These videos are the greatest! Very clear explanations and easy to follow. If I miss anything I can just backtrack. Thank you! (I flagged you by mistake, clumsy fingers)
Kudos to you Tina. Love all of your tutorials and can watch them over and over because You fill your work with wonderful information. I would say you are definitely up in the top 15 Best of the Best Knitters on UA-cam.
Thank you soooo much for making this video! I have been wanting to try knitting socks but have never seen a video I could follow. Your the best and you make it look sooo easy. I have made socks on a round loom so I understand the technique better than if I never made socks before. I'm a visual learner so this will help me tremendously master socks😄 I hope - lol
Best short row heel ever! I've watched this video until I had the heel down and now I've incorporated it into my 'go to ' sock pattern. I didn't like short row heels until this one because they always looked messy, but this one comes out perfect every time! Thanks so much for sharing, and thanks for teaching with such attention to detail!! :)
Agrees wholeheartedly I can't stress how many other videos I'm watching n kept making mistakes and she is identifying them n helping me see the property stitches... So grateful for these vid is of hers. 🙏
I'm going through some serious life stuff and I knit socks too distracted me. I'm trying to anyways. I'm making mistakes and ripping my work out until I master my mistakes. And you are helping me find them n master them. Thank you. I ripped all my yarn off my needles and going to try n start over from scratch. My daughter wants thigh high socks from Mama. Hard to do when she's stationed in Korea and I can't measure her long daddy toes hehe
I had holes in my heels too. Thank you for this tutorial. It took me a while to get it and I'm sure I'll have to watch again for the second sock but I love it and my first heel looks great!
The two sides of my mitered heel looked different. The fix is to wrap from the back, as you pointed out. Thank you! That is exactly the missing piece I was looking for.
I enjoyed your short row tutorial & believe that I will use it with the sock I'm currently knitting. At the end of your video you mentioned the possibility of rearranging sts from instep to heel to possibly 'help' with a deep or tight heel/ankle area. I've discovered that creating a very small gusset (usually 8-10 sts in totality) prior to beginning the short row heel. This works great. I increase 2 sts every other row on instep, knit row, etc until desired # of sts is reached and after the short row is completed the mini gusset sts are then consumed. Thus creating a very comfy 'heel'...I'm looking forward to combining your technique with the 'Mimi gusset' that I use. Thank you for sharing your tutorials.
This is a great suggestion. I will see what I can do. The main problem is that I have deleted the video files that I used to create this tutorial so I don't know if I will be able to cut out specific clips. I will try to keep you informed of my progress.
I am so glad you liked it. I have to say it took me a long time and many, many trials to find what worked for me. I am glad it could help others as well.
Tina, wishing you a wonderful day. I have looked at many tutorials and many are perplexing. Yours are so clear; You are a great teacher. I wonder if you would ever be interested in doing the double stitch or otherwise German short row tutorial. This particular stitch doesn't need stitch markers or picking up of a wrap. I know that you are a busy bee. You just seem to be "one of the Best" at tutorials. Hats in the ring for You. :)
Patricia POmpei Patricia, there is always an opportunity to learn so I am up for the challenge. I don't know when I would get to it though. If you can send me a link to a tutorial that you have seen I will try to work it out and then record a tutorial of my own.
+Karol Santiago That would depend on how narrow you would like your heel. If you like a more narrow heel wrap more stitches and have less in the middle, if you like a wider heel then wrap less stitches. I think I typically wrap around 9 or 10 on each side.
509mjd, I have updated the pattern on Ravelry to include the information about using stitch markers. Here is the link to the pattern page. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/basic-socks---toe-up
Where is the term “acrost” from. I never heard it before UA-cam. Must be a specific area dialect but I’m wondering what area in the USA commonly refers to ‘across’ as “acrost”. I’d love to know. I’m Australian and most Aussies have the exact same dialect with minor variety in accent. Some southern AU states say ‘castle’ as per USA pronunciation and ‘chance’ and ‘dance’ as per more educated British. Fascinating
What do you think makes the difference so that you don't get holes using this method vs the one in your earlier short row tutorial? I get holes in the corners only. Thanks!
Harold Grams I can't remember if I suggest to slip the first stitch or not, but when starting the first row of the heel you should slip the first stitch. Then when you do your wraps make sure you pull the yarn fairly snug after the wrap. Also when you pick up your wraps and knit them, then slip them to the right needle be sure to make sure you tighten up the slack there as well. That should hopefully help. If I am not careful I do sometimes get little holes at the top of my heel. you just need to make sure that you keep that yarn snug.
Hello...I cannot quite get what you mean by "making sure you TWIST the stitch" when doing the heel. Could you possibly explain it to me? Please. I love your videos!!
Is the video mistaken in starting the first row with a knit stitch? The pattern I downloaded says to slip the first stitch, and so does the one that is clearly seen in the video. Note: I would advise anyone trying this method for the first time to run a lifeline through the last row of the foot just before the heel. I ended up putting one in with a tapestry needle so I could start over using stitch markers.
Tina, enjoyed watching this again! Question, if you don't mind.....how long do you knit the foot before starting the short row heel and do you allow for shrinkage? For example, my foot is 9.25 " so I thought I would knit the foot to 8 " [the heel would add another 1.75", allowing for .50 " for shrinkage.] Sound about right? Thanks!
Mel, I have yet to have any of my socks shrink, and I like a sock that is snug on my foot. My foot is also 9.25" and if it were me I would start my heel at 7 - 7.5" so that the overall foot length of the sock is slightly shorter than my actual foot. That way when I put it on my foot it will have to stretch a bit and will be snug.
Could you be more patient with my not understanding the heel part of knitting. I end up with holes. I would appreciate a more clear explain from your point of view. Thanks Margaret
In your written pattern under short-row heel using stitch markers, row 1 starts with s1, your video has you knitting that stitch and in row 2 it states to purl across to marker, there is no marker there yet as it is the first purl row. Am I reading it incorrectly?
Lin Geldmyer Lin, I will try to take some time today to review the part of the pattern on the first row with out the marker and get back to you. I think I changed my method about the first stitch after I did the video, you can do it either way. I think slipping the stitch leaves less of a chance of having a hole at the top of the short row heel.
I want to try knitting two socks at the same time. Last time I left one sock too long and when I resume working and do the other sock, i kondisi of forgot how to do the first sock. Wish you could help me.
Mirtha García glad you enjoyed it. It is funny that you should reply in Spanish. I am trying to learn Spanish and I didn't even have to look up what you were saying.
Bloomingknitter I figured it all out! Yeah, now I need to do the second sock. Can you tell me what yarn you used, the blue and green is so pretty! Thank you so much!
You lost me completely with the heel. Maybe I'm slow, but the Instructions are very confusing....The hardest part of socks for me is not the wrapping, but the picking up of slipped stitch when performing cuff down. I thought toe up would be easier, but not really. I'm so frustrated with trying to knit socks
Hi Maria, this is a short row heel that I created. I had tried many many different short rows and never found one that I really loved, so I basically took the concepts of several different short row techniques and combined them in a way that worked for me.
Sonia Guzman There is another method that I like if you don't like the wrap and turn. Here is another one of my tutorials that is for a short row heel without w&t, ua-cam.com/video/1GdV4S2Ev-I/v-deo.html
Wrap and turn gives me a major headache. I got completely lost and you started to sound to me as if you were speaking in another language! There has to be an easier way to turn a heel.I need another heel but I don't like German short row either.
You watched this wonderful, FREE video and, instead of commenting on how useful it is and how much you have learned, you decide to criticize her pronunciation of a single word? Shame on you.
No, shame on you. This comment will help her be more credible. Grammar and pronunciation is extremely important for teachers. No one said she gave a bad tutorial.
You're so clear and concise, I really appreciate it!
You are a very good teacher!!
Thank you for taking the time and effort to make such a detailed tutorial.
Thanks for watching!
Thankyou for sharing your skill in such a clear way. you certainly are a master in your craft.
These videos are the greatest! Very clear explanations and easy to follow. If I miss anything I can just backtrack. Thank you! (I flagged you by mistake, clumsy fingers)
So glad to hear that you have enjoyed and learned from the tutorials.
I just bought your pattern because this is going to be my favorite heel from now on.

You are awesome! I may finally understand the concept of the heel all credit to you! Thank you!

I love ur work so clear to follow👍I learn a lots thank u so much💞
A really good method and clear video - this is a vast improvement on the method I was using previously - thank you!
HS L So glad you enjoyed it.

Rebecca aka Becka Mercier Hi Rebecca, I haven't tried a mini gusset, I might have to give that a try on some of the yarns that have a bit less give.
This is a great suggestion. I will see what I can do. The main problem is that I have deleted the video files that I used to create this tutorial so I don't know if I will be able to cut out specific clips. I will try to keep you informed of my progress.

Her name is Jenny. Lol

Great tutorial and pattern. Where is the bind-off tutorial video?

This is so much more complicated than a heel needs to be! If you're learning, find another video. This set me back on my first pair of socks...

Can you share the link for the video to end and bind off these socks please? Went looking on your channel but can't find it.
Thanks!
Hello...I cannot quite get what you mean by "making sure you TWIST the stitch" when doing the heel. Could you possibly explain it to me? Please. I love your videos!!
Twist is the way she means put the yarn in front or behind and it looks like it's twisted when you come back to pick up stitch
I updated my basic sock pattern, and you can purchase it on Ravelry.
Is the video mistaken in starting the first row with a knit stitch? The pattern I downloaded says to slip the first stitch, and so does the one that is clearly seen in the video.

Thank you excellent tutorial.
Can you use any size needles? Or do you need to use size 0?
Do you have this written or charted? If so, where can I find it?

I am trying to follow your instruction as for the Gus set knitting however I still am not Happy with the result.
hello, at the end of this video you mention an up coming bind off video but I cannot find it. Can you help?
how many stitches did you wrap on each side?
Hello can you tell me the exact length and size of your needles than you.
You have a beautiful hand off kniting thank you for the video now i can knit sock
Fabulous!
Could you be more patient with my not understanding the heel part of knitting. I end up with holes. I would appreciate a more clear explain from your point of view. Thanks Margaret
What brand of needle are you using?

How do I purchase your printed instructions
I want to try knitting two socks at the same time. Last time I left one sock too long and when I resume working and do the other sock, i kondisi of forgot how to do the first sock. Wish you could help me.
Kind of forget
Gracias es una excelente lección
Mirtha García glad you enjoyed it. It is funny that you should reply in Spanish. I am trying to learn Spanish and I didn't even have to look up what you were saying.
Thank you soooooo much
How do I use a contrasting thread in the heel flap and gusset in cuff down socks
Is there a tutorial for using the stitch markers for the heel. I purchased your pattern and still struggling. Thank you.
Lin Geldmyer I do not have a tutorial using the stitch markers. If you have specific questions I will try to answer them. Just let me know
Bloomingknitter I figured it all out! Yeah, now I need to do the second sock. Can you tell me what yarn you used, the blue and green is so pretty! Thank you so much!
Lin Geldmyer That was Knit Picks Bare yarn that I hand dyed myself.
When knitting socks two at a time, do I work on both at he same time
Work through the heel on one sock and then go on to work the other one is my preferred method otherwise I forget where I am on the heel
I'm the same, I've tried to knit toe up socks twice now. I can wrap stitches fine. But picking up the wraps is so confusing.
Ett varmt tack från Sverige
What method is this short row heel? I’m confused. It doesnt look like a standard w&t
Hi Maria, this is a short row heel that I created. I had tried many many different short rows and never found one that I really loved, so I basically took the concepts of several different short row techniques and combined them in a way that worked for me.
Bloomingknitter Okay thank you. i’ve been trying different ways too - YO, shadow, german short row. All are interesting to do
Bravissima
I just cannot do the w&t! I always make a mess of it.
Sonia Guzman There is another method that I like if you don't like the wrap and turn. Here is another one of my tutorials that is for a short row heel without w&t, ua-cam.com/video/1GdV4S2Ev-I/v-deo.html
Bloomingknitter
Please god show me how to do this heel in slow motion
Couldn't I just substitute an easier heel? That one seems so complicated
Yes, you can use any heel you like. I have just found that I like the fit of the short row heel.
Wrap and turn gives me a major headache. I got completely lost and you started to sound to me as if you were speaking in another language! There has to be an easier way to turn a heel.I need another heel but I don't like German short row either.
You just need to keep searching to find the heel that you love.

The word, "across," is not pronounced with a "t" at the end. Sorry, but it hurts my ears.
I am so sorry about that. Maybe one day I will re-record this tutorial.
