after I filmed it I was like "nahh this is too much, i went way overboard" and then I spent the next two days digging for all the mlm-er clips and was like no, never mind, I should have gone harder.
Becoming more anti-capitalist has gotten me closer with my family. We've been communists for generations since the early 20th century, so it's almost been a family journey to honouring our ancestors. My mother's generation had become social democrats, but over this last decade everyone has been on a journey further left. Being anti-capitalist has been different with my friend group though. Unlike my family who are French, my friends are English Canadian, and I love them but they get very uncomfortable when confronted with anything but the most bland and consensual politics. So they have found me irritating to be around when politics come up at the very least. We also don't have the same class background, and in these moments I feel it.
Hahaha the ads your videos attract (at least on my end) are so freaking hilarious because they’re ALWAYS weird scammy house flipping webinars, health supplements or random courses. The UA-cam algorithm is doing its best lol
Every time a younger person slanders (i.e., tells the truth about) Ronald Reagan, an angel gets it's wings. As long as people abuse Reagan, there is hope for the world.
I once complained about MLMs on the Radio for the entire Northwestern Alberta and got a few calls from the huns in the area who had once tried to get me into their MLM. It was glorious radio.
God, that video call skit was too real, with the tense "good vibes" lapsing into silent, unmitigated despair again and again. The trauma of being poor is so real, too. My wife and I both had fairly precarious childhoods and young adulthoods, so getting our heads above water was a total revelation. I wasn't radicalized by my (truncated) university education or idling thoughtfully over a plate of avocado toast or whatever. Entering the "real" world of employment and reaching "success" was the key ingredient. My present sense of security had little to do with hustle and a lot to do with circumstance and luck. Crucially, I recognized that the same was true of my earlier precarity. Recognizing that things don't need to be this way can be sickening and liberating at the same time.
You don't need to "normalize hating the greedy" to support socialistic ideas. All you guys need to advocate for is to normalize hate, which is the fundamental idea behind socialism.
OH MY GOD YOU SAID IT! I mentioned this realization about capitalism and pyramid schemes to my girlfriend, who is staunchly anti capitalist and tangentially but less into mlms. She seemed surprised at first but then just agreed. Who don't more people think about this?!?!
Mind boggling to me that after decades of evidence to the contrary there are always people willing to go for this, but as you say, the pandemic era in particular was ripe for it. And there’s a significant overlap with xtian fundies and new age QAnon adjacent people selling supplements and various wellness programs
It's well known for over a hundred years that capitalism is a horrible system that's based on the exploitation of the poor, but people still believe that if they just work hard enough, they, too, can escape poverty and become the next Elon or Jeff.
This reminded me of the “cults vs religion” discourse, but a more exact analogy would be “MLMs vs legitimate business.” Some argue that the cult/religion distinction is arbitrary, though most would admit it’s a matter of degrees (some sects are more “cultish,” in the pejorative sense, than others, but they all share certain defining characteristics) and it seems like you’re making a similar argument. But the need for money is so omnipresent, we can’t individually quit capitalism (or most can’t) except by going and living off the land in a commune (sounds kinda cultish ;)) Anti capitalists are atheists that have to go to church! I hear Unitarians are alright…
I'm so glad you mentioned that people need to update their definitions its so asinine like I saw Joy Reid say elon musk is a 'right wing trump supporting socialist' um okay thats literally oxymoronic but aight! And she keeps saying 'republicans dont want democracy they want socialism'... boo no they don't!!!!
The other stigma I'd love to see you debunk besides "poverty" is "lazy." imo lazy is a straight up myth, but the fear of that label has fueled many a worker bee and applying it to the unknown "other" (or well-known "welfare queen" because nothing screams royalty like food stamps and single parenthood) has doubled the satisfaction of the hustler while serving to further divide a working class that should be united in support of the fact that every human,, ESP EVERY CHILD, has the right to food, shelter and health. I'd add education if our current system weren't such a dumpster fire. Highly rec home school.
As soon as you invoked the DeVos name I started hooting & hollering because of course they are connected. Nepotism, babyyyyyyy! (Amazing video, as ever, you can tell how hard you work on all of them, this one especially!)
I've thought "...isn't that pretty much how our whole entire system works?" at least once during all of your videos on MLMs so this was basically the perfect video. Also, why did most of the people in those video clips sound like they were about to pop a vein ? scared me off of dropping a pyramid in the chat
It took me a long time to finally find the right time and brain availability to watch your video i know you worked a lot on and i'm NOT disappointed. Love itttt !!! Very well made, well thought, well delivered.
I love your work! My saving grace from doomerism is focusing on my art, even while working my 9 to 5. I realize that I have a bit a privilege and there but I think it’s important for people to find there own meaning outside of capitalism. If you are looking for content check out Dan Peña! Dude is completely insane!
This whole video is Kelgore crapping on MLM because it isn't the MLM(Marxist, Leninist, Maoist), but ironically circling back around and actually getting to what the MLM(Marxist, Leninist, Maoist) Inteligencia and authors' main critique of capitalism, through dialectical materialism, that capitalism is as a whole a Pyramid Scheme. So yeah, Marx and Engels were warning us of Hunbots all along.
I was amazed this was pretty much the only (coherent) video on UA-cam on this topic. Great deconstruction, and genius to explore from the viewpoint of a cancelled MLMer! Hope you get to do more videos when life permits
Superb video, KELGORE! This is why whenever "the C word" topic comes up in a discussion, I call it "Crapitalism." Here's hoping that the as-yet-unseen repercussions of this latest Covid pandemic will help further our cause! PS Anyone else find it hilariously ironic that most of the best-content videos on communism/socialism/anti-capitalism here rely on Patreon $$$? Crazy world, ain't it?
Thanks for the hard work you put into this hour long video. It was great as always. I've recently been thinking about how MLMs and Capitilism are so similar as well, so you've read my mind and it came at a good time
This is better than the Breadtube analysis on capitalism, given that they basically still support capitalism whether it's safest nets increased, or having capitalism as long as it's woke. Very bizarre and patronizing to be lectured on capitalism from one who has a lot of money. Examples include Vaush, Contrapoints, and Philosophy Tube. I also appreciate you mention the late 70s because that was the last time America had a fighting chance to oppose capitalism, which unfortunately crumbled because Reaganomics became a standard, which is basically corporatism. The US has had a synthetic economy ever since they moved past the gold standard. However the problem gets deeper, as the US currency was at it's strongest when silver and gold were a standard. Not just one sole indicator (gold standard or fiat). My problem with anti capitalists, and they come from the left wing mostly is that they think leftism is a solution (which is so useless because it's capitalism but woke), or liberalism (which is the status quo and basically center) and then the conflating of socialism and communism. Basically, you get either tankies, Che Guevara socialists, socdems, or woke bread tubers. Communism we know is a failure. The standards of living in Cuba, is bad. See the horrors of the USSR. Modern day China to an extent, although they are just technocrats. Socialism aims to be a fair proposal in practice but it fails because it doesn't take the full measure of communism. It tries to negotiate fairness to a greedy billionaire. There is an alternative and the people will prevail. The recovery of Japan after WWII indicates that as long as you have a cooperative economy where there isn't class war favoritism (capitalism is on the rich folks side, socialism is on the poor side), you can get an economy that can coexist and give incentives. With no taxes, and having it be voluntary instead, you have an incentive for the rich to fulfill charities. The poor can actually get out of poverty when you have a currency not based on fiat and printing it in excess to where their work is devalued or wasted, but it's fixed on the precious metals system, and giving them shares to a company once a week. That's class cooperation, and we should strive for that. Instead we have a terrible system that frankly makes me want the US to dissolve entirely. The evil billionaires dodging taxes yet using loopholes to pay a penny to none, on top of profiting off people's misery, such as Elon, Jeff, that being in charge of Facebook, etc. No society should allow a billionaire. Charities can be corrupt, but I'd argue taxes are 100% corruption. Your money going to things you didn't consent or wanted. These taxes, are also wasted on some very stupid things. I find it shameful the left loves taxation when California (a capitalist shit hole) absolutely cripples poor people. I'll never understand the pro taxes mentality. There is a clear path to set forth distribute economics. It worked in Japan, until Japan decayed into being solely super capitalist as the US. Hence why there are low birth rates in every first world country. I will not vote on the issue. Instead I root for the death of capitalism, where people can hold individual power to then rebuild from the ashes of a failed civilization. That's the inevitable.
Even if capitalism falls and is replaced with something akin to socialism, many of the main faults of our system may not be be fixed by socialism, which is too much resource usage and I'll health due to pollution.
Thank you for this video! I currently am down the 1 path and feeling pretty doomed, but this video made me feel so seen and validated in my feelings and beliefs! Also Anna's analysis has a great 2 part video on mlm

when u mentioned the difference between socialist communist liberal and leftist i immediately thought of someone on tumblr who capped one of your vids and called u a liberal i was like… kelgore my beloved i’m so sorry
Gets even more annoying when you realize that anarchists communists and socialists all call each other libs as a perjorative, and due to the nature of having to exist inside capitalism, there's going to be evidence supporting that conclusion, regardless of whether your vegan or not, own a stock or not, have a car or not, whether you cut your own hair and patch your own sock's or not, whether your attending a party to fuck your rich boyfriend or are attending that party to talk about how anyone can become disabled at any time, so it's in people's own interests to support disability systems.
I just watched this again, and I cannot express how much this fills my heart with gratitude. This was so well made, informative, and genuinely laugh out loud hilarious. It's this kind of content that I find to be incredibly valuable on a personal level. I've always felt generally isolated as an atheist in this country, but becoming anti-capitalist has made me feel more alone than I could've ever imagined. Your videos introduced me to the anti-work movement, and it's really helped me feel a lot less isolated or alone. So much thanks, Kelgore.
I hope you'll find people around your area to share this with too. It's so important and needed. I can't really picture having relationships with people that are oblivious to capitalism
The similarities between MLMs and Capitalism does make me a bit sad when anti-MLMers do "small business shout outs". Either the small business is a person by themself doing artisan work, which is fine but not a scalable alternative to the MLM industry as it gets projected as, or it's a small business with employees where the recruitment and exploitation problems come into play. I just want to yell "the only solution to bullshit pyramid schemes is if workers actually run the world!"
for sure. I definitely think some things are worse than other things, but in general most small businesses fail too lol so when both involve high levels of failure and exploitation it's like okay can we pleaseeeee just try something else haha
Australians in city's seem to be crazy for the self help schemes. They sign up for courses that teach them how to teach their own course while exploiting... I mean sharing/monetising their unique-ness. Then they send them on expensive wellness retreats that show them how to teach other people how to teach and so on.
Me and my gf are thirty and you're our inspiration that we are not alone, that things will get better, and that we need to get off our tushies and start saying what we think about the world. Just like our hero Kelgore.
literally praying on Monat’s downfall, it’s sad how many friends I’ve had get pulled into it since the pandemic started and anytime you try to say anything your the enemy
Whoever gave the advice to watch "Dan Peña" vidéos in here : i went and bow i'm scared even though i never even clicked on one of those 🤣felt betrayed 🤣
I watched him even when I was deep into the "saving capitalism by destroying it" fascist narrative and was part of a misogynist hate group. He scared me even then. But that's kind of the point, fear turns into anger, anger turns into hate, and hate turns into suffering. That's why I love the fear is the mind killer chant from dune. Because I've lived as a white supremacist religious ultranationalist, have been invited and recruited those spaces, so when I say shit, it's from experience.
This was a masterpiece!! love how you weaved the information through the skits. Tempted to restart the video right now and watch again lmaooo

As far as I can tell, she literally improved a whole zoom call MLM bit for over 14 straight, uncut minutes. Absolutely brilliant.

I was already on board and then you gave us John Green so I jumped off and climbed on even harder.
Australians in city's seem to be crazy for the self help schemes. They sign up for courses that teach them how to teach their own course while exploiting... I mean sharing/monetising their unique-ness. Then they send them on expensive wellness retreats that show them how to teach other people how to teach and so on.
Absolutely brilliant stuff, Kelgore.
Your videos are so so so well done, I just joined your patreon because I literally felt like this was too good for me to get it for free 😂💕
Me and my gf are thirty and you're our inspiration that we are not alone, that things will get better, and that we need to get off our tushies and start saying what we think about the world. Just like our hero Kelgore.

Do one on the subsidized agriculture sector were we ship in foreign workers to harvest our food.
