I don't mind AMC introducing people to some of the most epic music ever, but for all you folk coming from Walking Dead, don't stop here! Tom Waits has tons of incredible music.
Well said, friend :) its never too late to get behind the mule
Beth sang another Tom Waits song to the baby on one of the episodes: "I Don't Wanna Grow Up."
tom waits.nuff said.the guy is epic.
I love how all the Tom Waits fans who didnt come here from the Walking Dead are encouraging people who did come here from the walking dead to listen to more. Where as if people listen to a rap song on a movie/show and say thats where they got it from those people will tell you off and stuff like that. Funny how music shapes people differently
I came because I heard on the walking dead, however I have heard him before. If you have any recommendations that would be great.
I'm not ashamed to say, this song always brings tears to my eyes...
I feel so bad for people who don't find his music. His music is one of life's gems
most underrated musician alive today
I used to play this song for my very sick pup Eyan. He held on as long as he could. We miss you, sweet boy.
"With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip"
This man's a genius
I heard this song about a year ago and I ran across it again watching the walking dead so I came back and listened to this again...this man is a legend!! So amazing
Been a fan of his since I heard “I Hope That I Don’t Fall in Love With You” off his first album almost 50 years ago. There’s no one quite like him, best of luck, Tom, stay safe and well.
I actually think this is some of Tom's best singing: the perfect mixture of his early and late styles...he still has the whiskey growl going on but it's also melodic and somehow smooth. And the lyrics...damn, Tom, you outdid yourself here.
Your thoughts are mine, too. I know most all of Waits. This is a song that I might use to introduce someone to Waits, as it's soft enough not to startle, but it shows his lyrical and musical specialness. "Kentucky Avenue" is another of those, but maybe needs some preparatory comment.
Downtown Train best Tom Waits song. In my opinion. Still this song makes me weep like a baby.
I agree, though I know too little about Waits' total songbook to compare any variations in his vocal delivery. I'm no big fan and don't care for most of his songs, but this is what I consider Waits at his best--the ravaged vocals that still manage a tonal range and emotional punch, the strong melody and lyrics, etc. If he did more songs like this, I'd jump on the bandwagon.
hi Tim, my advice to you is buy "nighthawks at the diner" that's what I heard first, that was back in 2007, now I'm hooked. honestly try it. peace from west Yorkshire
Another great story teller, up there with Dylan
oh man, you cant even express how great tom is with words, just pure incredible talent
This is one of those Waits songs you don't just listen to. You can close your eyes and watch it.
This guy's like the awesome inspiring musician uncle that I never had.
Look this take
This man is our brother.
God bless him.
Habe the walking dead geschaut.... und habe den song gehört.... kannte weder song noch sänger.... wundervoll..... ich kann nicht aufhören, den song zu hören....
One of my favorite Tom Waits story telling CDs. MULE VARIATIONS.
I still get a tear in my eye whenever I hear --Georgia Lee. And oh the picture he paints with " the house that nobody lives in."
When I light my candles, I light one for Tom and one for me. Thank you, Tom. God bless you.
That's sweet
Been watching and listening to this guy since the mid 70's.
I remember when this came out in 1999 (I think?) and this song and this video felt so much like the small town where I grew up, where I spent breezy summer nights with friends driving the back roads under a sky drenched with stars, where I kissed my first girlfriend for the first time behind an old barn behind my parents house, where I watched countless sunrises over the long yellow fields while riding to school. Now that I live far away from that old place, the lyric "your old home town is so far away... But inside your head there's a record that's playing..." resonates so deeply with me. This song just takes me straight back to those days. Long time tom waits fan, truly deep, beautiful music.
+Joseph Roan Lovely description you gave there.
+Maeve Dunphy Thanks!
I hear ya... I've had a very similar experience.
Small town life is not really different from the big towns. My hometown had a pop of 567, but I have had friends from Chicago, Mlps, Atlanta, Houston, NYC, LA, etc and everybody has the same sorry ass stories, about nine of us are white, two of us are latino, two of us are black and most of us have an MA or better edu etc....
Long story short but Tom Waits usually nails the most obvious traits/behaviors of our experience in an easily digestible format.
It is fuggin' beautiful, Waits is a master.craftsman .
If you don't like it , then you're the problem.
My favorite Tom Waits is the 1978 Burma Shave concert. I don't dabble much into his albums and for a lot of bands I like for some reason I lean towards live performances over album versions. This song is a gem.
was the girlfriend your cousin?
Ich liebe dieses Lied. USA Urlaub 1999 - auf Dauerschleife gehört. Da war die Welt, auf ihre Art, noch in Ordnung 💖 - Für mich...
Always gets me right there. Thank you Mr. Waits.
Tom Waits is a musical genius.
2019, still holding on. 🙌🏼
Same here , what a song, TW, what a man 👏👏
2024, still holding on 🙏❤
I will proudly say I discovered Tom waits on my own ( and not by watching any TV show) and I have been in a month journey through his songs ... I never found any thing that matches my soul better .. I finished a painting yesterday while listening to him so I named my painting ( drunk on the moon) ... I wish that I had the ability to just absorb all the beauty that is made in this world like the beauty made by this man ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have been a life long fan and am happy to hear some of his stuff in some of the cooler shows. Love Walking Dead. Recently American Gods. But Tom is in himself a national treasure.
Best song during lockdown ever!
Tom Waits to some is an acquired taste, but once you get a taste you’ll look for more and it’s a beautiful journey of musical discovery.
I remember saying to my husband, someone needs to come out with something different musically, we bought this CD as soon as it was released and bam! Mr. Waits heard me thinking! Love every song on it!
My favorite artist of all time by a long way
i can remember a friend giving me o copy of bone machine on a c-90 cassette tape been a big fan ever since.
Great Song, ich liebe ihn
this is one of the most tender things Tom has ever done. and yet just as curious and chilling as any of his other work. our bard poet continues on his strange journey......
This is GREAT little tune. It moves my soul. The scene when he is Christ under the tree with a head dress of thorns is a nice touch.
They hung a sign up in our town, If you live it up you won't live it down. That first line places the listener in to the song and identifies you with the surroundings, Tom Waits at his best. A lyrical Genius!
I will literally never stop listening to this song!
literally?
moonlitme actually it’s been a while since I’ve listened to Tom but thanks for writing me that comment. I’ve missed his songs !! 🙏🏽❤️
Jerry Winston ya why?
Tom Waits doesn't belong to you. God forbid people get turned onto an amazing artist from a television program. This is a great song from a perfect record. I'm glad people are onto something outside their box. It's amazing!
Oh!... The depths of lamentations we must wallow through to find any real meaning in life. Woe unto you.
Some nights Tom is your only friend.
Only one you see, neighbor. 🍻
yup
No doubt... some morning too...
like ur idea
You got that right
such a touching song... tom waits you are awesome
So timeless it's hard to believe this is a 90's album.
Can’t get enough of this. So bluesy and powerful!
This song makes so much sense today, more than ever I guess. You'll find your solace here. 🙏
Homem de voz singular.Adoro ouvir, faz bem pra alma!!!
simplesmente perfeito! Tom Waits
Walking Dead brought me here.. but I have to admit that I don't regret looking this song up! Makes me feel happy inside. :)
BEAUTIFUL
What Jeff said.. I come back, over and over.. awesome piece of art.
Man this song makes me miss my great grandmother this was played at her funeral and then like 10 years later walking dead re did it beautiful man just beautiful
what a great song
Why are people so mad that other people found this through TWD? At least we found it and well this is a beautiful song. Everyone had to find it someway... Just let them enjoy his music.
Alvaro Salvatore Exactly. ♡
I found this from twd and its awesome and ive found tom waits
It might be nice that people have discovered Tom Waits however it gets really annoying when everyone writes the same comment about the walking dead over and over again such as "The Walking dead brought me here" etc
Couldn't of said it better myself.
Alvaro Salvatore yn
This song gives me goosebumps though I've heard it 300 times. I love so so many of Tom's songs, but I think this might be my absolute favorite. He seems to have dialed back his gravel voice just a notch for this beauty. His voice is just like another instrument here; it shares qualities with the simple, clean guitar and silky bass. The imagery is stunning.
Thank you beth for bringing me here. The walking dead 💙
I love Beth.
I always come back.
There's nothing wrong with a popular TV show bringing people here, the scene was very well done and the music fitted perfectly. All I'd urge is, as a Tom Waits fan, people previously uninitiated to his work check out the albums......They're cracking!
+Jez Creed True there is nothing wrong with that... However it does become a problem when people only mentions the show or movie the song was used in and all the comments are "The walking dead" or "The walking dead brought me here" Its okay the first few times but then it gets annoying
+DrCerebro Is it wrong for giving credit to a source that introduced you to the song? Yes TWD brought me here, but it was bc I heard the song and thought, "There's a cool Tom Waits song I've not heard before. I shall UA-cam it!"
there's nothing wrong with it, no, but the urge to tell everyone wears pretty thin, pretty fucking fast.
@@maxwatkins5166 , kinda like What about Tom? Or a plain old good song? maybe they should just acronym it "TWDBMH" "The walking dead brought me here."
and shit it all over any youtube page that was "paid homage" to in that show. Nothing against it. They paid for the song but Tom paid for it first.
2018 and still listening 👌🏻❤
The man speaks in my head every day.
Just a beautiful song, I could lesson it all day long. Thank you Tom. To my heart from you.
They hung a sign up in our town
"If you live it up, you won't live it down"
So she left Monte Rio, son
Just like a bullet leaves a gun
With her charcoal eyes and Monroe hips
She went and took that California trip
Oh, the moon was gold, her hair like wind
Said, "don't look back, just come on, Jim"
Oh, you got to hold on, hold on
You gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, he gave her a dimestore watch
And a ring made from a spoon
Everyone's looking for someone to blame
When you share my bed, you share my name
Well, go ahead and call the cops
You don't meet nice girls in coffee shops
She said, "baby, I still love you"
Sometimes there's nothin' left to do
Oh, but you got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on and take my hand
I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Well, God bless your crooked little heart
St. Louis got the best of me
I miss your broken China voice
How I wish you were still here with me
Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down
Then you burn your mansion to the ground
Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here
But when you're falling behind in this big blue world
Oh, you've got to hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
Down by the Riverside motel
It's ten below and falling
By a ninety-nine cent store
She closed her eyes and started swaying
But it's so hard to dance that way
When it's cold and there's no music
Oh, your old hometown's so far away
But inside your head there's a record that's playing
A song called "Hold On", hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
Take my hand, I'm standing right there, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, hold on
Babe, you gotta hold on
And take my hand, I'm standing right here, you gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on, baby
You gotta hold on, girl
You gotta hold on
You gotta hold on
The Walking Dead soundtrack has some of the best songs ever. Love this
People who just discovered Tom Waits must realize that when you become a fan of Tom, you become jealous whenever other people listen to him. Tom is like a friend, a confident even though many of us never met him. With his music, Tom Waits touches the softest and hardest parts of our souls. Even our best friends and lovers often don't share the communion we have with Tom's music. So you shouldn't be surprised if we're reclusive. If you listen to Tom you step into our own intimacy. Be respectful.
I am one of these people! At least i know that much about myself.
My favorite uncle loved 'cold cold ground' of Tom Waits. Then I heard this one on TWD; now I got 2 great songs that reminds me of him, he past away 6 years ago... Time flies. But music never fades.
Fantastic song. Brilliant!
Definitely on the Coronavirus playlist.
Sad
Don't play with the coronavirus with this song please, Tom waits is a great singer.
Thanks you
I listen to this world crying
You dick .. don't spoil my favorite song , no disrespect

2020, and we're all still holding on, Tom
i love tom waits
Excellent song and one of those rare gems that has been here since practically the beginning of UA-cam.
Before UA-cam!! Been the man since the 70s
Very beautiful music and song, one of my favorites
Thank you Amc,you gave me an other legend song.
Thanks walking dead, this song is actually bomb.
all tom waits is a beautiful bomb tragic and hopeful x

bone machine is a mental album by tom waits. if its raining and your landlord is a demented dwarf and you beat the devil at poker on a full moon in a bar in Ealing when LSD was on tap then tom waits is ya man xx
I hate her version. Doesn't click for me
Amo essa música
Melany HahnMEL amamos
Tom is a genius both lyrically and music!
An excellent music , perfect , calm, and peace behind . Tom Waits will be remembered best of all in all he did .
They edited out my best verse:
*How I wish you were still here with me. Oh, you build it up, you wreck it down. Then you burn your mansion to the ground. Oh, there's nothing left to keep you here. But when you're falling behind in this big blue world.*
It splits the song into two versions. In this version, they're together. In the version with your favorite verse, they've split up.
SHOW DE BOLA ESSA MÚSICA
TWD 3 temporada episodi 11 acabei de reassistir🥰🥰
Verdade
I see all these comments about Walking Dead bringing people here. Well, my love for Tom Waits and all his great music brought me here. He is one of the greatest artists of all time. For those of you who didn't hear of him until the Walking Dead, I recommend hearing all his stuff--especially the Rain Dogs and Small Change albums.
Also, if you like Waits, check out Howlin' Wolf because that is practically who he modeled his sound after.
And Captain Beefheart.
SpookyApparition Yes!
"Hoist my rag" is my favourite Tom Waits song
The Black Hat Writer I think they can like the album Closing Time too.
I dont watch The Walking Dead but im glad that it introduced the genius of Tom Waits to people who havent heard of him before.
...undoubtedly the best ..
THANK YOU FOR THE SONG TOM
Does my Favorite-ing of this count, since I've loved Tom Waits for about 40 years & have never seen an episode of Walking Dead in my life? Why, yes--I believe it does.
You're pretty old.
MWAHAHA!
It's sad that this song had to get attention from The Walking Dead before it became a little more known. Tom Waits is amazing, listened to him since I was about 10. 9 years later and I still love his music.
I was always afraid of walking in the city at nightime
But since i'm listening to Tom Waits if anyone tries to attack me, I would just gently bite their hand down.
One of our greatest storyteller, poesi performed perfect, I feel
Surprisingly, Game of Thrones led me to this gem. Never an avid listener of Mr. Waits, but when I heard it for the first time, time stopped.
You bet!
knowledge of good music brought me here!
Pats own back.
Nobody cares.
I care. Good job. I have loved this song since it came out in 1999. I have never seen walking dead, as I don't care much for tv. At least they are picking good tunes.
one of the last remaining Artists
I nearly shit myself when beth started singing this in The Walking Dead
Thank you Tom for this and many other masterpieces that you gave us.
The lyrics are so unique and touching.
Who are listen Tom Waits in 2049?
This is just so fucking beautiful
it´s just tom in is valentine days he is a cameleon is carreer is amazing
I loved that the Walking Dead used it on the show
Were is Beth Greene
@@ramonagerig3938 I do !
I just pray for Tom Waits. Shane MacGowan. and Tim Armstrong to make a Christmas album. Please god make this happen.
God the periods.....
there is no god that will make anything happen.. grip
Mike Costello Hi, I'm Mike Costello, and I'm so edgy and disgruntled that I can't even tolerate a simple figure of speech!
CaptainMorganThe3rd That was very Disgruntling.
Eric Lynch "Disgruntling" is from now on my new favorite word.
Great tune. Always been a favourite of mine,
am playing this song every couple weeks at open mike nights folks love it never heard of tom waites jeez where they all been
"Shitty songs" gets hundreds of million views but for this awesome songs, its just 3 mill. Unfair.
Ekdam khar ahe bhava👍
Thank you Walking Dead!!!💗💗💗
Who else likes his version better than hers?✋🏼
I've never seen Walking Dead but I damn sure have every Tom Waits album. At least he's in the R&R HOF where he belongs. He's not some TV show gimmick, he's a 40+ year recording artist that never sold out; he stayed true to his own sound from day one..
+TheNinjaSyrix
I use my brain quite well and quite often, thank you. I don't and won't insult people with childish name calling. My statement stands for itself; Tom Waits needs no walking dead fans, he's doing just fine on his own. Should people like his song on the show, more power to them and I hope they explore his massive catalog of powerful music.
As an aside, I recommend you reign in your anger in order to better respond and offer that counseling can help with outbursts of unprovoked anger.
True dat!
the is one of the lamest comments i've ever heard.
Tom brought me here...plus a wee touch of nostalgia
Billy Stewart how do you think this song got on the walking dead? He leased the rights. Sounds like a "sell out" to me. Now get the stick out your ass and take that holier than thou attitude and shove it up there.
Great song! Don't know much of Tom Waits, though, must listen more!
Yes! I should watch that again...Haven't seen it in ages....
Beth cantando 😢❤
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Literally brought tears to my eyes while at work and people kinda looked at me weird...don't know why.
Hold on Mark!
+Андрей Антонов Thank you friend, peace be with you.
I was kind of the opposite -- I've loved Waits for years and squeed like a fangirl to hear one of his songs in TWD. It's a small, small world.
A great way to find waits, listen to his other stuff. Half the time he defies genre categories completely
Amazing, amazing song.
