My friend gave me some left over gouache she had for a class a while ago and a few of the tubes were dried out so I cut into it and pulled the packaging away and it created a lot of powder which looks very similar to brusho. I did grind it finer and also used it coarse. So fun experimenting!!
I bought a color set earlier this year. One really cool thing to do is tape a piece of watercolor to a waterproof board and sprinkle a bit then put it outside while it's raining. The kids like to watch the colors bounce around. If you leave it out too long you'll have mud, but I've gotten some fun backgrounds from that method during these last rainstorms. Fun to experiment with my children too. Thanks for making a video, it was interesting to see a comparison. I also really like the tip about poking a hole in the top. I ALWAYS get too much out when I open the lid.
Lindsay I really appreciate you doing this video, I planned to buy a few of the Brushos next week at my local craft store and I think I will definitely be getting a few to play with after seeing the results. Have fun at the Stamp Show this weekend. Hugz, Anne
It is used as a watercolour in the UK. You put a little powder in a little pot and mix with a little water and use like watercolour. The bun containers that have about 6 spaces for cooking small muffins or similar are probably best then you can mix a few colours. Once made up, you can mix colours just as you would with watercolour. There are people who use them regular who state there are no lightfast issues. I would treat them exactly as artist quality watercolour. Hope that helps.
Hi Lindsay :-) Another great video and so much fun! I save my woodless watercolor pencil shavings and water soluble crayon shavings, and sprinkle them on my watercolor paper, then spritz it with water. I love the effect because the vibrant colors are amazing. Thank you so much for sharing :-)
I have some Brusho colours and just love them! I love putting 2 or 3 colours on the paper, spraying and then using a straw to "blow" the colours every which way! Love your ideas and "playtime" videos......... Keep 'em coming!
Very interesting review. You have shown us how to use so many things to make terrific backgrounds I don't think I need any more products like that, but it is good to see what this product can be used for. There doesn't seem to be much control in how bright the colors come out or where they go. The info on Blick said it has been manufactured for 35 years. I wonder what they use it for in England? Maybe for a fabric dye? It said it could be used on paper, fabric and wood, and added to other mediums. Thanks for comparing the Inktense sticks. I have grated them and applied with a brush like paint. It is fun to think now I can sprinkle them too.
I love playing with my Brusho's. The Black esp is made of so many different colors that when you spritz it it explodes into all sorts of colors. The trick is enough water, but not to much so you lose the individual colors. It's also fun to then blow it around with either a straw or a color spritzer (the kind meant to be used with markers) So much fun to play with! And no 2 pieces will ever be the same.
I like the last tree that you made, it looks like a windy day with a river in the bottom of the page very cool, I just ordered the brusho, it seems like a lot of fun .
Lindsay, make sure you get the black Brusho cuz it has so many colors within it, making the black, and the crystals spread, allowing you to see all the different colors. I was given the 12 set for my birthday last month, a d I habe been experimenting with them. They are so much fun. Definitely get the black, k? You will love it. I love how you try different media, for those whose don't habe these magical pigments. Nice tutorial, as usual. I am so excited to,finally be coming to Maine in August. I will be thinking of you. Enjoy your summer with the family.
Hi, Lindsay,You really need to try the black, it's awesome when you spray the water on it as it's not just black, it has purples and oranges amongst other colours in it. I managed to get the 12 pack a while back and now I want the 8 pack for the other colours lol.Bejay x
Thanks for the great video, you always inspire me! I just ordered a set earlier this week and was excited to see you reviewed them. From my research, Brusho is moderately light fast. I imagine it is best to use UV protection on any project that is to endure the test of time. I can't wait to play with mine!
Hi Lindsay. Most videos I have watched using these put them in a pallet and mix with water the let them dry back out. They reactivate just as bright as the first time. But your backgrounds made be shaking are really cool. (:
Love this video. I have been wanting to get these for a really long time. I have Bister & just love working with it. It is more like walnut crystals with colors in it. I was wanting some pure colors. Now I know for sure that Brush is exactly what I want. I saw a tie dye kit on clearance at Mike's that I'll have to pick up until I get the Brusho. As always, thanks for taking the time to do this. Jil
OMG I used to use those in College (UK) I didn't know what they were called, thank you for reminding me of these. We used to have this metal science-y stick to get the powder out... poking the hole on top is a lot more practical XD
First off ... I love your videos! I learn a lot from your tips, tricks, tutorials, reviews and advice. That being said, I'd like to say this.... LOL!!! That last piece, my first impression was - TREE ON FIRE!!!! *giggles* I'm sorry, I know you were going for autumn, but that's what I saw. It's still a great piece though. Thanx for all you do and looking forward to more! *HUGS!!*
How funny...I was just going to ask you about these!!!! I watched about 10 videos last night on this paint (Joanne Boon Thomas did a beautiful tree with it). The black is amazing...it 'deconstructs' into beautiful colors. Anyway, thank you, Lindsay. Have a great time at the Heirloom Show!
You should be called an enabler-crafter, CAUSE I HAVE TO HAVE THESE! I do appreciate the comparison, I have inktense and love the permanent when dry factor. 🎨👍🏼
I guess Im asking randomly but does any of you know a trick to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Deshawn Augustus thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Deshawn Augustus DAMN IT ACTUALLY WORKED! I just got access to my ig password within ~ 40 mins of using the site. Had to pay 15 $ but for sure worth the money :) Thank you so much, you really help me out !
I see some have already asked about the Ken Oliver Color Bursts - looks very much the same. They look like fun but I have been doing similar things with my grated intense blocks. (Oh, and I just use my craft knife to scrape the blocks. One less tool to store for me! :) )
Lindsay, you'd love it where I live. It NEVER gets in the 40's in June. We have short, mild winters. Maybe you need to fly south for the winter, oh and summer, well...you may as well stay all year!! LOL
Thank you! I don't thinks these are for me but it was a fun video to watch. I like your tree stamp but I would LOVE to see a tutorial on painting or drawing a tree. I am lousy at making branches look realistically attached to the trunk. Enjoy the stamp show!
Jesse b that would be a great tutorial indeed! I still find them hard to make, those trees. Thinks I'm trying to draw/paint them since kindergarden lol.
Great technique and reminded me that I wonder if you've ever tried this really cool product called "Pebeo" I think? The initials the co uses are "PBO.". This stuff was so cool looking! I would love to see your take on them? I know, of course they've been around for quite some time, but as usual I'm always behind. Thanks Lindsay for this and for considering a PBO demo ;-)
You mentioned it being in the forties, there in June. Well, here in northern Idaho, when it is usually in the 70s, we have had 4 days of upper 90s, YIKES!
Brusho Crystal Colors - can they be used with acrylic mediums? I've easily mixed mica powders to make a "flow-able" acrylic paint, but can the Brusho crystals be used that way also? or even sprinkled onto wet paint (white or any color) for effects to show later? And would they then brush off after drying? With Mica powders, I've mixed them with Floetrol to make a flow acrylic (type) paint - it's not really a medium, but seems to work in a similar manner with mica powders, which also mix well with the more well known acrylic mediums - and they don't brush off or dilute after they're dry. I'd love to find out if these can also do that.
I really liked the autumn tree you did. What colors should I get with these three so I can try to do one, too? Is there a link to the tree stamp you used? Where did you get your spray bottle? What kind of paper are you using. Thanks
I saw someone try koolaid but she did it in reverse where she sprayed water and then plopped koolaid out of the packet. I think it would be a great alternative if put in a container with a hole and then spritzed with water. Thought you'd be the one to ask what you Thought!? Thnaks as always..Also Pazz Easter egg dye pellets crushed are great from a video I have saw .I've not yet bought any of those yet
Love how vivid these are! Do you know if Bister is similar to these? I was thinking about getting some Bister, and I had never heard of Brusho. Now I don't know which I should get. Thanks Lindsay!
Are the brusho's pure pigment? Or diluted pigment? We used them in art school when we had to make our own oil paint. That's interesting. I really like the dye idea, Lindsay! I may do that with my teen journalers at the library. They'd get a huge charge out of it. Fun. Thanks!
Diana Trout gosh Diana, they are brighter than tie-dye dre and inktense so they must be pure or maybe have a smidgen of powder gum arabic in them as a binder? OR Maybe they are a dye and they absorb, someone said they are fairly light fast though.
thanks for the review, I ll just stick with pastels ior inktens if I want to do this stuff! another way to save lol. I guess you have allmost all the craft things new on the market by now with all the reviews? how did you start up?
I remember hearing in another Brusho video that they were very colorfast because I recall thinking that was a very good thing. However, you'll probably want more definitive and authoritative responses about this.
We used to use a similar product to the Brusho (or was brusho) at my college, which Is quite close to the actual place that makes the Crystal colour. Though what we had was crystals that were in a bottle with water in them, and that would essentially be a colour mix. They always had crystals in the bottom but the colour was really bright and bold. I'm just wondering if you'd get a better result with the Rit dye if you used it like that.
Hi Lindsay, can i use brusho crystal colors with my adult coloring books with watercolor paper or thick papers like the Hanna Karlzon, Beckett Griffith, Prima coloring books? If so, when using brusho as background, do i apply it first? Thank you very much.
looks like an interesting product, not that I need any more colors LOL! If you don't mind, I have a question on another product called Prismacolor Scholar Brush tip. I really liked the tips, but having had them for so long, they are drying out. Do you know of any way to revive them. If not I am going to use them with my water colors, as I like the tips and don't want to throw them out. Thank you for all your good videos that I enjoy and learn from x
+elkeartsandcrafts Elaine Jones gosh, I'm stumped, I know of prismacolor scholar pencils but not markers, Smell them, if they smell like alcohol use alcohol to revive them, if not oder you can use them with water:)
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Thank you for the reply, Lindsay. I cut a piece out of the original box along with the color guide - quote '20 water-based, non-toxic markers that dry fast to a vivid color that never smudges', so I will give the water a try.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Oh, BTW I looked up the website after my previous reply and they have a number of markers and brush tip products. I didn't think of doing that before, duh! Thanks again x

Hi Lindsay, thanks for sharing and for the comparisons. If you haven't already, you should check out the video by ArtTutor: ua-cam.com/video/nSiiZLH0678/v-deo.html . It's done by Joanne Boon using Brusho and she used it just like you would use regular watercolor paint from a tube (except no squeezing just shaking). You also might want to try a different spray bottle. I will use an old perfume atomizer to give a superfine mist when I use watercolor pencils and this might give better results when you try Brusho (so the water doesn't run all over). I have not tried Brusho, though after sharpening my pencils I save the color shavings for a similar effect. BTW, do you have an aquarium? I kept hearing gurgling in the background before your heater kicked on. :-)
I don't think this is something I would invest in. Interesting concept, but, seems like a lot of effort for minimal impact. Colors are pretty, but because one would have to be extra careful with them, it doesn't seem like the investment would be worth it. I'm sure they fit the needs of some, but not willing to invest at this time.
My friend gave me some left over gouache she had for a class a while ago and a few of the tubes were dried out so I cut into it and pulled the packaging away and it created a lot of powder which looks very similar to brusho. I did grind it finer and also used it coarse. So fun experimenting!!

mebearcreations Yes! My drawing skills are non existent but I really want to be able to do a tree
aww..that bad for you? A tree must be possible! keep trying. Practice makes perfect!

I'd be finding the closest colour Etoh marker and colouring the top of the brusho bottles! Looks like a fun product!
You mentioned it being in the forties, there in June. Well, here in northern Idaho, when it is usually in the 70s, we have had 4 days of upper 90s, YIKES!
they have come all the way from Sheffield ware I come from, will look into that. thanks
Lovely ideas! I like the brusho, but I had to give it a try but could not find any so I used cool aid!
catfancyful clever! How did it work?
***** really well and smells wonderful
It's definitely a good something. I enjoyed this creation. Thanks!
Enjoyed my visit. Neat video. Thanks for sharing, Marie

Thank you for the video!
I was dying to know if salt would work with these.
I have not boughten brushos. So this video looks extra neat.

Yvonne Irish I have never used them but someone said they have walnut ink crystals in them, maybe they are more vintage looking? I have no idea.

Hey Lindsay, how you think the Brusho compares to the Ken Oliver Color Bust powders please?
Lindsay, please compare these to the new color burst powders!!!!they r so similar but it looks like u get a lot more bang for ur buck with these!
Gavi S I just got some at the stamp show, I'll have a tutorial soon!
Great, can't wait!urs always so on top of things lindsay!:)
Hi Lindsay, can i use brusho crystal colors with my adult coloring books with watercolor paper or thick papers like the Hanna Karlzon, Beckett Griffith, Prima coloring books? If so, when using brusho as background, do i apply it first? Thank you very much.
I liked these best as you used them in the flower box painting - as a bit of an accent.
Hi Lindsay, I'm a bit late to this game, but do you know ---What is the difference between the Brusho and Lindy's art Gang Magical powders?
Lindsey, what kind of paper do you recommend for this application?
Lindsay have you tried the East Indian holiday festival colour powders, the ones they throw in the streets. They are not too expensive.
The holi festival, my spell check.
looks like an interesting product, not that I need any more colors LOL!
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich
Thank you for the reply, Lindsay. I cut a piece out of the original box along with the color guide - quote '20 water-based, non-toxic markers that dry fast to a vivid color that never smudges', so I will give the water a try.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich
Oh, BTW I looked up the website after my previous reply and they have a number of markers and brush tip products. I didn't think of doing that before, duh! Thanks again x
Neat comparisons
How about using unflavored powdered kook aid mix?
How do you think the brusho compares to the color bursts? They are very highly pigmented, and super fine powder, but would the brusho be a duplicate product?
I was just thinking that these could be a cheaper alternative to the color burst product too!
Letha Richardson thismuseofmine brusho's have been around 20+ years. They aren't the ''duplicate'' ahem ;)
Letha Richardson thismuseofmine I just gotr some, I'll let you know, I reckon they are about the same, it is just really hard to et the brushos in the states, I think that is why the color bursts have come along.
I was wondering. If you punch a whole it top and you have a very humid day, will the colors get moisture out of the air and become hardened.
Sherlock Hoka Hey gal, I just wanted to wish you safe travels with your move. I wanted to send you a card, Will you get it if I send it to your old address? If not please email me your new one artstudiosofbangor@yahoo.com
Can you use them in a palette and paint with them like regular watercolours as the seem very economical?
Yes you can. That is what most do with them.
I can't help thinking that something so concentrated is supposed to be diluted for use, and not used dry. I've never heard of it, though.
Does a copic blender marker work the same as a dover blender pen as well as the blender pen from Michael's?
luv2craftcards copic is alcohol based for alcohol marjers and the dove is waterbased for watercolor markers, pencils and crayons as well as chalk. I am not sure what the micheals one is.
I like wet paper first then apply. And also, don't spritz so close to the paper.
Good night dear Lindsay very......super.........GREAT, thank you is beautiful, thank you for sahring, happy weekend and happy strokes.
Looks like they would be a great start to picture. Just let them dry and go in with a finer detail. Would look like you spent hours on it!
Could you put it in your mortis and pessil (I can't spell) and grind the RIT dye finer.
Sherlock Hoka I think the large clumps in the rit is soda ash for fixing color to fabric and not a pigment so I do not think it will benefit the cause but maybe...
Try to break the chunkier stuff down in a mortar and pestle :)
Is this all water based so you can use your water coloring brushes with it and it will wash/ rinse out of them????
+Kel Suth yes
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich thanks
Nice
Thanks for the video, messaged you on FB :)
il existe un brusho brun clair pour l arbre
I don't think this is something I would invest in. Interesting concept, but, seems like a lot of effort for minimal impact. Colors are pretty, but because one would have to be extra careful with them, it doesn't seem like the investment would be worth it. I'm sure they fit the needs of some, but not willing to invest at this time.
Sonofabitch. I was gonna name MY stamp company "stamp camp" 😡😡😡😂
