I've been a casual/on and off Nightwish fan for years but Human Nature was the album that really drew me in. It spoke to me on a whole other level, not just catchy music but powerful and meaningful in a way that transcended their previous work. Yesterwynde is up there too for me but I haven't listened it through and absorbed it enough yet to give it a final ranking. Dark Passion Play was my favourite before those, so it gets #3.
In my case, the best album would be 'Oceanborn', followed by 'Wishmaster' and 'Once' as a third. I started my journey with Nightwish in 1999 and I always have loved their music. You can see by my choices that my preference goes to Tarja Turunen as a singer even if Anette & Floor are at the top of their art. As a song, 'The Pharaoh Sails to Orion' is my ultimate best...
For me, it's Century Child, Wishmaster and Oceanborn in that order. Once comes in fourth. And I listen to them since around 2000. And as much as I appreciate Floor Jansen, their best time was with Tarja Turunen. Annett Olzon was a misfit, unfortunately. She couldn't live up to the high expectations.
Wow, very different to my own ranking. I came into the band with Wishmaster as my introductory album. So it's a difficult job, some spots kind of interchangeable, but here is my top 10: 10 - Angels Fall First 9 - Oceanborn 8 - Century Cild 7 - Human :II: Nature 6 - Wishmaster 5 - Yesterwynde 4 - Dark Passion Play 3 - Once 2 - Imaginaerum 1 - Endless Forms Most Beautiful
Dark Passion Play is a monster of a record. Got unfairly bashed at the time because it was the first one without Tarja. Nowadays though it’s generally seen as a classic by most Nightwish fans.
Hi John!!! Good idea doing a Nightwing ranking of their full studio catalogue...... for what i have read or seeing the era of the band with Annette Olzen are kind of looked over (like Blaze in Maiden perhaps??). Anyhow, i'm not really familiarized with most of their releases, they have a lot of music out there. cheers and be well
Før me personally it's the other way around with the two albums with Anette as Imaginaerum is my favorite NW album all though I'll administration it's a bit dragged out but in General...it is really that good imo 😊 Thank you for another Great video 😊 However, when you pronounce Tarja it is supposed to be pronounced like "Tariya" with a rolling-on-the-tongue R 😊
@@jcrockandmetalreviews btw I would recommend listening to Anette's two latest solo album, strong and Rapture (strong is the better one) if you're intresserad. A bit poppy melodies but on the good side and especially the song parasite is really good. Cheers! 🙂
I’m almost where you are but I have a conflict in DPP. I’d overall like it and rank it quite high if it wasn’t so Tuomas shitting in Tarja driven. And IMO wrongfully. I agree on several key things: Annette did good studio work not so great live. Floor and Tarja both out of this world it’s just what NW vibe you prefer. I think when Tuomas wrote FOR Tarja and more personal songs he does a better song writing g job than when he went more clinical/science. And for the most part didn’t fully use Floor. Tho he did want to be a biologist at one time). Thanks
1. Oceanborn 1. Century child ---- Gap 3. Wishmaster 4. Once ---- Big Gap 5. Endless forms most beautiful ---- Huge Gap 6. Angels fall first 7. Yesterwynde 8. Human Nature 9. Imaginaerum ---- Eternal Gap: DPP is just crap - esp. because of the Pop vocals 10. Dark Passion Play As much as I respect and love Floor's voice and interpretations of a lot of songs (also of Tarja's era) the quality of the songwriting dropped a lot in my mind.
Nightwish is one of my favorite bands, but they release albums slowly. I understand that Tuomas is the main one. I wish them luck, but for now I will follow Lovebites, who release album after album in the same style.
If you are referring to the video editor, I use Inshot on my phone. I use keyframes to make the album covers move around the screen like that and I also pre-designed the background graphics for the ranking table.
Pretty hard band to rank in all honesty. For the most part, nothing but quality stuff across the entire discography. Yesterwynde being a surprisingly fantastic album has really thrown my personal rankings into disarray. As of this moment though, for me? 1. Dark Passion Play 2. Century Child 3. Yesterwynde 4. Imaginaerum 5. Once 6. Oceanborn 7. Endless Forms Most Beautiful 8. Wishmaster 9. Angels Fall First 10. Hvman :II: Natvre Like I say though, hard to go wrong with Nightwish.
The problem wity ranking is many people think of live shows and for me, Floor performing old and new songs makes her the best. Her performances bring to lilfe the old songs better.
yeah that is so true. I think Floor might even be the best of the 3 in a live setting. This ranking was only studio album, but it would be interesting to rank specific live performances or albums as well.
No one asked but here's my ranking : 1. Imaginaerum 2. Dark Passion Play 3. Endless forms most beautiful 4. Once 5. Century Child 6. Human Nature 7. Yesterwynde 8,9 & 10 the first awful, awful albums, disliked them yhen dislike them now, although nostalgia elevates them a bit as they bring a lot of good memories :)
Annette doesn't get enough credit, but Tarja and Floor are so much better that's the problem. When I think of Nightwish, I think of Tarja the true queen of symphonic metal genera.💯💗🤟
Yeah, that is true, Tarja set the bar very high, Annette has her own unique style even if she lacks the operatic range and Floor is probably the best live, so they all have something to offer.
Oceanborn - the best there is on this globe.
It's definitely a strong album.
1a to Century Child's 1b. Just can't decide...

Yes I agree dark Passion Play is a great album and a lot of other people in the comments seem to agree as well
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Just did my ranking yesterday and it was identical to yours! DPP is so cathartic.
That's awesome
DPP is also my favorite
That's so cool. I'm glad that I am getting a pretty good response after putting Dark Passion Play at number one.
Mine as well!🎉

Yes, I agree, they released a solid string of album from the late 90s to the early 2000s.
EFMB on 10? No way…
Something had to come last 😂
@@jcrockandmetalreviews 😉
The best albums are the Tarja ones up to Once. And he got that right.

Yes it's understandable I think this band has a strong discography in general so almost any combination could make sense.
I"m actually one of the people who enjoys Annette's stuff with the band, therefore I was elated you put DPP at #1!
It is a great album.
Dark Passion Play is a monster of a record. Got unfairly bashed at the time because it was the first one without Tarja. Nowadays though it’s generally seen as a classic by most Nightwish fans.
Nice, I know that the Annette albums can be divisive with fans.
Good Nightwish ranking, John.
Thanks. Glad You liked it.
My favourite albums are Century Child and Wishmaster, followed by Oceanborn.
That was a good run of albums

Yeah, Annette had some good albums, but it seems that some fans didn't like her or just preferrred Tarja.

Yes thanks, I realized that I completely butchered her name in the last 2 videos that I made 😁.

Yes love bites is another pretty good band I listened to their last album.
Walking in the Air is a cover of an award winning '82 cartoon ost
Cool. I didn't know that. It's probably why it sounded very familiar to me.

Yes, I agree. Their discography is hard to rank as I don't think that they have any bad albums.
Once, DPP and Imaginareum are top 3 on the same level.

I kindly agreed with this, except "imaginaerum". In my opinion, it is far better than "yesterwynde"
Yes I really like imaginarium but it was one of those things where all the other albums in front of it I like just a little better.
