- New Amsterdam Travel Video- Amsterdam loves cats! And dogs too! They really treat their pets like people here and it's not unusual to find cats lounging around inside shops, bars & cafes. Amsterdammers like things "gezellig" (cozy & homey) and nothing is more "gezellig" than having a pet around. Besides, cats are an excellent way to handle any mice problems. If you're a cat lover, then join Elysia from Young in Amsterdam and Thrillist and her friend Hjalti (both cat owners themselves) and meet some of the most famous felines in the city. I was in Amsterdam a few days ago and I saw cats in Coffee-shops also. I think that it is a great idea to have cats in the Bars and in the Coffee-shops as well. I love cats! Thanks for posting this lovely video.

There was a cat at the Kattenkabinet when I went to Amsterdam last year. He was friendly and approachable, purred loudly when petted. Love Amsterdam!!

Thanks for posting Lilly. The two hosts are die hard cat people. I (Producer Jerry) am more of a dog person and am allergic to cats, but find them very cute. I learned a lot about their personalities during our visits.
Cats are ok in the cafe or even in the Coffeeshop. They stay off of the tables so 👍🏻

Cat Cafes are a great idea. Thank you for the delightful video. I love Amsterdam and have visited on many occasions. I also have Dutch relatives. I have had many Cats during my life. None of them have liked coffee. I think they know that caffeine is bad for them. It is also an acquired taste. Only one of my Cats ever had a "sweet tooth". As a kitten, he ate a large piece of Cadbury's chocolate, so I hid all the chocolate at home. However, he used to go out and return with some chocolate! I told him that chocolate contained poisonous theobromine... but he would not listen to me. :-) He lived longer than any other Cat I ever had! Perhaps when he ate the chocolate as a kitten, he produced a resistance to the poison...?
Thank you for your nice post, TheUncleBilly. We don't own cats so we don't know much about cats personally, but I'm sure Hjalti & Elysia would.. We will ask them. Funny, but most cats that we've encountered in the cafes and bars are indifferent to the food and drinks. They don't beg and customers don't really offer. Maybe the mice are enough of a meal to keep them satisfied. In Cafe Kopjes, the cafe with 8 cats, one of the cats was diabetic and did want your food. We had to remove the cake when he came around.

I have a lot of cats as pets. At one time I had four cats. My son and his wife have five cats. I am ok with cats in cafes. I am down to one cat at this time, a very large Manx.

I am also a cat 'owner' but also a protector. I love the concept of cat cafes. But I'm really asking myself, if it's good to have cats in bars or restaurants, where it's extremely noisy and stressful sometimes. Especially old Elvis. Is there a refuge for him in the loud bar? And it seems that the poor is all alone? What'd you think?

Thank you for your comments. The cats didn't seem bothered by the noise at all. In fact as you see in the video, many can sleep right through it. We also visited during the afternoon and many of these places get hopping after dinner. For example, the 2nd place we showed was Gollem and they just opened. At night, it's packed and I can imagine that can be very stressful for the cat. But all these cats are free to come and go...outside in front or many places have little gardens and back areas.. and other places in the neighborhood. When we contacted the cafes to let them know we were coming, some couldn't guarantee that the cats would be there when we were. You saw one cat was outside under the moped and another walked outside among the outside tables. So I think the cats are free to stay for the warmth and food or wander about with their friends....
Thank you for your answer. That sounds good then. I'm really looking forward to visit Amsterdam soon for a cat visit. Once I was there, there actually were cats EVERYWHERE. In shops, in restaurants, on the streets, in shops with cigarettes. It was lovely, but disturbing at the same time.
...And I'm not a "crazy cat lady", I only have one kitty. 🐈

There are no doggie cafes and not many dogs hang out in cafes or bars, but cafes and restaurants are very dog friendly. Besides bringing your dog to an outside table, many people bring them inside as well. Many places have doggie waterdishes, etc...

There is a pipe museum and a cat museum.. Maybe you can cross both together and get a cat smoking a pipe.

Awww...fantastic concept. Too bad Americans are such germaphobes and "allergic" to everything! Personally, I think having cats around is very hygienic...keeps the rodent population in check!
Thanks for answering Kristen K. I myself (Producer Jerry) and Elysia are Americans who like the idea of cats in cafes. Also in big cities like NYC, bars keep cats too for their mice problems.
Amsterdam Calling I found out recently that there are now around twenty cat cafes in the US. Obviously due to local laws they have the cafe and cat areas separated, but they’re really catching on now.
And most from what I can tell let you adopt their cats by teaming up with local animal rescues.
