Right?! When I first started playing the game I did a decent amount of Vanilla before moving on the Reign of Giants, and if I remember right, in Vanilla you either can't get ice at all or can't use it in the crock pot. Made life SOOOOO much easier in Reign of Giants once it was available as easy filler!
After my first time playing i watched the first episode of this guide and i improved from 12 days to 22 days. (Yes i'm very bad at games that try to kill me generally)

Yeah, there weren't really any good video guides back in the day when I started playing Don't Starve. I'm not sure that much has changed with Reign of Giants since then, but I figured why not make a good guide for it now!
I had not played this in a year or two and decided to come back to it. I was never really good at the game but all your guides are making it much easier to actually enjoy this awesome game. (Great videos)
Awesome! Yeah, it's the sort of game that has a REALLY steep initial learning curve that can turn people off, but once you get past it and start surviving longer and longer, it really is a lot of fun!
These videos are amazing, they've helped me so much! Thanks for all the effort you've put in man, you make it all easy to digest and quite entertaining 😄

Best food: honey nuggets. If you have 3-5 bee boxes, it produces a lot of honey and 3 honey and a monster meat is a honey nuggets. it's an awesome healing item it keeps you well fed, it doesn't costs as much, and it spoils slowly.
From a bonus points perspective, honey nuggets is actually negative value food! Honey x 3 (28.125 food points) + Monster Meat (valued at 12.5 if turned into a cooked egg) = 40.625 total ingredient food points. So you're losing 3.125 food points by turning those ingredients into honey nuggets. And although the nuggets have a decent 15 day shelf live, that pales in comparison to the honey itself that has a 40 day shelf life! Personally, I would rather just eat the honey raw! A better meat and honey recipe though is the Honey Ham - 30 healing (compared to nuggets 20) and 75 food points (compared to nuggets 37.5) with the same cook and spoil times as nuggets. Although it does require either a monster meat and a big meat or some other combination of more than 1.5 meat value. All that said, whether or not a given dish is good or not is situational. If you have a ton of honey and monster meat but few other ingredients and need healing, the nuggets might be a good idea. It all just depends!
@@salendrak wow... but, if you use two ice instead of the honey (i use honey, cause i have more of it than of ice) it turns into positive food trade.. and a bonus point for honey nuggets: wifgrid can eat it!
@@verestoyjanos5013 True, but at that point you would get much more hunger just making meatballs with a 3rd ice. Unless you need healing, in which case nuggets are probably fine. They're finding that coming back to the videos every now and then is also very useful. These guides are, by design, pretty information dense and hard to absorb in one sitting, especially if you don't have a lot of experience in the game. But when they play the game for a while and then go back to the videos, they have a lot of "ah-hah!" moments where things suddenly make a lot more sense and "click' in their heads :)
I’m very pleased to say this guide was very helpful. Feedback is important and mine is all positive, your voice is clear, important points and very detailed. Thank you, please continue making great content. I’ve subbed and I’ll be back. 👍
Another great way to spend way to much access monster meat on is fish sticks, since they can be used as a pretty good filler, and great for underground exploration due to the excessive amount of depth worms, and even better, if you have a base in the wilds in dst, you can use eels as the fish.
@@salendrak Last might I actually got the start of a base! Excited to build on it tonight. :) I will say - I had a very fortunate spawn… but this is my first game where I have a real plan rather than just faffing about foraging. :)

Awesome - glad to hear I've helped you enjoy this little treasure of a game! And yeah - I totally agree. In-game knowledge (or lack thereof) is definitely a bit of a double-edged sword. Could you imagine trying to get through this game with NO outside information? Even figuring out crock-pot recipes would be really really hard!!
Exactly, you need a bit of info for this one unless you don't mind dying repeatedly to learn! Even simple things such as knowing what in the world an item is that you need to find to craft something. I've stared down many of items attempting to figure out what the heck it is I'm lookin at lolol... But so happy I found your guides and now have a bunch of DLC to look forward to playing :)
@@salendrak I was cutting down my trees I planted carelessly when it just so happened to be a few seconds until dark... Bet you can guess what enemy came as a result of that.
I just discovered something. Catcoons are an EXTREMELY easy source of food (If you're sadistic) because unless you're a character with low damage, you can kill a catcoon before it attacks you ONCE with something as simple as an axe. This is because of the extremely long hissing animation, which allows you to get like 3 free hits in. This doesn't work if the catcoon has already hissed at something else, because then it will just attack you right away. And their hitboxes are completely broken.
It's true! The only downside is that they are a finite resource of food, because one they're lost their 9 lives, they're gone forever. But usually it will take you QUITE a while to exterminate them all, especially given the wide variety of renewable food sources that are also available.
Yeah - feels good to be back in the Constant! I'm leaning towards starting a playthrough series to mix things up a bit in between guides. These guides REALLY take a lot of time and work to make, which kind of keeps me from actually play the game. What do you think?
Salendrak ohh I would definitely watch a DS series or even terraria 🤩 it would be a nice change of pace and would provide regular content to come back to the channel 👌
That's the plan! I'll also be starting a highly edited play-through series in the very near future that will illustrate the concepts I talk about in the guide videos. Sometimes I think it really helps people to see the mechanics and principles in action.
Salendrak i am 100% gonna watch that series! Also i have a question. I dont have much money and im thinking about buying a dont Starve DLC. Should i choose DST, Shipwrecked, Reign of Giants or Hamlet? I
@@wudolph4255 Honestly, I would get them all! They go on sale pretty regularly (on Steam at least - not sure about console versions) and are a tremendous value! If I had to pick just one or two though, I would definitely go with Reign of Giants and then Shipwrecked if you only ever play alone, but if you want to play with friends, then go with DST (which can also be played solo and has a TON of unique content).
Salendrak yeah, i am 100% going RoG, but after that i’ll probably get DST with the starter pack thing, just because i rly want to play as Vortox :D thanks for the help Man!
Yeah - at some point I'll do stuff for DST (most likely). I don't want to get spread too thin though between different games, so it might not be for a while. We'll see!
Thanks for the guide, it is truly helpful to me. Although now that bunny stew is introduced in DST, I guess I couldn't abuse the Meatball recipe anymore 😂
Yeah, ironically, keeping at least some food in your belly is usually pretty easy! But I suppose "Don't Starve" has a better ring to it than simply "Don't Die" LOL
I'm not a super big fan of fish, as they spoil much faster than morsels, and fishsticks has the same nutrition as pierogi but half the shelf life and double the cook time (though that last one usually doesn't matter a whole lot). That said, it is sometimes kind of fun and relaxing to go fishing, unless you're doing it during the day and have to keep dodging frogs LOL Best way to fish though is one or two times each from multiple ponds. As you fish more from the same pond, the catch time increases, which then makes it take much more time to get the same amount of fish as you could have gotten from multiple ponds.
Maybe, but the short answer is there are lots of easy ways to quickly boost your sanity. For example, you can periodically harvest a bunch of cactus from the desert, find a place that has lots of green caps, make lots of jerky, set up bee boxes and make taffee, kill walruses to get a Tam o' Shanter, catch fish and make Surf n Turf. There are LOTS of ways to boost sanity!
Hmmm - in DST I think you can, but in single player I don't think regular fish (the ones you get from surface level ponds) count as meat at all, unless you turn them into jerky first.
Your videos are fantastic but I have to admit I feel very incompetent with putting this advice to good use (maybe because I’m on Xbox?) I’m excited to try the game on PC when mine is built, tho, and will come back to watch again as this is certainly a lot of info!
Sounds like a good plan to me! And don't worry if you're struggling with the game starting out. This is one of those games that has a pretty steep learning curve, not because there is anything particularly difficult or complex, but rather because there are SOOOOOO many little things you need to be mindful of that, not accounted for, will lead to an early grave! But definitely come back regularly, and use the "Contents" section in each video description to brush up on topics you need to work on :)
Check out my Combat Guide! That will get you up to speed on how to fight ALL THE THINGS!! Biggest thing is to always have armor on when fighting anything - especially when you're just starting to learn how to fight thing. But beyond that, all it takes is a little practice and experience, and you'll be a fighting pro!!
11:34 remember to think about what you gived to the bird. For example, using big meat and then adding 2 big meats, you will lose 12.5, even if the eggs by themselves didn't lose any hunger points.
Yup - I pretty much only use monster meat or small meats to make eggs, unless the food is going to spoil otherwise. That said, if I have a ton of big meat for some reason (Bearger killed a couple herds of beefalo) then my standards get relaxed. It all just depends on what and how much you have available!
@@salendrak yes. Well, I admit that in winter once I had so much monster meat that I turned 3 into eggs and made meatball, because I didn't want to lose 12 HP for 12 hunger points.
It's on the list! Spring guide comes out this weekend, then I'll do a few Terraria episodes, and then back to Don't Starve. Future Don't Starve guides I've got planned (order subject to change) include Summer, Caves & Ruins, Periodic Hound Attacks, and, yes, Advanced Food Production Methods. But never you fear - I'll get there eventually!!
It's definitely another great recipe to keep in your back pocket! I tend to like dishes that have higher spoil time though, unless I've got a bundling wrap and then yeah, Fishsticks is definitely easier to make if you have good access to fish, and especially in Shipwrecked!
What about sticks as filler? I may misremember things but wasn't there some particular recipe where 3 sticks could be used and it was the best recipe ever? That used to be go to food item in early versions. Might not be true post-ROG though, I just can't remember the specifics.
Eggs can be gathered from Pengulls in Winter (sometimes - they like to guard them) but the better way to get them on demand is to make a bird cage, catch a bird with a bird trap, and then feed any meat (monster meat has to be cooked first in single player DS) and it will pop out an egg for you! Corn and eggplant can only be grown through farming, and mandrakes are a limited resource that doesn't even appear in all worlds, but can sometimes be found growing in the ground somewhere.
Yes it can! Assuming I'm remembering correctly...it's been a while since I've played any Don't Starve, but I'm pretty sure it can. Which is extra nice because of how long Jerky stays fresh!
10:36 the big meat+3 berries is not worth it. If cooked, the berries restore 12.5 hunger, like carrots. I think about the maximum value of each food. For example, red caps. If raw, they hurt you 20 HP and restore 12.5 hunger. If cooked, they restore 1 health and hurt your sanity by 10. Mixing these number and the maximun value of the red cap is 1 HP and 12.5 hunger. It's a mix of raw and cooked red cap.
Yeah, there's different approaches on how to calculate these food values. I always treat red caps as zero for everything, as there really isn't any situation where you would want to eat them either cooked or raw for normal food purposes. But that's my approach - your mileage may vary!
Isn't dragonpie the best recipe though? More healing than pierogi. More hunger and shelf life than meatballs. Can use 3 twigs for filler. And perhaps most importantly you don't have to do combat to get it.
It can be pretty hard to get early on in the game though. Once you're established and have a good stockpile of seeds, it can certainly be good, but farming in single player isn't very time or resource efficient, and lots of people don't like doing it.
@@salendrak How is it not time efficient when you don't have to go out to combat or just wondering around hoping to spawn glaciers. I saw your gobbler farm and I'm sure there are other such exploits/contraptions that can provide some free food, but a new player (or even intermediate like me) won't know them unless you specifically go over them. For dragonpie you have to collect on average 3 fruit (I assume) and 3 twigs per pie. 6 collections at your base and 2 bird feedings. Seems pretty quick to me. I think you underestimate how scary and dangerous combat is for a new player. I just watched a 1-200 days video and the player died to hounds, charlie, penguins twice, bunnymen and a tentacle. That's 5 out of 6 deaths to combat. Also with all the combat; things like meaty stew only does half of the work. After 2 days you will have taken more than 12 damage even if your main newbie tactic is to run away, so you have to spend time making healing items as well. Dragonpie does double duty filling both the healing and hunger need.
@@Hedning1390 Maybe it's just my luck, but whenever I try to mass produce dragonfruit, I end up feeding most of the crop to the bird just to be able to replant what I just harvested with few left over for pies!
I love this game but I can't play it anymore I've been playing on mobile and my phone is way to small and laggy for me to even fight anything without getting stun locked I've died three or four times now because killer bees spawn in big groups and cause my game to lag enough for the bees to instant kill me and this is just walking around trying to fill my map
Yeah, I can see that. Playing on mobile presents lots of new challenges just because it's on mobile, and if your phone is lagging it would be even worse!
Of most channels on youtube specifically your one of the best content creators on the platform I really enjoy your videos I've recently got caught up on wagstaffs playthrough can't wait to see how far you go with your channel
Just in case Don't kill rabbits as you'll gain naughtiness points. Rather if u have extra food just let the rabbits die in a chest and collect the meat 3 days later if died
You would have to kill a LOT of rabbits to get enough naughtiness points to spawn Krampus! And keep in mind that your naughtiness decays over time and resets back to zero. So kill some rabbits, then wait a while before killing anything else that is an innocent creature, then go back to killing things. You'll get a warning sound that's a soft hissing noise if you're getting close to the limit.
@@salendrak well 6 points of naughtiness a day is quite low(decrease) when I'd catch 8 everyday and murder them. That's why I make Jerry out of 6 and 2 for crock pot which allows me to get 0 naughtiness points and still have plenty of food for next day.
Ok these videos literally made me go from dying in first 5 days to day 14 which is huge for me

Should i choose DST,
Shipwrecked,
Reign of Giants or Hamlet? I
@@wudolph4255 Honestly, I would get them all!
Love it man, amazing tutorial. Let's see many more ^^
Yes sir!!
Hands down best Don't Starve guides
Thanks! I'm just hoping they don't overhaul the game at some point and make them all obsolete 😆
because of these guides i made it to winter! thanks a lot,
Awesome! Keep it going!!
Man you are doing good work here, the level of editing is good!
Thanks! I'm probably a bit OCD when editing my videos, but I have fun doing it hahaha
Your guides helped immensely, I even took notes. Please keep creating Don't Starve content and maybe even Don't Starve Together in the future?
Yeah - at some point I'll do stuff for DST (most likely). I don't want to get spread too thin though between different games, so it might not be for a while. We'll see!
@@salendrak No worries! A lot of the tips and tricks you have provided can be applied to both versions of the game!
Thanks for the guide, it is truly helpful to me. Although now that bunny stew is introduced in DST, I guess I couldn't abuse the Meatball recipe anymore 😂
Yeah, it's not quite as good as it was before, but they're still pretty healthy!
me before I watched this video: I know how not to starve, lol.
me now: I need to watch this 8 times and take detailed notes
I approve of this comment!!
Amazing content !!! I love your work so much ! I really don't know what to say just... Great job man ! You just earned another subscriber ❤️
D'awww - thanks!! I appreciate that!!
Ur vids helped be more organized in the game
Awesome!! I'm glad they helped!!
Awesome food guide. Great job.
Thanks! May you never starve 😆
Great guide dude, thank you! You're so underrated!
Thanks!!
The opening is just my life playing... xD
But thanks to your guides, me and my friend are getting better in not to die due to starvation xD
LOL - someone should do a live-action movie of "If Don't Starve Were Real" stuff 🤣
@@salendrak It would be awesome xD
I don't think I ever died of starvation in this game. I HAVE died in numerous other displays of personal incompetence, but never starvation.
Yeah, ironically, keeping at least some food in your belly is usually pretty easy! But I suppose "Don't Starve" has a better ring to it than simply "Don't Die" LOL
Your guides are awesome, man! Thank you for making them ^^
Hmmmm, not sure if I should allow a comment from a lich king....
But ahhh what the hell - thanks!! 😆
@@salendrak How dare you even thinking about it! Maybe as an undead you will make your videos quicker... xD Just kidding of course, good luck ! ^^
Amazing guide! Thank you!
No problem - you're very welcome!!
Yesssssss thank you keep up the good work
Sir yes sir!!
Honestly love your videos . What do you think about fishing ? Easy source of food and great for fishsticks that are good for healing.
I'm not a super big fan of fish, as they spoil much faster than morsels, and fishsticks has the same nutrition as pierogi but half the shelf life and double the cook time (though that last one usually doesn't matter a whole lot). That said, it is sometimes kind of fun and relaxing to go fishing, unless you're doing it during the day and have to keep dodging frogs LOL
Best way to fish though is one or two times each from multiple ponds. As you fish more from the same pond, the catch time increases, which then makes it take much more time to get the same amount of fish as you could have gotten from multiple ponds.
I reached winter but totally forgot that there was seasons in this game and died in winter because I wasn't ready
Sounds about right! This game has an uncanny knack for punishing you any time you aren't prepared for something!
can you make video in don't starve dedicated to sanity and it's management. That's one of the three I actually struggle with the most.
@@salendrak Ok thanks for the tip.
G, best guide ever, pal.
Wow - thanks!!
Great job on the videos
Thanks!!
these videos are so helpful! thank you so much!!!!
You're very welcome! Let me know if you have any questions about anything!!
This is a nice guide.
Thanks!!
They are the most helpful basic videos I've found on the game. Ty. For stew, can u just use 2 meat and 2 fish to get the 3 meat value?
Hmmm - in DST I think you can, but in single player I don't think regular fish (the ones you get from surface level ponds) count as meat at all, unless you turn them into jerky first.
@@salendrak i saw a video that said they count as .5 meat. Ill try it and let you know. Also, if not, ill try the jerky. Ty.
@@nathanburgett1599 Yeah, they're .5 meat in DST, but not in single player where they just count as fish.
@@salendrak i get so confused 😆 there are so many versions all different. Thanks. Ill see what happens.
Your videos are fantastic but I have to admit I feel very incompetent with putting this advice to good use (maybe because I’m on Xbox?)
I’m excited to try the game on PC when mine is built, tho, and will come back to watch again as this is certainly a lot of info!
BUTTER MUFFINS are amazing if you live somewhere with a lot of flowers and mushrooms.
Or in King of Winter! Wait....😆
Thank you this is very useful!!
Happy to be of service!!
I died from a spider when wearing full ruins gears and as wigfrid
AFK in Don't Starve is generally fatal!
I’m brand new but I can’t make it past a week. 😫 I always does from some kind of animal. And I even start in a world with the help of full chests lol
When will the video about staking up in food (or getting food) effortlessly be out?
It's on the list! Spring guide comes out this weekend, then I'll do a few Terraria episodes, and then back to Don't Starve. Future Don't Starve guides I've got planned (order subject to change) include Summer, Caves & Ruins, Periodic Hound Attacks, and, yes, Advanced Food Production Methods.
But never you fear - I'll get there eventually!!
Thanks mannnn fr you stay helping me out
Any time!!
Great guide!
Much appreciated!!
damn, you have the same diction as the guy who did "from start to FNIS"
Hmmmm can't say i'm familiar with that one. Got a link so I can check it out?
@@salendrak ua-cam.com/video/sYEAnTdZb-s/v-deo.html
fishsticks > pierogi. so much easier to make especially if ur close to a swamp
It's definitely another great recipe to keep in your back pocket! I tend to like dishes that have higher spoil time though, unless I've got a bundling wrap and then yeah, Fishsticks is definitely easier to make if you have good access to fish, and especially in Shipwrecked!
I just realized that you can put 3 mushrooms and 1 monster meat in crock pot to get meatballs
Yup! Red Caps in particular are great for Crock Pot filler and work in lots of dishes!
thanks for your amazing content
Sir yes sir!!
i play hundreds of hour on dont starve, but i never heard of that wrap thing
It didn't exist in single player Don't Starve originally, but they added it with the same update that allows you to tame Beefalo. Pretty OP really!
What about sticks as filler? I may misremember things but wasn't there some particular recipe where 3 sticks could be used and it was the best recipe ever? That used to be go to food item in early versions. Might not be true post-ROG though, I just can't remember the specifics.
Depends on the recipe, as many don't allow sticks at all. The one you're probably thinking of though is Dragon Fruit Pie, which allows 3 twigs!
Can you make a video where to get those things? I played for 100 days and didn’t find corn, eggplant and mandrake. I found eggs once and that is it!

Ah yes, the flying spaghetti monster’s best friend:
Eternal Meatballs
In all seriousness though, great guide!
@@viofifteen4771 Thanks! And I love the connection to the FSM!
Starting to use this "filler" techniques in real life really soon
Please don't try to make meatballs with one part meat and three parts ice! 🤣
I'm sure the wiki has this info but I keep wondering if Jerky can be used in the crock pot recipes as meat or not
Yes it can! Assuming I'm remembering correctly...it's been a while since I've played any Don't Starve, but I'm pretty sure it can. Which is extra nice because of how long Jerky stays fresh!
@@salendrak Great, I'm glad to know! and thank you for the reply
Advanced food vid coming soon?
At some point!! Probably going to do Combat next, then spring, then maybe advanced food? Not sure yet...
@@salendrak mmmm...good point.
Do rot times extend in winter? That would make sense.
Yup! And they're faster in summer too!
@@salendrak thx.
Awesome
😁
Here for the pirogi recipe low on health and I don't wanna die
Took me a while to learn that one by heart, but it's definitely a good one to know!!
Tq for ur guide
You're very welcome!!
Just in case
Don't kill rabbits as you'll gain naughtiness points.
