Tell me about it. I live in my family home built by my parents in the 1950's. When I was a boy, everyone in the neighborhood knew everyone else and helped and did things for each other when the need arose. It was a good feeling of safety and caring. Now, I happen to be the 7th longest living resident here (not in age but time living in the neighborhood) and all these new people don't even want to know me! I tried being friendly to some of them, but they looked at me like I had 2 heads or something and took on a very "defensive" stance. They won't even wave hello!
Ms. Jennings, at least SOME people came to see you in the hospital. I'm a bachelor and most of my immediate family is all dead now. When I had surgery earlier this year, the hospital wouldn't allow me to have it unless there was someone at home with me for a day or two after my release. I had to hire private duty nurses at a cost of a couple thousand dollars which was NOT covered by insurance! So much for caring...........

They didn't go wrong in '96. The American people don't have as short a memory as some think. Back in 1982 when the Reagan revolution was really going strong with his economic and tax packages which were voted in by BOTH parties in Congress (and supported by a majority of the people) to combat the bad economic situation we had been in since the recession of '75, Dole, as head of the Senate Finance Committee spearheaded a plan for a big tax increase on the middle class. Why? One of the main reasons was to make up for tax cheats. Basically, he wanted the middle class (who was just coming out of struggling) to pay more to make up for criminal tax cheats instead of going after the cheats. People didn't forget that. And Bush the first promising "read my lips no new taxes" then signing into law a tax increase was also on peoples minds.
Clinton did raise taxes, but ONLY on the top 2 brackets. Basically, joint incomes of over 250K (400K in todays dollars) and he balanced the budget. The middle class LOVED that. Also, people (mistakenly) credited Clinton with the economic boom we saw in the 1990's after the crash of '87 and the ensuing recession during H W Bushes presidency. Under Clinton, growth was actually a percentage point higher than it was during the '80's with Reaganomics. So basically Dole was not trusted. Which is why I voted for Perot in both 92 AND 96.
As far as FDR not being electable today, sadly (and disgustingly) there is truth in that. However, in Dole's case, the American people have always made exceptions for men who became disabled during and as a result of the wars. Especially World War II and the Korean War. Dole's arm really had nothing to do with his loss.

May the good Lord watch over Bob Dole. What a remarkable, kind, compassionate human being, yet very strong and determined individual. He sacrificed himself for his love for his country went to war in WWII. He impacted a lot of life for the common good of the people, yet he still thinks that he hasn't done enough to help others. What a selfless person he was. He is my hero ❤ in my heart. And we all should be like him, doing good and helping others. Our leaders nowadays should copy him as an example of what public service should be, serving the people and yet being kind and compassionate. It is rare nowadays to find someone like him.

He knew how to compromise with both democrats and republicans, and at the end of the day, he still exhibited so much love and respect towards the women in his life. It's a shame his political career was cut short just two years before I was born, because we need leadership like his in today's divisive political system. When both parties were courting him to run for president in '52 and he was asked his political views, he said "I am a soldier of all the Army and the Army is truly national." Ike was so bland and blah that pundits used to make fun of him They used to call the White House the "tomb of the well known soldier."
