One thing I wasn't able to test was is if a nearby Steelhead explosion would take out a flyfish.
Lemme know if you know because I don't know, but I don't think so
From the one year of playing salmon run, I don't think it's possible to kill a flyfish with a steelhead explosion

It does actually! Had that happen just today but I think the lids need to be open and since both bosses are on a cycle the odds on that happening are fairly low

The first "1000 kills" badge that I got was the flyfish badge, and I think that really says all it needs to about freelance. If a flyfish pops up, you have to be the one to try and take it out, because wow 80% of the time, no one else will ever bother.
it surprises me how others dont even care about taking out the flyfish first since it can get overwhelming real quick when its not taken care of
Not to mention, the flyfish can make your own teammates a hazard because they’ll track missiles to other players, possibly killing somebody that wasn’t even being aimed for
The thing stingers and flyfish have in common is if more than 1 of them on the map it results to a wipe

Extra tip, if you’re alone and you find yourself in front of a Fly Fish and need to, no *must* , take it down, target the red one, the basket on the right, first. The one on the left (blue) targets a random player and the one on the right (red) targets the closet player to it, which, is going to be you. By targeting the one on the right first, this allows you to regenerate ink to throw a second bomb without having to do gymnastics avoiding missiles.
That no longer applies in Splatoon 3. It will always target the closest player now.

ADDITIONAL (advanced) TIPS
You can one shot the flyfish with one bomb if you roll it nearby it at a ledge at even height, but this is only if
A: the flyfish is facing the ledge
B: the bomb is close enough
C: the baskets are open
You may want to practice rolling your bombs for more consistency.
Also, you can take it out in one shot if you aim at the bottom middle of the lids as they open, not into the baskets themselves. Marked with the periods.

Bear in mind, this only works generously with explosher shots, crab tank shots, Missile shots, and inkjet shots
egg throws are risky to use in this tactic it’s possible, but it is not recommended as you could potentially miss and waste an egg better suited for taking out a basket reliably.

Cool thing about the ink jet. If you aim correctly in the middle you can kill a flyfish with just one shot instead of aiming for both baskets individually.
Same with crab tank, exslosher, golden eggs and the canons
Only annoying part is the angle in shooting it often collides with something else and the shot doesn't count a single shot. I've tried it multiple times and I just decided that it wasn't consistent enough to use it.
Keep in mind those suckers always move and you're on a limited time to make every shot count. It's worth hitting one basket than having it backfire later.
Slammin' lid tip: while flyfish might not reliably fly under lids, if you see one pretty close to a lid, throwing your bomb at the lid shield at the right angle can also destroy at least one basket.
Ive gotten it to destroy 2 most times. Its an easy method, shame its kind of situational
i've had a bomb explode in the middle of the flyfish because a slammin lid was right next to it, which took it out completely. only had that happen once though, during the big run.
Some additional anti-flyfish information:
-while it is true that flyfish baskets have different targeting, this only applies per cycle. If you destroy one basket and leave the other, regardless of which one you left alive, the remaining basket will always target the closest player on the next cycle. Which basket you destroy only matters if you can do so before the missiles are fired for that cycle.
-both killer wail 5.1 and triple inkstrike follow the rule of threes. Wail has six beams, but they lock on two at a time to make three sets of two. One set of killer wails or one inkstrike is enough to destroy a flyfish, meaning one activation of either of these can bring down three flyfish (and/or stingers). Just keep in mind that a single pair of killer wails can fail to destroy a flyfish if it’s on the move.
-I’ve heard some players claim that it’s possible to run over a flyfish directly with a reefslider. Can’t confirm whether or not this is true myself, though.
-and finally, the advanced flyfish one-shot techniques. There are a few of these and you’ve probably seen other comments mentioning them if you didn’t already know about them. In general, firing an explosive at the bottom center of the open baskets can destroy both at once. The easiest method is with the low tide cannons (bonus: these can also one shot fish sticks before they deploy). You can also do this with inkjet and crab tank quite reliably, and it’s possible with a lot more precision using explosher and the egg cannon. It’s also possible to do this by preemptively detonating a bomb. This can be done by rolling the bomb to detonate on a ledge at the same height as the open baskets, which is most commonly possible on the grated walkways on spawning grounds. It can even be done off of a slammin’ lid if you’re lucky enough to have them line up. You can also cause a bomb to detonate midair by throwing it against a steel eel or slammin’ lid barrier. And, if you’re *really* cool, you can work with a downed teammate to destroy a flyfish by detonating a bomb on their midair life ring. This is not practical or recommended in any realistic setting. It’s badass, though.
Quite reliably? Dude they move constantly and sometimes the shot backfires due to the hitbox. If you mean hugging them super close, then maybe. I've probably done hundreds of runs and that one shot strategy with Inkjet feels off at times. I know I'm aiming my shots, but something magically gets caught and it doesn't count the other basket's destruction.

It's all fun and games until all 4 people rush over to throw 4 bombs in the left flyfish basket and then get blown up by missiles since they all brought the missiles to the same spot. I love freelance.

3:38 not sure if anyone has pointed this out already, but 1 egg can actually destroy both buckets at the same time if you aim it right in the middle. it will connect with both at the same time and destroy the whole flyfish. (this also works with explosher globs, inkjet shots and crab tank globs.) another side note is since the patch that sped up its tracking, you only need 1 killer wail target to kill a flyfish, meaning you can kill multiple flyfish or stingers from across the map with one wail!
I would like to point out that Killer Whale is very effective at taking out multiple bosses at once, or at least damaging multiple bosses at once; you just aim the whale at one boss and once it’s locked and that boss, you turn in multiple directions to spread the whale out. When properly used, the Whale is actually one of the best specials in the SR. Also, if you ever notice tons of Fly Fish bins, that means someone one your team has INK JET… USE IT TO TAKE OUT THE FLY FISH. Thanks for the video! :)

You know, you can take out both flyfish missile launchers at the same time with the crab tank and with a golden egg

For crab tank, you can hold down the trigger and press the bomb button so you fire a couple of shots between each bomb and still get the same number of bombs
Kinda touched on in the video, but the red cooler on the flyfish (right as you face it) locks onto the closest player, while the blue cooler (left as you face it) locks onto a random player. if taking out a flyfish solo, it's better to aim for the right (red) cooler first so you can throw the second bomb into the other cooler without having to worry about missiles.

Max of 3 of the same boss can spawn at the same time, not 4. The reason why you’d only want 3 crippled flyfish instead is so that you’d get more lurable bosses. Also after the 28 second mark feel free to kill any flyfish without worry of more spawning.

I'm pretty sure that if you aim it perfectly at where the baskets are closest together, Crab Globs, Inkjet Shots, and Explo Globs can 1-Shot a Flyfish. I could be wrong though.

If a fly fish is close enough to a ledge, if you position a bomb just right, the blast radius is enough to take it out at once! You can practice in the tutorial.

i wish there was a bit of suction when the baskets open up. it's always infuriating when you throw a bomb directly at it but it rolls onto the top part and does nothing
Flyfish will got buffed in Splatoon 3. Now when they hit you, a communication error occurs.
Bonus tip; probably the best way of solo dealing with/leaving flyfish is to break the right basket (the red one) which targets multiple people, it makes it much more manageable for the team while you or your team can go back for it later when theres less enemies or you got your quota.
Also if you have egg cannons or crab tank, you can aim in the middle of the baskets to break both of them at once (it's a bit techy)
Pro-Tip, there are no Fly fish in Anarchy and Turfwars, you don't have to fight them if they never show up >:D
I hate Flyfish.
But I enjoy killing Flyfish so that there's no more Flyfish.

Outside of missing one hit methods, and that shark can ride over flyfish. It covers basically everything else
I'm sure someone else here commented this, but you can actually kill a flyfish with only 1 shot with explosher, inkjet, crab tank, cohozuna gold egg, and cannon. You have to aim just in between the the launchers toward the covers of the launcher (so the top center of the flyfish when it's open.)
This is SUPER helpful, especially during cohozuna waves!

Kraken can jump into the flyfish pilot for a 2-shot or charge into the pilot at an equal height for a 1-shot, and Triple Splashdown can destroy flyfish as long as the baskets are open, even if it only in range of one fist or isn’t even facing you
Remember: It is always morally and ethically acceptable to destroy a flyfish.
one thing i found out a few days ago is that if a flyfish is right next to a slammin' lid, throwing a bomb at the lid's shield will detonate the bomb instantly, and the proximity will still destroy the basket, this means you don't have to wait for the bomb to explode, possibly cancelling the tentamissles
So now there's no excuses for my team right?

These guys break the rules that every other Salmonid established, which is that they have a strength and a weakness, that other salmonids are supposed to cover, for example: Steelheads require you to target slightly upwards, but Maws punish you for not paying attention to your surroundings. But Flyfish are the strength and the weakness AND the other strength the covers the weakness.
One of the worst parts is even if you know there’s a Flyfish you sometimes can’t get to it

Funny thing but by complete luck I found out that by splatting a steel head next to a fly fish while open, the explosion can take out one or both baskets. It is just as situational as using the torpedo of a drizzled to take a basket out, but it is a way

As you run around the Egg Basket with your buddy, trying to avoid a Steel Eel after each of you, a Scrapper chasing you down, and a Steelhead just coming up the hill lobbing bombs at you; your Teammate off in the corner is spamming "Help!" as they went too far and got overwhelmed; and suddenly a Drizzler makes it rain and a Stinger is trying to pick off your buddy. You just manage to take out the Steel Eel on him and he then takes out the Scrapper, but all of a sudden four missal volleys start to rain down on the two of you and just as you get out of the way, you go down to a Big Shot that decided to join the fun...

They should give us the option to swap between bombs like in the hero modes and give flyfish baskets set hp (so if they add fizzy or so to the bomb roster you can’t just throw a non-charged fizzy)
A slammin lid falling from death will deal enough damage to kill a flyfish under it, useful if you can't get under it in time
Flyfishes just take up way too much of your attention compared to the other bosses, I think they should only need ONE box, and it would be more manageable. Especially with the fact that they have tenta missiles

Idk if u already know this but flyfish and most salmon bosses are powered by the gold eggs it mentions in splatoon 2 the octarians and salmon made a deal the octarians get the orange eggs or whatever to power their wepons or something and the salmon get machines to protect their eggs

I’m so glad they buffed the triple inkstrike’s damage by 20%. Before that patch, you needed two strikes out of your three to take out a full health flyfish.
You forgot that Flyfishes also piss on you if you're directly beneath them. Probably the biggest Vine boom of them all tbh.
More tips: all th bomb specials explosher, and eggs, you ca actually one shot it if u aim at the middle of the basket betwee its small gap, instant kill. Also if youre taking care of them solo, prioritize blue basket first. Itll make dodging missiles easier for everyone, no matter how many spawn.

something you missed: if you aim between the two baskets you can take both out at the same time! this works for all methods you mentioned ^_^
also, leaving right basket is a common strat not just in HLM

on Cohock waves, the cannons work VERY well agains the fly fish, as long as the cooler-trash dumpster things are open. that way, you can easily toss the fly fish into the dumpster!

I'm in the leave em with one basket camp. Having to deal with them rotating in and spawning in hard to access places is painful when you're also managing things like Big Shots and Stingers. With one basket, even if there's 4, it's still easier to avoid than full power rotating ones.

Wait! I’ve been playing Salmon Run for nearly five years, and I never knew the flyfish basket lids had different colors. I guess it’s just the dark visual atmosphere that have made it look monochromatic to me.
The government doesn't tell you this but you can take the fish out of the fly fish, they are free, I have 67 veteran flying fish in my house

I think you missed the extremely rare "knocking a drizzler torpedo into the open basket" tech
3:29 Both Slammin Lid's shield and Steel Eel's wall body can remove a missile launcher or, in better cases, just wipe out the fly fish. Jist allign yourself so the bomb's splash damage can hit the missile launchers, and you *should* be good.
Also, sometimes, it may be better to only have one basket remaining. The game only allows three of one type of boss salmonid at a time.
Current Salmon run has Grizzco slosher. Can confirm it'll wipe out fly fish by shooting them right in the face. It's so satisfying.
I notice that specifically on high tide, drizzlers kill me almost every wrap
