  • UPDATE: I'm aware of all the comments on this cover regarding homosexuality. My only input on that is I am bisexual myself and don't ever suppress YOURSELF if this is something you may be struggling with at this moment in time. Live life to the full, embrace the gay!! I was also born and bred in the gayest town in the whole of the United Kingdom so it doesn't phase me!
Thank you to my boyfriend Andre for being the bloke that comes through the door to be all like OHMYGOD THE GYPSY ESCAPED - / vactordreamer
Originally sung and performed by the legendary Tony Jay, who is a huge inspiration to voice actors everywhere and will always be remembered, R.I.P. Thank you for bringing life to incredible characters with your talent!

Okay, but picture it: Frollo actually being a woman, disguised as a man, in order to work the job she has. Thinking herself so holy for ignoring sex altogether and living in an age in which women were considered inherently sinful. Then she meets Esmeralda, and not only can she not ignore the lust, she's shocked that she feels the way she does for a WOMAN. Now that would be quite a story.

I am actually glad you didn't change the lyrics.
During that time a woman loving a woman sexually would have been even more scandalous than a holy man in love with a gypsy. So assuming that in this song you portray a holy woman who's infatuated with a gypsy, it only amplifies how forbidden this is. It just makes the song sound so much more twisted and conflicted.
Also, I think it's cool how we've come such a long way to where we can love who we want to love.

What's great about this being sung as a woman is that it actually gives Frollo a tinge of tragedy. When you consider the context of Frollo's heavy religious position, and damnation, mutilation and execution of same-sex couples in Frances past, the internal struggle becomes much deeper, volatile, and eternally tearing than the original.

I think that it makes even more sense for Frolo to be so disturbed by his lust for Esmeralda if they were of the same gender (regardless of whether Esmerelda was genderbent to a male or Frolo to a female) because of how homosexuality was viewed by the church in those days. Maybe it's just me, but that's my thoughts on the matter.

I think the key in deciding which version of Hellfire you like most out of all the covers and adaptations is what you want the singer to feel at each part. The subtle little ways they sing each bit and what emotion they put into each word. I've clicked out of some versions halfway through the song because I just thought 'nope, that's not right.' To me, this is the very best. It captures the struggle between desire, duty, and anger at feeling forced to choose a side. Even down to the word, the emotion shifts in all the right places and this cover just sends chills through me. Also, while probably more due to the nature of singing over the score rather than trying to re-score it, this actually fixes my main problem with the original version. The singing got lost, which in a song as lyrically and vocally driven as this one, is quite a notable error. So, even trying to ignore my biased for female singers, I think this is better than the original even.

  • @wintrydrop
    @wintrydrop 10 років тому +70

Hearing this song being sung by a female makes it all the more powerful. Imagine a female Frollo (Freda? Frolla? Frida?) being tormented by having such a strong desire for Esmeralda. In addition to her hate of Gypsies, she believes her lust for the same sex is beyond sinful (being the incredibly pious person she is) yet she cannot help but feel this way. Imagine the internal conflict. The intense struggle with her hatred, her virtues and her sexuality.
Also I think "Righteous Soul" would have been a great replacement for "righteous man". Great deliverance of the song Sweet Poffin! :)

What makes me love this all the more is the concept.
Draw up your own reasons on this, but the thought of a prominent female figure, in these times at least, fixated- nay, obsessed with- this one individual named Esmerelda! That is single-handedly my favorite part about this. The slowly building tension as more and more of the singer's feelings come out.. what a testament to the passion. And in passion, there exists a dangerous inner circle. It only takes a single trigger to send the bullet flying, and the same goes for individual's desires.
It starts so calm, yet urgent. As soon as you hear, "Is driving me to sin," it becomes clear that these feelings are not benevolent. The danger in her voice is apparent, and with the power to send the Church after one individual, next to no one can stop her.
"I'll find her.. I'll find her if I have to burn down all of Paris!"
That line goes a long way to measuring just how large this obsession has grown, and every last chord from your voice tells what words can't.
TL;DR: This deserves attention the world over, and justly so!

You know, I actually like your version a bit more than the original. You're able to have this...presence I guess, in your voice that really makes it sound like your character is being corrupted by sin. Not in terms of woman liking woman, definitely not. More in the sense of coveting, manic desire, all that which the character of Frolo was guilty of; you just make it sound so much more tangible. Does that make sense?

    Lyrics
Confiteor Deo Omnipotenti (I confess to God almighty)
Beatae Mariae semper Virgini (To blessed Mary ever Virgin)
Beato Michaeli archangelo (To the blessed archangel Michael)
Sanctis apostolis omnibus sanctis (To the holy apostles to all the saints)
    Beata Maria
You know I am a righteous man
Of my virtue I am justly proud
Et tibit Pater (And to you, Father)
    Beata Maria
You know I'm so much purer than
The common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd
Quia peccavi nimis (That I have sinned)
    Then tell me, Maria
Why I see her dancing there
Why her smold'ring eyes still scorch my soul
    Cogitatione (In thought)
I feel her, I see her
The sun caught in her raven hair
Is blazing in me out of all control
Verbo et opere (In word and dee
    Like fire
    Hellfire
    This fire in my skin
    This burning
    Desire
    Is turning me to sin
    It's not my fault
    Mea culpa (Through my fault)
    I'm not to blame
    Mea culpa (Through my fault)
    It is the gypsy girl
The witch who sent this flame
Mea maxima culpa (Through my most griveous fault)
    It's not my fault
    Mea culpa (Through my fault)
    If in God's plan
    Mea culpa (Through my fault)
He made the devil so much
    Stronger than a man
Mea maxima culpa (Through my most griveous fault)
    Protect me, Maria
Don't let this siren cast her spell
Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone
    Destroy Esmeralda
And let her taste the fires of hell
Or else let her be mine and mine alone
    Hellfire
    Dark fire
    Now gypsy, it's your turn
    Choose me or
    Your pyre
Be mine or you will burn
    Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
    God have mercy on her
    Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
    God have mercy on me
    Kyrie Eleison (Lord have mercy)
    But she will be mine
    Or she will burn

Absolutely wonderful. I love how making Frollo a woman gives the scene even darker and more twisted implications of self-loathing and misplaced blame. She'd be like Joan of Arc gone horribly off the rails.
The song was PERFECTLY performed. The new range reminds me of Madame Morrible from Wicked, and it's still deeply chilling to hear her go madder and madder from defensiveness.

I'm not sure if you intended the new levels of meaning implied by the song being sung by a woman, but either way, it's brilliant. The song already deals with themes of repression as Frollo's inner conflict brought on by his lust is consuming him, but I'm just imagining how much more powerful the character would have been had Frollo been a woman. Again, I'm not sure if this was intentional, but it made your cover all the more interesting. At any rate, you did the song justice! One of my fav Disney songs and you really nailed it. Nice job!

Judge Frollo actually could easily be played by a woman. Especially since the church considers homosexuality a sin, it makes perfect sense that Lady Frollo would be especially tormented by her desire for Esmeralda... wanting her dead for making her have those thoughts and yet wanting her at the same time.

    • @annaknowsu

Zex Simeon She could be married, but doesn't have to be. Disney's Frollo is celibate and he considers himself a very controlled individual which is part of the reason why he is so angered by his hard to control desire for Esmeralda. If played by a Female the choice for a life of judgement on others & celibacy makes even more sense. By choosing such a life of religious control within the church she may have thought that she successfully "cured" herself of the homosexual thoughts of her youth until Esmeralda came along and popped that bubble. In real life this is often exactly what happens with these gay religious types who get heavily involved in their place of worship to keep themselves in denial anyway, so it fits. I live in NYC and Shakespeare plays here often have male roles played by females if it can easily be done so without changing the play much. Often they just set the play to a later time to explain this, but sometimes they just make it a version of Earth where women just had these societal roles available back then. Either way the audience never complains. I think this is one of those roles that could easily be played by either a male or a female without having to change the script. (except for the couple of times Frollo refers to himself as a "good man". They'd have to change that to "good soul." No biggie.)

Essentially, serving as a shorter and even 'purer' version of maiden. It also has the same number of syllables, thus allowing it to fit into the song very well while having a very appropriate meaning.

Y'know, a woman singing this song with Esmerelda still being a chick does add another layer to the song. Back in that time, homosexuality was considered unholy, and for a woman of high standing(like "Mistress Frollo") to have something for a Gypsy girl was pretty bad at the time.
Not saying homosexuality is bad, but it does add another reason why you shouldn't be like Frollo: It just makes gay people look bad.
However, the song was still really good, and even more emotional than before. Definitely worth placing a "Like".

On a side note, it blows my mind that you can do this and also Thumbelina, the most delicate animated voice I can think of. You have quite the career ahead of you.
I think you make the character more sympathetic because through the power there's this hint of sweetness of your voice, but that adds an even greater dimension. And I love that you didn't shy away from a lesbian theme. I would love to see a video with the animation, as I think it was some of Disney's finest.
I was trying to think of of 'man' replacement but there really a good one syllable isn't one, is there? 'Girl' or 'gal' would just be silly. Dame? Bird?
Haha, just thought of 'bae.' Frollo would love to be Esmeralda's bae.

      +Laura Skerra Or maybe...
      Beatae, Maria, you know
      I am a pure woman.
      Of my blessings,
      I am justly proud.
      Beatae, Maria, you know
      I'm much more faithful
Than the common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd.
      *song goes on*
      It's not my fault!
      If it's God's plan,
      He made the Devil
      So much stronger than humans!

+Laura Kerry (Lolliwusel) What I came up with was:
'You know I am a righteous lamb' (because Frollo LOVES to paint himself as good and just and pure, part of the dichotomy of this song; so fem! Frollo trying to play up that innocence even further is why I picked this word)
'It's not my fault, if in God's plan,
He made the Devil so much stronger than I am' (this is just the first thing that came to my mind that didn't make me cringe. xD; )

After hearing the original again, I find it difficult to listen to in comparison to this cover. Certainly the original song was excellent but, as has been mentioned, the very thought of Frollo being a female almost writes itself. Be it an authoritative religious figure, a nun, a tyrannical queen or maybe even a prestigious Knight? Mixed with the amazing voice, emotion and lyrics you could nearly write a narrative around this rendition alone. Brilliant and wonderful cover! Keep it up.

Maybe even better than the original. Not just because of the voice, but because it's about a love between two girls, that was considered even worse than the love for a gypsy girl.

Something someone commented that I liked was that this character has problems being a woman and sees herself as a man because she is so sad/angry at being attracted to a woman. I think that would be interesting and something that would add another layer to the film. With the character being narcissistic as they are it would make sense that they would blame someone else.

    • @JForJenni
      @JForJenni 10 років тому +8

I have no idea why this bothers a lot of people tbh. But "man" can also be refer for "human" not just for male.

    • @925263
      @925263 10 років тому +3

      JForJenni Not when in singular.
"Man" can either be a human male or short for "man kind", so it would make no sense.
