- Senator Bob Dole, a wounded World War II veteran who became a Congressman, Senator and Republican presidential nominee, died Sunday, December 5 at the age of 98. "Sunday Morning" correspondent Rita Braver looks back at the life of a son of Kansas dedicated to his country; and talks with former Democratic Senator Tom Daschle about his colleague from across the aisle.

You know, when a contemporary figure leaves us and moves into history, we feel loss, but for those of us who love history and cherish this country's past, they are never really that far away. We thank you for a lifetime of service and achievement for this country Senator Dole. God bless you and sleep well.

Bob Dole was known as the welfare queen and he did was Continuously vote for more welfare.
A great American hero. Just like John McCain, he stood for his principles and was a class act. My condolences to the Dole family. R.I.P. Senator Dole.
Another loss of a great American from that resilient generation when sacrifice in service for one's country was not questioned. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.

*Questioning* is what we do in representative democracies. If the cause is right, then it will withstand all questions and criticisms.
The one thing that the late former (U. S.) Sen. Robert J. Dole (R - Kansas) will truly be remembered for is resilience.
He was such a decent, good man. He will definitely be missed

RIP. I hope that our nations leaders take a minute to try to understand how American bipartisan legislation should be practiced. More than ever, America needs leaders from both side of the aisle to be more like Bob Dole.

I was very fortunate to have met Senator Dole and I even shook his hand! He was in Rochester, NY for a Lifetime Inspiration Award which was presented to him by Lifetime Assistance, a nonprofit agency for people who have disabilities. He wasn't supposed to sign autographs that evening, but he signed one of his books for me. This was back in 1999. I have a photo of him and I around here somewhere and I still have that book. Bob will be greatly missed and I'll always remember his kindness.

Yes, Bob Dole prided himself in the Senate as a great compromiser, and to him that was not a weakness but a way of getting the job done in a way that benefitted everyone.... not just those who had the upper hand. One can only hope some of that spirit rubbed off on politicians still around today.
If he had decided to run again after his loss, he would’ve easily won re-election in 1998.

I've watched CBS for decades and I had no idea Bob Dole was such a strong and resilient man and decorated war hero. RIP to such a great American.

Senator Dole was both a Patriot and a Statesman. He sought compromise, because compromise is a significant process of representative democracy. Otherwise, authoritarian leaders will emerge by limiting privacy for the common citizen.
So he did Viagra ads as an old man. So what? Democrats don’t have sex after age 70? From the numbers I’ve seen they do.
We will never see his like again...

First General/Secretary Powell, and now Senator Dole. Such great, pragmatic politicians who worked for the betterment of their countries, rather than for their own gains or the ego of someone who would rather see the country fall than accept defeat, as so many people from their party do today. Bob Dole was a good, kind, and actually very funny man who loved this country and did a lot of good. May his memory be a blessing. 🇺🇸

Bob Dole fought for our country when he was younger and he was in his 90's when he passed away from lung cancer
I met Bob in 1996 in Columbus, Ohio. Really a remarkable man. He will be missed.

The one individual whom the late former (U. S.) Sen. Robert J. Dole (R - Kansas) owed a tremendous amount of gratitude toward was an Armenian-born orthopedic surgeon named Hampar Kelikian, MD, who fled the Armenian genocide that was orchestrated by the Ottoman Turks during World War I. Thankfully, Dole was afforded the opportunity to live to see the day in which a president finally acknowledged the occurrence of this 'crime against humanity.'
A truly good man & unquestionably great American---yes, the latter 2 words still mean something and remain possible to achieve.

Bob Dole was one of the last Senators or Congressmen of the served in war generation. You still have some, but not many. Most today are about power and money not America. Even Dole went along with the overly partisan movement of Newt Gingrich rather then decry it. Today the Republican divisive machine has metastasized out of control to the verge of one party rule. Sad.
He was a brave, handsome, honorable man. I did not agree with him politically, but he was willing to compromise.

I'm not sad he's gone. He took handouts when he was in need then years later tried taking handouts from others. He's the reason why I turned to the Democrats. 1996 was the year I was legally allowed to vote and his campaign repulsed me. He moved me from the Center to the Left, where I stayed till Hillary Clinton ran the last time. I won't celebrate his death, but I won't mourn nor honor him either.
He spent his entire career supporting the tobacco industry and he was a heavy smoker who died of lung cancer.
