Doug, we have watched you step up your game. The great thing is, everyone can step up with you. I can’t wait to have some time here to really carve along with you. Please don’t ever delete your old videos
You are a talented carver, but your true gift is teaching/explaining. The way you break each carving down into simple steps makes it doable and understandable for beginners like me. Thank you.
Doug, you and your little steel magic wand continue to amaze me. With your little almost imperceptible cuts, you transform these little pieces of wood into wonderful creations. Thanks so much for doing these.
Thanks Doug for all you do to help out other carvers. I've been at this many years now and never a day goes by when I don't learn something new. I love your enthusiasm for our wonderful hobby! 🙂
Doug: You are masterful in your handling of a knife blade. Where others tend to use small gouges or tiny blades for such small figure details, you masterfully carve the finest detail with your inch and a half or inch and a quarter, or whatever blade length this particular knife is. No detail is too much of a challenge for you. I just love to watch your consumate knife skill as you create such wondefully detailed "tiny figures!" Please keep bringin 'em!!! Well done!
Thankyou so much Doug. Truly inspirational. Your gift to us mere mortals that are just starting out with a whittling knife. Love the content and it's free!! Thanks for the time you put into these
Doug, I gave one of my little gnome men to a friend. She took him to the hospital for a hip surgery, and she's had so much fun with him. Talking with Dr.'s and nurses about him. So, thank you Doug for inspiring me and helping bring a smile to someone's day.
Miraculous how much detail you get into such a small piece! And your calm demeanor as you teach is great . I have only ever watched a couple UA-cam videos from start to finish without hitting the fast forward button! I just watched two of your hr long videos in completion. Great job
Amazing transformation from a square 2” block of basswood, love it! I applaud you time and effort for us want to be carvers that are beginners Thank You 🙏 God Bless
Hardest one (as a beginner) i have attempted so far. Back to gnomes for a while .Learning Knife control and being a bit more gentle when cutting is my Trojan horse. Thanks for taking time to show us how to do it. Great teacher Thank you
I absolutely love these Doug! I am recovering from carpal tunnel surgery but I can’t wait to get back to carving and doing a bunch of these guys . Hope you and family are well
Fantastic again Doug, my house has been over run by little hillbillies and now I have someone to keep them in check! Loving what you're doing, I was starting to get frustrated, trying to progress to quickly, I'm following along this series, doing multiple carvings of the same thing (I've 30+ hillbillies) I can see my progression, cleaner cuts, speed picking up and just plain having fun with these little guys.
Excellent commentary..this is the cut and here's why...that really helps with new carvers! Woodcarving Illustrated many times caters to experienced carvers because they show more progress than what is explained from one photo to the next...
Doug, You are an excellent teacher. I look forward to your next videos every time. Thank you so much for your help in making me a better carver/ whittler.
You have the best voice for this. The way you talk through it all makes it seem so stress free. I just found you, and I watch you to hear you talk me through it =)
Doug I have been watching your videos for the last couple of years and you get better and better I love the one inch series, your a great teacher, and Im hooked on Carving , keep up the good work
Awesome Doug ! Watching your video on the 1X1 Gnomes was my first attempt at carving and I made at least a dozen of them. This 1X1 carving of the little man is going to be even more fun and I'm sure I will fill my living room with chips again. Love it! Thanks for sharing your talent and this fun hobby.
I really like this one! Answered a few issues I always had re: hands in pockets, pants overhanging the shoes, and lots of features that make the face more realistic. I’ve always had trouble with these. Thanks a lot!! Just what I was struggling with. Im going to make a bunch of these to practice. Im thrilled with what you have just demonstrated. Your instruction is top notch.
Thanks Doug. I have learned so much from watching all your videos.I mentioned the code "LINKER" when I called to subscribe to "Woodcarving". The woman I spoke with knew nothing of it. I thought you may like to know.Again, thanks for all and I look forward to your videos always.
Just found this channel, and it’s been so helpful. I couldn’t wrap my head around scale and where to put in the detail. The bigger the wood the more detail you need to add, which is well beyond my skill set. These small characters are perfect for me and a lot more enjoyable.
A great instructional. Mine worked out OK, but I had some problems with the piece of wood splitting easily, it had a grain structure I initially didn't expect. Thanks Doug.
Thanks Doug, love your video. I think 2 inch men are my favorite . Quick and done in a short amount of time. Please don’t forget to do a 2 inch snowman.
Truly inspiring Doug, thank you for sharing your skill with us. The way you impart character into these little guys with what seem to be the simplest of cuts and facets shows a great understanding of form and posture. I haven't even started whittling anything myself as yet, but be assured that after listening to your calm and confidence inspiring guidance, I'm going to start! Ok, - I'm off to the Amazon to buy some Limewood blocks and some of those bullet-proof gloves. (I DO nearly faint every time you slice towards your fingers and thumbs, and it must be a testament to dexterity that you still have a full set of digits. Thank you again, - I can't wait to watch more.
I just renewed my subscription for Woodcarving Illustrated magazine! I've ordered some of the books that you recommended. I've so much to do and my plate is full. These are cute little people. I save all your UA-cam videos and I can't wait to carve any of your projects.
“Maybe the Only one out there… but one of the best. Huh huh.” Great stand up comedy potential there DL! 😂 I can see you getting on SNL very soon. Huh huh!!
Very good work and great skill in your art, I am going to make some carvings, you will be my teacher and guide in these works, I am grateful for your videos
Great video, Doug! I am going to carve several of these little guys and compare the first to the last! Thanks for everything you do to keep folks interested in this wonderful art form!
Thanks for this great new video. I just started carving over the winter and love carving the 2” little guys. I am excited to try this one out. Lots of great tips. 👍
I really like this! the detail on the eyes and ears is awesome! I have been slowely improving my eye carving, mostly because every time you do a tutorial you add another level of refinement to how the eyes are done. I have been able to follow this and incorporate it into my other carvings. Thank you!
Another excellent video - You are a truly amazing carver and teacher, Doug! Love your authentic joy and easy-going humor! Been thinking...when will all these carved males finally meet equally interesting females??! Hard to find people who carve women.
Love these guys Doug! Couple of new knives landed in my mail box this week. Hopefully I can get started with a test drive on these guys next week. You have good things happening 😊. Thanks

it is really entertaining and educational to see the variety you can bring to a 1x1x2 carving. Thanks for all you do for us carvers.
I love this series. I don't have big hands so these little guys would be a lot easier to carve. Thank you!
Doug is the "Bob Ross" of carving!
Doug I love the character you imbue into these tiny carvings! It has been and continues to be a real pleasure to watch and listen to your videos.❤
You carved my late Dad's likeness in this one! Thanks ❤! Happy tears...

Thanks Doug. I have learned so much from watching all your videos.I mentioned the code "LINKER" when I called to subscribe to "Woodcarving". The woman I spoke with knew nothing of it. I thought you may like to know.Again, thanks for all and I look forward to your videos always.
