A comparison between Stenback, Fodera and a '78Jazz

- I got questions about some basses and their sounds.
So I made a loop and improvised a bit with 3 basses.
Changed between muted, fingerstyle, slap and some bridge pup. also I rolled the tone of a bit with the first 2 basses.
No compression, a bit saturation with the Neve 1073 Pre.
To me that Fender Jazz sounds the best. Great comparison, wow. Love the Fender!
Let me just say this: All instruments tested are all excellent!!! But the magic on the sound is all on your hands and knowing how to set your sound on your bass guitar EQ. This guy can even play and freaking cheap $279.00 Squier pbass and you’ll still amazing!!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏽
Your hands win! After that all three sound great and different. I love the super tight and fast attack of the Stenback B-String and the dryness and growl of the fodera which cuts through in a pleasant way but was overall pleased at the end with the old fender -> fingerstyle sounds rich and warm and slapping is just perfect!
Thank you 🙏🏽
Basses sound amazing but your hands are magic!! You make all of them sound funky
The Stenback sounds very Fendery!
The Fodera takes the gold medal in both looks and tone ! Also a more versatile instrument because it’s active .
I'm going for the Fender Jazz '78 🔥
Very good playing 👌🏿
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
They all sound great. The Stenback was rich and thick and each note had authority. The Fodera was a little brighter and thinner but not in a bad way at all. I really liked it as well but because it had a different voice. Even the Fender was OK but it wasn't in the same league as the other two. Again it's sound is situational and could fit nicely into most music styles. For me though, if I could only choose one, I'd have to go with the Stenback.
Thank you for your comment. It confirms again that the Stenback fits my style best. Although the other two are great also.
@@Roogbass It would be hard to go wrong with any of these. Everyone's ear is different. I really like Fodera's too and you can't go wrong with a Jazz bass.
@@nigelbaker73 truth, in the end most basses nowadays sound good. It’s just what you want to ‘feel’ and hear yourself. In a mix you can get a great sound with basses like Sire to Alembic imho. I feel comfortable with my current setup. Took me a few years.
Dear Rogier, you are an... endless inspiration!... All the instruments are outstanding!... But it's all due to your own talent, your own ability, your hands, your full immersion into music, - to make them sound in this excellent way!... I'm speechless! Heel erg bedankt! :)
Very nice playing, Rogier!! All 3 basses bring something to the table, but in your hands, the Stenback is ear candy.
Thank you 😊👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Stenback slap tone is nuts🔥🔥
Excellent video! Never heard of Stenback until now. I have over 50 basses, I might have to add one to the collection. :)
Thanks. The wait time for a Stenback is that long that it’s pretty impossible to acquire one.
Fodera notes are so clear and playability off the charts. Wish people could feel that via UA-cam….
Playability is second to none. Sound is sometimes to clean. That’s why I like the bolt-on more.
@@Roogbass yes standards are the best for all around
And above all kudos to a tasteful player!
Fabulous, musical, precise, effortless (seemingly!) playing! That Stenbeck sounds like what a dream of a bass tone sounds like in my mind. That Fodera is nice too, albeit a little more pokey and bright.
Yes, the Fodera and Fender are gone, the Stenback will stay with me to the end.
@@Roogbass Do you have any info/specs on your Stendback? Most of the ones I see are "similar looking", so I've wondered what magic sauce is going into these damn things that make them so awesome (and unbelievably expensive smh).
@@halcyo all fender like basses look alike. But the differences are huge. With the Stenback it’s in the choice of woods, the dryness, heat treated. He makes his own bridges, nuts etc. Feels and sounds like a 60 years old bass.
Stenback for studio works to me, but this Fodera just breathes and sings through the music! Just beautiful, as your playing :)
You are a phenomenal bassist, Are you a studio player in Europe? The playing, the gear, wow!
Ah waoooh, I'm depressed, I 've so far to go :) The basses are all great but your playing did it for me. Hats off to you pal, very musical, I absolutely loved that 👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
Thumps up for the Stenback!
Beautiful lines and excellent picking!
First of all any bass in your hands will sound like a 4000 dollar instrument. You are a true master. The Stenback sounds nice. 60s spacing, great for fingerstyle a bit harsh for slapping.. The Fodera has the mid 70s vibe but it's bone dry, lacks the sheen and smoothness that the Fender has. It's funny how a simple mid 70s Fender can always hold it's own even against the super boutique J basses.
Yes I understand what you say. The Fodera will be strong in a live situation with difficult acoustics, the direct and dry sound will be heard. The Fender will loose in such a situation.
But in a recording there are different ‘rules’
The Fodera is a $14,5k bass, the Fender around $3,4k but both are equal I think.
@@Roogbass wow 14 1/2 k for the fordera? I'll have the fender and I'll buy myself a nice used convertible for the rest lol
@@gimmeagig and I have 2 of those, but I don’t care for cars luckily😎
@@Roogbass Even a really nice car you eventually take for granted.Unless it's a british classic,, those keep breaking down. You can never take anything for granted with those. But a really nice bass that you connect with... makes you play better and it gives you joy every time you pick it up. And if you stay below the 5th fret it actually makes you money too
@@gimmeagig yes absolutely. I hope this pandemic ends, I wanna make money again. Had to part with nice vintage basses to pay the taxes ☹️☹️
I liked all three...very nice clip!!!
The Stenback seems to have more low, but they sound all very good. and Rogier is a 100% professional super groover 💯✌🏼
Great comparison, Fodera is my favourite ☺️
Ah nice! Most like the Stenback. The Fodera needs the love 😬👍🏽
@@Roogbass most are not biased like me 😂 but I love the highs and the aggressiveness, let alone the beauty of the Fodera
All sounds awesome, all a bit different, but this is all in the hands, , real nice playing :)
Thanks 😊
Very cool. What is the name of the color Jazz Bass 78? Is it cherry or brown?
I believe mocha brown is the name.
@@Roogbass Thank you, Rogier🤝
are those fat beams on there? great playing! quite expressive and no compression?!! experience shows!!
Thank you. On the Fod and Jazz elixirs, on the Stenback Dunlops if I remember it correctly.
Stenback is the winner for me ! next the jazz
As always your playing is amazing, very nice demo, I like Fodera first then Fender then Stenback, by the way I repaired my Fodera that was buzzing, I left it in the case for 2 months now till he get used to the weather in Dubai & I added 9 packs of humidity inside the case, now there is a slight buzz if you play crazy strong, but Fodera was very bad & they didn’t even think to send me another neck, because they know that all there new neck productions warp after a while, honestly they look Roos Royce every where but they are very poor company, I advice you to check the DTC bass made in China just have a listen, thanks a lot for your beautiful videos I always learn from your playing too much, have a good day, in the future if you have time for me for some lessons that would be great, best regards, & stay safe
Good to hear that your bass is okay again. Pity that you live far away or would have checked it for you. I’m quite handy and love to adjust basses. Thanks for the compliment!
I have liked the round fodera tone, the stenback is better for slap and gets some more love in the midrange I think! In this comparison the fender had no chance, although I'm a lover of the fender basses in general.
Passt zu Sonntags nachmittags...... tut so gut 👍
Fodera, stenbeck, & 78.
1.fodera
2.fender
3.stenback
amazing playing and feel!!!
Thank you 😊👍🏽
Came by to take a listen from your post on the talk bass forum.
Well which one do you like?
I think the 2nd bass was real nice...not sure of the model.
Your playing is very very good too
I sold the Fodera yesterday and the Fender is on hold. The Stenback is my favourite bass of all times. 😃
@@Roogbass seems like you have narrowed it down then!!
I like the fender Jazz myself...yours seems like a 1970s model.
I have an American Deluxe.....probably will keep it.
Anyways man you have some great chops!!!
@@thetimhendersonproject9262 correct, 78. But I will keep my 60ies fenders!
That Stenback is unbelievable for fingerstyle but I did prefer the Fodera and it's deep mids for slap.
Great playing!
Thank you 😊🙏🏽
What's your favorite? I really liked the Stenback...
Yes, that’s my favourite all time bass.
All sound good with your fingers connected to your heart !
May I ask where you get the first bass and how much is exactly yours ?
Thanks again for sharing
🙏🙏🙏
Thanks. I had a lot of basses, exchanged a lot for others. What you see are my own basses. The Stenback, I overbid and got it. I will never sell that one.
@@Roogbass it's obvious from your body language that Stenback is most unison with your soul, the sound is the Best (IMHO),but the connection between you two is on another level and it comes from ease of playing ...
Much Respect
One Love
🙏🙏🙏
@@AAAA-td2fl 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Man, I really dig all your videos. Super-dope sh**t!
About the basses - don't care, as long as you play them ;-)
Seriously: As I pretty much go Fodera (and still check out A LOT along the way) I favour the Fodera. BUT: The Stenback is killer, too, as well as the Fender
Thank you Christian!
All 3 are great! The Fodera isn’t a stayer for me I think, although it’s the most expensive one I probably ever had.
The Stenback fits my playing best.
Fenders always work, always.
what a nice and helpful video thank you! recently i consider those basses so thats very helpful to me~~ and my opinion is i fodera is winner!
👍👍👏👏as usual excellent
My favorite video of yours is the Fodera Emperor Deluxe 5 ash / maple (your most viewed video). It would be interesting to hear how the Stenback compares on the same track / playing style. That Emperor was PHENOMENAL in your hands.
Yes I know. Shouldn’t have sold that one. When I’m back from the holidays I can look if I have that track somewhere.
Thank you!
@@Roogbass I am convinced this video of the Emperor Deluxe 5 has made people buy Foderas (including me, although I have bought a standard). Fodera should give you a commission 😉
@@eneade that’s one of the better ideas of the last time 😀😀😀
@@eneade That Standard is still a killer!!!
Very good performance
Those fingers can make any bass sound good
Damn! You can PLAY!!!!
Are all three basses played passive or are we hearing the onboard preamps eq’d..?
The Fodera is active, but it was set to flat. The other 2 are passive.
Great sounding jazz, but kinda thin compared to the newer boutique guys.
The secret is the player, not the instrument. Although the instrument helps, is the hands of the master player.
Great video thank you !
Jazz Bass 🔥
Basses? Sure. But buddy YOU CAN PLAY!!
Killer video as always Mr Rogier 🔥🔥
Well thank you Oussama!
Damn, you're good!
👏👏👏💪👍😀👋
Fodera is a monster bass killer but the fender have a presence, fender is beautifull and sexy
Fender rulez
ahh, at last, amongst all of these poor youtube shredders showed up the guy who knows how to articulate!
Thank you 🙏🏽😊
fender is best!
Stenback wins
I thought you’d choose the Monarch.
@@Roogbass I listened with headphones and eve audio sc205 speakers. the stenback has some spectacular midrange nuances. but maybe i'm biased because i love fender
78
ow no buzzing as before, I was sure that this will happened like another bass j got from a while I left it in the wardrobe fro 1 year also & it get solved alone, thanks God, the Shame at Fodera that don’t know about this & they didn’t even know about something like this I had a very big fight with them without any result so I kept it in the wardrobe & now it become good finally, sorry to buzzer you with all that, I want ask these strings you are using here are DR or Fodera Or Elixir which size & nickel or stainless very nice sound & playing as usual Gold Fingers 😊😊😊 God Bless you & make us enjoy this bass playing always, I think the fingerboard you have is Rosewood or Paoferro, if you like & have time to give me some lesson that would be great, if yes let me know how we can contact & is it possible to record bass on one of my new songs single that I am releasing soon I make dance music, here is my webpage: if you want to have an idea: amrsalahmahmoud.com , thanks a lot & best regards, Amr
I've only picked up on this guy over the last couple of months
Beautiful playing of the highest quality
But he has feel in spades, its how I like to play, step away and understand timing
Oh by the way, jazz bass all day long it sounds phenomenal as a mass produced bass and it's like all boutiques are trying their best to sound like one
Awesome Roger xxx
