Thanks for your work Vagabund. My family is from this place. Actually we still own the first house on the right across the border/ bridge into BiH territory. Nothing to celebrate unfortunately. The area is a vacuum and none of the two soeverein authorities assume their responsibilities. My late uncle was more bullish, convinced it would turn into the Monaco of the Balkans. He past away before the occurrence of any sign of it. The border patrols are there, though placed just outside of Sastavci, to spare the inhabitants the hassle of this Habsburg era relic when crossing the bridge for their groceries. I cherish my summer holidays in the 80’s, when I came to this place, lying in the very middle of a large European country, fishing in the little river, that I didn’t know was a border.
That “house of an introvert” looks like heaven to me. Such a beautiful place, thanks for sharing with us. Btw the taps outside the mosque are probably for washing your feet/hands before prayer. 🙏

You are so open-minded and thoughtful when you speak to others! Because you have travelled the globe, you’re educated and open to experiencing other cultures…something I encourage others to do. I think it’s ever more important, as sovereign borders are being invaded, and certain countries/governments have become hostile! The more we find common ground and appreciate the uniqueness of another people/culture, the better we become as a person. Traveling certainly helps to break down misconceptions, while offering the opportunity to form friendships…we can certainly welcome that!😊 Cheers!🇨🇦
I enjoyed this. Vagabond, even if you don't participate in vices, keep a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of vodka on you for those moments where you need to break the ice with people - they won't say no as quick when you ask for an interview!
I do find borders fascinating although often sad in the way people arbitrarily divide themselves, splitting families and creating tension and conflict where there should be none. Great video once again. You always find the most interesting places that most of us would live out our lives and never know about if it wasn’t for videos like this.
In Europe there are many such exclaves on borders e.g. Belgium and Netherlands, Switzerland and France where even half of the street is in one country and the other half in another. This is interesting that it is mostly rural and they still keep it that way.
@@zipel you must not have heard of the chemical pollution of water in quite a few urban and suburban areas in the US - adding chlorine to tap water is fairly common too to deal with bacteria that would otherwise cause issues 😅
Trivia about this Bosnian land: While Serbia recognizes Međurečje as part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the entire area is currently under the administration of the Serbian government. Sastavci is the neighboring village in Serbia.
Your Serbian is pretty damn good, as good as my Russian friend's, and he's here in Serbia for 2 years now. Congrats! I hope you visit Montenegro too, and if you do, don't miss Zabljak and Durmitor national park. That place is heaven.

Your videos are always really informative and enjoyable, thank you! Seeing you speak with those locals made me curious about a couple of things - how many and what languages do you know? And how much have you had issues with the language barrier in your travels when you did not speak any of the languages the locals would normally speak?

You are so close to my home town, Prijepolje. If you're around here, let me know, if I can help :) here is Mileševa monastery, with White Angel frescoe, one of the first images that was sent across the ocean.
Medjurečje represents a kind of precedent when it comes to disputed borders on the territory of the former SFRY (Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia). In order to get from one end of the municipality of Priboj to the other, the residents are forced to cross the state border between Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina four times, because all the roads in that area lead across the Bosnian island of four square kilometers. The final demarcation is eagerly awaited by about a hundred residents of Međurečje and the population of five local communities that surround the "Bosnian enclave", whose borders were defined by Austria-Hungary at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. Several thousand residents of the municipality of Priboj, as well as the municipality of Rudo in Republika Srpska, Bosnia & Herzegovina, hope for the same. The border checkpoints cause the most trouble to the residents of Sastavci Municipality, where the two states "separate", but also to the residents of the surrounding municipalities of Sjeverin, Strmac, Krajčinovići, Zabranica and Vučje. The unusualness of Sastavci is that it, by cadastral, belongs to Bosnia & Herzegovina, while all buildings from the time of the former SFRY, such as the post office, primary school, police station, ambulance and local community office, belong to Serbia. In most cases the tax is paid to both Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, because many locals have property in both countries, the official currency is the Serbian dinar, but in bars and shops they also accept euros and Bosnian marks. For the sake of the people who live here, let's hope this issue is resolved.
I know vary little about this part of the world. I knew a Bosnian guy who was very militant, lets say, and very pro US but hated Bosnia. He was in a war in croatia for 4 years.

The nice houses are a really common thing in Bosnia as well. Diasopra(people working in the EU) like to have really good houses in their motherland, while living abroad. Why? No clue
They earn good money abroad, and take house fittings back home to do up their homes. I worked with several refugees from the Yugoslav war, and they all did this.
