I have only had my mental retainer for like a month now i clean it but there is this white stuff on it i am guessing its plac but not sure. But. Idk how to get it off. I brush my teeth after every time i eat . I can it with mouth wash and tooth paste , and my tooth brush. But i cant never get the with stuff off of it.
This is great if you wanna remove a lot of tartar from the retainers, but it has proved difficult to remove all of the tartar using this method, unless you like spending hours on end doing this. Your best bet is seeing a dentist where they can remove all the tartar professionally.
You can brush the retainer occasionally but you don’t want to use toothpaste because it’s too abrasive. You have eagle eyes and I love that you pointed this out! and I love that you’re paying attention thanks for the Q
@@askthedentist I was going to ask the EXACT same question. I use a soft toothbrush every single day, with regular hand soap, and then soak in water. Retainers are turning yellow. I have had retainers for under 4 months; did not expect yellowing. Bought RetainerBrite; used it for the first time tonight, but it didn't remove the yellowing. I will try some of the other methods. I hope I don't need new retainers... they are not cheap. Thanks.
What about Distilled water for the overnight soak on night guards, rather than tap water? I have it readily available but is it suitable to soak in distilled water with the baking soda? Thanks so much for your video and replies in the thread.
Your website says dissolve 2 Tablespoons into 3/4 Cup of water. That seems to be way more than what you put in? I've had trouble getting all the the baking soda dissolved when using 2 Tablespoons. Is that correct, or maybe you meant 2 Teaspoons?
I have been using a denture cleaning brush to scrub my mouth guard every day. Should I replace it with a soft/extra soft toothbrush, or use my electric Oral B instead, and only occasionally brush?
Hi Dr. Burhenne, Thank you so much for this amazing video, I have only one question, how often do we do this method, every day, or weekly? Thank you for your answer in advance!
Hey Hanna, I usually recommend doing this any time your retainer is not in your mouth. Once a week, I've also started soaking it in water and vinegar for about 15 minutes to kill any bacteria that may be trying to build up. You can learn more about the specifics in the link in the description. Thanks for watching!
Sean Craven for however long you’re not wearing them is fine. If it’s Invisalign that’s in your mouth all day, you could let them soak while you’re having a meal. Half our should do it but it’s more about keeping them in an alkaline bath that prevents bacteria buildup. that helps clarify.
Dr. I have not wore my retainers in months and my teeths are badly disaligned now , my retainers are stored in some stainless steel container like the one in the video filled with water , and yeah i am so lazy that i didn't even change the water for months i think they must be infesting with all kinds of bacteria , does this method deeply disinfect them ? Please reply
Well I tried mouthwash, toothpaste, and have used the fizzles, but will try this method. Baking Soda is found anywhere if you look for it in baking isle of your supermarket, I buy a big 5 lb bag at Sam's, Walmart...so trying it today, what about the metal containers? Can use the "glass" also? I hope so...
I used the white vinegar method + baking soda diy method but it didnt work There was a big build up of tartar on my lower hard acrylic biteguard I tried soaking in pure apple cider vinegar for 15 mins then tried scrubbing but didnt work Is it safe to soak in pure apple cider vinegar for a while to get the hardened tartar off? I dont know if it will degrade the hard acrylic but i cant seem to get the tartar off easily. Do i scrub immediately after taking it out the vinegar? I havent even diluted it because it isnt making the tartar come off it is all yellow and brown so very hardened
You can, if that's what you have. I would avoid the plastic container if it begins to etch since you don't want plastic chemicals getting in your mouth.
I know this comment is 2 years old but maybe you're still wearing braces. You will get retainers and if you don't wear them your teeth will start to move. I hope you wear them. I know a few people who said they didn't wear their retainers and their teeth went back to the way they were before. Good luck :)

Where do you buy those stainless steel containers? Thanks.

Soak in vinegar once a week for a few hours

Use a soft bristled toothbrush

I do already have like the white tartar on my retainer, will this remove it?

Vinegar
Where do you get the containers to hold the retainer throughout the day? Why do dentist/ortho give you plastic container to begin with?

Is this safe to use on a Hawley retainer with soldered joints? Will this corrode the metal in the joints?
Works like a charm!
How long am i suppose to leave it in the water. And do I rinse it before I put it in my mouth.

Is using baking soda with Hawley retainers better than vinegar?

I would use a soft bristle brush instead so that it doesn't wear down the guard material. This will help it last as long as possible.
1. Wake up and rinse retainer.
2. Soak in baking soda and water FOR HOW LONG?
Thanks

Is it okay to wear retainers while eating??
no
No you’ll just end up damaging them
How much time though?
Mine extend to the back of the roof of my mouth

Can u use dish soap
Hi there,
Most dish soaps are full of chemicals that you wouldn't want to put in your mouth but it can also damage the material your aligner.
