Thank you again SO SO much Scruffy for this honor. Working with you on this was a dream but the amount of effort you put into this analysis really leaves me speechless
And by keep it up I mean make sure you enjoy and you’re satisfied with what you do, this is the kind of music that I love when doing something, even tho it’s made to be background music for a game I feel like I could listen to it on a playlist
love seeing you work w him austin! your work on journey has srsly impacted some of my outlooks and opinions n im glad to say that cello is now one of my fav instruments :p
I think most people don’t realize how good the editing in these videos are, everything just has this amazing sense of flow and unique style through the text choice and colors. Good job
those timings are perfect. you can see the graphics moments before he mentions the meaning of them and just as he does the animation hits the spot soo good. i reeealy like this video, truly a piece of art in it self.
i dont understand 80% of what youre saying but the way you do it makes me feel like an absolute music genius like im learning so much about all types of music
wait what? i did not notice how long it was, i enjoyed every moment so much, time went by so fast. man this analysis is realy well done if you are having fun watching it. :D
You’ve certainly come along way from talking about the secrets of the pikmin 2 title screen, I would have never expected two of my favourite musicians would collaborate to talk about one of my favourite game scores!
@@Sadcat-vy8xn Hey, thanks for asking! I no longer work at that job (Dominos) and I work at an orphanage for the disabled now. Its a really great gig that pays twice as much as Dominos and I was finally able to b
I love how the pacing of the video almost mimics the pacing of the game itself you can tell Scruffy really worked on the script to compliment the score in its pacing
This video analysis is absolutely FANTASTIC. I've heard of ABZÛ but I've never taken the time to look into it. Three minutes into the video and I'm instantly hooked and inspired.
Abzú is one of my favorite games I’ve played! It’s the only game I’ve replayed more than once. It’s fun, exiting, and I loved it! If they could make a sequel, I’d be the happiest! Too bad they... If you haven’t played it, let’s just say they can’t make a reasonable story sequel after the ending. :(
And Grayfruit, my favorite streamer (even if I never catch the streams and prefer watch the VODs) just played this game the other day ! He's the one that introduced me to Pikmin, it's thanks to him that I got recommended one of your video on pikmin a long time ago ! Everything is connected !
i recently made a lets play of this game, im not plugging my own channel or anything (i only have like 4 videos), its just a nice coincidence that i found this video after i played it. but i mostly dint realize there even was music at all while playing.
What a great analysis. It perfectly encapsulates what I love about Austin's music. It's so creative and complex, but always for the sake of the game and the story. It's what makes his scores so essential to this game. I vividly remember playing Abzu for the first time - especially this climactic part at 30:06 - and being completely in awe, thinking: "So this is what video games can be." Thanks to Austin for this sublime score!
Wow Austin also did the soundtrack for Monaco: whats yours is mine which is one of my favourite soundtracks. I NEVER knew he composed for journey amd abzu
I loved all the different call out at the beginning of everything he's worked on. When I found tooth and tail which had the soundtrack composed by him I listened to it for a solid 3 months
Goodness, this really makes me want to play Abzu again. I've already played it multiple times, but the music, the visuals, the story... all of it made me come back to it, again and again. If I do end up playing it again some time soon, you better be it won't be the last time I will play it.
This type of piece and video composition, as well as the topic and style always put me at ease. This one in particular hit me good. I’m about to go to bed after this. I’m all cozy, reflecting on my day a lot like this game. I love this. I just feel happy, and that is amplified by the gym stuff I did in the morning. I can’t wait to play this.
I've been waiting for more analysis content! I love how easy to follow along as you explain music techniques and components and vocabulary. It is very enjoyable to consume and experience as a non-technical music explorer. Collaboration with the composers kind of emphasizes the emotion and work that went into these beautifully constructed musical moments. In otherwords, this is a beautiful video and I am in love with your content.
Abzu is a wonderful game, and I feel like it should get every bit as much praise as Journey. Heck, I enjoyed it more and the music played a big part in that.
Thank you for allowing me to watch up until 15:46. I'll wait to watch the rest of the video until I've seen the credits sequence of ABZU. This may turn out to be an interesting video to watch later.
I played ABZÜ for the first time blind years ago and it was an amazing, impactful experience. This music pushed it from beautiful to completely stunning. Thank you Austin.
This was such an amazing video! Like holy crap this was awesome. ABZU is one of the coolest games I've ever played and the soundtrack is one of the most unique I've ever heard. It's so fascinating to learn why it works the way it does
Man, Journey will forever be my favourite artistic game. And the fact that Abzu follows that kind of beautiful gameplay is too good, all you could do while playing is just smile :)
I've had this video in my "to watch later" playlist ever since it came out. I absolutely wanted to play the game first and I finally got round to it a couple days ago. I played it beginning to end in one go, and I'm so glad I did. Like you said, this game is an experience, and I'm so glad I waited for your video. It's just so wonderfully done. Your collaboration with Austin is the stuff of dreams on the UA-cam sphere, and what is truly sublime is the amount of work you put into your videos. So thank you for blessing us with all of this, I'm so glad I discovered your channel
All of your videos give me such a unique feeling while watching it. The music, editing and style. I found your channel through your Breath of the Wild video, and I’ve been a fan ever since. Thank you for these videos.
your videos are some of the best I've seen- the visuals are nice, you are a very nice artist and editor, its smooth and nice to look at. however, for when im playing it in the background, the verbal part of the video is just as nice. your voice is calm and never shouts into my ear, and you explain things in a way that isn't boring yet you simplify complex things so that everyone can enjoy them. you are a very great musically, visually, verbally and at editing , and you also just seem like a god damn nice guy who doesn't judge people or look down on people, being okay with explaining things in a simple (yet interesting) way and honestly just wanting to share what you love with the world. can't remember the last time I felt genuinely excited to watch every single video of someone's, please don't stop doing What [You] Love :] commenting on this video in particular because this seemed like such a love labor
May be accidental I kind of do it around 1 in 500 videos since I binge stuff late at night. I like to think I catch my mistake afterwards in almost all cases, but that's likely not the case.
I literally didn't know about that system of audio mixing before, literally designing game mechanics to connect to musical notes. Thank you so much for explaining all of this, this was so lovely to watch.
wow that was a beautiful video! I loved hearing Austin's insights and your analysis was so clear and eloquently put. I loved all the little animations and graphics, they really helped me understand everything, especially since I don't know much about music. The whole video just had a really great flow, I never felt lost or got distracted.
Great video as usual, and really cool insights from Austin. I'm so used to him being in the interviewer's chair these days that it's nice to hear him get a chance to talk about his own work!
Ok can I just stop here for a second to express how incredibly detailed and in depth this video is. This is the perfect game to go into the musical score on and I certainly learned a lot. And the colab with the gamer musical writer was great too. Love listening to your stuff while at work here Scruffy. I'd love to see you keep it up! Have a great day, you've definitely improved mine.
I really enjoyed abzu as an experience, and you've made the game even better with this analysis. I absolutely loved this video, you should be proud very of it too! You've done a fantastic job!
I litellary crying for 40 minutes straight and ended up in a burst of tear, this is SO AMAZING. i really love you and the developer who made this game. This is trully a love letter and it touch my heart into the depth of it. Thank you so much for sharing this to us!

That's _why_ it's good. It's _so_ good, that you don't even _notice_ it's good. The best kind of editing.
Make sure to check out Austin and Scruffy's second video on Austin's channel!!
i dont understand 80% of what youre saying but the way you do it makes me feel like an absolute music genius like im learning so much about all types of music
Ah, another one.
Idk what it is but I love that friendly little "Hello!" in the intro
The “I’m scruffy” is so warm and friendly too. :)
i believe that is a chord he’s singing, commonly used in nursery rhymes.
Had to stop at the spoiler threshold, but I'll be back once I've experience the music in-game myself!
ABZU is a game so beautiful I nearly cried. Great to see someone talking about it.
This is the biggest cross-over ever to man kind.
I'm absolutely impressed by this video! Fantastic work Scruffy! Big kudos to Austin too! Such an amazing collaboration!
scruffy’s soothing voice almost managed to completely quell my thalassaphobia that the visuals in this video rile up. almost...

i literally cry every time i hear a lot of this soundtrack
It's cool that Austin was on board for this.
This reminds me of Ori, which is another game with similar sounding orchestral music. That could be a topic for a later day if you wanted to
