- Bette Davis talks about Joan Crawford and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" on "The Jack Paar Program", originally aired on November 16, 1962.
Here we are, 60 years later, and this movie is getting the recognition it deserves... absolutely fantastic, groundbreaking in its use of female leads of a certain age... Saw it again the other day on TCM. My 87 year old mother saw it for the first time and loved it.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Just watched that movie two days ago for the first time and WOW, loved it! Trying to watch more Bette Davis and Joan Crawford movies now. ❤
She nailed it. "You are only as good as your last film in Hollywood and if your last film was a moneymaker - you are a potential moneymaker" She sure didn't fool herself.
She looks so gorgeous here! Holy crap. And her outfit is to die for. Such a fascinating and unique woman.
Bette Davis was probably such a fun lady to hang around with. She's funny, classy and her reputation as a bad ass makes me love her even more.
at the end of the day,it is said she hung out with the crew smoking and drinking acouple.
She seems real,
unpretentious ...
She definitely is the total opposite as Joan. And your comment is spot on.
I don't know about that, she strikes me as diificult if she wasn't heard or didn't get her own way.
And she LOVED the gays!!
Four years ago you, Stephen, made the comment I wanted to make. Bravo! I could not agree more.
LOVE BETTE AND JOAN CRAWFORD BOTH HOLLYWOOD'S QUEENS
She's always been my favorite actress. As a woman in the 30s and 40s it was very much a man's world but she stood her ground and was determined to be taken seriously. But hard work was everything to her. Even as she aged she wanted to work. It's all she knew. And these kids that write books on their celebrity parents. You can't always believe them either. Both Bette and Joan raised their kids to work as hard as they did because nothing was going to be handed to them. They wanted them to be prepared for the real world and for this I think both their daughters rebelled.
What a pro! She did this guest spot even with laryngitis. That's a professional. And offered to return and give him another show when her voice was better.
Probably our greatest actress ever.
Ditto I agree with you
Ditto agree on both choices then #3 Vivian Leigh #4 Olivia Dehaviland #5 Ingrid Bergman
She's such a fascinating and sexy woman. Being "real" always works!
And today we have ... uh ... uh ... NOBODY. Thank God I lived to see and appreciate real talent. Today we have to settle. Not then, by God!
I love Bette Davis so much. She is and always will be my favourite Actress. Even if some of her films weren't so good she was always fantastic. A great Actress and an amazing woman. An icon.
she is so straight up. love that. no hollywood pretension
Very Aries
I Just love how Bette Davis laughs! She is so cute!😍
A purely class woman. No act, just never ending class. A genius & she epitomizes the word star to no end.
Say it for the people in the back ❤❤❤❤❤
Best ever actress
She knew how to work that dress!
Stars don’t know how to do that now
I'd never heard Bette Davis with a hoarse voice like this before. She still went on the show anyway, like the real trouper that she was. She wanted to promote Whatever Happened to Baby Jane and she knew what a good movie it is. It's the role that made me realize what a great actress she was when I was 13 and I've been a fan ever since!
She also knew that by going on, not only was it the professional way, it was also another one in the eye for Crawford.
stunningly beautiful woman
Her commitment is unreal.
Director Robert Aldrich mentioned that Bette was a trial to work with BUT admitted that when you see what she puts on the screen, it was well worth it.
Voice or no, there is only one Bette Davis. The greatest actress ever!❤
Could this woman have been any more effing amazing??
Lets admire a bit Bette Davis only and don't write bad comments about Joan Crawford! I love both women and they were beautiful on screen in their own way. Joan and Bette are legends! Some like bette more others Joan...but please such comments about Joan are not wanted on a bette davis video. I am more a Joan fan but I adore bette davis, too. JOAN was a star who became an actress and BETTE was an actress who became a star! Love both women😅
I love her so much.
Love those Bette Davis eyes!!
Love Bette Davis 😍
I love Betty davis
You might want to learn how to spell her first name correctly then.
Tilly, I agree.
I keep seeing all these fans that love her so much, but yet they do not spell her name correctly.
What an amazing actress. I absolutely adore this lady, and miss actresses like her in crazy Hollywood today.
Whatever Happen Baby Jane is A Classic!!! 2 Powerhouses on the Screen!!!😇💖🙏😇💖🙏
Anne Bancroft made The Miracle Worker the same year that Bette Davis played Baby Jane Hudson. In her movie, Anne Bancroft was dynamic, gutsy, strong and interesting; she absolutely deserved her Oscar. The thing is, Bette Davis was completely outstanding, fearless, remarkable and devastating in her movie and should have absolutely won an Oscar for her performance too. It's tricky because all these years later, we're all still talking about Bette in Baby Jane, nearly 60 years later, the film is still incredible and jaw droppingly fabulous. Not to take anything away from Anne Bancroft but I still think that Bette Davis should have gotten the award that year. AND she should have got one for Of Human Bondage too. Meaning that she should have had 4 Oscars.
Bette davis, had class ,style and beauty inside and out. Love her shes my idol
such a beautiful face
yeah you hear so much that is not true: bette was envied by joan due to bette's stage experience. joan was envied by bette because joan was beautiful. bette is so very beautiful, esp her eyes. I love susan Sarandon too..
She had Bette Davis eyes....
I love how she walks in holding a purse!
Probably because she had her cigarettes and lighter in it. People used to smoke on talk shows & during interviews.
If Joan Crawford hadn't invited Bette Davis to costar, it just wouldn't of been the same Baby Jane. What a fun movie! 📽
It is a Brilliant movie.
The best actress for ever and ever.
I love you Bette. RIP, sweet Angel. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
One of the great scary movies ever! And she’s always been classy and sassy.
Honestly the movie makes me laugh, knowing that the animosity between them is actually real and not being acted
Actors had style, class, elegance and education then!! Love Bette Davis, with or without that distinctive voice!!
Para mi la mejor actriz de todos los tiempos. Nos regalo su arte increíble. Los que disfrutanos del buen cine somos aficionados a bette Davis. Una extraordinaria mujer esposa y madre ejemplar. Nunca te olvidamos bette.
This was great, Jack.
Pretty funny clip! Love Bette Davis.
She was one tough broad.
Love Bette Davis so much.
Bette was always a trooper when it came to appearances...She even did several episodes of What's My Line with laryngitis.
Wow, a young Jonathan Winters. Really miss that man.
Rin Wesley I know! He was really tall in his youth! Wonder what happened to make him gain all that weight?
Bette is amazing XOXO 💋
If only actors could age that gracefully today.
i just love her and any snippets of interviews i enjoy.
This interview proves how funny and loose Bette was. She seemed real where Joan always seemed so fake and phony and had airs about her. Every interview Joan was acting. Bette was down to earth.
"She's got Bette Davis eye's . . ."
I wonder how many times that comment has been made on a video of the incomparable, Ms. Davis?
christopher jones I love that song
this is one classy dame
Bette BEAUTIFUL and Great Actress
love Bette
What the REAL shame is both Bette and Joan made hundreds of millions for the studios and still had to wonder if they themselves would have enough money to live into old age...those so called MEN (studio founders and heads of studios) were nothing but predatory hawks with good eyes...Bette and Joan made multi multi MILLIONS for them, and should NEVER had to struggle as they did later in life...
I remember reading an article in "People" magazine about her death just after she died. She was living in an APARTMENT in West Hollywood and her net assets in cash was just less than $500,000, which, I guess, translates into a few million today.
Bette Davis Estate Near $1 Million; 2 Daughters, Grandsons Left Out. NEW YORK - Actress Bette Davis left her daughters and grandsons out of her nearly $1- million estate, according to a will filed for probate Monday.Nov 7, 1989.The "apartment" in W. Hollywood was in a vintage, high-end building. Condos there now go for $1.5 million and up.
I just remembered another tv movie with bette where she actually did not have a home and was elderly. in the movie she had gone to the church she attended many years, and they were unable to help her. it never occurred to me the actress needed work. I assumed she was being gracious doing a tv movie.
Soren Aleksander but sometimes the studios have already pay them big enough, but still they can't keep their money
I doubt it, Buri. The studio mogols were as gods. They controlled their people completely. Is sort of like big business now.
Bette was an actress, FIRST....then a star. Joan was a star, FIRST....then an actress. Bette won 2 Oscars, but she should have won 5....her studio kept her from winning her first for 1934's "Of Human Bondage"; when Anne Baxter refused to turn down her nomination for best actress for 1950's, "All About Eve", it caused the Academy to split the vote that cost Bette Davis the win (she was heavily favored to win as she was for "What Happened to Baby Jane"). She won best actress for 1935's "Dangerous" and 1939's "Jezebel". She was the greatest actress in Hollywood of all time. She loved her craft.
Bette Davis es la mejor actriz de Hollywood de todos los tiempos.
thank you for posting it
These new actresses today cant hold a candle to her
Betty we luv u
Bette was one of the best actresses of our time. She absolutely deserved that Oscar. It was the backstabbing of the Hetta H and Joan who convinced some of the voters to vote against Bette. Such a shame.
pedro navarro It's Hedda, not Hetta...
Bitches
Hedda Hopper was a cunt ( excuse my french)
pedro navarro they were the bitches not Bette
according to what I heard, Bette would act and exaggerate her little narratives occasionally. Joan was truly an insecure beast but some of the stuff Bette said about Joan and that Oscar was proven false, as Ann Bancroft gave a statement saying that she received her Oscar from Joan at the time and place stated by Joan.. While Bette claimed she took forever to give Ann her Oscar.. And decades later, Bette was still telling her version of the story, telling Johnny Carson, "Joan took the Oscar all around the world with her when she had it.... she said she would BATHE the Oscar in the waters of.... and in also in the waters of.... And would you believe that Ms Bancroft did not receive her Oscar from Joan until 2 years later". I'm not sure of the date Bette told Johnny, whatever date she gave him, Ann Bancroft issued a statement and corrected Bette after she had been telling that exaggerated story for decades.. But Crawford definitely wanted to upstage Bette at that ceremony. Alot of Bette's claims are true.
Knowing what I know about Hollywood makeup and hair, she probably has hairpieces, but her hair looks beautiful, as does Ms Davis. Bette Davis came from the time that when you had an obligation or appearance, you showed up, unless you were in the hospital. I know she felt vindicated by the movie’s success. “WEHTBJ” spawned a new movie genre. I’ve always been team Bette.
Me too. Team Bette 1000%!!!!
LEGEND
I love thisxwiman
Bette was spontaneous and fun. If you watch Joan Crawford's interviews it's the opposite; stilted, careful, self-conscious speaking and very little wit. So different from each other.
I know..Bette David just always strikes you in interviews, what you hear about her as just "REAL"...a real person. Fun. Genuine. Tough. Sarcastic..and obviously very talented and self-confident. Joan was like a wax figure in interviews. I guess she was "pretty" to some but...that wax figure, mannequin look is not for me. I will take Bette's wit, personality and EYES :-) any day.
I'm a huge Crawford fan but I have to admit you are right on about that .I think because of Joan's lack of education she was always afraid she would say something that would give her away. Joan couldn't be spontaneous like Bette. She had to stay within the script on and off screen.
I think Joan just wanted to maintain her image (the image she had of herself in her mind) and project that to the camera.
Joan publicly said she had terrible stage fright in front of a large audience. She was a genuinely shy woman. Love both Bette and Joan.
That's why Bette had a conflict with every women she worked with. Anne Baxter, Joan Crawford, Faye Dunaway and many many more. She was so bitchy and conceited. Joan was the humble one.
Bette was a consummate professional! An actress, just not a “star” she always told it like it was, never minced words 💅🏻
2:50-3:00 after Crawford saw this interview she sent Davis a message that said something along the lines of "Please stop referring to me as an old broad." 😂
There can never be another BETTE DAVIS ! Not even remotely close. That’s all !
Ugh I love her!!
Great actress!!!!!
It’s amazing how Joan didn’t want to promote Baby Jane yet she promoted Straight Jacket. I do believe Joan campaigned against Bette to win that Oscar. People say that The Miracle Worker was good but Davis performance was memorable
Baby Jane is more than a shabby shocker.
It is about the effect that childhood has on the adult.
It is about the damage done by jealousy and guilt.
It is about the transformative power of forgiveness.
momma loved mr paar.
Her voice was deep
I Love the song, Betty Davis eyes. I don't know what it means, but it's great!
Yes it's a great song. The meaning of it is how Bette's eyes appear in the hag genre pictures she made beginning with Whatever Happened To Baby Jane and continuing with Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte and the British picture she starred in, The Nanny.
I am really enjoying Feud, even though Susan and Jessica are in no way identical to Bette and Joan. The story is still entertaining and interesting.
To expect people to be identical is ridiculous...though Sarandon particularly does a stunning job,,,,,
Identical no, but I will say Susan looks a lot like Bette and she worked hard on her mannerisms and speech patterns .
I think Jessica has some resemblance and I think Susan has some of Bette’s features but you can’t find someone identical
Yep
I'm surprised she was able to live another 27 years after this appearance until her passing in 1989 I think, with all the smoking they did back then
Sadly, Bette as so many others were heavy smokers causing much earlier illnesses & death. Shame. She was just outstanding!!
Have you seen the interview she did with Bryant Gumbel after her stroke? She was probably still smoking when they buried her
everyone smoked like mad back then and when I was born (60's). people smoked where and when they wanted. a hundred years ago heroin was sold over the counter.
She coined the phrase later made famous by Bill Clinton: "I never inhaled" during an interview with Phil Donohue.
Yes and alcohol is still legal!
i Love bethy Davis
oh shit so FEUD is legit
@Mr Pearl ...and you came to that conclusion from this 4 min video HOW..??
lucy girl go look at the show and go look the at the clips on here to match up with the real life rivalry.
lucy girl Probably because they reenacted this in the TV show.
Kia McClain Do you remember the episode? I hope I'm not behind.
I don't but in the timeline it should be after Baby Jane is released but before the Oscars. So if I had to guess either the episode with the Oscar ceremony or the one right before that. Hope that helps!
So that's the famous/infamous scene that elicited "Miss Davis, In the future kindly refrain from referring to me as an 'old broad'.
THE LAST STAR
"Those two old broads? I wouldn't give ya a dime."
People go on and on about her temperamental personality. Any woman worth her salt has Bette Davis’s spunk. How I miss performer’s like her!!
The famous feud between bette Davis and Joan Crawford
The village & holding hands reference gave this guy's sexual prefrence away. It was innocent & cute.
He was actually very homophobic and married, but I suspect the same
Bette was only 54 years old here. I'm afraid she looks much older.
I believe Bette should have won the Oscar, without however seeing the rest of the films it was up against.
Her best performance was better explaining her love for her husband in strangers on a plane.
I'd have given her four Oscar's for that role.
When Hollywood was relateable to the average person. Money always ruled but Art had ita place as well.
Joan Crawford deserved the nomination!
Child abuser and drunk.
the other lady is Gisele MacKenzie
This is right before Johnny Carson took over the Tonight Show.
Unarguably the greatest actress ever in pictures as Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer to come out of Hollywood!
Bette and Bancroft should have won.
Lmao can you imagine both of them joan and Bette at the podium.
She is by far, the greater star than Crawford!
Joan Crawford intimated Bette Davis to refrain from calling her an old broad after watching this.
who's the other woman in the group ?
X X gisele mckensie
@@joansmith6092 I love Gisele. I watched her on The Hit Parade and she was so sweet.
Didn't she have laryngitis on What's My Line?
yes, and that appearance is here on youtube - she was in the same dress.
Interesting how basic the set is... and ash trays!
in the movie bette tells joan she had a movie out that year too,but the stuidio was giving a big build up to that crap she (joan)was putting out
Did Joan and Bette do any promotional appearances together?
adelgado75 I wondered to that too, but it doesn't look like it.
No they didn't.
Joan did not want to, she missed out cause of that
Mr3D SMP sup stud
In was at a theater in Forest Hills Queens NY
when Bette made an appearance.
She brought 3 people onstage and jokingly taught them to do a Bette Davis impression.
Then we all had to look under our seats. If you found a special sticker you won a Baby Jane Doll.
All I found was lots of hard gum.
I hope Bette Never used any wire coat hangers around Joan
