  • Yuzu may be gone, but it will always live in our hearts. Even pirates tear up sometimes. But not you and me. We totally would've used Yuzu for homebrew stuff and proofs of concept.
    In any case, I wanted to dive more in-depth onto Yuzu's tragic downfall. This clip might be a bit more educational than the others, but I hope you stick around through it. Love you all.

    Nintendo went after Yuzu because they knew it could be adapted to work with Switch 2 games, they say the Switch 2 is very similar to the Switch.

    Modern Vintage Gamer has a video entitled, "Why was the Sony PlayStation 2 so hard to develop games for" - it's a really fascinating video that sort of inadvertantly explains why emulation for the PS2 is so demanding; a lot it has to do with synchronization & timing of all the various components -- getting everything to communicate at acceptable speeds is hard.

    Since we don't know the full story, and likely never will its all conjecture, but I believe Yuzu screwed the pooch in some way. While Nintendo has the power to crush anyone with a frivolous lawsuit, its doubtful they would. They have shown to attack like sharks when they are allowed to though.
    Regardless, wear the tinfoil hat and yar be mateys, we sail the seas of morality. Dubious it may be.

    It's not just that Yuzu were accepting money, they were sending out patches for a game that hadn't come out yet to paying customers only, meaning they were directly profiting from customers that had to get the game illegally. Nintendo saw this as a golden opportunity to signal "all emulation is illegal" and capitalized.

    Yuzu only recently was ported to phones, because Skyline devs were scared. I don't know if Yuzu even had ARM build for computers.
    They failed in many ways, mainly being paid early access and having patches/roms of new Zelda.
    Sudachi looks more promising.

      I just lost passion for it. Started with frontend too way back in 2014, when IE7 & 8 support was still a thing, CSS3 was just coming out, and the fanciest thing for devs was jQuery. 😄
      At one point, I just realized that it wasn't what I liked to do anymore. :)

    I was wondering the other day if they could just make their own official type of yuzu and let us buy it. Not all but some people who only emulate wouldn't have an issue paying Nintendo to play on the pc/phone. I never play my actual switch cause my pc run it better.
    I too loved yuzu. But I wondered why switch emulation was so much better than the others and you explained it perfectly. Thank you

    • @VladNerd

      Basically it's like this:
      - If the host hardware (hardware that you're emulating on, like a laptop) emulates a console of a different architecture, then emulating set thing will have some performance cost. (Ex, windows laptop --> Switch [x86 --> arm]). Most PCs are super powerful though, so that extra performance will mitigate this and you might still get good emulation.
      - If the host hardware has the same architecture to the console you're intending to emulate (phone --> Switch, aka Arm --> Arm, then the "emulator" just acts as a translation layer, because it'd just facilitate communication between the two sides, without doing other, more complicated stuff.
      Ryujinx would work on the same architecture (arm --> arm) if an Android version of it is ever built, while the Windows version emulates across architectures (x86 --> arm). I hope I explained it better for you guys. :)

    I bought a Shield Tablet when it was first released. My lord it was a horrible little tablet that ran so poorly that I skipped the Switch given it was based on the Tegra X1 SOC. Yuzu was ALWAYS running a risk of being sued into oblivion by offering an app that could compete with a going concern like Nintendo and the Switch. Pure insanity that they brought on themselves. I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for tbh. Just my opinion lad. Thanks for making my Sunday just a little bit better with surprise content. My basement flooded on Thursday so I'm back to bailing but yours was a much needed break from the horror of wet crap littering my basement.

    • @VladNerd

      They really lived dangerously with trying to build an emulator for a handheld STILL in its active lifecycle, and one by Nintendo no less. 😄
      I'm really sorry to hear about the basement man. Stuff like this is horrible. Lost my entire collection of "Mickey Mouse" comics that were released in post-communist Romania between 1993-2001 this way. Kept them prestine, but oh well. Made efforts to digitize the collection many years later after that, so at least there's that.
      If I could, I'd be there with some beer, a mop and a bucket to help out. I hope this didn't completely mess up your Sunday. :(

    Emulate games win the console shop and services stop. But Switch was still active and people downloading the games during release day in other sites. Playing games with active consoles isnot emulating it is piracy!!!
    Look at 3ds, ds and etc. Nintendo doesn't care about emulating that. But yuzu makesprofit out of stealing Nintendo IP and games which is on the market today. As collateral rip citra.
    No one stop you from emulating, as long as you make you're own software and legal keys to run it. Yuzu is illegal. Spreading pirated sourcecode.

    • @VladNerd
      @VladNerd  3 місяці тому +2

      I respectfully disagree. Emulators allow you to run the software that you own purchased copies of (this has been deemed legal in court multiple times and is one of the reasons that emulators were allowed to thrive in the first place).
      Same as Yuzu. The entire source code was open source and *not* stolen. The problem wasn't even that you had to extract your own Switch keys, or even the fact that people exploited this to pirate games (which happens with all emulators, tbh).
      The big gotcha was that they tried to monetize this through their Patreon, which gave Nintendo an opening to go after them.
      In development or not, emulation is and always will be legal, that's why the contributors don't hide under shady anonymous identities like the old cracking groups used to do back in the day. :)
      In any case, I appreciate your point of view and thanks for expressing it.

    • @QuantumChrist
      @QuantumChrist 3 місяці тому

      @@VladNerd , I disagree respectfully, The main reason why people uses emulator is to pirate. You know why yuzu got taken down? Cause they earn profits in patreon by stealing Nintendo property!
      And how the stealing happen? Yuzu and in their server, TOTK has been already pirated many times even before the official release. That's the real reason why Yuzu is taken down. Nintendo sues anyone because emulation is illegal, they sued because they practices illegal distributions and they gain profit. sadly citra became a collateral damage.
