I had a difficult time listening to Shannon Smith’s voice and style. She is grating. I believe Ethan’s parents failed him by buying him a gun, not securing it, and by ignoring his cries for help. Ethan is severely mentally sick. Hallucinations without taking drugs, believing the house is haunted, bowls are flying from the shelves. No therapist or professional help from parents. While the parents were not parenting and ignored the obvious, I’m not positive Jennifer will be found guilty.

If I were a juror, I would ask to be removed because of dislike of Shannon Smith due to her behaviors. Too much bias against her not sure I could be objective. Prosecution's actions aren't much better. The judge runs too loose a courtroom.

I would vote guilty because the parents took no steps in trying to prevent this. All the signs were there that he was either going to hurt himself or others and they left him at the school without checking if he had the gun that they bought him. And all the things they did after the shooting showed consciousness of guilt more so than remorse.

@@KohalaLoverI agree. The parents acted detached from him, drank & did coke, had affairs, fighting, living beyond their means. It was a very volatile situation in their home. It’s no wonder he couldn’t function & his mental illness manifested itself. JC doesn’t care about him now either, she only cares about herself. She took his money and ran away. I’d venture to say that she doesn’t care about the dead & injured victims of that day. She only cares about saving her a$$.

Im sorry but I cant get over this defense attorney. I understand that there are differing opinions on whether or not the affairs are relevant, but to be in a court room full of victims and/or victims families and laugh, make a joke about how exciting this is going to get and say things like "you might make us all blush" is insanly unprofessional and disrespectful, IMO. If you watch the trial from the Parkland school shooter, it’s even worse. There was a few defense attorneys always sitting at the table and one of them is under investigation by that state bar now. They flipped the judge off, and they mocked victims families when they were giving their statements on top of many other things like laughing and joking around making faces, they truly made a mockery of that courtroom. And they argued with the judge several times in front of the jury. This defense attorney should be completely ashamed and embarrassed. His mother is as cold as ice, narcissistic, cruel and was wilfully indifferent to her son's cries of help. She only cared about herself, her desires, her horses, her affair and money. She shows no remorse for the 14 victims, three teachers and 11 children and none for her son's severe mental problems. She knew he was depressed, was, 'not right' and although he already had one gun didn't protest and stop him having an even more lethal weapon. She is emotionless, callous, sharp, seemingly oblivious to her culpability not only in consistently neglecting her son and mocking him but also in the horrendous murders her son carried out on defenceless, innocent children and teachers. She will be sentenced for second degree murder and her other counts, I am quite sure the Jury will find her guilty and rightly.

She is trying her best to give the truth and to keep herself out of jail, so should she say Yes to questions where the answer is “once in a while” or “it would depend on the situation”? Because saying no is more accurate, but if the circumstance allows, maybe the answer would be yes. Do you follow? it’s the DAs responsibility to convict her, it’s not her responsibility to prove her innocence. She is innocent until they prove without a doubt that she is guilty.

A parent has to make sure a roof is over their head, clothes on their backs and food in their bellies until they're 18. On top of that, the govt also gave the kids rights after the age of 12/14&16 depending on where you live. We can't make them do anything. We can offer support, give advice etc but not control.

I own a gun but I also have a profound respect for it. Too many people do not respect guns and what they are capable of. They are for protection, they are not a toy. @@Larissa-im9pm it has nothing to do with the parents having bought the gun. It has everything to do with mental illness and accessibility to a firearm. Ethan called out for help in so many ways. I have a 16 yo. I listen to my son. I also have over 20 firearms in my home and without my handprint or my husbands handprint, our firearms cannot be accessed. Again I say, Ethan is just as much of a victim as the others. Be well!

    1. Why you take your child to a gun range to practice shooting
    2. Why it’s totally ok that your child requests a gun multiple times
    3. That you buy said gun
    4. That the gun wasn’t secure and in a place that the child had no access to

I believe this mom to just not understand possibilities of mental health and though there were possible signs, I don’t think she didn’t necessarily care. I don’t think she understood the extent to what her son was feeling at the time. Some parents don’t know what to make of mental health issues, or what to do. As a school counselor, I blame the school for not taking Ethan’s pictures serious enough. I would insist that the student go home and see a crisis therapist within 24 hours. Also, to not check his backpack at the time, was a huge mistake.

    • @cady__
      @cady__ 5 місяців тому

They didn’t know he owned or had access to a gun. They didn’t not have all the information necessary to force Ethan to go home that day - they can’t force parents to take children home when the parents don’t tell them enough to make that determination. Neither Jennifer nor James were forthcoming with information to the counselor. He said he would like them to take him that day and see a counselor for suicidal ideation - they refused and legally they were not allowed to do more. If you’re upset, blame those who set the laws for school districts not the counselor. And blame the parents for not giving them more information about Ethan and that he had access to a weapon. The parents are brain dead idiots.

SHE DIDN’T PURCHASE THE GUN!!!!! OH MY GOD!!! Your comment makes me realize that 90% of people don’t listen.
The Mom didn’t buy the gun, and it wasn’t her idea.
If it was completely up to the Mom, and the Dad didn’t exist, the gun wouldn’t have even been purchased.
It was The Dad and The Son who decided that and did that.
The only reason why she went to the gun range with the son is because HE ASKED, and he RARELY ASKED to do something with his mom.
Also: The Prosecutor asked many times about getting help for the son.

The school and any authorities aware of this drawing prior to shooting should absolutely be held liable along with the parents. The staff had a responsibility of due diligence under the law to report the child and parents to CPS. He clearly indicated he wanted to harm himself or others. Many intermediate schools across the nation perform routine and random checks of backpacks during school and even before the student can enter the building. The child should immediately been removed from campus by authorities and taken to a station or hospital for questioning and evaluation. The school absolutely should have looked in his bag and I’m certain they’ve done it for lesser reason like determining whom a lost bag belonged to. He should have never been allowed to return to class or around other children. I recall reading somewhere that charges or a case filed by parents against the school were dropped, and that is a travesty.
