  • You might not know Charlie May by name, but if you like electronic music, you should. Charlie May is the (ghost) producer behind pivotal tracks and albums with Sasha (Xpander, Airdrawndagger, Involver, etc.), Spooky, UNKLE, James Lavelle, Junkie XL, and a who’s-who of top underground artists for the last several decades.
    All of the music in this episode is an original creation of Charlie May’s, and I would strongly encourage you to check out his Bandcamp (linked below) for more of his work. listen.rosspal...

    That man defined progressive /trance scene, its that simple. At least from a producer's perspective. Huge huge respect for Mr. May. I mean just listen what he did in Mandalay's Deep Love track. He brings all the emotion upfront while not becoming cheesy in any way.

    What a Legend! I discovered him listening through Sasha's music; I would buy all the vinyl records and CDs from Sasha. But later I discovered that the ones I really liked were produced by Charlie May. And from that moment on I realized that I love Sasha as a DJ and Charlie as a producer. Both are musical geniuses in their respective roles. Kudos Charlie! 👏😎

    Fantastic interview and very classy tribute to him at the start. Xpander was my anthem also and is the greatest electronic track ever produced. Charlie is a genius and down to earth bloke. Please invite him back on again and would love to hear his thought process on tracks like Xpander, Don’t panic, Scorchio, Live Bullet etc. I could listen to him for hours.

    That was awesome dude!! Classic stuff. Was just looking to listen to pin drop corporate entertainment on line so I didn’t have to fire up the decks ( one of my favourite progg records) and came across your interview with Charlie May! Big Sasha and Digweed fan as well as Dave Seaman, seen all 3 live a number of times and dig all of their records, sets cds etc. Global underground is like a religion to me. Appreciate your work, cheers

    it would be great if you could also do interview with the legend Oliver Lieb (L.S.G.), who was the nr. 1 master of futuristic music in the 90s and influenced so many people back then. He was the king of space and futuristic music, making all the music styles and unfortunately there is no interview of him in english so far. LSG - Into Deep is the greatest journey ever created in electronic music history for me.

      @@therosspalmer if you meaning this ua-cam.com/video/9QQxhdQKbRA/v-deo.htmlsi=_8IFeozjIxqJVQIR, I suppose its fake because it sounds like someone made it using stems from “airdrawndagger” which you can find. Just lowering bpm and placing different parts of track in another manner. Listen other tracks on guys channel and feels the same. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe Charlie for real made beatless edit)) anyway the man is a legend for me!

    Sasha created xpander Charlie engineered it, is that not the way it was? It took 3 engineers until Sasha found the right engineer to get xpander to sound right and Charlie was the last engineer to get it right

    • @therosspalmer
      @therosspalmer  2 місяці тому +2

      Interesting take... As I recall, it was that Charlie had this gated pad riff (the iconic lead sound/synth/melody of the track) that was shelved. He dusted it off and that became the track. This would put Charlie as the chief composer/architect of the track, but I recognize that none of us were in the room so who knows?

    • @brendyd7
      @brendyd7 2 місяці тому +1

      @@therosspalmer that’s interesting mate, I guess they both played their part on it then. Charlie came up with the bass riff to sasha and Emerson- scorchio too

    • @androgyny77
      @androgyny77 2 місяці тому +2

      @@brendyd7 Yeah Xpander started off as an unfinished Spooky track. So if you want to say Charlie made it - well yeah he did, but Sasha helped realise it into a finished idea. A lot of people seem to get their knickers in a knot about how much the producers that work with Sasha did, or did not do in the studio - I don't get why because the tracks wouldn't exist without Sasha's ideas and input. Take Tom Frederiske for example - if you listen to any if his solo productions, they sound exactly the same as the Sasha remixes he worked on, but he was realising Sasha's ideas just through his production lens. Sasha is a DJ not a producer, and that's okay, he still knows what a great track should sound like, he just needs a bit of help to get there. It's a bit like if you were building a house from scratch - you have an idea of what you want the house to look like, but you need an architect to help you make the picture in your head an actual workable reality. I don't see the problem personally, it's not like the producers aren't credited.
