How to fix a motorised Folding Wing Mirror (that stopped folding)

  • In this video, I show how you can replace just the electric motor inside a folding wing mirror (or door mirror, if you prefer) instead of replacing the whole mirror, casing and all, at significant cost.
    The car I work on is a 2010 Citroen C5 (X7) with heated mirrors and auto-dimming, but this will almost certainly work on most if not all PSA group cars with motorised wing mirrors. The method and principles shown here will probably also work on cars from other brands.
    This covers the entire disassembly process and how to get to the electric motor that failed.

    FYI: Peugeot 508 has a different worm gear on the shaft, meaning this motor does not fit. Also can't find a replacement anywhere... guess i'm stuck with a winking car.

    Them motors seems to be used for lots of things in cars. I had an Audi and the remote locking never worked on two of the doors. I stripped the locking mechanism down and found this little motors inside. So I took the motor apart and cleaned the commutator with wire wool and refitted. That seem to work well and was free.

The passenger side mirror opens and closes normally for a few days, then gets stuck in the closed position and won't open for days. I noticed that it's loose in the hinge, now I'm wondering if my problem is with the motor (which apparently works sometimes) or if something in the mechanism is broken (since it's usually loose)?

The only problem I encountered is that when I dissasembled it, I didn’t keep track of which way the metal piece is fitted, the one with the grooves that fit in the mirror column, so when I tried to reassembly everything I didn’t know how to get it right. I'm tempted to believe that everything was simply a matter of dried out grease.
    Had a similar case in a 2007 Ford Mondeo, in one of it's rear door locks. The motor inside wasn't spinning as freely, due to dried out lubrication in it's axle. It got stuck in the unlock position, and wasn't able to turn back when powered the other way.
    It only needed a few drops of WD-40 to work properly again. Stupid things have sleeve bearings, and they dry up in time, causing this kind of problems.
    Have you tried the old motor after removing it? Is it spinning? I would've tried it again, coupled to that gearing, (without the PCB), just to see if it spins. Usualy they don't burn up, so as to get stuck, and the fact that it did move just a bit, shows just dried up lube.
    Good work overall though 👍👍👍👍

      @@comcarclub ...well...yes and no. I mean...sure, I don't want to see you going over the same thing all over again, that's not what I mean. I was just curious about the old motor. If you supply 12V with a couple of paperclips, in those slots, it will turn (if it's ok) or it will not turn if it's stuck. That's it. If you manage to do that, let me know.

    update july 24 you can access that troublesome spring without taking to mirror off the door - you just need to make a 35mm tube with 2 prongs that match the slots in the washer and depress (with force) then rotate. It will all come apart and you can change to motor whilst its all on the vehicle - note I got the wrong motor ( it had the wrong brass worm drive) BUT I managed to take the original motor apart and clean it and remove all the carbon and reassemble - bingo!
    One last note - when I took off the mirror, I managed to separate it from the actuator motor - meaning that when I pressed it back together - I broke one of the nylon actuators - be careful - that part can also be purchased for about $20 - good luck

    Hi, since you are quite familiar with X7's, I've got a question regarding the interior. How come SOME of the plastics inside feel like they're 'melting', as in, buttons for the windows feel mushy almost, same with some other things like around the center console. Mine's 2012 and 182k km, but seems it's been driven for 800k km because of it 😂

    • @comcarclub
      @comcarclub  2 роки тому

      Hello. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's a factory coating that makes everything feel more "premium". I've seen the same on BMWs and on the stereo buttons of my old Volvo. I think the coating degrades over time and "melts" as you describe, and worse, it attracts dirt and filth. I try to clean it off whenever I can but it's tough to do so. Below is good plastic so it isn't a problem to get rid of the coating, in my opinion.

    • @mr_nice.
      @mr_nice. 2 роки тому +1

      @@comcarclub ....well I can verify Mr. Comfy's words, since I had the same problem with the middle console, and I ended up painting it, along with the silver stips on the door handles. You can see it in my video about the gear stick knob fix on the X7.
      The buttons, are also coated with the same crappy material, and you can't realy do anything about them. The switch frame is different. You can remove it and clean it, and have it with the original plastic, but cleaning each button is a bit of a pain. I only managed to clean the forlding mirrors button, when I disassembled the switch, and I was too bored to do the rest of them. 😂😂😂👍👍👍
      But yes, the coating on the buttons can be removed with simple rubbing alcohol and kitchen paper, but the coating on the middle console....I scraped it away with sand paper, and then primmed the plastic, and took it to a pro painter to apply the car's color and a clear coat, to have a decent result. AND it doesn't attract dirt any more.
