    Ok.... so question.
I'm just accumulating knowledge at this point about this sport and haven't actually done it yet. We have a new axe bar opening in my area soon.
And it's something I want to do.
Anyway, my question is whats the deal with the big axe? Is that something you can pull out at a certain time? Like its worth more points or something? Obviously I would assume its harder to throw and it seems like a bigger distance.
Could you explain that to me please?

Are tomahawks legal for NATF competitions? I can't find any details in the handbook regarding that particular distinction.

As far as i'm concerned any axe is legal as long as it falls within the NATF guidlines for axe specs. www.nationalaxe.com/51-standard-axe-hatchet-specifications.html and big axe www.nationalaxe.com/52-big-axe-specifications.html

We actually both mounted our axes ourselves. We found the heads on ebay and then got the handles from househandle.com. In this video I am using the Plumb Carpenters Hatchet and Mike is using the Plumb Victory Rafting Hatchet. I go over both of them in our top 5 throwing axes video. Hunting for a head on ebay can be fun. Just make sure the blade is full and that it is the right weight. Enjoy!

Do you specifically have to throw right handed? I'm left handed?

I have a buddy who throws left handed, shouldn't make a difference

What kind of sense would that make?

It won't make a difference in technique, really. You might reverse your stance RE: what is your leading foot and trailing foot, but generally, nope, throwing axes left-handed, right-handed, ambi, underhanded, it doesn't matter.
