SQ321 turbulence: Singapore obtains data from cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder

- Singapore's transport minister says the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau has obtained data recorded from Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321. Singapore Airlines, meanwhile, has altered at least one flight route and tweaked its in-flight seatbelt sign policies, following the SQ321 flight, which was hit by severe turbulence. May Wong reports from Bangkok.

seatbelt is extremely important...this is a lesson to all passengers who always unbuckle their seatbelts more often.
Seat belts are utmost important but this is a pilot error for not realizing the weather radar to either fly in a different flight leval or divert to another route. All weather information is given in the flight plan and was ignored or taken as usual not serious etc and fly through the weather to save fuel etc.. computers are giving flight plans but if humans dont go through them then the name SQ will or any will be tarnished..
@@kanishkabakmi You're quite correct! The pilot and co-pilot should have calculated the risks of flying into thunderclouds such as cumulonimbus, nimbostratus and altostratus, orographic, mammatus clouds, etc. if their aircraft radar was sending signals back and forth to the airport control towers along the flight route towards the Irrawaddy basin. Note the Irrawaddy River Delta waters at the base consist of flows from north to south, with the ecosystem of cities, towns and villages mainly involved in agriculture, fisheries and tourism. Perhaps on that fateful day before Vesak Day, many of these Myanmese villagers ought to be interviewed to understand the wind, cloud-cover, temperatures and stormy conditions they witnessed at ground or hilly levels.
My sincere condolences to the family of the victim who succumbed to this terrible incident, and also a speedy recovery to the survivors in hospital. Tuesday the 22nd of May must have been something strange in the air. I was on Cathay Pacific flight on that day, from Johannesburg to Hong Kong. The stretch between Colombo and Bangkok was quite horrific: frequent turbulences hit our plane frequently, I managed to have my seat belt on almost for the entire journey. And food and cooldrink toppled over, and I was literally praying when the turbulences hit with violent ferocity. It was an extremely nerve wracking experience, not even the pilot can alleviate the situation. I suppose an air turbulence is like a freak wave, it can strike unexpectedly. When I arrived at Hong Kong airport I was somewhat traumatized and exhausted - and also afraid to board my connecting flight to Philippines. I can imagine the horror and panic the passengers and crew had to endure on the Singapore airliner. The ones in hospital are gonna need professional therapy and counselling. It's a long road to recovery. You are in my prayers. God bless.
Love and blessings from Cape Town, South Africa
It's a very rare and sad case for SQ. Please have empathy on this issue. Besides confirming that there certainly will be huge lump sum payouts from claims on the insurance policies of those affected passengers/victims of SQ Flight 321, will Singapore Airlines Ltd, the CEO and its Management settle this potentially expensive Class Action dispute via 'Out of Court settlement' if the families of those who died, got hospitalised and warded in ICU who underwent intensive surgeries for their spinal cord injuries and/or head injuries, yet end up paralyzed with consequences such as paraplegia (no sensation below the waist), comatose, semi-vegetative state, PTSD, memory loss, anxiety-depression, etc, requiring long-term future family, nursing, psychological and social work support for the rest of their lives?
Thank you for this.
@@cinammonroll902 You're most welcome! Give the investigators many months or even years to do their in-depth research to find out the whole truth, so that all the families involved have some closure. I'll just book the flight when I needed to fly. It's hard to predict such disruptions.
But from what I could recall, even the slightest bump or turbulence on SQ, the belt sign will be switched on. I took SQ many times tho.

It is very important to wear a seatbelt on an airline, and definitely recommended in southeast Asia. Turbulence can get pretty bad in the region around Singapore. I experienced it on a flight to Thailand.
Singapore is one of the best in the sky. I think something like this can happen unknowingly. No one can foretell what will happen in the future.
Seat belts can reduce the damage what will happen if anyone in the toilets.
Pilots didnt read the weather to fly in a different flight leval or diver to different route.
They thought like every day
It will be nothing.
Why didnt they watch the weather radar right in front and fly.

In case you are all missed it. One of the passenger interviewed said it was a sudden drop. NO ONE WAS PREPARED. The pilot never inform to fasten your seatbelt like how when the plane entering a cloud and expecting a turbulence.
It was more like the pilot and co-pilot activated the seatbelt ON sign, but it was too late! Within split second, the airplane experienced major, successive bouts of turbulence, jerking up and down with untold frequencies, G-forces and momentums! It was akin to taking a real rollercoaster 🎢 ride 37,000 feet above earth surface, but without any assurance of passenger safety.
They did not have time to fasten their seatbelts? How long time do they need? They had been sat in their seats already for several hours.
THIS IS HORRIFYING.
Flight crew did not read to weather enroute properly.
@@kanishkabakmiOh really? Well, that's concerning.
You can land anywhere during turbulences, such as landing your back on the seat arm rest
Great credit to cabin and cockpit crew! Flown SQ many times and they are a great airline!
For sure they already know what happened, but for whatever reason they don't want to disclose it yet
Is there or is there Zero in-cabin video surveilance? If no then no. If yes then yes.
Wishing everyone speedy recovery and RIP to the victim😢
Glad at least precautions are now made
If only the crew ensured passengers are all strapped in . Maybe too much love and tender care given to passengers, many Ang mor
Those who fear turbulence (like I do) tend to be a lot more dogmatic during rough air. One passenger said it got pretty bumpy and the aircraft climbed drastically before then falling 178 ft (the drop at tower of terror at Disney is only 113 ft). Experts here correct me if I am wrong, but it seemed the climb was not intentional and it was forced upward before plunging. Happened too quick for flight attendants to react, but as a passenger I'm immediately strapped down once the g-forces start picking up...
*So when will the investigation outcome will be finalised?*
Yeah lets find out what happened, no one knows what the heck ocurred, only assumptions until now
Wishing everyone a speedy recovery ❤️🩹
Pls modify the seatbelt instead , even the current std design wont help much drng the severe turbulence, there is no point when you are wearing the seatbelt without fastening it properly . Probably they need to come up with something that is more secure such as a car seatbelt yet it shld be similiar to a racing car seatbelt cum harness instead & it must be comfortable too
👍👍👍👌💪For the pilots and crew members.
U forgot the passengers ?
The flight data has been recovered? The plane didn't crash...
That must be like the worser version of a sciatica, this is so sad :(
Also those who likes to travel also must take risks no matter what mode of travel, that's the meaning of travel.

*Besides that cockpit voice recorder can also obtain CCTV or any form video recorder so we can investigate what happened during the turbulence like how many were not in seat belt*
You can't get data out of SQ321 flight. You have to mention the tail number of the particular aircraft. I'm sure Singapore Airlines continue operating SQ321 route with another aircraft as we speak.
well, sq321 is one of the most profitable routes. there are 4 flights from lhr to sin, 2 777, 2 380. one trip prob profit like half mil, so impossible they shut down the route just coz of this accident. SQ321 is still being operated, but by a diffrent aircraft. the aircraft in this accident is 9V-SWM.
How about interviewing the pilots? They know best. Instead of depending on data. Then we will info accurately first hand from horses' mouth. Now relying on Australia news, UK and US news for updates.

Why are injured SIA passengers not given a choice to be treated in Top hospitals by top surgeons to ensure accurate medical assessments & speedy recovery ?
Most likely they need to be stabilised first before they can be moved.
The hospitals treating the victims are private hospitals regularly used by expats, and they are among the top hospitals in Thailand.
Samitivej Hospital is one of Thailand's top hospitals, so at least as far as Thai hospitals are concerned, they're very good and certainly good enough to stabilize patients before transporting them to their next destinations.

Yeah , weather reports always frequent and pilots usually warn passengers if a bit of turbulence going to occur. I think those pilots were lax and complacent.,And you can’t be when flying a plane. I understand human mistakes, but if they are too tired to fly get a replacement.. Those pilots were unprepared. They brought passengers down but that shouldn’t have happened. Well, that's all fine and dandy, but that's all as respects contractual liability.
But there's also tortious liability to consider. And in that respect, of course the airline has a duty of care towards its passengers to bring them to their destination safely.
Of course in practice, I would totally expect the costs here to be borne by the appropriate 3rd party liability insurance cover (this may even be mandatory for air carriers to have that).😊

Just move on, don't be trapped in this overtly cautious toxic culture. There are much bigger problem in the world.
Let's face it, no passenger is going to take orders from these cabin crews. They are there to serve, not to give orders. You cannot force passengers to strap themselves down.
The sad reality is that many still view flight attendants as servants even though their primary job is to ensure the safety of the cabin throughout the flight. Their other services are their secondary job.
no lol, these cabin crew can give complaints that may result in a ban if you dont listen to their orders for **your own safety**
Well then if you can’t force passengers to wear their sealtbelts then they risk injury that’s their problem not the airline. Flight attendants play an important role of securing the aircraft , safety demonstrations, sometimes dealing with obnoxious passengers , lastly serving meals, I respect them for what they do they are not mere servants!
As much as I used to fly, and that's literally all my life, I never saw so far neglecting people on any airlines in my life. Most of people absolutely follow instructions, even just signs without any verbal notification. As we can understand from the current situation: people just started their meal. And photos from the interior show lots of items everywhere, while the shelves are sealed, means food went everywhere. People just were disinformed about the situation. I had one flight, where we got turbulence starting from the very beginning..people got nervous, and so crew decided to serve fast smth to switch attention..there were drinks first, then right after items to buy (btw these hell on-board shops shall be cancelled completely), and then right meal. The tea and coffees they decided to serve a way later, because turbulence would. Not allow to pure the drink into the cup properly. Sometimes, the crew takes s decision to serve in dangerous moments on their own or by the captain's order, following the idea to relax the passengers. When the cart appears on the aisle, many people try to use the chance and visit bathrooms, same, after meal. If there was no sign of awareness that indicated safety. That means this are not passengers who behave bad, that's just s situation. Perhaps, US ppl do have some odd behaviour on boards, but I mostly see rational people following instructions. Somebody could just fall asleep and half sleepy take off belt because if some discomfort. If flight was smooth, ppl felt safe, that could happen. No need to blame on injured. All passengers are in a horror now. Let's better wish all people safe flights!
You think and decide , when you take a flight you count probability, then you think seat belt count the chance, that’s how I start mathematics on the plane, choose one way to die, lift or land. Liift off seat back seat. High chance , land seat front high chance, middle is the worst chance. Then don’t think make it to the next country. Lucky if do.
