Woooooww!!! I've been playing guitar for 27 years and this threw me for a loop at 1st! I'm finally get it but the pure simplistic genius of the open chords, sliding, mixed with palm muting and note choking! sooooo cool!! My new fav song to learn and play :)
haha this is hilarious i love Ed's humor. The ending cracks me up with the "i'm Ed Robertson and i'am the idol of guitar players everywhere" and the dead serious look he gives haha i'm surprised he didn't smile or laugh.
Love the satirical name-dropping. The true multi-instrumentalist and soloist in the band is Kevin Hearn, while Ed is more of a songwriter who uses the guitar. And both musical approaches are really important!
it was a hoot to meet you guys today. 45 minutes of my life that I will not forget. Thanks for the laughs and the singing on the way to the hotel. ( guitar lesson is too kewl . got me some work to do there :) )
Ed you freaking crack me up bro! hahah. Love the dead serious faces, and the sarcasm. Only you can do it haha! Glad to know i was playing your song fairly right for the most part! One thing i really liked, is what you said about the right hand! so true, i found this song challenging because that right hand had to be mastered. People drop there mouths in awe, because its such a fluid rhthym which lots of accenting on the guitar. amazing work! thanks for sharing bro!
This is sorta the style I'm trying to develop. He's definitely a great guitarist. And all those techniques add accent to the song. Better than "typical" chording.
To any and all interested he did a great performance of this solo/acoustic for the Junos songwriters circle 2020 on the cbc channel and you can see during the bridge(pinch me part) hes going from that same F chord to a G then Am-Am sus2- Am or hammering on and off the 3rd of the Am in open position and back to G. However you prefrer to phrase or notate it. But that section wasn't covered here. Its easy to pick up on if you have the ear, or just look up the song but for those who want a video with solid quality to see how hes playing it solo nowadays(even if just for entertainment) its a solid video.
if that 1st chord is F D G C..looks like 5th & 1st strings are muted...i believe that's an F 6/9.... very cool that he posts this lesson...and unexpected...thank u
Another great song that has a lot of palm muting is Save Tonight be Eagle Eye Cherry. In fact, the whole song does. A- D F and G, rinse and repeat. It's the palm muting that gives both songs their respective special sound.
Lol.... what I love about you guys is your not up your own asses. Your music is absolutely the best music around, and I say that as someone who plays the guitar himself. Kraft dinner with dijon ketchup is probably your only demand in your dressing rooms :)
Definitely man. I've never been big into the speed thing. It's all about repetition. I'd take a well written solo over a sped up"box" scale any day. That's why Dave Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarists.
@Kevin Fredrick Lol I just learned how to play this song, not from this video though. But the fingering is actually pretty simple, it's just the technique that is hard lol
oh, the fingerings are very simple...ha...haha....3:45 begs to differ...and yet, i have no problem with not being able to do that. ed robertson, canadian guitar god
I dunno if anyone has answered you yet, but just look up "guitar natural harmonics". It's the technique he used there to make that sound! Not to be confused with "PINCH harmonics". Totally different guitar technique. The basic gist of the natural harmonic technique is to have your finger only slightly touch the strings directly over a fret. Frets 5, 7 and 12 are the easiest to try it on! Good luck! :)
The "real skill" Lies in both. Both take practice and time and effort. Each have their own unique challenges. Both are awesome. It is unwise to belittle another style by saying it doesn't take "real skill." To say you don't like it, however, would be fine.
Ed was always the more polished guitarist and Steve was the one with the more powerful voice. Together they formed one of the best duos since Lennon/McCartney. Plus Ed has a great voice as well but its not the same without Steve
Ed is such a great rhythm guitarist, definitely one of my inspirations. I'm trying to learn a lot of their songs, they are one of my favorite bands.
He is just unbelievably attractive and the wittiness only adds to it. Such a great song.
This is just awesome. The original artist showing us how to play his own music. Thank you very much. Very unusual and very much appreciate it.

I never realized how good he was till I watched this and tried to play along
What a treat thank you for taking time out very much appreciated.

Thanks for the lesson Ed, for decades of delightful music, and for being a class act!!
Great how-to…fun humor to break things up. You gotta like this guy (even if I weren't already sold on his writing, singing and playing!)
it was a hoot to meet you guys today. 45 minutes of my life that I will not forget.
Thanks for the laughs and the singing on the way to the hotel.
( guitar lesson is too kewl . got me some work to do there :) )
Thank you! I've been trying to figure this out for a while now.
All the magic is in the right hand god damn he has magic in both his hands
You're awesome Ed! Thanks for sharing :)

what you don't see is him cracking up after the "i'm the idol of guitar players every where"
That was so great! Thank you
Totally agree! Very refreshing! This guy is awesome!
Nice...thanks Jian for a great show and excellent content. Cool tune keep em coming!
This is sorta the style I'm trying to develop. He's definitely a great guitarist. And all those techniques add accent to the song. Better than "typical" chording.
Thanks for posting this Q

His humor is so good
The video interlacing is a treat for the senses.

Love this band!! He talks just like he sings. Doesn’t happen too often lol
I can see why Pat Metheny comes to Ed Robertson for guitar playing advice.
Another great song that has a lot of palm muting is Save Tonight be Eagle Eye Cherry. In fact, the whole song does. A- D F and G, rinse and repeat. It's the palm muting that gives both songs their respective special sound.
@GuitarHeroPhenomSux comfortably numb ending solo live is the greatest solo I've ever heard!
You are, Ed!! You certainly are indeed! (The idol of guitar players everywhere.)
Awesome 👏.
Pat Metheny....LMAO....love you man. Thanks for the quick lesson
Anyone who likes this should watch the BATHROOM SESSIONS. Thumbs up to spread it!
Seems like a really nice guy. He has a good sense of humor as well.
Lol.... what I love about you guys is your not up your own asses. Your music is absolutely the best music around, and I say that as someone who plays the guitar himself. Kraft dinner with dijon ketchup is probably your only demand in your dressing rooms :)
Can definitely brag! 👍👍👍

That's the "Q Theme" written and performed by Luke Doucett just for us.
q on cbc Sure reminds me of "Spanish Bombs" Clash
I knew it sounded familiar! Totally Spanish Bombs
I'm so happy you made this tutorial I want to repeat a series of bad words at high volume. But I won't...but I want to.
Ed Robertson, opening was too funny - my favourite song from BNL...well, one of them.
Ed, yes you are!
@TheChesneyChrist great analogy. they are all great guitarists
when page left, it must have been a lot of animosity between them that still exists today...
have they even been on the stage together since then?
@chocolaterainlololo LOL! No, he's definitely just having a bit of fun with those comments.
I think it's awesome he metioned Alan!
what did the three people that gave this a thumbs down possibly have to say that would be negative?
How did CDN. guitarists make it until now without that conceited jughead.
Leave it to you tube to have some guy TOTALLY miss the point and not get the joke. Oye
Love his dry humour.
@ryancouture I don't think it's thinner than usual, I think his neck might be a "D" shaped neck which is thinner than the average guitar
It's just magic... :)
Jesus. Ed is insanely tight.
I never expected this to be the song he would teach....
thank you
I don't see him playing a B-flat in the first cord so I'm pretty sure he means add 13 cuz it's an open d
@Kevin Fredrick Lol I just learned how to play this song, not from this video though. But the fingering is actually pretty simple, it's just the technique that is hard lol
@eekleefeld How exactly do you add12 ? .. That would be adding another octave and therefor would not be adding anything ..
he is the idol
I learned how to play this in 5 minutes. It reminds me of my childhood though lol
Ed - Do your best to develop a sense of humor. It's a very useful trait as one builds a career :)
oh, the fingerings are very simple...ha...haha....3:45 begs to differ...and yet, i have no problem with not being able to do that. ed robertson, canadian guitar god
How do you do the little ring out high note at 3:39? The little "ting" to end the song?
I dunno if anyone has answered you yet, but just look up "guitar natural harmonics". It's the technique he used there to make that sound!

Geez. I think I'll stick to 3 chord songs for now. This isn't for beginners. Amazing song though.
I'm pretty sure that chord is an F9add12, not F9add11.
what song is in this intro?
can i play it with normal bar chords ?
"All the technique is in the right hand"
Too easy...
the F 9 add 11 i cant figure out the voicing
Webby Whale 100010
thanks
Glad to hear from Ed's tone that there's no bad blood at all between Page and the band.
The "real skill" Lies in both. Both take practice and time and effort. Each have their own unique challenges. Both are awesome. It is unwise to belittle another style by saying it doesn't take "real skill." To say you don't like it, however, would be fine.

If it's good enough for Bruce Cockburn, it's good enough for me, F9 add 11 in a dangerous time
UA-cam comments have made me a firm believer in the simple fact that sensitive sjws do not understand sarcasm in the slightest.
yes you are as far as i'm concerned.
They are folk singers form canada. I suspect he is making a joke because they are good.
@TheChesneyChrist real skill lies in both...just because you like one more doesn't make the other require less skill.
The big bang theory yaay
TABS!!!!!!!!!!
Oh Ed! Silly.
Yeah, I'd rather learn from this guitar god then learn anything from Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhodes, Dimebag Darrel!
He is joking...
Good but not the way barenaked ladies play it
I don't neeeeed any lessons to know how to rock!
well then you have no sense of humor my friend
they are so good especially raw but the cockyness could be toned down a notch
Anyone else have no idea who the people he lists in the beginning are?
