After the Harry Potter film series became one of the most popular of all time, it’s only natural that Warner Bros wanted to keep cashing in on JK Rowling’s magical franchise ones those movies came to a close. Just a few years after Deathly Hallows Part 2, they launched their new “Wizarding World” project with the Fantastic Beasts movie, starring Eddie Redmayne as Nugget Scaffolding- erm- Newt Scamander. Here we are with the third installment of the Beasts movies and… it’s a movie!
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore definitely raises a few questions. Like why is a magical baby deer integral to wizard elections? Why is everyone cool with Grindelwald going from wanted criminal to candidate in a matter of hours? What exactly is everyone doing in this movie? Where’s Tina? Why is this magical world so void of color? Will Producer Guy finally manage to buy Canada?!

When the comedy skit comes up with vastly better twists like Jacob being pure of heart, compared to the big budget movie.
Super Carlin Brothers also suggested it in their review of the film.
Tbh when I was watching the film I thought for the longest time that they were electing a new Minister of Magic for Germany, not the whole Wizarding World.
I immediately thought of Jacob as well when screenwriter guy was getting to that part. I thought "huh, cool they did that", disappointed what happened thou. Albus isn't at the point in this messed up timeline to be pure of heart, considering he was ashamed to fight grindleward after his sister died.
I thought it was gonna be Newt but Dumbledore? Doesn't his brother expose him as a huge egomaniac in the Deathly Hallows?
They thought about it but since they seem to think their audience is less intelligent than a retarded monkey on Crack they instead went:

Yeah, I also thought Jacob for sure would be the “pure of heart” character they constantly were hinting at. I would’ve loved that.

The guilty pleasure of watching a "spoiler" pitch meeting for a movie I have no intention of ever, ever seeing.
Wise. You're not missing much. I was awake for the first act, slept through the second, awake for the third and I feel I didn't miss anything as I'd worked out out in the beginning.

Me too, loved the pitch meeting, but hell will freeze over before I ever actually watch the movie, even for free.
I suppose Queenie being suddenly forgiven makes as much sense as her being suddenly evil in the last film.
I thought she was a spy, but they just never bothered to explain that.
Her whole thing was she's in love with a mundane but relations with mundanes is illegal. Grindelwald then makes a rousing speach in the second film and mentions this very thing in passing but coming off as though he disapproves of the government's mandate to marginalize people's choices in relationships.
So Queenie signs up with him thinking he's got the power to change this law so she can be with her mundane boyfriend without being arrested. There's also that whole thing with her having trouble with her legilimancy and Grindelwald promising to help while also looking to use her gift for himself, naturally.
And that's pretty much Queenie's motivations in this anthology.
@@meganparrish807 you've done a better job rooting through the nonsense than the movie did in explaining it. Grindelwald is openly, joyously anti Muggle. One passing reference to maybe changing segregation versus his constant "muggles are garbage, amiright?" doesn't work for me as sufficient motivation for a character of even room temperature IQ to believe he'd be ok with wizard muggle relationships. So a) she's deeply stupid or b) the script is lazy or c) both. I lean to c.

My biggest issue was that stupid blood pact that completely erased a major part of Dumbledore's character: in the 7th book Dumbledore specifically said that the reason why he didnt fight Grindelwald earlier was because he was so afraid of the truth about his sister's death. He let people die and suffer because he kept avoiding the fight out of that fear. The blood pact takes completely away that character flaw, by retconning the reason for why Dumbledore didnt stop Grindelwald before. Its like they had to suddenly make Dumbledore the best pure person ever again for these movies, when one of the major points of the last book was that in the end he WASNT one.

I completely agree, I hate blood pact. It erased humanity out of Dumbledore. Because its human to feel love or fear... and very human to just not be perfect. I thought much more about him when i discovered that he fought Grindelwald in spite of all these things, it was inspiring. It meant that even though we have our flaws, we can do better and do what is right at the end.

Dumbledore being pure of heart makes absolutely no sense when the entire HP series is all about how he had a dark past and how that also translated to the way he treated Harry as well... I was livid with that Qilin scene.
The idea of Jacob being the one that has a pure heart and Grindlewald having to come to terms with that is so good
The Qilin should have bowed to Jacob, it also bonded with him earlier in the film.
It's so strange that it would choose Dumbledore of all people after all of the things we've found out about him from the Harry Potter series.
@@Manganization - The only explanation I can come up with, is that the Qilin bowed to Dumbledore because he is the main character and had good intentions at that very moment. Since, the entire point of his character is that he is Machiavellian. Plus, he literally does not even defeat Grindelwald for another 13 years.

Dumbledore, a well established legiliment(effectively a mind reader) and influential figure in the wizarding world, let Serius rot in Azkaban for a crime he didn't commit. That same man manipulated Harry's entire life to kill Voldemort without telling him why. That man is somehow pure of heart. I mean sure, the good he has done vastly outweighed the bad, but he definitely was never what I'd call pure of heart.
This is before all of that.... pure of heart, doesn't mean permanently pure of heart, ya know? People change.
@@sageseeker9197 Albus also seriously entertained the idea of using his magical prowess to rule humanity and only abandoned the plan after he got his sister killed (possibly killed her himself). All that before this movie.
The entire point of the later books was finding out the Dumbledore a bit of an opportunist. I guess it was a fall from grace or reverting back to being a prick depending on how you look at it.

Hollywood has quite a warped sense of morality these days.
I feel like the Qilin kneeling to Dumbledore is really 'out of nowhere' in the senses that it's so obvious that you sort of just go "why?". Having Jacob be the true of heart would definitely be a better message and dramatic scene.
Also Credence having a sudden change of heart shares the similar vibe to Queenie suddenly being forgiven

I feel like Dumbledore himself from the Harry Potter books would tell you that he is not pure of heart. In fact the whole point of the 7th book is to expose that Dumbledore was not the saint that everyone thought. This is just Rowling forgetting her own canon and characterizations ONCE AGAIN.
Maybe Rowling things people like Queenie and Credence have changes of heart like a woman taking a new birth control or during her time of the month.
Except Jacob wanted to abandon the Plan and run with Queenie & he would never stop her, no matter how many people she harmed. Dumbledore went the to toe with the love of his life when it could have killed him, then duelled him the second he could. Jacob would NEVER do that, he'd protect his girl while she was ending the World. People need to learn the difference between "pure" and "boring audience insert for straight white dudes who's only personality trait is being nice"
I'm so glad that these super expensive movies are made every year. Not because I care about the movie, but because I get a seven minute pitch meeting about it. Truly great stuff.

ya if it weren't for pitch meetings to fall on top of these grenades for us let's just be honest and admit that we'd all get tempted by their siren songs of enticement. by being able to satisfy my curiosity and get rid of any doubt that I might be missing out on something amazing in just seven minutes it saves me a whole lot of time and regret! I look back at the past when I sat through all those promos, slow establishing shots, story progression, etc. just to feed the hope that something exciting might happen at any moment, and I think to myself, "never again, never again will I ever have to be put through something like captain marvel or the last Jedi!"

I thought that was going to be the end of the video and it would show an article saying that the movie underperformed and the series is cancelled.
The Harry Potter universe keeps trying to convince us that dumbledore is a good guy when he’s literally been exploiting his students since 1927, left a student to rot in Azkaban knowing fully well he was innocent, and allowed one of his students (possible magical ward?) to be abused for a decade. So, yeah. Guy with the purest heart. What a great dude.
And now they want us to believe he loves wands for more than one reason... 🤦♂️
Aside from that, at the end of the books/movies, we learn that he still hasn't forgiven himself for the death of his sister and he was thinking of leading the wizards together with Grindelwald... Like yeah people change and you can have good intentions (the Greater Good), but i wouldn't call it the purest of heart. Also makes you think about all the other people in the scene. How fucked up are their lives and hearts, that Dumbledore is the purest among them?

Dumbledore kept talking about loving Grindelwalt, but I saw zero evidence of that. There is more chemistry between the Joker and Batman than there is between Dumbledore and Grindelwalt. It's almost like they wanted an in-your-face constant reminder that there is a gay character in the movie so you think it's progressive, but without actually having any gay love in it.
"A sexual, intense relationship" my ass - most they've done is probably just hold hands one time and accidentally get a boner.

I was actually expecting the deer thing kneel before Jacob and was so disappointed when it kneeled before Dumbledore because that didn't make any sense if you know his story at all. Dumbledore was a good guy but he also got tempted a lot and actually gave into the temptation once or twice. How can he be pure of heart?

To be fair, in the books at least it had been previously mentioned that part of the bigotry towards muggle-born wizards/witches is a false belief that magic can be stolen.

The fact that Dumbledore did some sketchy stuff *in the past* doesn't mean he can't be pure of heart in the present.
This also adds to the pain Dumbledore must be in because he is presented with empirical evidence that he is a good person yet he still can't bring himself to accept that as the case because of the guilt of what he has/might have done in the past.
I think the reason Dumbledore brought Jacob to begin with was because he thought it would bow to him, but was surprised and confused when it chose him instead.

Plus the stupidity of "He's pure of heart", immediately followed by torture. Like, does the wizarding world have a completely different definition of what those words mean?
The comment about the other candidates is spot on. We literally learn nothing about them. At one point in the movie, they said "Each candidate has their own unique vision for how they want to change not just our world but the non-magical world as well." And I just sat there thinking, it would be nice to know what those visions were.
Right, I really expected it to be Jacob there at the ceremony. It was even teased several times like by the dinner table when the creature liked him, when people told Jacob had a full good heart, and when Dumbledore told him what suitcase to pick up (which I expected held the creature but was proven incorrect)

I genuinely thought the deer creature was going to kneel for Jacob. They even kind of teased that happening earlier in the film. It was a bit ridiculous that it knelt for Dumbledore. We all already know Dumbledore’s heart. 🤦🏼♂️

@@GD_Dripster While that's true, even in the abominable second _Fantastic Beasts_ movie Dumbledore is introduced as a manipulator, and that characterization seems to continue into this movie if he gave Jacob a wand at all knowing that a) Jacob couldn't use it at all and b) said wand could potentially be used to implicate Jacob, who "inconveniently" also can't apparate away.
I usually roll my eyes at the fan-fiction depiction of Dumbledore being evil "just" because he manipulates people, but he's also definitely *not* "pure of heart" given he always seems to have at least one secondary scheme going on whenever interacting with anyone and everyone. That part of the character is still the same here, 50+ years before Harry "Sacrificial" Potter is even born.

Many websites listed the premise as something like: Grindelwad is gathering an army to start a war, Newt and his allies must race to stop him.
Realised this premise essentially applies to all 3 Fantastic Beasts movies since nothing really noteworthy happens.

“So there’s a President of all wizards now, isn’t that contradicting literally everything we’ve done in this franchise since the second book, because this world has multiple wizarding governments. The previous movies plot started because the British and French wizarding governments had a disagreement”

And he is president for like a WHOLE minute! Inbefore getting easily defeated with a thing we knew existed from the very first setpiece. Great storytelling and totally worth the watch!
Just imagine their discussion with the Prime Minister, who is sort of a muggle/wizard liaison.
"So, you see, we just elected someone who's declaring war on muggles. But, you still have to keep this a secret from the rest of the non-wizard world."
Two words: Supreme Mugwump. It’s been in the series since Philosopher’s Stone.
This entire series should have been episodic, with each movie being about finding/stopping/saving some mystical creature. Sometimes it's a creature in danger of extinction that needs to be found and saved, sometimes it's a legend Newt wants to prove really exists, sometimes a super important creature to a culture that's stolen by poachers and Newt saves it. Newt should have been a cross between Milo from Atlantis and Indiana Jones, just solving magic puzzles to find magic animals.
That would have made so much more sense and been more exciting than whatever the heck the series is actually about.
That requires a well thought out plan... With good writers.... We don't have any of that in these sequels ... Just making stuff up with each new movie....

honestly, i think the best direction for the franchise is to try to not use harry potter adjacent characters at all. or at least very little. i wanna know what the wizarding world is like in other countries

There was literally in the subtitles of the film a character that said “I don’t get it” during the election scene and I was like “that sums up the whole movie.”

Dumbledore, who carries the guilt for being partially responsible for his sister's death and devoted his youth to overcoming death, is pure of heart?
I also thought it was confusing, I felt like in the Harry Potter series they made it somewhat of a thing that Dumbledore wasn't perfect even though Harry idolised him, also Jacob's arc was clearly going to the direction where he was gonna be the pure of heart anyways, fucking weird

It has come to the point where I'm happy that most movies are train wrecks because it makes such good Pitch Meeting episodes.
Yup, repeated questionable decisions of J. K. Rowling, the storyboard writers for the films and the choice of actors have made me care less about the films than a fart of above average volume. Love the pitch meetings though! :D

I love that in the election part in the mountains, Newt is stopped by the German guy's assistant, she takes his briefcase and knocks him out. Then Newt wakes up immediately, runs up to her, takes the briefcase back with 0 effort and the briefcase disappears for some reason, and there is no point to EITHER of the interactions because Newt just appears near the election candidates right after, and the assistance never appears again... Why was that in the movie?!
Ezra is a madman. I hope that he learns his lesson soon.

Honestly, I thought I was the only one with the exact same question throughout the whole thing.
A guy being able to run for and nearly win political office even after people know he did horrible things beforehand is probably the most realistic thing in the whole Fantastic Beasts franchise.
Ah, but a recent poll has determined that there are over 12 people in the US who would not vote for a presidential candidate if he was convicted of a fellony in the same news cycle as the election, so there is hope for us muggles.
I am disappointed that we did ask, "So, what are the actual Secrets of Dumbledore?" ... cause at no point do we actually address that in the movie.
Perfect fit since the crimes of grindelwald seemed to be...throwing a lizard out of a window, I guess?
The only "secret" is that Credence is his nephew. That's it. J.K only cares about making money and is retconing the entire Harry Potter franchise.
@@drogadepc disagree. Actually making Credence his nephew was the only way out without retconning. I was very worried at the end of part 2 and am quite relieved with this solution.
The secret is his intimate relationship with Grindelwald, the fact they still kind of love each other, the death of Ariana, the secret plots in this movie.
That he's gay (even though he's about as gay as Hermione is black despite what J.K. Rowling has tried to say on both matters) given that wouldn't fly in China. That and I guess that he gave Jacob a wand secretly to use Jacob as a fall-guy in an "assassination" attempt doomed to fail, which somehow still allows Dumbledore to be perceived as pure of heart by a magical baby deer (that he probably brainwashed when no one was looking) despite his manipulativeness.
But like why wasn't Jacob the one who was pure of heart?? They completely led us to that conclusion and it made much more sense from a story-telling perspective AND would rationalise why they got a muggle involved in all this, really solidifying the one quality he brings to the team that the others can't measure up to. Rly missed opportunity IMO to (ironically enough) give the film much more heart.
In this movie they failed both at setup and payoffs.
They missed the payoff with Jacob been the pure of heart, and they failed every setup with the dude who betrayed but didn't really betray (google tells me his name is Yusuf Kama).
Like, he goes to Grindelwald, he tells him that he is there to spy on him, but that he also supports him, they confirm this with mindreading. So Grindelwald removed the memories of Yusuf being angry at him, so he has no reason to betray.... and then he betrays anyway.... like... what? Why?
@@BertockLeg totally agree with that, the yusuf 'storyline' was never explained nor did it actually affect anything (no payoff as you say). I think they had too many characters, so shoved some off to the side (like hey where's nagini for example?)

Let's not forget how most characters don't even get a single line in this garbage. They're just there starring at each other and pretending to be evil.
The only reason I can think of why the Qilin kneeled in front of Albus is because later on in the HP films, Fudge is always terrified that he wants his job... so perhaps it's because if he wanted it, he could take it. He's already been deemed pure enough to have it.
But doesnt that just make their mutual distrust less interesting? If Fudge isnt sure about Dumbledore and his motives - understandably so, the man is clearly wacko - it makes sense that he keeps him at arm's length, but if he knows that *everyone knows* about the deer-thing, doesnt it just show him as... incredibly petty and weak for not going with Dumbley? I dno, it kind of feels like turning Fudge into a slimeball for no real reason.
They really did drop the ball by not having Jacob become the leader...could've turned that into a whole new trilogy of how Grindelwald and his followers overthrew that, since the muggle world was separated by the time harry potter rolled around
So glad there's a way to watch AND be entertained by this movie without giving WB Money.

You forgot to mention that we're supposed to believe that everyone is like 10 years older than the last movie, which means that Newt's in his forties, CREDENCE IS 32, and Theseus is 50. Wow, those wizards must've found the fountain of youth.
Brilliant as always. This movie (and the last one too) just shows that a book author isn't necessarily a good script writer... a confusing, pointless mess. Sigh. I love how they just quickly wrapped up all loose ends in this one, as if wanting to start over.

I originally signed up for Eddie Redmayne catching Wizarding Pokémons in his hufflepuff scarf. I stopped it after the second movie was a freaking disaster
I once saw an alternate idea for how the franchise could have unfolded: like Indiana Jones. Each movie a completely stand-alone adventure in a different part of the world, with a plot centered around a beast of local mythology. The writers could have collaborated with the local film industry to flesh out how that country's Wizarding World works, and featured local movie stars in lead roles. It would have been a great way to expand the universe without bogging the series down in continuity traps.
The audicity of "I don't knoe" when he is the one that wrote the plot is always make me laugh.

I'm gonna say the exact same thing i said about the other fantastic beasts movies: This movie would be about a million times better if it actually was about, you know, fantastical beasts. Seriously, why the need to put a discount voldemort into those movies? Just have it be newt going around researching about fantastical beasts and gently educating his fellow wizards about them. And if you absolutly need some anatgonists have it be some crime syndicate hunting down those fantastical beasts to sell their parts or something like that.
I agree. The first movie had the magic and wonder of the Harry Potter series, but now they’ve just abandoned that for dark and gritty, with magic beasts thrown in “just because.”

@@pallydan893 this is spot on. Either the Qilins myth is just that, a myth. And it just picks random, which would be the only explanation for picking Dumbledoor, over Jacob.
Yeah everyone kept telling Jacob how brave he is and kind-hearted and selfless. In fact Dumbledore literally said to Jacob that he has a pure heart. I thought that was an obvious setup for something. The only reason I can think of why Rowling overlooked that payoff is because she's making stuff up as she goes along.

It absolutely doesn't. One muggle being pure of heart doesn't have any impact on the wizarding world going stir-crazy because they have to hide their existence constantly. It would have been narratively satisfying though, what with all the foreshadowing.

The message that, any one can be good and any one can be bad, cast creed religion, colour, magical abilities have nothing to do with it.

The Harry Potter series made it incredibly clear that magizoology and an interest in magical creatures in general is weird and rather looked down on. They even have little respect for intelligent, magic-capable creatures like centaurs and goblins. Hell, they shackled a freaking dragon in the bowels of Gringotts to use as a glorified guard dog. Even the first two Fantastic Beasts films established that the wizarding community at large was disinterested in magical creatures, outside of a couple notable exceptions that were just as out of character for the wizarding world. Now we're supposed to believe that they have all this respect for a magic fawn? It's not even remotely in the realm of congruent with the rest of the series.
I feel a bit bad for watching the Pitch Meeting before watching the movie, but the fact that I'm doing this to movies I don't expect much and get to be kinda bad helps a lot. I'm still gonna watch those movies... Sometime...

Ok Story Time; I went to see this yesterday and there was barely anyone in my screening. A few minutes in, a mother and her daughters - all under 11 years old - came in (expecting to see a fun family film with a guy talking to magical beasts). They came in just when we got the magical equivalent of Bambi and Grindlewald slitting the Chillen’s throat. Needless to say, an hour of magic politics in, they left.
My screening was me and my sister and two others that sat towards the top. That's it for a 5 o'clock show. And yeah I hated that scene as well.
Poor kids they come for fantastic beasts not stupid politics!

Yeah. They're mostly without dialogue, so far less chance for needless exposition, and it's just wizards tracking down magical monsters and stopping them from hurting muggles whilst remaining hidden. Like conservationist wizards. Want Grindelwald in there, have him try to use magically mutated monsters to attack people so they have to stop his monster machination.

He sees the future, he's not reading minds or following their every movement. How do you deceive someone who just has to see one exact moment where he's likely to be felled? Even if you plan to have several people attack at different angles, I don't think that's an overload of information unless you get hundreds of people involved.
I'm glad Ryan pointed out my exact thought regarding the shoulda-woulda-coulda of the qilin kneeling before Jacob. Show of hands, how many others were annoyed that they deliberately skirted that? Probably some "subvert expectations" nonsense that most writers need to stop abusing for their bad storytelling. Namely because that's partly why it's bad storytelling.
That spectacular moment where Pitch Meeting comes up with a better plot resolution than JK Rowling.
