    I'd love to have these paints, but they're gonna have to go on my wish list for now with a $95 price tag. But I'm not complaining. Considering what you get, they're fairly priced. I've also been spending on my "getting more serious" oil painting development and have been adding supplies to that...(I just got a 37ml tube of W&N cadmium red deep that I've fallen in love with,) along with DIY framing supplies and the list goes on & on. I'm sure you know what I mean. 😊But thanks, as always, for your fun and informative reviews!👍
    p.s. I even came across a yet unused & forgotten Cotman Portrait Pocket set that was an order error on Amazon's part bc they advertised it as as a WN artist grade field palette set. BUT I waited too long and past the return date. So I think I'll just keep it....Im sure it's pretty good. I'll just check the pigments they used.

I have quite a few palettes and I have had the BlockX Giant pans in my cart at StLouis Art and Amazon too, I have not been able to pull that trigger as those pans start at $27.95 to $42.99 just so much to justify paying for a series of paints that for the most part are base colors and I do have A LOT of paints that I am not likely to use up before I pass! So interesting! I might have to try these! You spiked my curiosity about tiny ceramic dishes, so I did some googling … if you type in something like “ceramic tiny condiment dishes” or “ceramic tiny sauce dishes” a few possibilities come up, but I think most of them still seem bigger than what you probably want. I noticed some glass options, too, if someone is interested in glass ones. I think there might be some kind of small open cup-type thing that some people who use inks might use, that might be similar to these pans, so I’m off to investigate that … but I could well be imagining that item! I will let you know 😂…

I followed a link on my google search to Etsy and a “related search category” popped up there, of “miniature dishes” and I think that might yield some good results, just going on my extremely brief glance at what came up. So, if anyone is interested in small ceramic dishes, they might find what they want on Etsy by searching “miniature dishes”… but they might not😂😂😂. I thought they would be relatively easy to find!

    Great review! Two questions:
    1. How is the flow in wet on wet compared to other brands like QOR (Kaboom!) vs. Winsor & Newton (No-flow/No-Boom)?
    2. Is there any anti-fungicide in the paint to prevent mold? If not I'm sure the usual "let the paint dry out thoroughly before closing up the container" rule applies.
    Little known fact on W&N half pan cakes - During manufacturing, W&N compresses the dried watercolor cakes so there is a full 5ml tube in each half pan cake. But as you said, if you fill a half pan from the tube, you get about 2 to 3 ml per half pan.

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      @dianemiller8153 День тому

      @@mjpete27 - what I was trying to get at was - I am used to using medium with acrylics or oils, but I have never felt I had to add gum arabic medium to the watercolors I was using. • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter День тому +1

      I have not used the tonic medium, but I used the davinci watercolor medium recently (video coming soon!) to make watercolor paint out of pigment because it contained gum arabic, and a flow aid like synthetic ox gall. This can increase flow and transparency if needed. I've used the winsor and newton granylating, texture, and irridecentbmediums with watercolor. And I use their watercolor blending medium in my gouache palette to keep it wet longer. There is even a watercolor impasto medium for texture!

    I purchased this set when it was first released. I agree with your thought on the paint but I don’t care for the ceramic pans at all. My works area is on the smaller size as I use the area for both painting and computer use. The ceramic pans allow for the use of large brushes without worrying about damaging the brush. My main complaint is the size of the pans. Yes, it’s nice to get more paint than I could possibly use in a year but the pans restrict the paper size that I can easily use. I’m looking forward to plein air painting next year but I wont be using these paints due to their weight and size as they will not easily fit on a plein air palette. I make some of my watercolors so I’ll be sticking with the metal pans from Art Toolkit. I can get a lot more paints in the same space. Overall, I think there is a trade off between easy of use and size. The Tonic paints take a lot more space in your work area, storage is difficult due to the need to procure a container for them, and needing to mix every color that you need, while fun, is a pain when dealing with the changing light when painting in nature. If they come out with a smaller pan and a container I’ll take another look at them but until then they are a novelty paint to me.

    Lindsay I saw the other colors in the set and am think of getting them all-what a lot of pigment for a good price and lightfast. I am looking at the tonic water that goes with them. Would the tonic water create a faster evaporation? Or would these maybe dissolve with alcohol? I am always looking for ways to get pigment down on my coloring pages w/o using water

      @thefrugalcrafter День тому

      Do you mean the tonic watercolor medium? If you are using watercolor on coloring pages I'd recommend a coat of clear watercolor ground, let that dry and watercolor over it. Watercolor medium won't increase dry time. Alcohol can give cool effects when dripped on a watercolor wash but is weird when added to the paint.

    On my wish list. Keep checking the website and Amazon. But not on Amazon that’s ok. Rather order from the company.

      I noticed that watercolor pallets have paint colors in places that don't look like they are in a rainbow color order, so I'm wondering why that is.

      The watercolour in ceramic pans that I have are the Blockx giant pans, which are very good. I only have 4, for my most heavily used colours

      Sometimes it is in watercolor and it always in other mediums. Chinese white is not opaque. Pw6 is a very opaque pigment.

    The paints look great, the pigment selection is solid, but very basic. that is, split primary pallette is trying to be for everyone but I fear ends up being for none. I like large pans, but circe pans do not seem convenient.

      A lot of people have these colors already, but they are colors you use frequently, so I am glad to have an ample supply. In general, I like rectangular containers, but if you offset them like I did in the tin, it makes good use of space. I think it's practical but we are all different:)

    I would advice much more caution with unpacking. Despite the attempted scratching I can still very clearly read both the code and qr, and tracking. You don't know where this information will end and people can be very vicious.
