs.org, and UA-cam.
Todd Gloria claims he was raised to leave things better than he found it.
San Diego is worse now than before he became mayor.
He does not deserve re-election.

Congratulations to the other 800+ people that watched this live with me and congrats to everyone else who is now seeing this. You truly care about our city. But the question is how are we going to fix it? Any ideas?
Don't criminalize homelessness. A homeless person goes into jail homeless and comes out homeless. Also if they have a job and go to jail they often lose it. It's not helping and only a very temporary solution.

@@CopleyCadet It shouldn't be criminalized but there needs to be accountability. We all have rules we need to live by that we don't like.
SROs, Single Room Occupancy. We need WAY more of this. Both candidates mentions solid root causes of our housing issues. Sadly they didn't say that both causes exist as issues. We need more capacity especially in the lower tiers. We need a way to stop out of the area investors from buying and exploiting properties. There are some others. This idea of one solution is silly, the problem is complex and the root causes are plural, the solution has to be as well.

Remember when the Federal Rail Administration contacted Todd Gloria for a year because he let the maintenance of the rail crossings fail, and Gloria's office ignored them and so they had to start blowing their horns 24 hours per day downtown? LOL. That was awful!

Gloria claims to have counted 800 homeless in Downtown. I work for Downtown San Diego Partnership(DSDP) and I make contact with about 400 of them just on C street and Gaslamp. Not factoring in Tailgate(12 and Imperial). As someone whos job it is to nake contact with these individuals; There are still over 2000 homeless people throughout Downtown

I guess it's easy to criticize any individual who has spent 4 years in office and those 4 years haven't been, um, great for San Diego.
Turner may not have the political experience (which seems to be the main criticism of his campaign), but his approach seems sensible. Credible. Do-able.
Maybe it will work. Maybe it won't. But what's currently in place hasn't moved the needle towards better answers to homelessness, affordable housing, or a sense of San Diego working well as a city.

Todd Gloria LIED when he said the cyclist fatality wasn’t on a street with a bike lane. Go to google maps and look it up, it’s a shared bike lane!! Todd Gloria is a career politician and a career LIAR.
how would we know the address or what was there? Neither the debate nor you gave us that info. Not saying you're wrong, but I don't have the info to do what you say. Where can I see a report with the accident address?

@@miloshapiro the accident happened on congress street in old town. Google map it and look at the street, It’s a shared street/bike lane. Todd Gloria administration didn’t fund that bike lane as far as I know (it looks quite old), but the point is that it is a shared bike lane and emphasizes Turners point that they are not safely built and neither are the new ones Gloria is advocating for. It’s shameful that Gloria had to lie about this instead of being honest with the voters.
He sold out the city for $7.5 million over 30 years on 101 Ash ($200 million + factoring interest) & is asking tax payers now to bail his administration out by increasing sales taxes to replace the funds he’s used irresponsibly. IMO 101 Ash is the line in the sand to never re-elect Todd Gloria.
@@prgngbaseball1 thanks for that info. I don't know that it's fair to blame Todd for old "shared bike lanes" which, to me, aren't bike lanes at all and I don't know why we call them that. The issue I have is that we're giving up driving lanes to create bike-only lanes, which do seem safer but serve so few compared to the traffic they create while mostly sitting empty. The notion that, in a hilly city, that people are going to be biking instead of driving seems pie in the sky. All of that said, Turner didn't really give me confidence. It was a lot of idealism and blame, but I got very little that helped me understand what he'd actually do. Saying he'd bring community leaders together sounds nice, but vague and doesn't show that Gloria didn't try to do that. I went in HOPING to feel like Turner was an answer and didn't leave watching feeling that way. But that's just me and I wouldn't fault someone either way on this one for what they were choosing.
@@miloshapiro I didn’t blame Gloria, and that’s very clear. The point I made is that they are not safe, even the new ones that Gloria is advocating for which is true. Additionally, he’s spending city funds on something as you point out, are insignificant and not widely used - it’s just a talking point. In addition to irresponsibly spending city funds through his entire first term. Does 101 Ash not matter to you? Does 101 Ash not immediately disqualify Gloria? $200+ million in loans on a building he knew could not be used, and put the debt on the tax payers for the next 30 years.

Many ADUs are Airbnbs. There are over 6000 Airbnbs in san diego, they don't go into the pool of low cost housing.
Right, adus have just became a way for developers to make more income. There's a "single family home" property in la mesa that's basically been turned into an apartment complex with 5+ different adus on it. All of them are 2 bedroom and cost 2.7k a month. The previous home on that property before the new adus was only going for 3k a month. These developers have basically multiplied their income by 10.

Now he wants the city to pay $200 Million in loans over 30 YEARS for an unusable building, diverting MILLIONS from emergency funds that could have been used for critical infrastructure.. now he’s begging for millions more in sales tax. Again, NOTHING to do with Kamala or any other politician, republican or democrat. Gloria is a scumbag, we all can agree on that. Don’t distract from the issue at hand by drawing false equivalency with zero factual basis.

Silly remark about Larry being against trees. He was speaking about trees growing in a drainage channel that blocked flows and caused massive flooding which were not removed. Do some research prior to posting.

Independent here voting Trump and down ticket RED this cycle with the exception of Todd Gloria. Gloria won both debates. He is thinking long term while fixing today's issues. I did not vote for him last time but I am this cycle. The only democrat that is worth his salt in CA. I do agree with larry about safe bike lanes but that takes money! That is infrastructure spending to redesign the roads to make walking and biking safer when it is not today. Larry didn't offer solutions for paying for his ideas

I am not going to pay higher tax so Gloria can continue to spend it poorly. Paying $3.25million for a three flight stair in Point Loma for example.
