PatrickDAllen1 If you are referring to 'overtone singing' I believe you are not correct. overtones are usually much higher pitch than the root, and it takes quite some overtones to get to the interval she sings the last. I may be wrong. :) good music nevertheless
Filip Korošec I took a class on Southeast Asian music and we talked about overtone singing in regards to Tuvan Throat Singing. The overtones produced can be all over the spectrum, so it is a similar technique
There's actually a monk that performs with Bela Fleck and they sing like this all the time. His name is Ondar Kongar-ol. It's call Throat Singing. Check out 1:29 on this video ua-cam.com/video/FXPR-n9_OM8/v-deo.html
Tom Waits had a video several years back where he had a similar vocal technique. I don't remember the song, but I believe it was a B&W video, on MTV or VH1.
David Lee Roth in his younger days could sing multiple octaves.. not as prominent, however in the song "Somebody get me a doctor".. he does it a lot... check it out:: No disrespect to Lalah Hathaway, SHE"S AWESOME!! ,, there's only a handful of people in this world that can do that and DLR was one of them..
What I love about Snarky Puppy comments is that it's refreshing to see that the world doesn't merely consist of trolls, faceless cowards, and evil souls. You can regain not only your hope in music but also in humanity.

Folks don’t forget the incredible singer/songwriter Brenda Russell who originally sang and wrote this song (and Snarky/Lalah put this ill arrangement on it). Brenda Russell also wrote “Get Here” (made popular by Oleta Adams) and “Piano in the Dark”. Much respect!

Shoutout to the organ player for keeping it together when everyone else died at the same time. EDIT: his name is Cory Henry. Thank you everyone, especially for the 1K likes!!
Man, it pisses me off when people with good taste in music completely disregard other types of music because it's "fake studio music." Now, it's hard to know exactly what you mean by that, because it's completely vague, but I have an idea. Stuff like mainstream pop, rap, hip-hop, and R&B can be truly amazing music. Also, even stuff like Miley Cyrus can be fun. While most certainly not incredibly talented, she has still managed to pump out super fun catchy songs like Party in the USA. Please, for the sake of your own music taste, please reconsider the way you evaluate music.
Two things: I wouldn't quite consider myself a "grown ass man" considering I'm only 16, but how is my name relevant even slightly. Second thing is, I didn't even give you any advise. Also, go back to school?
Best live jazz vocal performance of the last 20 years.... Incredible band and back up harmonies.....Thank you for all you do for culture !! INSPIRATIONNNNNN!!!!
This is sort off what I could find out about the chords she sings. 6:13 Ab min/Eb 6:15 Bb min/F 6:20 Eb min/Bb 6:25 A (sus)2 But every time I think I hear more notes coming out. Probably also because she uses these beautiful glissandos getting into the chords. Love the reaction of the band! 😱😃
Wow. I have never heard another human do that. I got chills when she sang two notes at the same time. That had to of been a mile stone in the development of music history
I been trying today to figure out how to do what she did at 6:24 or so but alas she's a freak of nature. No like frfr. Found out through TERRELL that she was born with some weird vocal cord discrepancy that ended up being a blessing to us all. Ain't that how God always works. Never underestimate the power of your uniqueness. She got me round here preaching.
Christian Nicholas she sings two and three notes at once by herself with polyphonic singing. It's a 'trick' even less common and more difficult than mastering whistle tones or overtones.
Marcus Sewell She hasn't split her voice, but has instead found a way to make her overtones more prominent as to be heard through the main tone as well. We all have them, but Lalah has managed to make it heard. A feat few have ever accomplished.
She put that last split on those chords like, "for all ya'll thinking you're not hearing what you just heard - TAKE THAT!". This is my bestie in my head. Spiritual Experience!
Ok, so it actually sounds like Lala Hathaway is singing two individual notes at one time - like her vocal chords are vibrating in two places producing two separate notes. This is actually NOT overtone singing like you'll hear with Anna-Maria Hefele. Overtone singing is actually easier to do than what Lala Hathaway has done here - I've never heard anyone do this. Lastly, a "triad" is three notes, and I don't hear Lala singing 3 notes. It may sound like 3 notes because of what's happening around her musically, but she is somehow producing 2 individual notes from one set of vocal chords. This is phenomenal. Kudos to the band for playing in a way that allowed her to be as expressive as this.
1. Lalah Hathaway 2. Anita Baker 3. Everybody else I looooove this woman so much. Her vocal control is exquisite. What a treat it must be to experience this woman singing her heart out live. God, please, let me have that distinct pleasure one day! AND, lastly, the drummer's reaction at 6:26 says it all!!!!
Maybe some people who have been sleeping on Lalah Hathaway all these years will recognize her amazing talent now. And hopefully, many others will reach back and discover her Dad, the incomparable *Donny Hathaway*. -Just like I've now discovered Snarky Puppy for the first time.
+ashley daniels My thinking EXACTLY! She harnessed her Dad and then took his mastery to an entirely different level!!! DEFINITELY my favorite singer! He's smiling and giving her standing ovations in heaven... for sure!
It sure is Ciarra!!! All is not lost... Donny left the best parts of himself right there in Lalah! This is awesome to see and I'm glad I'm old enough to know about it! LOL
Indeed all the cd/dvds, a vinyl box set later in the year is in the works LIVE is a level of amazing, I lived 3 concerts: life is so much better. More to come, new album out next week. Do FB them.
There are no words. I’ve heard polyphonic singing before, but it always sounded either gimmicky, or limited to a special genre, like Mongolian throat singing. But this woman makes it an inspiration. I said there are no words, but “amazing”, “awesome”, “incredible”, etc. still come to mind.
All stand in aw of the "Hathaway"gift of music. Donny passed the torch. Lalah you are running with it. Grew up listening to your dad's music. Everything you sing brings tears to my eyes and chills down my spine because I hear your father's voice. Gone but never forgotten. Your voice is so free and liberating.
Honestly even without that she is just extraordinary, the tone, the range, great ear, great style. Rachelle Ferrell is her friend and a fan, that tells you everything you need to know!
I’ll tell you what... when she goes multi-phonic she’s otherworldly! What the.......? I have never.... Amazing.... Her girl Rachelle is somewhere screaming! Love the bands reaction.
There are somethings in life that defies description. This is one if them! Lalah Hathaway has always been in a class by herself. This masterful performance with the band Snarky Puppy is not only a testament to who Lalah is as an artist, but she unveils a rare vocal trait that only a very few have mastered. Her father, the late Donnie Hathaway, has to be smiling from Heaven everytime he hears his daughter's voice. This is Magnum Opus at its very best!❤❤❤❤❤
After all these years taking it in i can definitely say that Lalah carried the whole band's energy with her performance, and like her performance when she peaked, they peaked.

Shenea Ophelia everyday for me
Shenea Ophelia haaaa love this comment!!!
You are not alone Shenea!
Great idea! My Goodness!
I don't think I've ever in the history of looking at UA-cam. Have I rewinded one part so much!!
What Lalah did with her voice about 6 mins in was amazing!!!! WOW LALAH!!!! Snarky Puppy wasn't even expecting that. She's a true vocalist.
Multi phonics.. I didn't know that was possible on voice.. Crazy cool
Me either Tom, me either.
Terrence Duncan Tom Collins check out Bobby McFerrin, 'Drive' concert solo. The one where he's a bit younger. And the video's a bit grainy.
Tom Collins It's common among Gregorian Chants.
I've straight up never heard vocal multiphonics before. Ever. I'm amazed, I kinda thought they were impossible. Mind=Blown.
Jon Michael Swift look for polyphonic singing, there are even some tutorials out there ;)
Bobby McFerrin, 2:20 in this vid ua-cam.com/video/codmxk7uLv8/v-deo.html
David Lee Roth in his younger days could sing multiple octaves..
not as prominent, however in the song "Somebody get me a doctor".. he does it a lot... check it out::
No disrespect to Lalah Hathaway, SHE"S AWESOME!! ,, there's only a handful of people in this world that can do that
and DLR was one of them..
What I love about Snarky Puppy comments is that it's refreshing to see that the world doesn't merely consist of trolls, faceless cowards, and evil souls. You can regain not only your hope in music but also in humanity.
Music is the Key to Life💪🏾
Yessir. Civilized folks come here....
I see man of culture
You must have written this before covid gripped humans by the brain & keeps squeezing
I totally forgot about this beautiful song !!!! Still resonates in 2024.
That final time she harmonized with herself and it fit right in that chord change... 😳🙈
I didn't even know that she could do that until this performance. Now I'm fucking depressed lmao
Bruh yes...smh my goodness!!!
That freaked me out 😱
Omg i was finna say this but you did for me BROOO SHOOK IS UNDERSTATEMENT🙌🙌🙌
I truly feel those are the spirit notes (grace notes) god gave her its to UNWORDLY .
at certain moments I hear so much of her father in Lalah's voice. that voice is magical.
who is her father. also us there anyone here thats 13 and likes this
+Jorge Ariza the late Donny Hathaway is her father
+Jorge Ariza i'm 14? Age doesn't matter just listen
+dvsn23 Glad to know I'm not the only one.
+Jorge Ariza Check Donny's "These Songs For You, Live!" Album.
...and also stop dropping your age under videos for no reason. It's kinda annoying and will make you cringe in a few years when you read your own posts. :P
My girl kills the scat improv then comes out with the dual tones!? Sttttaapp!! ugh! I'm angry. My vibe face during the groove section was real stank!
Cant believe this was 11yrs ago. Still so mind blowing
That's her and her Dad Mr. DONNY HATHAWAY HARMONIZING IN HER THROAT! 👑 it has to be... its a hi and low tones simultaneously! 🛎🙏🏽
lmao! right!
Beautiful explanation
That’s sooo good!!! I agree perfection

She should get paid just because of her existence, this is literally breathtaking.
People: "You can't sing chords."
Lala Hathaway: "Hold my beer."
... Iida-kun?
I LOVE YOUR PFPPPP
More like hold my tea. Lol
Hahaha that’s what I was thinking 😂
People: "Aight, i'mma head out"
Folks don’t forget the incredible singer/songwriter Brenda Russell who originally sang and wrote this song (and Snarky/Lalah put this ill arrangement on it). Brenda Russell also wrote “Get Here” (made popular by Oleta Adams) and “Piano in the Dark”. Much respect!
True! It was a cover that Lalah did on her debut in 1990.
I appreciate you knowing this about The one and only master song writer, arranger, producer, vocalist and performer along with capabilities of playing many instruments piano, harmonica, banjo, and guitar just to name a few!!!! Ms Russell is an immense powerhouse talent!!! Jazzz blues rock r&b pop soul and dance and yes country!!!!! Her work as score writer for The Color Purple and others besides Oprah like How Stella got Her Groove Back for example, the list is extremely extraordinary and rich!!! Luther Vandross, Diana Ross, Oleta Adams, Earth Wind and Fire, Phil Perry, Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Elton John, The Master just as talented as her friend and sister Brenda, there is again The one and only Patrice Rushen, Rufus and Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Joni Mitchell, Sheila E, to name a few!!! She has been covered and sampled by Baby Face, Oleta Adams, Luther Vandross, Patii Austin, Ruben Studdard, Ramsey Lewis, Janet Jackson,Tupac Shakur, Chance The Rapper, Thaila , Flo Rida, Ariana Grande and Still not a player, Big Pun!!!! People need to know of her Greatness!!!! The music industry is not good at doin their do diligence at letting people know of musical phenomenons like Brenda Russell!!! Then again a lot of what is produced to in the music industry is crap 💩 dodo periodddddd!!! Big ups and Royal Salute to the Queen of whatever she wants to be Queen Brenda Russell👑👑👑👑👑👑👑🎶🎶🎶💖✨🙏🏾✨
Oh damn I didn't know. Hell of a writer!
I have watched this video at least 10 times. I can only think of a handful of times that I've seen performances in which humans actually capture light in sound… This is one of those performances. Perfect...
yep. Rachelle Ferrell has the ability to do that as well as Ledisi. Only a true handful can actually be like this.
me too :-)
Ella. ....Dinah. ..Etta. ...Sarah....and Donnie would be so proud of this woman's vocal acrobatics thru out this display is of pure musicianship. That scatting is out of this world. .....that chord absolutely unexplainable. ....The delivery pitch perfect. ....i bow to u my girl...absolute BEAST!!!!!!
Real music played by real musicians and backing an incredible singer... no wonder they got a Grammy!
The joy she brings to the rest of the band is a palpable thing as is the respect they give her. A magical moment…
its got to be an incredible feeling to cover your own song years later and win a GRAMMY!
Robert Cooper She’s never been one for awards but it was her reward season🙌🏾
This song is by Brenda Russell, actually, so this is a cover of a cover.
Lalah is a magical creature. That drummer was all of our reactions to her!!
The exit of Lalah's solo where the heavy groove drops back in gets my emotions every time. Man.
Hell yes!!! I can’t stop listening that part again and again! A magnificent explotion of emotions and harmony!
We all have vocal cords. But Lalah Hathaway has vocal chords. My mind has been blown. Truly amazing.
I would have given EVERYTHING to have experienced this in person.....
+tanham007 yeah i would have
+tanham007 you don't have to give EVERYTHING to experience this..you just have to give SOMETHING
+lanasynch879 Girlllllllllllllll yessssssss!
+tanham007 I'd given everything to see 'we like it here' in studio version
+Nijs Tim ;)
Shoutout to the organ player for keeping it together when everyone else died at the same time. EDIT: his name is Cory Henry. Thank you everyone, especially for the 1K likes!!
Right!!!😂😂😂
exactly
Lmao🤣
She's actually following him, musically speaking. It's an amazing conversation between the musicians there
lmaoo
Totally blown away now this is real music here people no auto tune or fake studio music this is the real deal
If I were you I'd shut the fuck up I don't think advise from a grown ass man names tasycakes because cleary it's invalid
Two things: I wouldn't quite consider myself a "grown ass man" considering I'm only 16, but how is my name relevant even slightly. Second thing is, I didn't even give you any advise.
Also, go back to school?
OH YO, I did give you advise. I was wrong. You're still close minded as fuck though.
still gay
Best live jazz vocal performance of the last 20 years.... Incredible band and back up harmonies.....Thank you for all you do for culture !! INSPIRATIONNNNNN!!!!
Actually it’s an R&B performance. Check the Grammy
They came back extra hard after hearing and witnessing this extraordinary talent.
BUT! That was part of the arrangement! These guys know what they are doin'!
i always knew she was dangerous but at 6:11 she displayed a vocal assassin
Yes did you see the other musician's faces.
dat shit just made me cry
how tF did she do that??
SHE SO DAGGONE GOOD I STARTED LAUGHING FOR NO REASON!!!!
She must've been made in a lab to do that with her voice..C'MON!
This is sort off what I could find out about the chords she sings.
6:13 Ab min/Eb
6:15 Bb min/F
6:20 Eb min/Bb
6:25 A (sus)2
But every time I think I hear more notes coming out. Probably also because she uses these beautiful glissandos getting into the chords. Love the reaction of the band! 😱😃
I don´t think those are harmonics, more like multi-phonics, what some people call "diads" which are a clean, tuned way to break a note into two
those are for wind instruments, by the way. I'd never heard them in a singer
Héroe sin capa !
CreaMundi qq
well technically, the voice is a wind instrument. ;)
Wow. I have never heard another human do that. I got chills when she sang two notes at the same time. That had to of been a mile stone in the development of music history
I'm surprised, I can do that very easily and I never knew it was so rare, I can even isolate them both
@@tvr2120 would love to hear it if you have it somewhere online

Y'ALL CANNOT TELL ME THIS A'INT ONE OF THE BADDEST OUT!! YES ALL CAPS FOR A REASON!!! I'M AT WORK HOLLERING
I been trying today to figure out how to do what she did at 6:24
or so but alas she's a freak of nature. No like frfr. Found out through TERRELL that she was born with some weird vocal cord discrepancy that ended up being a blessing to us all. Ain't that how God always works. Never underestimate the power of your uniqueness. She got me round here preaching.
Preach!
You can learn it ! Look up polyphonic singing. Theres a few tutorials on youtube... I've been trying.... for a long periodically time lol x
There are monks who sing like this in their chants they sing two octaves in one voice. So this can be learned.
what's so special about that voice? i can't really tell. but it sounds "ghostly". i think i may be retarded.
Christian Nicholas she sings two and three notes at once by herself with polyphonic singing. It's a 'trick' even less common and more difficult than mastering whistle tones or overtones.
This sister is a surgical vocalist!!!!!.......Outstanding!!!
Her voice woke my musician husband out of his sleep.... I'm wearing headphones.
So hold the hell up. We just splittin our voices now? That don't even make no kinda sense. How can you be that talented? omfg
LOL I know. Right?!
Marcus Sewell She hasn't split her voice, but has instead found a way to make her overtones more prominent as to be heard through the main tone as well. We all have them, but Lalah has managed to make it heard. A feat few have ever accomplished.
This is so beautiful I cried.Layla is a vocal beast.
queenofweaves916 i cry or catch the holy ghost everytime i listen to this!
Queenofweaves yessss!!!
Came across this purely by accident. My eyes watered too.... Just with the sheer joy of it.
Ummm first I want to thank God and then her parents for creating something so timelessly amazing!!!
Can you imagine how proud of her dad must be.....I am proud of her!
the energy after the split was phenomenal
Golden Woman with a priceless voice. Y'all better give her her flowers!!
1. Lalah Hathaway
2. Anita Baker
3. Everybody else
I looooove this woman so much. Her vocal control is exquisite. What a treat it must be to experience this woman singing her heart out live. God, please, let me have that distinct pleasure one day! AND, lastly, the drummer's reaction at 6:26 says it all!!!!

That's why you don't play with Lalah. Donnie left us a gift AND she's humble!
She is a humble human being but very cocky w/ her voice n I love her 4 it. She knows she's bad....😑🤣
She's a sweetheart.

I live for their reaction to her polyphonic singing!!!!!

Who else is still tingling from her double harmonizing!!! I still jump up and down when I hear it.
Maybe some people who have been sleeping on Lalah Hathaway all these years will recognize her amazing talent now.
And hopefully, many others will reach back and discover her Dad, the incomparable *Donny Hathaway*.
-Just like I've now discovered Snarky Puppy for the first time.
My God if your father isn't grinning in heaven!

I like how the drummer just about runs for the exits when Laela hits those polyphonic notes. Or the vocal run up through the scale.
wow. now i understand lalah's acceptance speech. amazing performance. I think i'm going to buy every snarky puppy cd in existence right now.

Most underrated singer!
Rachelle Ferrell is
Alia Marie yes she is
She Won a Grammy for this.... yeah not underrated at all!
Absolutely!!!
Me: yeah I sing well
Lalah: *sings a chord
Me: Ima go teach kindergarten
Honestly even without that she is just extraordinary, the tone, the range, great ear, great style. Rachelle Ferrell is her friend and a fan, that tells you everything you need to know!
😂😂😂😂😂Right, make nejust wanna keep being a nurse. 😒
there's a...007 feel to this in the beginning. Utterly breathtaking performance.
I’ll tell you what... when she goes multi-phonic she’s otherworldly! What the.......? I have never.... Amazing.... Her girl Rachelle is somewhere screaming! Love the bands reaction.
Do you know if Lalah and Rachelle have ever done anything together? If so, please tell me so I can check it out!

Shit the energy after she did the harmonizing, is literally just out of this world
I had to pause Terrell and come here. 🙌

Negatives left by Skinny Puppy fans who mistakenly found this and had their brains fried.
This was my intro to Snarky Puppy when a singer friend from Denton posted it. So thankful!
Everybody is stupefacted with the singer, the dual tones and the whole musiciancraft, but nobody mentioned the incredible skills of the footage team

I'm so damn glad this exists! I come back for a dose once a month or so, to have my mind blown and spirit flown.

Her polyphonic voice really energized Snarky Puppy at the end there!! I still get teary-eyed when I hear this song!!
