In this video I am going to show you how I made emotes for twitch and discord! This was my first time trying to make a custom emoji but I think they came out pretty good! I started off with making sure I had the right kind of square to work with so that the quality of my drawings come out ok.
First I made and colored a canvas that was 800x800 that way when I resize it later the drawing will still be readable. Then I made a larger canvas separately. I copied the the 800x800 canvas and pasted it onto the large one and started duplicating the square until I had a grid of squares that I could work with. Then I began sketching my ideas onto the squares. Drawing different expressions is always good but also try to make emotes that make references to your channel or stream that way your emotes feel more personal!
After sketching I lined everything and started coloring them. I use clip studio paint when I work but a lot of digital drawing programs should work similar.
After everything was colors, I went back and gave everything a thicker black outline and then made another outline to everything in white. This makes it so that my emote pops out on dark and light backgrounds.
It's also important to keep lettering in mind. If you want words, make sure they are short words and that they are readable from far away.
take a good look at your emotes from afar to see if you are happy with them and then start resizing and saving them!
Twitch's emote sizes are 112x112 56x56 and 28x28 so very small. Your art will probably look pixelated but that's okay! They will be tiny and as long as you have strong expressions in your emotes they should read ok from afar. If you have any questions, leave a comment below and I will answer them as best I can!

DPI matters not one fig if you define your canvas size in pixels. Truthfully though, Celsys should use the acronym PPI. Somewhere along the line someone decided those terms (DPI and PPI) were interchangeable (they are not.) Anyhoo, you could set your canvas size to 800 pixels x 800 pixels @ 12 million dpi and still have a canvas size of 800 pixels by 800 pixels. Thank you for the great tutorial :)
Oh! Thank you so much for clarifying that! I appreciate it!
amazing work!
these are amazing! thanks for the helpful tips!
Thank you!! This really helped
Very nice :)
Thank you so much!
They're so cute! I don't use discord but, I wish I could use them on Instagram 😍
That would be amazing! If only!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh im speachless how do u do this
You are sooo underrated
That's very kind, thank you
So underated!
Thank you for your help! I'm not really a designer but I wanted help figuring out why whenever i crop and use discord emotes they look tiny and its because i wasn't making them in the resolution of 112x112!
I did not see a confuzzled (confused and puzzled) one. I would to see that if you haven’t made it yet!
You are heaven sent!!! Thank you so much for actually showing how you do the template T^T
I'm so glad it was helpful!
A “But Scomicmaker...” banana man emote
That is a great idea! I need to see how I can make it work small but I am totally writing that one down!
very nice video. i can't draw worth a snot but im sure i can find somone tht won't rip me off
Nice
Hey so I'm aware that this may seem like an odd comment, but I really like the background song you used! I checked for the song but I couldn't find the specific one. Does anyone know what the song is?
EDIT: Also, this was a fantastic tutorial! Should've mentioned it, lol.
This video was so helpful but I have a problem with my drawing, when I change the resolution of the image the quality of the drawing gets bad. Can someone help me with this problem?
Is it happening when you resize them? Unfortunately its inevitable for the quality to go bad when resizing but when you use them at such a small size it wont be noticeable. If it's happening while you're drawing it might be the DPI. When you open a new canvas make sure your canvas is set to 300dpi or more. I usually do about 300 or 350dpi. I hope this helps
@@Scomicmaker thank you for your help! It actually happens when I resize it, even when I do the 112x112 the quality is really noticeable and blurry
Hello, does anyone know how big a canvas I'm supposed to draw for discord?
how do you make animation over the videos that you uploaded?
Can you please do an emote sheet template?
hmm, I'm not sure it will help honestly but I will see what I can do!
I want to know what programs people use for it. I want to make my own that looks like me
What's your twitch channel name? :O
i used your dimensions, but when i go to change the image resolution, it comes out blurry and pixelated...
What is your DPI? Maybe I can help? Unfortunately the smaller it gets the more pixelated it will be
@@Scomicmaker i usually do 800x800 and 350 dpi, but so many different artists do it differently.
@@kitcatcourtney8581 hmm. That's how I did mine too actually. After I made them at 800x800 I made separate canvas's that were the other sizes and resized them that way. But they are still going to be pixelated no matter what you do at that size since there are only so many pixels that fit in a canvas that size.
I would recommend watching baban illustrations videos about emotes. Those videos helped me a lot
@@Scomicmaker Ah okay, thank you! But even the biggest size tended to be very blurry and pixelated, but I can still try and improve on it!
How do you get the square layers to move like that after you duplicate it?
What application do you use plz tell me
I used Clip studio paint for these drawing :)
Thank you for telling me!😁
I feel really stupid, can anyone please help explain to me how to make the emote "grid" in clip studio paint? I've slowed the video down and watched a thousand times but i'm not understanding how you got the smaller square boxes on the larger canvas? I made one 800x800 canvas and another 2800x2800 (just random larger size I choose) but I don't know how to merge the smaller canvas "boxes" onto my larger canvas? & I love your emotes and artwork, you have a very lovely voice and personality!
hmm. It's hard to say without showing but essentially I did this:
1. Made a large canvas. I didn't choose a specific size so mine ended up being 8138x3745 at 350 DPI
2. Open a new canvas at 800x800
3. Color in the 800x800 with any color you want
4. go to edit, then copy to grab the layer with your colored square
5. Go to your large canvas and paste it.
6. Pick a spot to start your grid and place your square there
7. Duplicate your colored square and use the arrow key on your keyboard to move the square over to the right that way it's still lined up with your first box
8. Keep doing this until you have a line of squares. you can merge your layers together and duplicate it after this so you can move an entire row instead of having to keep duplicating one individual square
9. This part is more about eyeballing it. The spacing on my grid isnt perfect so im not sure how to do that either.
I hope this helps! If you have any other questions you can email me if you want! Scomicsubmissions@gmail.com
@@Scomicmaker oh my gosh, thank you so much for taking the time to reply and write this out for me. It helped so much, I appreciate you. You are amazing at what you do! 🤗💙
I love them uwu
Thank you so much!
This is a great and awesome tutorial.
Also, I was having trouble understanding how you did the "square" where you could draw the sketch and color in. *hAlp*
Do you mean how I took the correct square size for making this grid?
I took a separate image that was 800x800 and colored it in (you can use any color) then I took the selection tool and copied the layer and pasted it on the bigger canvas. That way it was the correct size. I hope that makes sense!
That's awesome :0
Thanks for the fast response Scomic 💙💙💙 ~(=´∇`~=)
@@avagol I kept adjusting it as I went along but by the end of it my canvas got to 8138x 3745
@@Scomicmaker ahh tysm💖
Hi nice video :)
I see you’re resizing the emote from 800 to 112, 800 to 56 etc. I only made my badges for now but I’m resizing from 800 to 72 to 36 to 18. Is it the wrong way? Does it change something on the resolution? Bc I’m not going back to 800 before resizing
How can i enter your discord
Here is the temporary link! discord.gg/Wsn5C2
Thank you so much! ^^
I was wondering about doing this with Krita or GIMP since I don't have CSP. I think this helps :>
I'm curious about the canvas size for discord, like how small does it have to be? I also have Clip Studio so it'll be a bit easier
I think my biggest sized canvas for discord is 800x800 and I was still able to upload it as a png
