Recently a Harvard study concluded that potatoes are bad for those wanting to lose weight and be healthy. But is this true and accurate? Or another example of shoddy "science?" Well, if we are discussing French Fries, Potato Chips, and the standard versions of mashed, boiled and baked potatoes (covered with cheese, butter, bacon and sour cream) then yes, the potato looks like "bad news." However, if we are talking about the plain old baked potato (which the FAO/WHO dedicated 2008 to the potato because of its nutritional and economical value), then no, this study has no impact on that.

I did that for 6 months and lost about 70 pounds(we no exercise). It has changed my life forever, it is incredible that my body only craves whole food(mostly rice and potatoes)! I went from 251 lb to 180 lb. I feel amazing. Unbelievable!

I actually ate potatoes for two years, just because I was dirt poor and wanted to buy something cheap that had all the nutrients I would need. I was not only fine, it was the healthiest I've felt in my entire life. Now I eat a more varied diet with beans and vegetables and rice, but I sometimes I go back to only potatoes just because I enjoy the way they make me feel.:) That's my experience with it, and I would suggest anyone try it for awhile just to see how it changes them.

When I was a child between the ages of 9 and 10, my family was suffering financially and we literally lived on a 100 pound sack of white potatos during a cold Montana winter. We fried, baked, mashed, chipped, and ate them raw. We made mock stew with potatoes with a can of corn. To this day I love potatoes any which way I can get them! We didn't starve, and we didn't rue another meal of potatoes! They, for us, during that long cold winter, were indeed a comfort food.

@@rachelcoleman4693I doubt that as well, with all due respect. However, the German populace during WW2, not sure which "Depression" they are referring to, were on much stricter rations than even the British. They were making black bread which is not tasty at all and eating fallen horse carcasses on the streets. So I have no doubt the majority of her food came from potatoes.
It would be like having rice as a major part of the meal in China or Japan. But even the Irish had greens or butter milk to help fill out the diet. And of course anything they could catch to eat.
Even hardcore potato dieters will use at least sweet potatoes, which is not even a potato to help with missing nutrients.

@@billwilliams9897 Yo Bill, I'll tell ya one thing that has worked for me is using "Smart Salt" or "Salt Lite" it's 50% less sodium and tastes EXACTLY the same as salt. It actually includes some helpful minerals like potassium as well. Also, instead of regular butter I have used organic avocado butter. MUCH better for you than traditional butter. Tastes great too! Hope this helps!

    • @billwilliams9897
      @billwilliams9897 2 роки тому

@@matocaster NoSalt is almost pure potassium. I have been using NoSalt for years in making my own electrolyte drinks. But you do have to be a little careful with it. Like for potatoes for instance.... they are also very high in potassium, so if you use NoSalt on them you could almost overdose yourself on potassium. Vegans and Vegetarians actually need salt to help balance out the potassium ratios. Because sodium draws water into the cells and potassium pumps water out of the cells, and you need magnesium to make that pumping action work. And our body has to have chloride from salt to make stomach acid. People who eat high carbs must limit sodium, because carbs ...just like sodium make the body store excess fluid. For every gram of carbs the body stores...it also stores 5 grams of water.

I started making a soup that is so easy and so cheap. Carrot potatoes celery tomato basil garlic simmer with a little water (not too much bc you want it to be thicker and you get a lot of juice from the tomatoes) puree about 1/4 of it and mix it back together. I add chopped spinach into the bowl after i reheat it. I make a big batch every sunday and it is my lunch everyday and has been for probably close to 6 months lol. I also have been eating a sweet potato at dinner just about every night too and i am far from tired of either. They are so good and so affordable and so satifying. Ive noticed that I just dont eat meat anymore. Was never my intention. I also have lost 10-15lbs but probably bc my portions are in control but i absolutely owe that to none other than potatoes! Yay potatoes! lol :)

Dr Hindehede in Denmark did similar experiments even earlier. One of his subjects lived on potatoes for a year. The experiment was supervised by 5 doctors, all specialists, of the staff of the medical school where Hindehede worked. They reported the subject, a young man named Madsen, stayed in good health and showed no loss of strength or muscle tissue even though he did manual labor as a janitor at the school and as a farm hand on his brother's farm.
The doctor's work bore fruit in WW1 when he was in charge of food rationing for Denmark. He put the country on a vegetarian diet of mostly potatoes, black bread, barley porridge, cabbages, and whatever fruit and vegetables grow in a northern climate, with limited amounts of eggs and milk. During this period of time the death rate fell to the lowest ever recorded in Europe. Diseases like heart disease, blood pressure, diabetes, hardening of the arteries fell by 30% to 40% and were still falling when the experiment ended.

There was, at one time, a widespread fat phobia (probably still is). I once had an argument with a doctor about the benefit of avocadoes. When you think about it what did our species have to eat for thousands of years? I suspect the vast majority of foods available were carbohydrates. But we need a variety of foods got optimal health.

    Saying "yes" to potatoes
Energy, micronutrients, versatility and just plain deliciousness make the case for potatoes to become part of a healthy diet. That's especially true when they're paired with foods high in protein and fiber and prepared in ways that capitalize on their zero-fat content.
These two recipes are a tasty place to start:
    Low-calorie potato salad
1 pound potatoes, diced, boiled or steamed
1 large onion, chopped (1 cup)
1 large carrot, diced (1/2 cup)
2 ribs celery, diced (1/2 cup)
2 tablespoons minced fresh dill or 1/2 tablespoon dried dill
    1 teaspoon ground black pepper|
    1/4 cup low-calorie mayonnaise
    1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
Combine dill, pepper, mayonnaise, mustard and vinegar in a small bowl, set aside. Combine potatoes, onions, carrots and celery in a large bowl. Spoon the dressing over the vegetables and toss until well coated. Refrigerate before serving.
Nutrition for 1 serving (3/4 cup): 77 calories, 14 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams fiber, 127 milligrams sodium, 1 grams total fat, 2 milligrams cholesterol, 1 grams protein, 2 grams total sugars
Roasted potatoes with garlic and herbs
3/4 pound small (2-inch) white or red potatoes
    4 cloves garlic
    2 teaspoons olive oil
    2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary
    1/8 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
    2 teaspoons butter
    2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Heat oven to 400 F. Lightly coat a large baking dish with cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine the potatoes, garlic, olive oil, rosemary, salt and pepper. Toss until the potatoes are well coated with oil and spices. Arrange the potatoes in a single layer in the baking dish. Cover with a lid or aluminum foil, and bake for 25 minutes.
Remove the covering. Turn potatoes and bake, uncovered, until they're soft and slightly browned, about 25 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl, mix with butter and sprinkle with parsley before serving.
Nutrition for 1 serving (about 2/3 cup): 104 calories, 15 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams fiber, 103 milligrams sodium, 2 grams saturated fat, 4 grams total fat, 5 milligrams cholesterol, 2 grams protein, 1 gram total sugars

You can tell people to eat more fruits and vegetables all day, but the
truth is, most people will not do it, why? Because a huge salad will
not sustain your energy levels through the day, here is what I mean... I
literally took that message to heart "eat fruits and Vegetables" so I
will prepare myself a 3 pound salad every day, and right around two to
three hours latter, I was starving to death, at least I felt that way,
so what I did was to start incorporating starchy vegetables like,
Squash, Beans, Rice, Sweet Potatoes, Potatoes, Cassava, Plantains into
my diet, and when I did, I no longer had this problem because these
foods will sustain me and more importantly, "THESE FOODS WILL NOT MAKE
ME GO HUNGRY FOR AT LEAST SIX HOURS OF CONSUMING THEM"!!! Now, some
will hold you up more than others, energy wise, but take cassava, beans
and rice, or plantains for instance, every time I consume those, they
will hold me up anywhere from six to eight hours latter... So this is a
good way to convince people to eat more starchy foods, because they
hold your energy levels up and prevent you from going hungry for lots of
hours!!! Now, while I consume starchy foods, this only makes about 40
of my caloric intake, I also juice and consume around 128 fluid oz of
juice every day in order to increase my antioxidant intake, along with
the protein, vitamins and minerals, but most importantly, to increase my
pythochemical profile, why? Because if you eat only starches,
eventually all this starch running around your system will get converted
into fat, and two, THEY ARE NOT NUTRITIONALLY DENSE LIKE FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES... And last, healthy fats like real extra virgin oil, nuts
and seeds, avocados, and coconuts will help you suppress your appetite
and keep you feeling fuller for longer, what do you think??? By the
way, I fast every weekend, so what ever excess I consumed during the
week, will get burned off while water fasting only...

    • @whollymary7406
      @whollymary7406 6 років тому +4

Yes, you are talking about the micro nutrients in green leafies and the macro nutrients in starchy vegetables or beans peas etc, we need both to sustain us but the potato is a vegetable that has all the amino acids and nutrients your body needs it is in fact a perfect food all by itself and starches do not turn into fats, they are burned by your liver which will always burn sugar or starches first and store fat from fatty foods such as nuts or avocado or oils so if you are to eat starchy veggies do not eat fatty foods with them

Most impoverished people cannot afford organic produce for every single meal. Beans are traditionally eaten and are a great food source, i agree!
