    I don't know about you, but I'm seeing the 'crop deaths' argument come up way too often recently, potentially fuelled by Joe Rogan frequently bringing up 'facts' about how vegans are killing more animals than non-vegans. So I think it's time to delve into this 'ultimate argument' against veganism and answer the hard question, are we responsible for killing more animals during crop production? All sources at the bottom of the description.

      So is E..d or maybe just deceitful - when he talks about percentages of soy/corn for animal feed he misses the part where itnearly ALWAYS has multiple uses. With Soy - soy oil for humans is the money making gold - and the left overs are used as animal feed. Lots of examples of this with all the different crops, usually it has a profitable human use first and the animals are fed the remaining husks and less profitable parts.

    • @NotMe-vy7bb
      @NotMe-vy7bb 3 роки тому +21

      @@soypusher5567 You non vegans don't think we research into that? From official pricing soy oil is worth roughly $1100 per metric tonne, soymeal on the other hand is worth in the quality that most farmers buy, roughly $600 per metric tonne. However from soybean plantations approximately 80% is soymeal and 20% is oil. So in the quantities produced the soymeal accounts for roughly 2/3 of revenue and therefore is the more profitable. So the argument that this is just a byproduct of the oil industry is a lie as the majority of soymeal is produced with the desire for soymeal rather than extras from soy oil

    • @FloydFreud
      @FloydFreud 3 роки тому +8

      @@soypusher5567, what @Not Me said, and furthermore, there are only a few uses where soy oil is indispensable, in most cases it's preferred only because of price, and the price is low because it's a byproduct of meal production. @@soypusher5567 no the leftovers aren't used for animal feed, the bulk of soy is used for animal feed. • @syzyphyz
      @syzyphyz 3 роки тому +10

      @@soypusher5567 It's a moot point anyways, you'll always have to feed animals something, it's basic earth science and energy levels, the fact is you cannot feed everyone on the planet a meat based diet without feeding the animals, and to do this without factory farming is impossible without taking up insane amounts of land and this isn't even taking into consideration the pollution these animals cause in terms of sewage and methane emissions (which is worse than CO2).

      Ed strawmanned the argument at 0:45 because the clip was specifically about hunting. A wild boar, deer, etc. do not eat farmed grains so a hunter is not responsible for any crop deaths. So it is very possible that a hunter is responsible for fewer deaths than a vegan. Of course a lot of hunters (e.g. Rogan) use this as an excuse to justify gluttonous consumption from animal agriculture but that only reflects their poor character and lack of self discipline.

    • @TheOnlyTalia
      @TheOnlyTalia 3 роки тому +38

      no, nugent and rogan are pitching the argument as hunting vs veganism, as if factory farming isn't responsible for the overwhelming majority of animal deaths. hunting is not sustainable at all if omnivores converted to that rather than factory farming. rogan's podcast is full of bad faith arguments.

    • @mistahkurtz2351
      @mistahkurtz2351 3 роки тому +8

      @@TheOnlyTalia Right, but they are not telling other people to adopt a hunting lifestyle -- as you point out it is not viable for the current meat consumption to be provided by hunting. Also, most people (e.g. myself) have no interest in hunting. I think Rogan, Nugent, etc. are more annoyed by the "preachiness" of vegans claiming they have some moral high ground. However, this is not true since, theoretically there could be a hunter who survives on precisely three deer per year thus is responsible for fewer deaths than an average vegan.

    • @mistahkurtz2351
      @mistahkurtz2351 3 роки тому +4

      @@TheOnlyTalia Also, for what it's worth, I've seen a couple of clips where Rogan sounds pretty opposed to factory farms and slaughterhouses. I just think he does not have the self discipline to be 100% hunter or 100% vegan. So he uses the "amorality" of hunting as an excuse for his gluttonous habits, e.g. eating fast food.

      @@mistahkurtz2351 That's a bad faith argument again, how about instead of comparing a non industrialized hunter with an industrialized vegan, compare a non industrialized hunter to a non industrialized vegan who grows their own food. The vegan would result in not killing any animals and still have the moral high ground. Most wont do either as both are a harder lifestyle to adhere to and most don't have the means to do it either. Still not a solution to the problem, just excuses. Next...

It's flat out exhausting to see so many of my fellow human beings so willingly and blatantly ignore the truth out of greed and self-affirmation. It's like nobody gives a shit, like nobody will make the slightest self-sacrifice for a better future, like people only care about being right, about wining the argument and feeling good all of the time; having the "freedom" to do whatever you want no matter the victim (horribly, ironically, eventually, themselves). It seems like there is a blanket of consumerist arrogance that has enveloped us all - "don't tell me what to do" , is the only principle anyone cares about. I honestly think that vegan activists should do more research.
      The whole thing about it being more eco friendly is false. 2 percent of a cows diet is edible by humans. Most of the water being used is grey water (rain water) and the land being used is useless to crop farmers because of the rocky terrain and the slopes that are to steal to grow anything.
      You say that plants don’t feel pain which is technically true since they lack a functioning brain but the do in fact let out screeching noises when in distress, they let out a chemical as a distress call. Not to mention that they do develop bonds with other plants. They can communicate with plants that are close to them and even show a bond when the other plants are moved far away.
      There has also been no scientific proof that a vegan diet is healthier then a normal one. It has been seen that vegans are more likely to have a stroke but less likely to have certain heart diseases.
      I personally respect your lifestyle choices but I don’t see why you guys act like you are better then us.

      Except his arguments are bullshit. I dont feel like spending an hour picking out every issue in the video but a few stick out to me early on. He called Chris a quack and conveniently leaves out a key detail in the study he was reading and its context. Yes you can grow more protein with soy and corn... but that is BECAUSE most of that protein is being used as cattle feed. Cows QUADRUPLE the protein gains from sources like corn. To get as much protein as a cow obtains from eating corn we would need to grow 4x the amount of corn.
      Also less land is used directly for cattle feed than it is for human consumption. I'm not sure what bullshit statistic he is citing. I guess land that ends up making its way INTO cattle feed? Why in this entire video did he also conveniently leave out the arguments from the people who in the same video he's "debunking" like how most cattle feed is made from parts of planted food which is inedible to humans. Most of the food that cattle actually gets isn't from land designated specifically for cattle field. Rather we reuse a lot of waste products either from land used for human feed or for other purposes (somewhere in the line of manufacturing) that can be recycled by feeding it to cattle.
      Its waste product.
      But I mean believe your vegan friend. Too bad its all BS.

These animals are siting crammed, suffering from heat strokes, dehydrated, hungry. I once crammed with 5 friends in the back of a car for a 20 min ride and i was so sick and almost having panic attacks. Those animals don’t have any idea what’s happening to them, they must be overwhelmed by panic.

    • @luckyyuri
      @luckyyuri 3 роки тому +4

      @Novus Ordo A few years ago i’ve read a short sci-fi story on a blog and although i didn’t like the subject i nevertheless keep thinking about it lately. In it our world was a simulation made by future human civilization, somewhere in the year 3000 or 5000 i can’t remember. They had immense technological power, every individual was a small god able to do and experience a fantastic number of things, but this was also their biggest problem. You can’t just allow anyone access to immense technological power because they could become a threat to society. So their solution was creating a huge simulation in which people were borne and lived believing they live in the real world, doing whatever is in their nature, showing their "true face" as it were. Those who proved themselves within the simulation that they were caring, responsible, altruistic persons, eventually died within the simulation and they were pulled out in the real world in the body of their perfectly healthy teenage self. Those who didn’t respect life, didn’t cooperate with other people, who didn’t engage in social matters, were left to die in the simulation without granting them the knowledge of the real world and the option to take part. The sim world was chosen to recreate the 21Century because this was exactly the historical period where there was a lot of knowledge and access to information, so people could learn from history, experience past ideas and ways of life in the same time with future ideas and ways of life, develop a rich personality (which was valuable for the outside world), but in the same time wasn’t yet offering too much knowledge of simulation technology and other things. This is how that future society got all its members, this is how they were "schooled" and this is how they were selected without any risk of letting any savage, irresponsible or irreverent individuals in the real world. Once out they got to live till about 300 years in good health.
      I personally hate the idea of simulation, this notion is an abomination, but this story haunts me and i definitely like their motivation for creating a simulated world. If this were true, there’s at least one good thing: people like you won’t ever get out.

      It’s a nice story, but it quickly made me uncomfortable as I thought about it.
      My main problem with it is, what about the people who are born into a life in which they have virtually no agency? The children who die of hunger or abuse. The people who are trafficked into slavery and never get out, never getting a chance to exercise their own free will, let alone their morality. And those born with severe developmental problems, or debilitating mental disorders. Where would they fit in such a simulation?
      They don’t get the chance to develop, find or prove their character, so if they’re not the ones being tested, would they have to be some sort of AI? That’s what makes me really uncomfortable with this idea. All in all this whole thing is paradise reimagined for technocrats. A fun idea to explore sure, but it has many of the same problems of the original paradise, and some new ones too.

    • @luckyyuri
      @luckyyuri 3 роки тому +1

      @@raniaa2592 Rania, it’s always nice to encounter thoughtful and caring people like you. I think your insight is spot on on every account.
      This particular description of a simulated world is indeed paradise reimagined by a technological generation. Sharing the story cannot bring much harm though. Just like the concept of paradise, it tethers the psyche to some wonderful thing to come if you work to overcome your bad nature, and work for the common good of all beings. The only problem i see with sharing the religious paradise/hell story is that people’s unconscious might get the idea that "good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell *anyway,* so why do any work to change this fleeting earthly life for the better"-this attitude contributes to maintaining hell right here on earth. As for the concept of paradise in itself, yes, it has a number of big problems.
      Yet, the simulation scenario depicts a world that’s different then the one that’s under heaven. As you’ve said, not all creatures within it must be conscious. And as much as i hate to say it, i’d be incredibly relieved if i’d find out that all those people with severe developmental problems or mental disorders, and all the farmed animals, were something akin unconscious NPC’s. But i don’t believe it-we don’t have any evidence to believe in such a simulation, we don’t have any way to know if all people within such a simulation would be conscious or not, *and it would be a grave mistake to think less of others based on a story.*
      The world i’d like to live in is one similar to that depicted by a british philosopher when he was asked how the year 3000 will look like (*). That’s the paradise i dream of. I agree with everything he’s saying there, although i think that he ignores one important thing, an immensely valuable aspect for any society-maintaining a rich eclectic mix of individual personalities. In a perfect peaceful society you can’t nurture sensible, mature, complex and subtle minds. Most poets, musicians and great people of all kinds emerged out of a dynamic tension between heaven and hell. And as far as i can imagine there’s no way for a future society to directly design a human being. They’d have to safely recreate the optimal conditions for human development to happen naturally, and in my opinion there aren’t any better conditions than the early 21Century.
      This changes nothing, even if we live in a simulation and this happens to be its purpose, you cannot take this knowledge to change how you live your life. Also, the simulation scenario doesn’t change anything for the trillion Darwinian beings that lived in the real actual history of this planet. The only people who would benefit if it’s true, is us.

    Actually, being a fruitarian is the best way to limit death. The fruits of a plant are the only thing nature gives up willingly (without resistance (when ripe)) for consumption. Many seeds spread and propagate through the consumption and digestive breakdown of them. Every species on earth, both plant and animal, gives resistance to death. Only the fruits of a plant willingly give themselves up for consumption. That being said, I do agree a plant-based diet reduces the overall plant and animal deaths as opposed to any other diet aside from fruitarian. To improve the stats even more it is important to look at how we grow our food and put serious effort into much more sustainable practices. This can be said towards the farming of animals and their feed as well.
    No, I'm not a fruitarian, but I do view it as the ideal diet.

    An Aussie here. 12 years ago I moved out to country Victoria. An area of poor pastureland (i.e. depleted soils and just whatever grasses that had self-sown) that had been substantially used for grazing (as well as gold fossicking during the gold rush era). So no specific crops or plant industry in the area at all. The move meant that our various sticks of furniture and knick knacks went into a storage facility on the outskirts of the town for about a year. The storage was weatherproof, but had roller door access. During that time in storage, there had been both a locust plague and a mouse plague. When I was getting the items out of storage at the end of that time, the smell from the mouse urine was very strong and there were considerable numbers of bodies of both locusts and mice. The locusts had found their way in but couldn't figure out how to get out again, and just starved to death. The mice had made themselves a nice warm home, but there was no nearby source of food or water for them either. They also would have died from starvation.
    Others in the area complained of losses from both plagues, but they had animal feed stored at their properties which the plague critters were eating into.
    Left to it's own, nature seems to be quite good at self-regulating. It's only when mankind plays with the environment that all the balances are lost. I seriously believe everybody should be more involved in a small is beautiful mindset with their food needs. Growing more of what they eat in their backyards and relying far less on the need for any huge mono-culture enterprise! Learn more about permaculture and companion planting. Lean about making environments conducive to predator bugs like mantises rather than using chemicals.

    Honey, let's point at least three things out here.
    1)The argument is to say that while you're fighting for animals lives, you should care about those too. Not demean them as less important. It's a way to point out hypocrisy.
    2)it's exactly because the rat won't know where the machine is coming from + fear that it will make the wrong decision - for example running straight ahead when it should have turned either right or left.
    3) the tails are chopped off because the pigs will start biting each others tails which will cause the wounds to get infected. It's for their health.
    Theres more I'll probably be able to point out but I unfortunately don't have time right now.
    Edit: fixing typos.

    Had this discussion with a friend yesterday. The debate kept going off on a tangent and I payed very close attention, trying to let him speak as much as possible without interrupting so I can hear what his belief system is. Always bringing it back to the original point after it going off really hammers home the point. Let the tangent happen, give your solid argument and then come back to the original point. It worked so well that he actually picked up on it and started to get really annoyed.
    At the start he disagreed with everything. In the end he admitted that he now agrees with everything that I was saying, but that my approach was really starting to piss him off. The final obstacle was hit, which was his ego. The ego is ALWAYS on the defense and hates being told it is wrong. And that's where I left the conversation. Him getting annoyed showed that his beliefs were being challenged, and at that point there is no need to continue.
    Definitely just venting off here, but my point being that it's always good to know when the conversation has to end. Any point that I ever get hung up on or couldn't remember something clearly, I always come back to Earthling Ed's EBOOK when I get home and fill in the holes of knowledge. (earthlinged.org/ebook )
    And that's the best way to strengthen your point debating skills. Have debates, but then if you feel like you failed a topic on veganism, I promise you it will be in Ed's Ebook. It covers every argument. Its gold

      Veganism is a sub optimal way of eating, did he cover that? Did he cover the fact that we evolved requiring essential amino acids and essential fatty acids to live optimally? Both sadly lacking in a poorly bio available, nutritionally thin vegan diet. I am a fully recovered cardiac arrest victim and CABG, who went clean vegan for the year afterwards and struggled and now on a ketogenic diet involving some animal foods I am off meds and my heart feels stronger since i transitioned and i am stronger in my olympic lifts and cardio routines. I have lived both lives and also understand the science behind it. Unfortunately you cannot see the right way forward for good health in my view.

    • @howiseetheworld3581

      @@JustSavageThings Well thats a great case study, but it doesn't hold much validity unfortunately.
      It's clear if you're saying veganism isn't the right way forward for good health you are ignorant on the topic. I don't take advice on healthy diets from people who are not professionals like me & yourself. We need that job to be done by nutritionists and dieticians. On top of that, the largest body of nutritionists and dieticians in the world - The American Dietetic Association released a peer reviewed statement saying that a vegan plant based diet is suitable for all stages of life, including pregnancy, and that humans can survive and thrive on the diet.
      As a counter argument, so many people have seen great results on a vegan diet, and reversed heart disease - and there is a lot of study's available showing this (check search engines). And for sports there are plenty of successful athletes that are fitter and stronger than you and me will ever be.
      Look online for vegan bodybuilders and powerlifters, ultra marathon runners (Game Changers on Netflix) is great start.
      Also for reliable data you need meta analysis anyway, which you haven't cited for your claims. Plus all fatty acids can be acquired from algae supplements (EPA & DHA) which are completely healthy, bio available & vegan :)

      @@howiseetheworld3581 Well that’s interesting and mildly condescending but I’ll forgive you for that.
      I am far from ignorant on the topic. I’d say health, fitness , diet and nutrition are my raison d’etre and has been for 40 years. I’ve been a vegan. I researched Veganism as I research all things I am interested in and both sides of the argument. Do you? If so I’d look up the Doctors below for an honest and alternative and scientific approach to health and nutrition.
      Absolutely agree with going to professionals who cite ‘randomised control trials’ not epidemiological studies that are a shade above useless. I follow Dr Paul Mason, Dr Tim Noakes Dr Stephen Finley amongst others who I feel are honest and have real time examples in patients and regularly produce papers to back up their science.
      Dr Paul Mason also studies older papers that a lot of our modern misconceptions are derived from.
      What meta analysis have you produced to back up your claims?
      The American Dietetic Association!
      I would be interested to know what peers reviewed it and what tests they based their findings on
      and over what period of time. To be honest if I was in the US I would be happy to get everyone off the standard American diet with a vegan diet! Anything is better than that.
      However Veganism is not a one size fits all diet.
      Many people are sensitive to oxolates and lectins in plants and their health improves when they go on a non vegan ketogenic diet.
      For example, Psoriasis, eczema leaky gut, bloating and inflammation clears up.
      Red meat is the superfood that has everything in it including Omega 3 and vitamin C. I haven’t heard of anyone being allergic to meat.
      It is the most bio available nutritious food along with eggs that have the essentials for life.
      The nutrition in vegetables is diluted and is not as readily absorbed.
      Seed and vegetable oils are not stable at high temperatures and at normal temperatures they oxidise quickly (go off) without letting us know (animal foods smell when they are off and we don’t eat them). This is dangerous to health as you may be able to work out. They also do not have a healthy fat profile and are in fact bad for health at the best of times. Saturated fat on the other hand is not bad for health and have been proven to be good for health.
      More and more studies are coming out proving that we have all been duped since the early 80s when certain Doctors told everyone to eat less saturated fat and it was wholesale replaced by carbohydrates(a non essential macro!) and nuts seed/vegetable oils because Doctor’s on the whole no nothing of nutrition and diet. The demise of US/global health began their.
      Plants do not like being eaten and The anti nutrients inhibit the absorption of nutrients from other foods if eaten together. Beans being one. Tests have been done.
      As for algae based omegas
      See this link to a paper so don’t be so confident on it being completely healthy.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5387034/
      Of course you can live on a vegan diet but I say not in optimal health.
      If a person comes to Veganism having spent their lives on the standard American/western diet of course they are going to feel and look better by virtue of the fact that they have removed all of the crap from their diet. They’d feel better if they fasted for 24 hours too for the same reason amongst others.
      On a personal level. I’ve trained for 40 years and competed to a high standard in sports. Being strong is genetic in large part.
      I’ve watch Game changers and I wouldn’t attribute someone being strong to veganism. They were strong before and in fact I would say if they came off a vegan diet and added animal products like eggs and red meats they would be even stronger.
      I am naturally strong in my Olympic and compound lifts but my strength increased when I came off the vegan diet along with lean body mass, low body fat and no bloating. My inflamed knees got better.
      Another study showed that patients who had major surgeries healed quicker on a carnivore diet than a vegan diet.
      While I don’t think veganism is necessarily a bad diet I don’t think it is a diet that will provide optimal health. I think without dangerous nuts and seeds oils a purely natural vegetable based diet is better than most alternatives but requires supplementation.
      So good luck with your health, watch your triglycerides levels, nuts and seed oils and your Vit K, iron and B12 ;)

    Combines cut and pull in the grain stalks to remove the grain.
    Hay and silage is just cut and the grass is left intact (usually cut prior to any grains forming on the stalks). Hay is left to dry before collection and baling and silage is collected immediately after harvest.
    So combines crush any life on the stalks, whereas the cutting of grass is left more or less intact.

    Aside from all the debunking already mentioned, why do meat-eaters try to use this argument against plant-agriculture as if they don't also eat the plants and crops they're saying kills a ton of animals *as well as* all the animals killed for the meat they consume? So they're responsible for twice as many deaths if not more from eating both.

      Plants eat meat. Sustenance is exchange of life force. You can only defer some animal fat in your diet and kid yourself you are out of the food chain for so long before you are metabolically self cannibalizing. More and more vegans who came to this conclusion and did their research can give it to you if you prefer their point of view. They can cite the misinformation he cranks out “going deeper”. Not to mention the plant based diet supports the Monsanto travesty to the earth, seed destruction and manipulation of plant DNA.

      @C. Ó Dubhlaoich Hello, as a vegan I only supplement on vitamin D3 (which is actually necessary for many people regardless of whether or not they eat animal products). You can get B12 in sea weeds, spirulina or a supplement. So it's only two supplements tops; the remaining nutrients are rather vast within plants. How many pills do you think many meat eaters have to take (especially as they get old)? you're joking if you think vegans supplement more than non vegans.
      Your comment immediately tells me you have no knowledge of nutrition, or the vegan population in today's date. Please do some research before embarrassing yourself publicly.

    As a rancher and farmer it was a good watch.Great points made. but a lot of these procedures regarding cattle have reasons for which they are done. Dehorning is only done for the safety of the rest of the cattle, also do to deformation of their horns, or the horn itself growing with a curve that causes the horn to stab the animal. As far as impregnating animals, thats done naturally unless its done by artificial insemination which isn't forceful, cows aren't kicking and trying to escape. Branding is done to prevent theft, tails are never chopped off though. It's usually dogs that have their tails chopped off. Calves aren't taken from their mothers either, weaning of calves happen after year, if you watch the procedure it happens on its own, sometimes cows themselves will neglect the calve all together. will refuse to feed calves and attend to calves which we then bottle feed calves. I have never heard or seen anyone cut livestock throat, thats extreme. they are shot in a position that causes instant death. also as a farmer I grow corn and wheat and have to spray to kill all insects, mice, birds, any rodent. and constantly hunt for boar, rabbit, and squirrels. as far animals having a chance to escape, they really don't they don't stand a chance to be honest. No attack or hate towards vegans, its a free world.

    You are a blessing to this world, brother. Thanks for clearing up confusion and helping others to see the truth. It is obvious that veganism is more kind, especially if you do it all yourself! Working on my property to be completely self sufficient. Then, my girlfriend works at a local natural food store where I can find anything I cant grow, right near home:). A simple way to not even feed into this energy is to always know who is creating your food and what methods they use to deal with rodents and such(as spoke of in this video). For me on my property I just build raised beds with mesh bottoms to keep those cute little guys out. (Honestly, in a a natural field most get eaten by snakes and birds). They barely eat enough to make a 5% crop damage overall. So in summary, you can feed rodents and add to the natural ecosystem in your area by being self sufficient. Love you guys!!! Stay beautiful:)

    I have been working in small scale plant agriculture for a few years, now transitioning to more permaculture driven practices, but one interesting thing I have noticed with vole and mouse pressure on crops in the field and hoop houses is when the mothers are building their nests and trying find safe places to raise their children they will usually be in the beds and places we might need to broad fork or lightly till so trying to remove the nests with the babies in them can be tricky without killing the babies, and just moving them yourself will most definitely end up with them dying another way, so I actually just uncover the first couple of layers of the nest to lightly exposed them and show our presence without* touching the babies. I will continue my work in another area to give the mother some time to come back and know she can move them and they will move their babies somewhere else (mostly likely within 50 ft), but still giving me open space to lightly work the beds without majorly disturbing them or outright killing them.

    having lived in an agricultural central european country that focuses on milk production, fact is that fields are mowed 4 times per year. the hay is put in the barns for winter. mowing fields causes death to animals, and it is my observation that voles are the number one animal that die, but other animals too. For example, I have also seen deer-kits being killed. clearly, it is not only soy-bean fields that are harvested. in fact, for most crops for human consumption, the harvest is once a year. for cattle, it is four time, resulting in four times as many deaths to animals as for crops for human consumption. the argument that harvesting for human consumption kills, falls flat.
