    My live are fish now for sale at FishPortals.com!
    🔨 Why I broke down my fish tank
    About 8 months ago I added 2 assassin snails into my snail infested tank in hopes of clearing them out, but unfortunately, they didn’t get the job done completely.
    About five months in, the assassin snails self-destructed, leaving behind the biggest ramshorn snails.
    At first I thought it was an issue with the water quality, but then I realized the assassin snails may have just had too large of a buffet and over ate since the tank was still teeming with life (detritus worms, copepods, and ramshorn snails).
    I decided to just tear down the tank since there were too many pests, what should I add now? :)
    Live fish available May 1st (10 am pst) at FishPortals.com! 🐠

    I'm a keeper of assassin snails and I noticed that the tank you are keeping them in is pretty small. They are extremely sensitive to changes in the water and temperature, which make them even more vulnerable if they're in a nano tank. Sadly they become lethargic and eat less when stressed out, and can die early as a result. Usually the internet suggests you can fit one in per 5 gallons, but I would suggest having a minimum of 15 gallons to offset any large changes done by doing a water change. Any less you are going to want to be very careful when adding in new water!

      I had an infestation of feeder snails in my 35 gallon. I put 2 assassin snails in and a week later I had double the amount of feeders. I bought and added 6 more assassin snails and waited another week. By this time there was so many snails and so many eggs, I removed my fish and 100 percent changed scrubbed and boiled everything and started over.

    Those little white worms are called detritus worms and they are common but harmless segmented worms. Many aquarists would rather not have any worms in their tanks, but detritus worms are actually a great member of your tank’s clean-up crew. These tiny annelid worms work hard to break down waste which helps keep the tank clean and the water quality high.

    • @ethanroberts2893
      @ethanroberts2893 Рік тому +209

      Detritus worms are longer, those are straight up nematodes, they do about the same thing as detritus worms and are harmless for the most part however , nematodes swim in an s shape like in the video and are smaller, they live in my 6 gal and it is gross. 😢

      I'm pretty sure those aren't detritus worms cause I have detritus worms in my tanks and they don't look like that.
      Detritus worms are thinner and smaller than that, idk what worm that is but I hope I don't get it cause I already have 2 different types of worms in my snail tank and detritus worms in my Betta tank. I can barely tolerate those worms, I can only tolerate them cause I can barely see them but if that worm spawned in my tank then I'm getting rid of everything with no hesitation.
      I can't get rid of em. I tried deep cleaning and got rid of my Betta's previous tank but they still appeared.
      And for my snail tank. Well. That's another story.
      Things keep spawning in there like some Minecraft biome or some thing.
      It is for mystery snails but then these small snails appeared out of no where and then detritus worms and another type of worm spawned in my brand new tank but the weirdest thing I saw in my snail tank has to be a ghost shrimp. . .I DIDNT EVEN PUT ONE IN THERE LET ALONE KEEP ONE AS A PET NOR DID I BUY ONE!!
      It appeared out of nowhere. Idk where it is now but it was pretty weird, it did give me a heart attack though so fun times am I right? :)

They actually are very very beneficial for your tank, they eat the terrible stuff at the bottom of the tank or where clumped up material is. They eat dead plants and dead fish material. Living material, they break it down. They only become a lot though when’s theirs excess food in the tank or excess dead plant material.

    The snail issue could be seen as an indicator that you are over feeding the tank. The snail colony can only support itself so if you limit your feeding and continue that for a couple months, the snail population would regulate itself to that level of food.
    Copepods and detritus worm are amazing food for the fish.
    Personally, you could have just leave the tank and limit your feeding and the tank would have been perfect

However, in one study I read that they can attack smaller snails of their own species if they are very hungry and do not sense other food around. I remember the time when my mother found a painted turtle on the side of the road. Keep in mind it was no bigger than a quarter, so she brought it home, I named him Lary and kept him for about a year. I liked giving him small dried shrimp and dead worms. After that year, my family decided he couldn't be a part of our family anymore, so we put him in a lake where we were sure there were many insects. That night, my dad was bringing down the tank and dropped it on the floor. Luckily, it was our kitchen floor! Once he dropped it, fat black worms that were small were wriggling on the ground, crawling everywhere there were A LOT. Before I released my turtle, I noticed he would hide under a rock and wasn't eating as much. Can someone let me know if this behavior was because of those worms, and what are the worms?

    • @Just1Nora
      @Just1Nora Рік тому +10

      They're probably a type of parasitic worm that often infests invertibrates, arthropods, and turtles. Horsehair worms. They're related to nematode worms. They leave the host as they mature. They aren't harmful to humans in any life stage, but they're creepy looking for sure!
      Your little turtle buddy probably had vitamin A deficiency. Turtles need UV B to properly absorb vitamin A. If y'all kept him in the basement without a uv b basking lamp then that was probably the problem. It's a common problem with captive turtles. Your mom did the right thing by setting your turtle friend free.

    • @_0rC4.
      @_0rC4. Рік тому +6

      @Just1Nora thank you, but this wasn't the case of the lamp. We kept him in a fish tank located on a sturdy desk between our living room and dining room . The fish tank was rectangular and large and provided a UVB light and a supplemental heat light. But your information about the parasite has been very helpful, thank you.

    • @Just1Nora
      @Just1Nora Рік тому +5

      @Erica Oh, that's good to hear! Unfortunately, lots of people don't know about the uv b and the poor turtles get deformities due to the missing vitamin. Glad that was not the case. Horsehair worms are usually long and thin, hence the name, so they might have been leaches or some other parasitic worm. I'd suspect parasites for a lethargic turtle unless it got an intestinal blockage, but that's a pretty rapid decline if it happens. You'd know. I can't imagine a turtle in a nice warm tank trying to brumate either.
      I hope that helped. I know it seems a bit vague, but without seeing it there are multiple things that could have happened.
      It's sad to have to re-release an animal that you care for, but if they'll be happier in the wild and weren't captive bred, then releasing them is often the best option.

      Duck weed is so cool! I wrote a paper for college about urban forestry. I hope to use it to create a plan of implementation for my city. A lot of cities have regulations against reusing waste water. But you can use duck weed to purify and cleanse the water. I think that's so cool.

      @wifeofsauron1658 Рік тому

      @Cara Englishby yes but in the same way, anything is invasive somewhere. With urban forestry, you would be using duckweed to purify vast of black and grey water to be recycled for the plants so you don't waste water needed elsewhere. Especially in places like where I live in a desert where water can be scarce. I also love that it eliminates us creating waste water and then dumping it elsewhere to be natures problem. Because I live in a desert we don't have ponds and such where duckweed could spread. So we don't run the risk of it choking out other plants here. However, duckweed isn't the only plant that does this. There are many other water plants that purify water that can be used depending on the area.

    If you like keeping fish, keep yoyo loaches and or some chain loaches, they will remove or prevent any snail infestation in any of your tanks. Just don't overfeed them as they will opt for pellet or easy to access food. If you leave them with just snails, your problem will be eliminated quite quickly. And no, don't just add them to get rid of the problem. Make sure to keep them around as members of your fish family even afterwards.

Sadly they also assassinated our two apple snails, I didn't expect it because they were much bigger, but I guess the assassins found a way. After they basically became our only snails, they started reproducing rapidly, not too long ago we collected and gave most of them away. When it comes to survival animals are also aware of how survival works, so when they see young ones, they prefer not to kill them (if they are food), that leaves you with the assassins leaving children alive, not following the path of anakin.
    I heard once that if you get snails in your tank that tank is practically screwed.
