To the stereo purists- remember, these are not intended to be revisions of the music content. All the levels remain true to the original, assuming one is sitting in the ideal listening position- it’s just an added sense of space in the experience. When done properly, the result is spectacular. And, as long as the Atmos mix has the artist’s blessing, as is the case with Abba, there’s little to argue with. Unfortunately there are some poorly executed and gimmicky Atmos mixes out there that tend to ruin people’s overall impression of Atmos, but as Atmos gains in popularity, mix engineers are learning how to do it right, and there are far fewer duds coming out.

Although I think the originals are masterpieces on their own, it's great to hear these mixes to indeed appreciate the complexity of the ABBA sound.

Every time I listen to an ABBA song, it’s like a revelation to me, and these Dolby Atmos mixes are no different. My biggest impression came when I listened to the mix for “Gimme Gimme Gimme.” Most people associate the song with a certain sense of campiness, even queerness and hedonism but on this mix, I felt both drama and tension like I never felt before. The synth strings go higher and higher as the now-famous line from Benny plays on, and as we approach the chorus. Then, once we get to the actual chorus, the synth goes into this weird road where it almost sounds like an off-key accordion. In it of itself, it doesn’t work…but when you add it with the bass line, the guitar riffs, it fits like a glove. Talking about the bass line, the work of the late Rutger Gunnarsson is so evidently funky, and deserving of praise by just about any self respecting musician. The wall of sound here is truly amazing…and I can’t wait to have every single ABBA song mixed this way!
This was a fascinating video. I love discovering little nuisances in the music that I never noticed before after years of listening to their songs. The reason why it may sound a little weird (which it actually does in a few instances) is probably because they had to use stem splitting in order to access some of the tracks. The reason for that is that they needed to bounce down tracks in order to free up tracks to make additional overdubs. As far as I know none of their studios had more than one tape recorder (unlike Abbey Road), so if they needed more channels they had to bounce down existing tracks. Dolby Atmos requires Blu-ray Disc as a physical medium, it cannot be encoded on CD, DVD, LP or other. It is most often streamed on various music services. It’s best listened to on a proper multi-speaker “home theater”-type system, complete with overhead speakers. It can sound absolutely spectacular. It degrades from there unfortunately, but you can still get some of the effect on lesser implementations of Atmos (headphones can be surprisingly convincing by utilizing binaural/HRTF processing). Headphones are ideal since there’s nothing extra to purchase in order to experience it.

@@toby9999 true. I’m lucky to have a full Atmos 11-speaker/2-subwoofer system in my place. Surround sound has been a big deal to me since I was a teen and found an old used quadraphonic LP of Dark Side of the Moon, and a discarded quad receiver. Atmos is light years beyond that, and note that the headphone virtualization via Apple Music can get you at least half the way there, and it works with any headphones.
Thanks for this video and letting us hear the indiviual tracks. Its very intresting to hear the work that went into the music. As a musician I hate music in atmos. For films and games yes, music no. Atmos to music is like 3D to movies. Music is about voices and instruments coming together. In a concert most music is mono so everyone can get a good balance. In atmos you would have to sit in a small sweet spot and not move to hear a good mix. As for most music in atmos on headphones it is a bad fix and makes it sound worse.
The Atmos mix of Waterloo sounds like crap. It has all sorts of phasing issues. GimmeX3 on the other hand sounds excellent. I suspect AI was used to isolate tracks on Waterloo whereas the multitrack tape was used when remixing GimmeX3.
@@123billydog He sure does, _but_ not all multitracks are still available. You see, they were always short on channels on the tapes, so in order to make additional overdubs the already recorded channels had to be bounced down to only one or two tracks, hence making the original tracks available for new overdubs. Tretow has been speaking about that in a number of interviews. Waterloo was recorded on a single 8-track recorder, so in order to fit everything they were bouncing down a lot. But to be able to remix bounced down tracks an AI stem splitter must be used. It sounds weird in isolation, but perfectly normal in context.
You have to realize that he’s focusing on small isolated elements of the entire mix for the sake of musical archeology. They’re not meant to sound good on their own. Only when played in context does it sound correct.

Frankly, despite Abba Gold being mentioned, I was surprised they didn’t use the recent Singles 50 Years compilation as a showcased selection of Atmos mixes…
I can't wait for the Dolby Atmos Mix of 'One of Us' if we get one, mainly for Frida's Vocals.
I don’t hear any Frida on “One Of Us”
@@OPUS10-GUY One Of Us is an Agnetha lead but it's not completely sung by Agnetha alone...
@@OPUS10-GUY Vocalwise, Frida puts the ''make up" in the backing vocals in OOU.I would say kinda similar distinguishing way happens in i.e. let's say 'My Love My Life" or STMF.
@@OPUS10-GUY If you listen to the vocals to the song isolated on UA-cam, I think you can hear them on the Chorus. At least I think it's Frida in the Harmonie.
Magnifique vidéo ❤ . Merci Bobby
GGG!Genius!
Fantastic vídeo!👏👏👏👏
Okay but i cannot hear the difference and im listening on bluetooth earbuds (B.5.4) with Apple Music lossless
You need to enable Atmos. The Lossless versions are strictly stereo.
O que dizer ? Apenas maravilhoso só gostaria de voltar no tempo❤😊Abraços Bobby
Wow shows how can add more layers and levels. Their music is so technically brilliant can discover more and more, no wonder you get something more and new every time you listen. Utilising the extra depth of Dolby Atmos is like a whole new set of versions of al their music, yet all original and what they did in the studios, would be amazing to have all their albums done with Dolby Atmos versions
Gimme gimme sounds good but not sure if I like Waterloo. I would love to hear voulez vous and lay all your love me
Can you write the Channel here, where I can listen to the Atmossongs or Post The Link please… thank you so much

Search for: ABBA - Waterloo (50th Anniversary Dolby Atmos Mix) and ABBA - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) - 45th Anniversary Atmos Mix (Deconstructed).
Please release them on CD as well, I have a great CD surround sound system that would make this sound like a symphony hall if I could get those mixes
On a Blu-ray disc.
@@Lungdum perfect as soon as they release all the albums I’m getting every single one
Atmos can’t be encoded on to a CD, only Blu-Ray disc.
@BeefyMon plus, we'd need an atmos system to get full effect. That's not a trivial thing.
There's some weird dissonance in those offbeats on Gimme x3. 😮
The Atmos mix of Waterloo sounds like crap. It has all sorts of phasing issues. GimmeX3 on the other hand sounds excellent. I suspect AI was used to isolate tracks on Waterloo whereas the multitrack tape was used when remixing GimmeX3.
I think they both use AI I can hear bit noise
No Ai, Berhard Lohr who has worked with Benny for years has full access to the original ABBA recordings.
It sounds weird in isolation, but perfectly normal in context.
this is making love as it should be
Also, those aren't guitar riffs -- that's the bass playing high.
1st?!
It would seem so.
I'd like the little tape-flicker sounds to be removed from Move On.
Interesting. Hard to judge on a non-Atmos system, but Waterloo sounds better of the two.
Waterloo not so good, gimmi gimmi great!
Not keen on this at all. Abba songs are masterpieces the way they are, don’t mess with classics. These sound awful.
You have to realize that he’s focusing on small isolated elements of the entire mix for the sake of musical archeology. They’re not meant to sound good on their own. Only when played in context does it sound correct.
No, it sounds amazing! Bernard Löhr is a world-class engineer, who sure knows what he's doing.
What you are referring to are isolated tracks, presented for educational purposes; they are obviously not intended to be heard that way, without context.
