I'm seriously going out on a limb here. I cannot stand how radio stations play, "We Built This City", every two seconds on the radio and they don't play this freaking GEM. This is like their best song ever....HANDS DOWN!!!!
While some of it could be talent it has a lot more to do with decades of practice and discipline. No musician is born great... Yes some can be naturally gifted in composing or song writing. But you need to put many thankless hours into practicing so you can communicate those musical ideas in your head. To be able to think of something and play it/sing it instantly the way you were thinking of it takes years. Mickey Thomas has the notes in his range as he is a tenor, but to be able to hit them consistently and with good pitch was not a god given gift but years of hardwork. I only bring this up because Thousands of hours of hard work and discipline should not be swept under the rug of "Born with talent".
I remember liking these songs, still do, but maybe about 30 years ago I couldn't stand most vocalists (male) with such high pitch. It isn't any sort of "sexist" thing as much as it is a different approach in the music styles and somewhat the way the instruments might be played or tuned. Saw Kanter's Starship in summer 92 and I loved that. Jack was back, Pete Sears, Prarie Prince, and Papa John Creech with a lovely young lady on vocals instead of the great Grace Slick.
He's criminally underrated. I think he gets blamed for Jefferson Starship / Starship "selling out," but he wasn't even in the band for 'Miracles' or anything else on Red Octopus, much less Jefferson Airplane. The blame, if there was any, should have been placed on the longer-term band members.
I was a HS Jr when this song was tearing it up on the radio! But listening now, I’m like holy eff! He’s like an opera singer! Always loved this song, but his vocal performance on this song is phenomenal! I swear he singing opera!
cityofchamps66 I have to say... and yes I am aware of the cult status of Jefferson Airplane, etc. But Mickey Thomas has to be the greatest musician in the group in terms of playing talent throughout the entire history of it from Airplane to Starship. It's too bad he had to sing that shitty crap that came later in the Starship phase. But the stuff he sang during Jefferson Starship fucking SOARS!
fattonymusic I knew that I would get this response, especially regarding Jorma, and I respect him, but I still stand by what I said. I know Mickey didn't write the stuff but boy can he play his instrument like no one else!
One thing about Mickey Thomas, his voice is completely underrated in the music industry, he honestly has one of the greatest voices EVER. No questions asked. The range and the power and falsetto. Everything is perfect about his voice. I wish singers like him were recognized more.
rosey lo I must correct you here, but it's even better than you thought. Mickey Thomas back in that day had a minimum 4 octave vocal range, maybe 5. And he did it all with NO falsetto. It was pure, full head voice. Just like Steve Perry, Robert Plant, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Klaus Meine, and others. It makes these men's voices even that much more amazing to me. ☺

This is live!!! This is truly how it's supposed to be. Holy Moly their voices are sharp, Mickey Thomas as the best voice. I've seen others say his voice was and is underrated in the music industry and I agree 100%
Amen to that!!! I still remember watching Bon Jovi do the song "Livin' on a Prayer" on TV, back in the late 1980s, and his voice was so worn out, that he couldn't hit the high notes like he had, when they did that song on the Studio Album Slippery When Wet. It sounded horrible, live! If a band can't carry it's weight onstage, then yeah, the chances are that that band isn't gonna last long.
My wife was just in Cabo this past weekend (May 18th - May 21st) and there was a surprise performance going to be played at the Hilton she was staying at with a couple of her girl friends. They took a picture of this guy because they thought he looked like he might be part of whichever band was going to play, it turned out to be Mickey Thomas who was so humble and let them get pictures with him. That evening my wife was sending me videos from her phone of the performance and the Starship sounded AWESOME! Mickey can still hit those high notes and every song was fantastic! I wish I would have gone with her!

Grace Slick really turned me on. I was only 25 years old and had just come home from the Vietnam War.
This was surely the BEST incarnation of this band. The Starship was one of those bands that could still cut it up today, and rock with the best of them. Unfortunately, they just didn't have the years left.

"Jane" is a 1979 song by Jefferson Starship from the album Freedom at Point Zero. The song peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 14 and spent three weeks at No. 6
Dang! Living with these guys around the Bay Area was fun. Incredible voice and musicians. All of them. I miss the old days with these guys and their music. At least Mickey kept it going and at 71+ he's still giving his all. Ansley Dunbar laid down this groove on the album. I still have their very first vinal issued.

I’ve been singing for 46 years and Mickey Thomas here is simply so good it’s absolutely disgusting. This man honestly never really got the credit or exposure that he should have back in the 80s. He is one of the greatest voices ever in rock in my honest opinion. The men here is a monster.
"Jane" is a 1979 song by Jefferson Starship from the album Freedom at Point Zero. The song peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 14 and spent three weeks at No. 6

After I watched wet hot American summer I couldn't get this song out of my head!
Same went for me...I keep replaying it over and over again. ☺️

+Chai Tea Bought all of their albums because of that show. This is the sound I have been searching for! Amazing band!
+Chai Tea same here..!
one of the greatest songs sung by one of the greatest singers
What an amazing voice !Such a range just unbelievable imo most underrated voice in music I have to say he's up there with the best
Great Band... Great Song... Great Concerts.... Great Memories.
Mickey Thomas' voice is off the charts!
What a great classic! Man I feel old.
After all this time still one of favorites songs 71yrs
