The Bridges at Bathurst: Transforming the Streetcar Project with Realistic Roads and Bridges

- In this episode, I'll take you along as I work on transforming the Streetcar Project into a more polished scene. First, I experimented with painting techniques by constructing a test piece-an angled roadway representing York Street by Union Station.
After that, I moved on to building two bridges-the Bathurst Bridge and the Spadina Bridge. I used a laser cutter and dollar store dowels to create each bridge's piers and concrete supports. Once those were in place, I added railings, gave the structures a weathered look, and even added some graffiti for authenticity.
Next up was the design and 3D printing process for the Bathurst Bridge. I carefully assembled all the parts to create a stylized bridge replica. Once it was complete, I painted and weathered the tracks, added ballast and ground cover, and put the finishing touches on the surrounding scenery. I installed hand railings, street lights, and plate girders to truly bring the scene to life.

I agree, very successful. Nicely done.
The bridges look great. Cheers
WOW!
Holy cow! Amazing!
Outstanding
Awesome effort- worth it to add another dimension to the circuit
Thank you my friend!
I've not been to Toronto since I was a kid way back when. This project makes me want to visit!
That's high praise! Every time I want to go to Toronto I just head to the basement now...
LOve it
Absolutely incredible. Looks great. You could say what you did really bridges the idea of reality with creativity. Awesome work as always.
Thanks! I like to think I went 'yard' on this one.
Great work! It looks really amazing.
Love the bridges and tram! Nice work too in blending the bridge piers into the landscape.
Thank you. It was nice to do some scenery work. It's been a long time...
Great results!!
Good video, like!!!
Really made some progress. You can use the Dawn soap sprayer for those looking for an atomizer. Cool idea, thanks for showing me. I went and got an empty and tried it and it works.
Great. I've used Windex sprayers in the past, and the missed it produces is about the equivalent of running the garden hose on the layout...
Wow, great job. Both bridges look like how I remember them. Your layout is going to be awesome.
I really appreciate that. I'm not concerned about getting things perfect, I'm just interested in making things close enough to the prototype that the people that are familiar with the area recognize them. So far so good!
Awesome work, love your lamination method of the bridge. Beautiful scenes with the movement of the streetcar above the Union Station throat. Looking forward to your next episodes! Cheerio
Thank you very much!
Bridges turned out great. My last railfanning trip down there I took a bunch of night shots from the Bathurst bridge
Night shots? Have you shared those anywhere? I seem to remember 1 or 2 images?
I love the details and how you're stylizing the layout to capture the feeling of the area. Amazing!
I appreciate that. Every time I visit the area I see more things that should have been obvious the last time I looked at it. I've never worked on a project quite like this so I'm learning quite a number of new things.
Sick work! You have some great skill. It looks fantastic
Thank you very much!
That's some really nice work you did there. 👍
Wow this project has really come along nicely. Well done. I see your skill keeps getting better and better .
Thank you very much!
What a result! Your scenery work is impeccable. The graffiti is a great touch.
Thank you. The graffiti is a lot of fun. I'm hoping to get better at it as it's not quite natural yet.
The lacy bridge looks fantastic and kudos for making a test road for practicing the painting. But there's only one H in asphalt.😉
Next time, waaay more H. 😉
Excellent job. The result is so realistic! Thanks to share!
Thank you very much!
This is simply amazing! The hand-drawn graffitti look great as well as the paint on the roads! As always, I CANNOT wait to see what else you do to this!
Thank you very much! I'll certainly be doing more graffiti. It's a lot of fun and a nice way to spend a few hours.
Looks great! Just am FYI, to simplify ballast, use a ballast hopper, so much easier and makes for a nice profile!!!
I actually don't mind ballasting the slow way... It's relaxing!
Love that tram section 'cause the tracks ain't entirely visible!
They're hidden, and NO FUN TO CLEAN.
@@NScaleDystopia Haha, indeed; looks cool and sleek, but a maintenance nightmare XD
I'm amazed by how you use 3DP, It's something in between lasercut but with variable raised detail, in parts that are seemingly with few layers. I guess your parts are made without waiting hours for them.
Thanks exactly right. Filament printing on a flat surface to make raised details takes very little time.
This is such a cool project and it's so much fun seeing it unfold in every video. Just the other day I was wondering if there'd be a new video soon and lo and behold...
These bridges look amazing and I love the details like rust and graffiti - makes it look really realistic! In general, the graffiti in all your projects are a highlight to me, cause it makes the dioramas feel "lived in". I wonder, are these entirely made up or based on the graffiti that's actually in Bathurst?
I saw your comment about the layout update and I decided to stay quiet as I knew this was coming up. As for the graffiti, most of what I did here was simply made up. However, I do have lots of photographs from the area that I'll hopefully be incorporating into other parts of the layout.
Great job but we are really missing the zombies !
Really loved this video. It feels like a while since we've seen you doing landscaping of this kind and my you are good at it. The moving tram alongside the trains below gives a great sense of realism. Nice work.
Thanks! I think it's been 7 or 8 months since I did any scenery work and I miss it. I've enjoyed the planning and track laying, but getting to do some scenery is really what I enjoy.
Well done, brother! I’m going to have to call you when it’s time for ballast 😝
I only ballast once every 3 years... 😉
@@NScaleDystopia you’re better than me. I haven’t done it in 10 😂
So cool. I love what you have done with the layout. Any thoughts on subway… ummm as in TTC not the food chain.
I think I'm not doing much more. TTC as I don't find it near as interesting as true railroading. I've got an Ontario Northland project planned I thought I'm excited about!
5:55 that gap tho.
There were no gaps until the humidity changed... I was originally going to fill it in but I'm concerned it'll buckle the track later!
Fantastic loving this build but im missing dystopia need some post apocalypse from ya please
I did stop short of destroying these bridges but I will return to them. Some of these projects take so much time that I'd rather see them in perfect condition before I return to them and make them far more apocalyptic.
Absolutely impressive work! Do you plan to install working street and traffic lights etc.?
I did order some street lights off eBay, but they were grossly oversized. I would probably go with static light stands unless I can find convincing working units.
@@NScaleDystopia agree...yes, it's a problem for N scale to find this stuff of appropriate size. What about using fiber optics for making good street lights?
incredible work! I absolutely love this layout!! where did you purchase the go transit mp36/40's from? Ive been looking everywhere on the used market :(
I happen to find a gentleman online last year that was selling all of the go equipment that he had purchased at an estate sale but never bothered using. I don't know if I would be building this layout if I hadn't got the pieces that I did. I look online constantly for additional engines and passenger cars, and they do come up very occasionally, but they are very expensive... 😶
Question : How have you set up your street car to automatically reverse direction a the ends of the tracks ?
I found that Kato model so cute, I just had to get one. :)
I haven't wired the reversing circuit yet... But it's ready to go. To make the train go back and forth without traveling past the end of the track, diodes are inserted in the last 4 inches of each track end. These diodes allow current to flow in only one direction. When the train reaches the end of the track, the diode blocks the current and stops the train. Reversing the voltage allows the train to move in the opposite direction, and the diodes restrict its movement at both ends. A timer circuit changes the polarity of the track every 90 seconds, ensuring the train shuttles between the two ends while being stopped by the diodes.
What glue are you using for the styrene and 3D printed parts?
I'm using a low viscosity, super glue. You can get large bottles like the one I'm using for far less money than little tubes. Brand CECCORP
Looking great. Are you going to do more weathering to the bridge steel structure and handrails on the bridge? I'm not sure what it is like in real life, but I'd imagine it is dirtier and potentially more graffiti on the steel structures next to the walkways.. Either way, it's looking good. :)
In real life, both of the bridges are fairly pristine... And I do not accept this. I'm going to revisit them and do more weathering in time but this project took so long I needed a break from it. 😁
@@NScaleDystopia Yeah I can believe that. I've taken some time off from mine. School holidays have helped pull me away, but I was needing a break having gone hard for a few months. Look forward to seeing more. :)
