  • This video is a part of a series of videos on 'How to Make Poppers'. This video shows how to shape a popper wood blank on a lathe. It also shows how to cut the angled face and how to make the concave face of the lure. Poppers can be used for many large species of pelagic fish such as tune and Wahoo. It is exciting to watch a fish strike a popper. There is usually a large splash and sometimes the fish come right out of the water.

Im a beginner in lathe work on poppers. Watching you do it has made it easy for me to learn . You could use a round cutter instead of those egg shaped burrs. Just to get done in one shot. I did it your way & used a round grinding stone to finish it off. I dont have a round cutter so i did the same way as you. Wow great catch.

Liked part one. I enjoy working on my lathe. I think you should lose the gloves though.
Its making me nervous watching that wood spinning at 1200 -1400 rpm and
those leather gloves getting close to catching on something. OUCH!!!!

Safety is important to everyone! The poppers I spin on the lathe are made of 2 pieces of wood that are very lightly glued together. After the sanding is done, I split them into 2 pieces and install the stainless steel thru wires and add holes for lead weights.
I had a popper fly apart and give me a nasty bruise on my knuckle. Mmm! What to do? I chose to wear good quality leather gloves for safety. The leather gloves have nothing hanging down to catch on the work piece. I would never use cloth gloves! Thank you for your comments.

Concave is curved inward. I think you meant convex.

Some material in the front of the popper is removed to leave a hollow. Air gets trapped in the hollow and is compressed when the lure is jerked forward. When the lure slows down, the compressed air is released which makes a popping sound. The terms concave and convex are terms most often used when discussing lenses. I do not want to debate which one is correct. Thanks for your comment.

@@MultiWhoswho I always appreciate comments about my videos. It is the only way I can improve my videos. I just returned from a 15 day long distance trip. I caught a Wahoo on one of my lures. Yipeeeee! I also made a friend in San Diego who loves my poppers. I will bring some show and tell lures for him to see in April.

@@allandoell1025 that’s awesome. I’m a bit jealous. Always wanted to catch a wahoo. The poppers are very nice. You do good work.
