Adding 3D Gills and Fins Part 9
This video shows how to add 3D gills and fins to stick baits. It has a detailed description how gills and fins can be 'glued on' using CA glue (super glue) to bond cardboard to the wooden lure body. It then goes on to describe how to contour the gills to make the lure look very lifelike. It also will show how to add shiny aluminum foil and how to scribe fish scales onto the lure body. Finally the lure will be painted with an airbrush using brilliant acrylic colours and then sealed with three coats of two part, high gloss, super strong epoxy.

    So I make lures myself and what I do with poppers is I cut a channel with a small saw blade attachment on a rotary dremel tool. Then I put my wire in and here’s the main part. Do fill in the channel I put baking soda layer by layer and super glue on top. The baking soda makes the glue turn rock hard instantly. Your method is awesome and I would try it but I think you have the risk of splitting wrong, or it splits badly or somethin. And after so much work I wouldn’t want to just throw away a broken lure. And for the weight you add you can cover that with baking soda and super glue too. Great video and just thought I’d share.

      Yes there are more than one way to skin a cat! I have used an internal wire channel for 5 years with good results. The only negative thing I found is you must use very little wood glue to hold them together temporarily. With the poppers you must use enough glue to hold the lure together on the lathe. Thank you for your comments! Keep making those lures!

    Well done, as always, Allan. Have you tried any of the other "chrome" paints that Franco tried on his Engineered Angller channel? Frankly, I decided some time ago to stick with the aluminum tape (pun intended). It's simple, reliable, and completely free of noxious fumes. That said, I appreciate your sharing this experiment with us. Chris (Maine, USA)

    • @allandoell1025
      @allandoell1025 Рік тому

      I totally agree with you Chris. The aluminum foil is more controllable and I can use it inside my house. No toxic issues. The aluminum does get some krinkles in it but you can usually hide them on the back. The belly krinkles are tougher to hide. I saw a Budd's Baits video a few days ago where he showed how to use a two part clear coat on his lures then sanded the aluminum edges flush. He used Carvello CC2 Clear Coat! Very interesting! I have not tried any other chrome paints.

      Hi, again, Allan. Thanks for your follow-up. In a remarkable stroke of irony, I have been trying to figure out the best means to tell you about my friend Greg Budd's method for creating gill plates on his extraordinary jerk baits! Have you seen it in his videos?

I'm in the process of coaxing him to do more videos; hope I eventually succeed! I have encountered just one other lure-maker who uses the gill-plate application technique. He is Paul Adams, a Brit who used to post terrific videos on his channel "The Handmade Fisherman." No particular comments, I also use the same technique to mount the eyes, if then they are not perfect....have you ever seen a fish that is perfectly symmetrical? That the right side is exactly the same as the left side? I have been fishing for over 50 years and I have never seen a perfect fish, in fact, imperfections were the natural situation of any fish. As for resin air bubbles, any kind of resin, I have seen that very few people use the silicone soft spatula brushes, they do not have bristles and therefore do not leave brush hairs, the soft spatula allows you to spread and crush the resin by popping air bubbles. What happened to you on the tail of the black fish, I think it's really because you put the baits vertically, I put them horizontally and the problems are reduced. What happened on the pink bait, where the resin made craters, happened to me too and I found it was an ambient temperature problem, I turned on a space heater and the problem went away. Unfortunately in Italy we have big problems with the shortage of fish in the Mediterranean Sea, there is too much water and not enough fish and also the catches are getting more and more difficult without considering that new species of fish are arriving and attacking the eggs of the local fish, such as the lionfish that was never seen until 5 years ago, the puffer fish that unfortunately many did not know it and ate it with the consequences you can imagine, sharks are practically non-existent in our country, so far only one white shark has been spotted but it has been 3 years since anyone has seen it. Till next time bye

    Good morning from Italy. it's been a long time that I've been making bait exclusively for those who, like me, fish exclusively from shore because unhappy non-boat owners even if rowing. With this video I am beginning to think how much easier I can make my life to make near perfect eyeballs. You basically say to make eyeballs even before you sand the fish, calculating how much wood will be removed. I use print stencils to shape them, draw the gills that will be etched, while I prefer to make the fins in relief by shaping them with cardboard (example from notepads or alternatively from Amazon envelopes), after treating them with cyanacrylate glue I finish them with sandpaper. I await the second part Thank you

      It is tough to get action shots. One person to drive the boat, one person to hold the rod and another to hold the camera. When a lure is first put in the water, it must be tuned. The front stainless loop must be bent left or right depending on how the lure tracks behind the boat. As the lure starts to track directly behind the boat, the trolling speed can be increased. Smaller adjustments are required the faster you troll. You will ulitmately hit a sweet spot. 8 mph is the speed you need the lure to swim at. Several times my lures have crashed into the muddy bottom of the lake. I must admit however that I have not been able to repeat the deep diving in salt water. The ocean currents behind a large boat are very complicated. They can hit almost from any direction and cause the lure to tumble. This also happens to the commercial lures that they are design from!

      Safety is important to everyone! The poppers I spin on the lathe are made of 2 pieces of wood that are very lightly glued together. After the sanding is done, I split them into 2 pieces and install the stainless steel thru wires and add holes for lead weights. I had a popper fly apart and give me a nasty bruise on my knuckle. Mmm! What to do? I chose to wear good quality leather gloves for safety. The leather gloves have nothing hanging down to catch on the work piece. I would never use cloth gloves! About 15 seconds depending on the room temperature. I heat it in 5 second increments until the epoxy goes from cloudy to clear. I continue to mix for at least 2 minutes. I use a hot air gun to remove bubbles before application. I always use a spinner for my epoxy. Three coats are required.

    HI, Allan. I just discovered your popper series and watched this first one. I'm an amateur lure-maker, lifelong saltwater fisherman, and big surface-lure fan, so it's right up my alley. Some viewers may criticize you for what they see as an AGONIZING amount of detail and explanation, but even though I don't need it, BEGINNERS DO! You have done them a great service, and I wish there were a way to get the word out to all those who dream of making saltwater lures on a lathe.. The one thing that struck me as odd about this EXCELLENT part 1 is that you don't mention what kind of glue you use to temporarily laminate the clear pine before turning it. This strikes me as critical: It has to be strong enough to keep the stock together on the lathe, BUT it also has to be "weak" enough to allow the pieces to be readily separated after the lure is shaped. I, too, use temporarily laminated wood (Home Depot poplar) for my baits, and I have settled on strips of a high-quality two-sided shop tape, which is clean, quick, and effective. Are you using an all-purpose "white glue" like Elmers? I can't tell from the video but think viewers will need this information right off the bat. Best, Chris

      Hi Chris. Thank you for your comments. I use Elmer's ProBond Max for all my wood gluing. It is rated ANSI Type 1 Waterproof and it's available at Home Depot! I just got back from a long distance fishing trip. I caught 2 Wahoo with my lures. The biggest was 50 lbs.. Both lures I used look very chewed on, which is great. The 2 layers of 2 part epoxy coatings took a real beating!

    Hi Allan: I commented on your deep diving lures. I was just watching videos on DTX lures and they have auto tune eyes at the nose of the lure. Something I thought you might want to give a try. Good luck bud.

    • @allandoell1025
      @allandoell1025 2 роки тому

      The DTX auto-tune system is not easy to reproduce. I think one thing I could try would be to remove some of the epoxy in the area near the front loop of the lure. I will give this more thought to see if there is a reasonable option to implement this type of self centering/tuning. Centering/tuning these lures is the biggest problem I have with them. I have a box of finished lures that do swim well at 10 mph.

    I've been using this product to fix up the reflective surface inside a headlight assembly. The mirror surface on these factory parts, is done differently. It is done similar to powdercoating with cooking the part. The mirror surface is very delicate and easily damaged. I accidently touched one of those surfaces and the fingerprint damage the surface. In attempting to wipe clean the fingerprint. All the chrome came off with the cloth. The spray chrome puts down a usable surface. But not anything like the factory mirror effect. The only other thing I can say about using the product. It's is a little more durable than other methods. I bought another product that required an air brush to apply. It did not work nearly as well. Very disappointing in fact. Nothing like they advertise. These rattle can products seem to work the best.

      I just returned from a 15 day long distance fishing trip. The boat caught many tuna on their kite with artificial flying fish. Another person on board caught tuna with their artificial flying fish. They used helium from the boat to keep their balloons away from the lures. My wings were too dark. I tried for several hours but could not get a bite.

    Hi Allan: Really enjoying your video's. Very interested in making these lures since I've been going to the Caribbean o fish. I did make one Bonita but as many times I tried to adjust it, it still pops up on the surface. I can't find your South Seas site anywhere. Did you use cable as a leader for Wahoo. Thanks for the information and great work.

    • @allandoell1025
      @allandoell1025 2 роки тому

      I use 200 lbs. fluorocarbon leaders for Wahoo. The deep divers can certainly be tough to tune. You need to use a split ring on the front loop to tie your leader on. Start trolling slowly. Increase the speed slowly until the lure starts to drift left or right. If the lure drifts to your right, as you look at it, bend the front loop to the left. you should now be able to increase your trolling speed. Increase your speed slowly again until the lure starts to drift right or left. Do this until you get to the desired speed. As you increase in speed, bend the front loop smaller amounts. I test my Wahoo lures in fresh water, I have got them down 30 feet. I know this because I could feel them slam into the lake bottom. I brought up mud and weeds several times.

    Concave is curved inward. I think you meant convex.

    • @allandoell1025
      @allandoell1025 2 роки тому

      Some material in the front of the popper is removed to leave a hollow. Air gets trapped in the hollow and is compressed when the lure is jerked forward. When the lure slows down, the compressed air is released which makes a popping sound. The terms concave and convex are terms most often used when discussing lenses. I do not want to debate which one is correct. Thanks for your comment.

    I've used the Rustoleum product and I had to replace the spray tip with a tip from a different rattle can. The original tip did not atomize the paint very well and it came out too heavy. This caused runs. I'm still not getting the mirror effect I want to see. You have to be careful what you use with this paint. I attempted to use a poly clear over the paint. But it did not improve the shine. When I went back over the poly clear. The finish began to orange peel.

    Good looking plugs. Just curious why you don’t simply turn the body on lathe and drill though from head to tail?

    • @allandoell1025
      @allandoell1025 2 роки тому

      It is very tough to get an accurate hole by drilling the hole in the lure after it has been turned on the lathe. Cutting the channel prior to gluing the two halves together is very easy to do and every hole is perfect. The glued lure is very hard to break apart and should be able to take lots of abuse from sharp toothed fish.
