Excellent choice of music!
Sad...Yes I worked there in the 50's installing electrical stuff and it was , shall we say grim? rough old place, but, a big but, those folk who strived to make a living out of this place were heros!!! The ladies were hard working but yet fun and I for one remember my apprenticeship days with admiration for the workers, I married one of them,raised a family, had a good life, but now Im alone and treasure the thought that the mill would stand firm to the memory of those who toiled there.
It is sad that that this is not the case, and in 1000's of years from now as they dig up the remains, I wonder if they will give a thought to those who worked there??

My word, I actually worked here in the late '90's (anything to stay off the dole). It was a gorgeous old building, but you could tell even then it was in decline (anybody who remembers the old lift can vouch for this!). I have very fond memories of the people who worked there, the old bosses were real slave drivers but despite this, everybody managed to have a great laugh. Not been in Shaw for years, so very sad to see its gone.

Notice the stone and cast iron floors? All designed to control the spread of fire, so much work and craftsmanship. Gloomy places to work in but sad to see a beautiful structure torn down
Thanks! I come from Shaw and used to shop at Dawn Mill. Great place! Not much rreal use for anything else, though!
Love cotton mills,worked in one when i first left school while i was waiting to go in the army,got cold feet and became a welder instead..
I thought so many UK property developers are turning many buildings like these into smart loft apartments, especially during the naughties boom years!!!
Why was the building torn down I think it could have been used as an app building or some of other building?

We can't save every old building. Just not feasible for many municipalities. Yes, they are historical, beautiful, could be reused(but wait how many years for plan, architect, funding while scrappers gut its interior)?
We lost a beautiful complex in our town a couple years ago. The Crowell-Collier complex covered a city block. It was a former printing powerhouse for decades which closed before Christmas 1956. It's next life was a 10 story warehouse hulking over west side of downtown and owned by a fellow not too keen on building maintenance. Two fires was its death knell. I believe every building that he owned in our town, short of his mansion, was demolished after his death?
My great great grandfather laid the las brick of this mill at dawn that’s why the mill is called dawn bit of history there for you 👍🏻
Cant understand cara brimley' The working classes in the then oppressed industries worked tireslessly to make a living from the mill, to make mill owners money to invest in England (not like today) to secure the future of the next generation, to be taxed in order to provide services to the people which, no matter how you look at it, is where you are today. Health care, high standard of living, Govt support all brought about by the taxes paid by the owner of the mills in Lancashire and beyond.
If you look at the history of the cotton, and woolen mills in England you will find the owners did more for the workers in terms of housing and education than can be imagined.. Eccersleys Mill Wigan has a good library and display of the work done by mill owners..Have a look at this, it may change your outlook.

lts holds memorys the building may be gone but not the memorys, everything in life is a part of letting go
your right, but again this is socity today the throw away mentality, however there are enough preservationests that can put up a fight in many cases to save old buildings and put them to reuse. lucky though as it would be the people finaly started to realise that using an old building style and blending in new buildings with the older ones in style is much more pleasing to the eye and people like it more, so its being done even if only putting facades on the old buildings have character though.
+Manga 12 - Good comment but there is no need for facades. Old building are much nicer looking than the new glass and plastic ones (That burn pretty quickly when it comes to it). Celebrated architecture is either faceless, cold, and without character, a fine example of cut and past. Milk cartons or grotesque mimikry(sp) of what real buildings look like - graceful, decorated, filled with the pride of design and craftsmanship of execution.
why, such buildings are versatile, they can easily be converted into another use such as fancy offices or apartments. they are better than the cheap glass-concreet structures they would otherwise put up. and manny modern companies prefere the atmosphere such converted buildings offer.

@angelaseed Who cares about the working classes, most of them are as thick as two short planks! This looks like a good building for the new wave urbex smash crews. There was a load of stuff that could be busted up in there.

Why could this mill just be converted and preserved into something else, I don’t see a reason why it was demolished. It is also sad too see it leave the earth. Literally.
Can someone enlighten me.... Who in this country instigated & organised this insane idea of demolishing an edifice of this magnitude? Which.... has the capacity to be converted into all sorts of alternative uses.... It being built of quality, sound construction, which in present day money terms would cost an enormous amount to build! I am personally sickened by the noggin heads of UK who encourage all this kind of behaviour under the banner of progress in a world which is still as uncivilised as ever. What example are these 'noggin headed authoritarian buffoons' to the future generations?? These decisions are yet another set of deliberate nails in the coffin of the UK & its eventual demise. 'PITIFUL!'
+mrgoodintent It would be useless for modern building conversion. Loads of things wrong. Acoustics, insulation, waterproofing etc etc.Would not meet modern regulations.
Much cheaper to smash it down and start again than to try to convert it.

Your comment shows you know nothing about modern construction, especially high end properties. It would cost *more* to do it like this and meet modern regulations. The only small possibility would be some façade retention and smash out al the insides. it would still cost more though; development is all about cost and profit.
If it doesn't stack up, the developer will not take the risk.

Yes they are, but sometime their onion is wrong. Which was why this useless old mill was smashed to the ground and not converted.

Demolition company seem to have little idea dangerous and un professional huh animals they can do this but wouldn't have clue how to build one. proper buildings and craftsmanship

Sickening. Could have been easily converted into alternative accommodation. Not to mention dangerous. Bet the drivers arse was like a ragmans trumpet taking that down. Not to mention the asbestos poisoning they spewed onto the surrounding community.
Asbestos was removed prior to any demolition operation.
Edwardian cotton mills post 1890 onward sadly cannot be renovated into apartments because they were built to house mule frames so the design and construction method could not make them viable for anything other than being a production or warehouse facility.
I've no idea why this has suddenly come on my youtube...anyway...I remember standing with Jim when he was taking the videos, I was taking stills. I lived close by and it was frickin horrendous during demolition, the smell, dirt, rats etc, but of course, they compensated all the local residents for the disruption...did they F***! The lift shaft was several feet deep in bird and bat guano, and bird carcasses, there must have been serious health and safety issues during demolition. The demolition kept getting postponed because of a protected species of nesting bats somewhere in the building, a 'specialist' team was brought in to rehome them, I think they were relocated somewhere up towards Sholver or Grains Bar. Sainsburys were the original developers but then decided the people of Shaw and surrounding areas were not a suitable demographic for the likes of sainsbury's! WTF? Then it was going to be a 24 hour tesco, they too pulled out perhaps because all the local people were up in arms about a 24 hours supermarket and petrol station right in the heart of the community, then Wallmart/Asda came in. There was a stipulation that a certain percentage of the original brickwork from the mill had to be incorporated into the new build store.

Sad these buildings made Britain Great. True working conditions were hard .but thats our history weather you like it or not.could it have been repurpoused for anothet use ,maybe .nevertheless sad to see it being demolished great craftsmen built it and i am sure they felt proud about it.

How on earth can anyone be so sentimental about keeping such a relic from the slave trade of Lancashire people who toiled long hours in these places of torment just to make the owners and other buisnessmen rich - I worked in a mill such as this and believe me it was every bit as grim as it was made out in films - destroy the lot - have done with them they have had there day long ago - move on !!!!.
