True enough. I was born 150 km nw of Kansas City, raised 150 km sse of Kansas City, college 200 km ne of home, grad school 120 km me of Houston, first job 2000 km east of there in SC, second posting back at my college, retired to NC. Had temporary posting twice in DC and once 100 km SW of Chicago. I mapped those vectors on London as my start, and to live at those spots, I would have had to know 5 languages. Here it’s just minor accent changes. And I’ve only lived in a little less than half the conterminous states. Mind boggling.

In 1970, my wife and I travelled from Fredericton, New Brunswick via Quebec and Ontario. Crossed over to the US at Port Huron, across Michigan , got on the old car/truck/railcar ferry to Manitouoc, Wisconsin , drove through Minnesota to ND- Badlands, then south from Rapid City , down and west to Casper, Wyoming . Then north to Yellowstone National Park -lots of snow n May, tyhrough the park then north to Alberta . Final leg was through the Crows NestPass on to Vancouver and Victoria. I was heading for my 1st job as a Forest Engineer. But that’s another adventure.

I drive a Ford F250 diesel and I notice a great difference if I am driving 60 to 65 (good mpg) versus 70 to 80 mph plus the wind as you mentioned makes a pretty big difference for sure. While there there were eight or nine bald eagle flying on the thermals just yards away from us. Stunning and amazing. Saw a bald eagle on the sidewalk in Two Rivers, WI yesterday morning while taking my granddaughter to school. It was hanging out in front of a shop that claims to be the inventor of the ice cream sundae. It couldn't have anything to do with the roadkill in the middle of the street could it?? Nah, gotta be the sundae. Way cool too. Never thought I'd see one of those majestic birds that close.

Hi Mike and Mellisa! Talking about Chamberlin South Dakota. We have trailered our horses out to Custer State Park and camped at the French Creek Horse Camp and Elk Haven Camp many times and on our way out and back we stay at Chamberlain, north end of town there is an arena that I believe is owned or taken care of by a local horse group. Anyway, EVERY time and I mean every time we have camped there it has stormed big time, and the next day it clears up and we have had beautiful days. We have never stayed there that it didn't just about drown us out, lightning, high winds, and powerful downpours of rain. One of the storms actually blew over their small grandstand and we were parked about 15 feet from it and it fell within two feet of our three-horse slant with living quarters horse trailer. Horses were fine and so were we. Thanks again for taking us along and bringing up memories! J.R.

Your experience is certainly nominal with the Ford 6.7. My 2015 manages mileage of 20-ish over all on the road, varies a bit with speed, wind, and load, and then 17-18 at home close to Ft Worth. Two comments caught my ear. The first regarding passing the truck: "i punched it to get around". Folks simply cannot believe the performance of these trucks, especially on the highway with a head of steam. A few more seconds and you'd blow by 100 before you even thought of it.
The second comment was "These trucks are made for the road"... Yes Sir!! They rank high among the last of classic American cruisers.

Mike, 18 mpg at 80 mph into a stiff head wind is great mileage for your truck. If you watch your instantaneous mileage gauge at different speeds you will see a continuous decrease in mpg as your speed increases. This likely starts at around 45 mph where wind has a bigger effect. Your truck is not very aerodynamic. More aerodynamic vehicles see this drop in mpg at higher speeds. My Camry mpg starts dropping at around 60 mph.

As a non American - but having been a lot of places over there - I would say Montana is beautiful and diverse. Mountains, woods and some open land.

Hunting out here in CO took a forest road to trail to jeep trail to washout like you just kept going down got to the highway but the gate was chained so didn't want to drive back the way we came so we found a fencepost that had wire wrapped around it not nailed to it so we took it apart drove through and then put it back together as we did not want to be blamed for letting his cattle out. lol Went to a Mtn Man Rendezvous and ended up shopping like you and Melissa. Only I did buy a gun black powder but since it was a semi custom made in the likes of a Lancaster rolled steel barrel flinchlock (Mike will understand) 54 cal. full stock and yet my wife acted just like Melissa does with your camera lens, go figure!! I didn't get the kidney either! 😁 My 2016 F250 Super Duty gets about 14 to 16 mpg about 280 to 300 around our area from the country to South Metro area South of Denver. Some of the tunnels you went thru looked familiar and can remember many years ago going to Yellowstone and Devils Tower. Had a friend who was the Admin Officer of the park at the Tower, had to watch out for ticks and fairly aggressive little buggers came crawling over the floors of his cabin. The rest of the trip felt like they were crawling on me the whole time after. Yuck! But at least you had fun and seemed to have a great time.

So many places I have also enjoyed.... and hope to do so again! I also do all of the driving as I am a horrible backseat driver. Guess it is from all of the miles I used to drive for work. Thought of you at the road work site, but I did not see any rock drills so I guess the excavator was able to handle it.I always enjoy seeing equipment that I have sold parts to... anyway glad you are home safe and sound.. Both of you feel better asap.

Thanks for coming out to my side of the United States. I’m in Arizona. I was a sales rep back in the 80s and Idaho Wyoming and Montana was my territory and I loved the drive. I would make up through from Utah up through Idaho and Montana. It was so fun and beautiful, glad you made it back safe

Love going out there. My wife and I took our 2021 Silverado out west in 2022. 6,500+ miles, and it was so comfortable. Those new trucks are amazing. Can't wait to get back. BTW--That's a northern Oriole singing his little heart out at the 3:29 mark.

Great video, great trip, and great camera lens. Pictures were super! I wish I had known your route and schedule. I live in Sioux Falls, SD and you passed by on I-90 which is on the north side of the city. I live on the very southern border of the city so you were only about 10 miles from my home. I would have offered to buy you lunch and you could have used a break about then coming from La Crosse. Just a tidbit of local info- Chamberlain is not
Chamber-lane. It is known as Chamberlun. I used to be an avid walleye fisherman and we fished a lot at Chamberlain. Next time you pass by Sioux Falls, think about my free lunch offer. I watch every video and look forward to each one.

I have done a similar trip two times in the last two years.
On both trips, my passengers wanted to see things.
We left the interstate after we got out of Ohio. We did the entire trip out and back on state roads.
That is the way to travel!

MPG - Did you know the MPG estimates on New Vehicle Window Stickers are NOT tested at normal highway speeds??? They are actually tested at 48 MPH, which is why Manufacturers tell us 'Your Mileage May Vary' as not everyone drives at that speed. Weird trivia I learned when I sold cars.

You were within about 20 miles of my house in NE Indiana. Elkhart is less than an hour away. I used to be way into Nikon camera gear. I never did get to that size lens. I was always amazed at the people that thought their phones were cameras. It sounds like you had an enjoyable vacation.
