There is more than 1 flashing lights scenes. There is one when anti virus launches something that looks like hyper beam at team rocket and then you can see ash riding on porygon with terrified face while a huge circle which keeps flashing red and blue is behind them. There also is one when the anti virus launches another thing which makes porygon slowly fell while background is flashing red and blue lights. Shortly after that scene is a scene with porygon flying up and down while background is another red and blue flashing lights. All of the seizure scenes were made by the anti virus which nurse joy installed..

I never hated Porygon as I only found out about ESP later in life but I never let the idea get further then "oh that's a shame." In a way Porygon was one of my favorite Pokemon, I think it's cute. Good video and I like how indepth with the "it was actually Pikachu's fault" idea.
Ok here's the correct way to go Step 1. Put Porygon back into the anime, maybe give Ash or Team Rocket a Porygon [2 or normal for Ash but Z for Team Rocket] Step 2. Go to the original episode and replace the flashing lights with normal explosions Step 3. Make the Porygon line Rotom's rival, that would be hilarious

Porygons ban is basically like a real world unfair court trial. Locking up (banning) an innocent man (Porygon) while the real criminal is still on the loose (pikachu) they shouldnt have banned porygon and its evolutions. Its like banning dratini and dragonair for being in the safari zone episode or jynx for being in the jynx episode. They didnt ban dratini and dragonair and jynx got a reskin. What about porygon...

or they could’ve just used a regular explosion background or that in addition to what it looks like when pikachu uses thunderbolts instead of five second long flashing light sequences don’t know who would’ve thought so many lights were a good idea when they could have gone with regular explosions that would be less costly and more safe?
Finally, this fantastic video is back. Also why did japanese intro of pokemon anime season 1 haves porygon in it? Could that mean that porygon was originally planned to be a major pokemon? He is the 7th pokemon to ever appear in the anime because of the intro. Also one last thing, in super smash bros ultimate they reuse porygon's sound from this episode.
Porygon. One of the most misunderstood Pokémon in existence. Which is why he's one of my favorites. Taking the fall for company mascot Pikachu (or in reality, the animators), and stuck with a bad rep because of it. Hopefully one day, he won't be banned anymore.
Honestly, the guy who created the effects really can NOT think. Those effects were damn fast, they didn't think at all they just look and look don't think and their like "This is good there is nothing bad here"
Title's a bit... misleading. Why it shouldn't be banned didn't seem like the main topic of the video, but rather Porygon's ban was basically a sacrifice to save the series as a whole and it should be regarded as a hero for such.
Those parents blamed the animation effects, no one’s blaming Porygon but the company itself. They need a scapegoat. That following episode that Ash have to say goodbye to Pikachu is just another manipulation because the viewers are piecing it together and starting to see Pikachu’s the one to blame - but it worked. I must say the company has a top-notch marketing team.
Would like to see Porygon and Rotom (which can travel down electric cables and take over devices) work together in the animé. Also going into cyberspace could be related to going into ultra-wormholes and encountering ultrabeast in the Alola episodes. Bring Porygon back!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate that Niantic still added in Porygon, Porygon 2 and Porygon Z? Despite the fact that it didn't do anything, people still hated Porygon and Niantic still put it in Pokemon Go. Amazing risk
this is a really dumb take. porygon has never had a problem being put in the games. it's been a game corner prize in several, a gift pokemon in one game, and while it didn't make it into swsh, it's in the dlc. this is not a risk, porygon has never been prevented from appearing in the games, or even in other media. blue has one in the manga. it's just the anime.
Porygon shouldn't have been banned. Not even to defend Pikachu. Porygon should have appeared in a better episode and it's evolution line should have gotten episodes in the Johto and Sinnoh sagas. We all knew it was Pikachu. Pop culture blamed it on Pikachu. If the real culprit can appear in every episode and remain the face of Pokémon and keep on appearing in Super Smash Bros, why should Porygon be banned? And if Porygon is banned, then why create Porygon2 and Porygon-Z?
Electric soldier porygon isn't a bad episode. Its plot is unique. The side character was good. The only thing I would say is terrible about it is its animation. Some of the scenes are so badly animated that they didnt even bother animating porygon fly, they simply moved him up. It looks like one of those youtuber's animation that isnt even animation but pictures continously reused. And the explosions were lazy, 4 of them are simply red and blue flashing.

Ok there are some world records that are weird to me like the world record for longest finger nails. However, a world record for most photosensitive epileptic seizures from a tv show is just disturbing.

If porygon wasnt there, the episode wouldnt happen since team rocket would have no pokemon to travel in cyberspace. No problems would happen and ash's visit to pokemon center would be a normal one.
@@kjone5086 it was team rocket's fault really. But ultimately it was a mistake. As long as they don't repeat it, then it should be fine. It was a mistake on the animator's part, too many bright colors flashing too quickly. They didn't know it would cause that, and it was an honest to goodness mistake. As long as they don't repeat that mistake, then it is fine for the porygon line to be in the show.
I think it’s silly it got banned, I mean they must be able to write it into an episode that doesn’t feature crazy flashing lights. I was always gutted we never saw Porygon again
What I really think is dumb is that Porygon got not one but TWO evolutions. Once in generation 2 and again in generation 4. It was banned, but apparently it wasn't bad enough to be forgotten by the Pokemon design team.

While I agree that it would be better for Porygon to be blamed for the incident than Pikachu, I don't think that any Pokemon should have been banned, at least not permanently. After all, the problem wasn't Pikachu or Porygon themselves, but rather the show's effects.

Porygon is one of my favorite Pokémon like imagine Tails from the Sonic franchise actually owns one! Tails owning a Porygon would be cool!! Like he could fix Porygon Z and make it to Porygon 3!!!! And it would help Tails with information, the hackers , I think Sonic would like the little guy too, because it helped his best friend and I think Sega should own Porygon instead of Nintendo because they been rude to Porygon and it didn't do anything by banishing out of the anime!!! I'm surprised you didn't mention Porygon having a red and blue color scheme, making it all the more easier to frame. Serious question though regarding the notion of Porygon 'saving' the show by taking the hit - let's say this was a miscellaneous episode that didn't have a "showcase star" Pokemon and this happened (still at the hands of Pikachu), do you really think the show would have been cancelled or Pikachu would have been written off? That's a bit of a stretch, the hiatus and apology and pulling that episode would have probably been enough. That's interesting though about the connection to the following episode, never knew that. But also the whole evolution line being banned is a little silly - you probably are aware of Kadabra being banned after the Gellar lawsuit, with its last appearance ever being sometime in the middle of Season 9. But that didn't stop the rest of its family! In fact, in Diamond/Pearl Sinnoh the anime featured all of the 'ally' trainers from the game that fight alongside you with their respective Pokemon, except for one who was supposed to have Kadabra but they gave her Abra instead. So I don't get the point in banning the whole evolution line. Sure it's not as serious as seizures, but a lawsuit is a lawsuit is a lawsuit.
this video is kind of a dumb take. but it's not wrong. if that makes any sense. first of all, I can't quite see how anybody who's only exposure to the pokemon original series (ie kanto, orange islands, and johto) was through the 4kids dub, could see porygon as a villain. if your only experience to the original pokemon anime was the english dub, then you never saw that episode and you never saw porygon in the anime. and anybody who's older than the literal target demographic of the anime should be able to see that this is hardly something to blame on porygon. it would be kind of, almost, like if dratini was banned from the anime because it was featured in an episode where people were using firearms. and while I can't really speak for other people, I have a feeling if you pulled random Japanese people, they likely wouldn't have much of an opinion on the matter either. maybe not even Japanese pokemon fans. again, pretty much anyone who looks at this case should be able to identify that this was an issue of animation and it hardly makes sense to ban porygon from the entire anime just by association. in fact, for how much more aware people are aware of the effect flashing lights can have, it seems obvious that this kind of animation could have some kind of effect on people. I don't think that means the studios involved are to blame for not knowing it would have such an effect, but like, this is a clear case of cause and effect and porygon wasn't any part of it. the only people whom I could understand might have some personal feelings is the people who actually suffered from these seizures. maybe their family. I don't necessarily think it's so important that porygon should be allowed in the anime, that the possible experiences of these people should be ignored. but even then, it's pretty clear from an objective standpoint that this was a case of flashing lights causing a reaction, maybe some of those kids have since been diagnosed. if anyone thinks of porygon as a villain, it's the relevant pokemon anime executives who have decided that porygon must forever suffer as a scapeduck for their mistake. I think the more likely opinion of porygon is "boring normal type" or, "I wish that porygon could be in the anime again". I'm in the latter, I think it's a bit of a shame that the possibility of cool cyber-world exploration stories or similar concepts are blocked off and you can't even elaborate on the original episode with its evolutions. so the other half of the video is also kind of silly. this just goes back to the fact that it didn't make any sense to hold a pokemon accountable when the real issue was probably lack of awareness about epilepsy and other similar forms of light sensitivity. neither pikachu or porygon had to go, and no one's opinion of either of them should really have been affected by the events. but hey, this is presumably a decision that isn't going to change anytime soon, if ever. meanwhile, the idea that the goodbye pikachu episode was put right after it as a possible what if still sounds silly to me. I can't emphasize this enough, there is no reason to hold these fictional monster accountable for the lack of awareness of the condition that some people may have had, and the effects the animation produced. but I guess the pokemon company needed to atone somehow, so they chose porygon. and the fact that the episode was not planned originally is an interesting tidbit. lends a bit of credence to your theory.
it is likely that the effects of flashing lights on some people were not as well known back then. that's the problem. if they were, then they wouldn't even have the flashing lights sequence in the scene. but they didn't know, or at least it's likely most people would not have known.
I know the truth about that and yet I too wish Porygon and its evolution line weren't banned. Well, at least we have Green/Blue Oak's Porygon now a Porygon2 and Gladion's Porygon in the Pokemon Special/Adventures manga.
I think a Pokemon series without pickachu would have ended up being something like this weird manga in which Red/Ash has a Clafairy (the Pokemon intended to be the original mascot) maybe even a Dr. Slump like series IF they took the same route as the manga. I honestly don't know if that would mean that the series would be either dead/unknown on the west (probably).

Has anybody actually watched the real episode? The flashing lights happened 2 or 3 times before Pikachu did anything. The ONLY thing at fault were the projectiles that the anti-virus fired.
Porygon will always be one of my favorite Pokemon, even before this episode / me knowing about it. I remember finding him In Pokemon Snap for the first time, I felt like so cool hehe. He's awesome!
Clefairy and Porygon should be homies They both are gen 1 normal types (Prior to gen 6) with huge move pools and are special attackers, even tho they have moves that encourage the use of a physical set (Belly Drum and sharpen) Also they both got their entire careers ruined by the ####### rat

The Safari Zone episode didn't cause lawsuits or even get banned in Japan, 4Kids just decided to err on the side of caution and skip it.

Title's a bit... misleading. Why it shouldn't be banned didn't seem like the main topic of the video, but rather Porygon's ban was basically a sacrifice to save the series as a whole and it should be regarded as a hero for such.
Those parents blamed the animation effects, no one’s blaming Porygon but the company itself. They need a scapegoat. That following episode that Ash have to say goodbye to Pikachu is just another manipulation because the viewers are piecing it together and starting to see Pikachu’s the one to blame - but it worked. I must say the company has a top-notch marketing team.

this is a really dumb take. porygon has never had a problem being put in the games. it's been a game corner prize in several, a gift pokemon in one game, and while it didn't make it into swsh, it's in the dlc. this is not a risk, porygon has never been prevented from appearing in the games, or even in other media. blue has one in the manga. it's just the anime.
Why wouldn't it be? It's still been in all the games. Can't retcon the Pokedex.

Porygon shouldn't have been banned. Not even to defend Pikachu. Porygon should have appeared in a better episode and it's evolution line should have gotten episodes in the Johto and Sinnoh sagas. We all knew it was Pikachu. Pop culture blamed it on Pikachu. If the real culprit can appear in every episode and remain the face of Pokémon and keep on appearing in Super Smash Bros, why should Porygon be banned? And if Porygon is banned, then why create Porygon2 and Porygon-Z?
Electric soldier porygon isn't a bad episode. Its plot is unique. The side character was good. The only thing I would say is terrible about it is its animation. Some of the scenes are so badly animated that they didnt even bother animating porygon fly, they simply moved him up. It looks like one of those youtuber's animation that isnt even animation but pictures continously reused. And the explosions were lazy, 4 of them are simply red and blue flashing.

If porygon wasnt there, the episode wouldnt happen since team rocket would have no pokemon to travel in cyberspace. No problems would happen and ash's visit to pokemon center would be a normal one.
@@kjone5086 it was team rocket's fault really. But ultimately it was a mistake. As long as they don't repeat it, then it should be fine. It was a mistake on the animator's part, too many bright colors flashing too quickly. They didn't know it would cause that, and it was an honest to goodness mistake. As long as they don't repeat that mistake, then it is fine for the porygon line to be in the show.

What I really think is dumb is that Porygon got not one but TWO evolutions. Once in generation 2 and again in generation 4. It was banned, but apparently it wasn't bad enough to be forgotten by the Pokemon design team.

While I agree that it would be better for Porygon to be blamed for the incident than Pikachu, I don't think that any Pokemon should have been banned, at least not permanently. After all, the problem wasn't Pikachu or Porygon themselves, but rather the show's effects.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Porygon having a red and blue color scheme, making it all the more easier to frame.
Serious question though regarding the notion of Porygon 'saving' the show by taking the hit - let's say this was a miscellaneous episode that didn't have a "showcase star" Pokemon and this happened (still at the hands of Pikachu), do you really think the show would have been cancelled or Pikachu would have been written off? That's a bit of a stretch, the hiatus and apology and pulling that episode would have probably been enough. That's interesting though about the connection to the following episode, never knew that.
But also the whole evolution line being banned is a little silly - you probably are aware of Kadabra being banned after the Gellar lawsuit, with its last appearance ever being sometime in the middle of Season 9. But that didn't stop the rest of its family! In fact, in Diamond/Pearl Sinnoh the anime featured all of the 'ally' trainers from the game that fight alongside you with their respective Pokemon, except for one who was supposed to have Kadabra but they gave her Abra instead. So I don't get the point in banning the whole evolution line.

this video is kind of a dumb take. but it's not wrong. if that makes any sense. first of all, I can't quite see how anybody who's only exposure to the pokemon original series (ie kanto, orange islands, and johto) was through the 4kids dub, could see porygon as a villain. if your only experience to the original pokemon anime was the english dub, then you never saw that episode and you never saw porygon in the anime. and anybody who's older than the literal target demographic of the anime should be able to see that this is hardly something to blame on porygon. it would be kind of, almost, like if dratini was banned from the anime because it was featured in an episode where people were using firearms. and while I can't really speak for other people, I have a feeling if you pulled random Japanese people, they likely wouldn't have much of an opinion on the matter either. maybe not even Japanese pokemon fans. again, pretty much anyone who looks at this case should be able to identify that this was an issue of animation and it hardly makes sense to ban porygon from the entire anime just by association. in fact, for how much more aware people are aware of the effect flashing lights can have, it seems obvious that this kind of animation could have some kind of effect on people. I don't think that means the studios involved are to blame for not knowing it would have such an effect, but like, this is a clear case of cause and effect and porygon wasn't any part of it.
the only people whom I could understand might have some personal feelings is the people who actually suffered from these seizures. maybe their family. I don't necessarily think it's so important that porygon should be allowed in the anime, that the possible experiences of these people should be ignored. but even then, it's pretty clear from an objective standpoint that this was a case of flashing lights causing a reaction, maybe some of those kids have since been diagnosed.
if anyone thinks of porygon as a villain, it's the relevant pokemon anime executives who have decided that porygon must forever suffer as a scapeduck for their mistake. I think the more likely opinion of porygon is "boring normal type" or, "I wish that porygon could be in the anime again". I'm in the latter, I think it's a bit of a shame that the possibility of cool cyber-world exploration stories or similar concepts are blocked off and you can't even elaborate on the original episode with its evolutions.
so the other half of the video is also kind of silly. this just goes back to the fact that it didn't make any sense to hold a pokemon accountable when the real issue was probably lack of awareness about epilepsy and other similar forms of light sensitivity. neither pikachu or porygon had to go, and no one's opinion of either of them should really have been affected by the events. but hey, this is presumably a decision that isn't going to change anytime soon, if ever. meanwhile, the idea that the goodbye pikachu episode was put right after it as a possible what if still sounds silly to me. I can't emphasize this enough, there is no reason to hold these fictional monster accountable for the lack of awareness of the condition that some people may have had, and the effects the animation produced. but I guess the pokemon company needed to atone somehow, so they chose porygon. and the fact that the episode was not planned originally is an interesting tidbit. lends a bit of credence to your theory.

it is likely that the effects of flashing lights on some people were not as well known back then. that's the problem. if they were, then they wouldn't even have the flashing lights sequence in the scene. but they didn't know, or at least it's likely most people would not have known.

I think a Pokemon series without pickachu would have ended up being something like this weird manga in which Red/Ash has a Clafairy (the Pokemon intended to be the original mascot) maybe even a Dr. Slump like series IF they took the same route as the manga. I honestly don't know if that would mean that the series would be either dead/unknown on the west (probably).

Has anybody actually watched the real episode? The flashing lights happened 2 or 3 times before Pikachu did anything. The ONLY thing at fault were the projectiles that the anti-virus fired.
