What products have you purchased that you regretted later? Have you ever shopped for a "Fantasy Version" of yourself?

As I have gotten older I shop less for the fantasy self and more for the true self. I wish I had come to that point a lot earlier in life!

Yes absolutely! I’m getting to that point now too. I’m especially bad with clothes. I have so many fancy outfits and absolutely nowhere to wear any of it.

Yes...fantasy self. Clothes, hair, makeup. I now wear mostly just mascara, blush, and of course sunscreen. It's so hard, especially this time of year when all the sparkly clothing is out. But I ask myself " where are you going to wear that?" And I pass on them even though it's sooooo pretty

I’m the same, way less fantasy, always go back to what always looks good. Try to stay away from super trendy stuff. Clean and natural makeup, less looks a whole lot better on my less than perfect 57 year old skin. Love your videos.

I had to face reality: I'm 52 & have lived a life of alcohol abuse, gained a ton of weight. I'm sober now for 12 years, lost a lot of weight & my skin is dehydrated & beginning to sag. I've followed recommendations that benefit my skin. I appreciate all your recommendations!

For me. I aged and was so lost because nothing worked anymore. I was so lost and started watching make up videos. Still learning. It’s like starting all over again learning how to apply makeup. Frustrating because I have always loved makeup but it is so different when you have wrinkles. 💕

During the pandemic I began watching UA-cam beauty tutorials. I started to believe that I needed the luxury makeup “because I am worth it”. So many foundation regrets. So many eyeshadow palette regrets. So many! I now am over it and talked myself out of impulse buying. Especially sales. I would put stuff in my Sephora cart and eventually would talk myself out of them. “Do I need it? Do I have something similar already? (I bought 3 eyeshadow palettes in 2022 that are essentially the same color story 🤦🏻‍♀️). If I have a favorite now, why try something new unless you are running out of that favorite? “ I had many foundations that were half full just due to curiosity not need”. Over it! But I do love application techniques so I can best use what I have.

The comment that you made about shopping for the fantasy version of myself resonates so much with me. I have done that for years with clothes and makeup and end up donating the stuff or giving it away. I realized that the problem was that I didn't accept the me that I am now. I am still working on loving me and oftentimes that isn't easy when I see myself in the mirror. I don't want to waste the little time I have left on life hoping to look like someone else and not appreciating and loving the person I am. It's a daily struggle.

    • @GlamGirlGabi
      @GlamGirlGabi  5 місяців тому +3

I'm sorry that you're facing that struggle, it's all too common for women especially as we age. When you look in the mirror next, pick one thing you like and say it out loud! You are beautiful!

I think we've all purchased something that didn't work out because I did exactly what you said... my coloring is nothing like Kim K's so when I don't end up looking all smoky & sexy, stuff sits in the drawer. And like you, I've recently begun purging products galore because I'm happier with less items. I'm up at 5am, I don't want to have to decide on which foundation, which powder, which blush will work best that day. I put the items that are working at this particular time of my life in a small makeup bag and use 'em every single day. The only decision I want to make in the morning is should I have a nude lip or a pink lip? That's IT. Then I'm out the door and punching into work by 630am. Done. Easy... just the way I like it!!

I just returned from Belgium (I went for the Christmas markets & loved it). I noticed many of the women there do their makeup very French- clean good skin, subtle but nicely placed eyeshadows, and simple lips. I was struck by how polished they looked. and how young. Even older gals like myself looked polished and not overdone.I realized a lot of this buying we do is driven by the crazy world of influencers and "Black Friday or Sephora sales". I have narrowed down my content creators to people like you- real, honest, and promote the best in us- not the best products or reviews that will get them more samples etc. and you know what? I am buying less and loving what I have even more. GREAT video.

I love your videos and you are spot on. I recently turned 75 but still look and feel much younger. I have spent so much money since I began watching this type video and regret so much of it. It doesn't help that I am so unhappy with my life. I also suffer from depression and have most of my adult life. I will do no more impulse buying from now on. Most of the eyeshadow I have purchased this year works for me thankfully. Merry Christmas to all of you that watch these videos and read the comments. Thank you Gabi for your wit and wisdom.

I was purchasing most products from an influencer and found myself only wearing it once and moved onto the next person. Did I I tell you that I’m 79 years young? I’m totally out of that mindset and wear simple easy to use makeup that works for my Nordic skin. What a waste of money and time. Although, I have plenty of time but not the $$$$$$. Thanks for reminding your followers of that.

I don't necessarily buy due to a fantasy version, but as I grew older and turned to influencers to find products that would work for the "changing me", I constantly made the mistake of thinking what worked for her will work for me. 😏
Not so! Drawers full of fails. I'm now super careful; just because this lovely mature woman says this new holy grail foundation won't pill, or settle into her wrinkles or whatever, doesn't mean it will perform that way on my skin! 😉

I am the epitome and Queen of "The Fantasy Self." I've definitely got better as I've got older, but I'm still a work in progress. It goes across the board: hair, skin, makeup, anything beauty related, clothes, shoes, jewelry, electronics and appliances, kitchen gadgets, furniture, bedding, decor! You name it! I see someone online have it, I like it, run and buy it; but the low key me uses it maybe once, if ever! I have a huge house filled with all of this "stuff", when in fact, I could easily live in a studio apt or tiny house in the Country without any of it! I'm an EXTREMELY natural & low maintenance person, but my house tells a completely different story and it looks as if I'd be high maintenance! I'm just glad I'm not alone in this, whew! Thanks for sharing, Happy Holidays, cheers! 😘

Hi Gabi, I do not shop for a fantasy me regarding color. I will buy products that are advertised to help with aging skin. I loved your final survey question. My answer is how I found your channel and enjoy learning from your content greatly. I shop for makeup the way I always have. So I I guess that could be a fantasy version of me. I shop for makeup the way I have since I was in my 20's or 30's. I wear my makeup the same and have wondered since my late 40's and early 50's why it just doesnt look right anymore. It accentuates my aging instead of helping. When I was younger make up was always for 'decoration' let's say. But after watching you makeup is more about making the best of what I have and where I am at. Thank you so much for helping me solve these mysteries.

This video definitely shared some wisdom. Before investing in a tool that requires daily commitment it is sometimes difficult to realize that you are focusing on who you idealizing yourself to be. Maybe in reality you aren't dedicated or just will not have the time based on other priorities to daily use a product. / tool. It seems obvious but it is so easy to buy that tool thinking that just having the tool fixes the problem - when only daily dedication will fix the problem.

That was the perfect description, buying for your fantasy self, never thought of that, very clever. I’ve been more mindful recently, because I realized that I wasn’t looking the way I wanted to. I found myself buying them because of the hype from YT videos, everything shadows, lip products, mascara, powder, brushes, etc. Now I analyze and ask myself the questions before I purchase. To answer your question, sometimes. Sometimes I forget how old I am (51) and look for very cute dark purple or dark red brown lipsticks only to look like a Nosferatu when I put it on. I have full lips and I like the idea of dark sophisticated lipstick but sadly at my age usually it doesn't look good anymore. Also, sparkly eyeshadows or eyeshadows in most colors other than neutral. I am sad I didn't play with make up when I was younger, now it's much more difficult to look good with anything other than neutral colors.

Great video, Gabi, especially the fantasy self product purchases. Mine is red lipstick. After watching videos during the pandemic, I was convinced I could pull off a red lip. Um...nope. Now there are 10 tubes moldering away in my drawer. Live and learn!

I hear you, great advice, thank you. My bathroom cupboard is now only half full 😁 Like yourself, I gave as much away as possible, threw away out-dated stuff and refused for six months to buy any nrw type or brand if I already had one. Liberation! 😅

Thanks Gabi, I am growing out my layers & going for the blunt bob on my fine hair. As for makeup, I got rid of some palettes & lipsticks. If felt good to simplify my make up to a couple of small palettes & I love a good stick eyeshadow because they don’t take up alot of room & are easy to travel with. My favorite mascara has been the volumizing one from Well People which is available through Ulta or Target. Thanks as always for your information. 😊

You Gabi are just too darn smart!! ☺I have an eye shadow palette that I have used like twice. Yup, I'm looking at most of the shades in it and thinking......what Was I Thinking?? I think I'm going to give it to my granddaughter to "play" with. I'm sure she would have better success than I. Thanks for the fabulous video Love it!

I just discovered YT beauty channels in 2016 and was hooked 🙄. The last few years has become about buying less, what I KNOW I will use and only restocking staples. I've given away so much product & continue to; I only want what I KNOW I wear regularly ✌🏾😉

You will help so many with this topic! Now at 66, I'm FINALLY GETTING AWAY FROM EXCESSIVE BUYING. It's taken a very long time, and I rely on (financial expert Suzie...... 🤦) advice:. DO I WANT IT, OR DO I NEED IT....... always sets me straight. 🙋🎄✌️

Yes, I probably hope to create a fantasy version of myself. That's the fun of makeup. However, I am mature and have learned over the years to not follow the trends so much. Also, good products are an investment that usually pay off. Thank you for asking such a great question! I enjoy your videos!

Thanks for your videos! I'm not guilty of shopping for my "fantasy self" but what I am guilty of sometimes is buying on impulse, like retail therapy when I'm feeling down. One question - what's your favourite lip gloss, but WITHOUT the plumping effect. I seriously can't stand any fragrance or that tingling thing from the peppermint oil or whatever - that's a huge NO!

OMG YES!!!! I think about this ALL the time. I look at results for women who are far younger than me and then I purchase. I am soooo wrong I know it...but I keep thinking one of them surely will work. I guess I am the perfect target. I am a skin care junkie and try it all. LOL. So I totally fit in that category. UGH!!!!

Gabi I I recently found you, I think you are so awesome and beautiful! I love your content , I am a 60 yr old and so happy that you feature us mature women! I have yet to find my foundation color so I have a drawer full, I m not fortunate enough to have a store close by to have a consultation on that, any advice? I would say I am a light to med. neutral to warm, Brown eyes, use to be dark brown hair but went semi blonde to disguise my grey, and was too harsh on me now at this age. I really don’t use foundation but prefer the skin tints but still is such an ordeal finding the right shade. lol thank you! I am so inspired by your content! Happy Holidays!

Sorry. I had to use Google translateled. 😁. I understand English perfectly, but I don't write it well. The subject of your video has a lot to do with me, but I think I'm someone who really likes to live my fantasy world. Especially when I don't work (nursing). I wear sophisticated clothes even just to walk around the block 🤗. I made me up like I was going out at night 🤣. Sometimes I feel the stares (I'm Brazilian, but I live in Denmark). Here in Denmark people are very minimalist 🤗. I'm 53 years old and I accept myself as I am. I love my fantasy world, but we definitely have to be a little realistic and try to curb excess unnecessary purchases. After all, not everyone has so many square meters for so many things 🤣. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Kisses 😘

I had a waver once and got rid of it eventually. I bought it because a cute blonde with long hair at my work had waved her hair and it looked fabulous. It was a lot of work and wasn’t really for me. Also I’m a low maintenance person and don’t like to fool much with hot tools. If I curl my hair I put it in rollers and dry it or sleep on it.

I recently got the Marilyn Monroe PR Box from Wet n Wild. I absolutely love it and would highly recommend it. The make up lasts all day on my skin and makes me feel a bit glamorous. It works on my fair skin tone. The illuminator is fabulous. The red lip liner, lipstick and gloss are so pretty. Now that my hair is white silver the red is really working for me.

I do shop for a "fantasy self" which happens to be ME before menopause. I used to be in the cosmetics industry & pretty proficient. Now at 62, I know the old way doesn't work, but sadly the age appropriate modifications don't work either. I'm in NowhereLand with my makeup and never feel attractive anymore!
